Attendance Registration Books:
Please fill out the attendance registration book found in the hymnal holders on the backs of the pews and
chairs. Print neatly using complete name and address. Pass it down your row; after everyone has filled it
out, return it to the center isle to be collected by the ushers.
Holy Communion:
We proclaim that the body and blood of Christ are present with the bread and wine in the Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins and recommitment of our lives. Those able to examine themselves,
accept Jesus as their Savior, confess their sins, and acknowledge his true presence in the Sacrament
are welcome to partake. Holy Communion is offered with both common and individual cups (8:30 AM).
If you desire the common cup, wait for the server to bring it. The common cup is filled with wine. The
individual cups also have wine, except for the inner ring of cups in the serving tray, which hold white
grape juice. Gluten-free wafers are available. If you have questions, please speak to the Pastor. If you
would like assistance to the altar during communion, speak to an usher.
Nursery and Infant Care Rooms:
Nursery care is available for children under four years of age from 8:15am – 12:15pm on first floor; take
south elevator from narthex to first floor. The Infant Care Room with a changing table and rocker is located in Classroom 13 on the sanctuary level (second floor). Additional changing tables are available on the
sanctuary level in the family and men’s restrooms, in the women’s restroom located across the hall from
the Nursery in the lower level, and women’s restroom on the same floor as the Activity Center.
Sunday School:
Visitors: If you are visiting today and your child would like to attend Sunday school, please bring the child
to Rooms 14 and 15, east of the sanctuary where they will be directed to the appropriate classroom.
Fellowship Between Services:
Please join us for refreshments and socializing in the Activity Center. Thank you!
Special Needs:
Visual: Large print service folders services are available.
Worship service folders are available in Braille upon request.
Hearing: Hand held amplification receivers with ear pieces are available at the usher’s table.
Mobility: Spaces in the center aisle next to the short pews in the sanctuary are reserved for wheelchairs,
scooters and seated walkers. In addition, two wheelchairs are available for use in the building. One is
located on first floor of the west accessible entrance near the elevator; the second is located in the coat rack
of the narthex near the sanctuary.

INTRODUCTION
In Deuteronomy God promises to raise up a prophet like Moses, who will speak for God; in Psalm
111 God shows the people the power of God's works. For the church these are ways of pointing to
the unique authority people sensed in Jesus' actions and words. We encounter that authority in
God's word, around which we gather, the word that trumps any lesser spirit that would claim power
over us, freeing us to follow Jesus.

February 2—Presentation of Our Lord
Forty days after the birth of Christ we
mark the day Mary and Joseph presented
him in the temple in accordance with
Jewish law. There a prophetess named
Anna began to speak of the redemption of
Israel when she saw the young child.
Simeon also greeted Mary and Joseph.
He responded to the presence of the
consolation of Israel in this child with the
words of the Nunc dimittis. His song
described Jesus as a “light for the

Because of the link between Jesus as
the light for the nations, and because an old
reading for this festival contains a line from the prophet Zephaniah, “I will search
Jerusalem with candles,” the day is also known as Candlemas, a day when candles are

February 3—Ansgar, Bishop of Hamburg,
missionary to Denmark and Sweden, died 865
Ansgar was a monk who led a mission to Denmark and later to Sweden, where he built the first
church. His work ran into difficulties with the
rulers of the day, and he was forced to withdraw
into Germany, where he served as bishop in
Hamburg. Despite his difficulties in Sweden, he
persisted in his mission work and later helped
consecrate Gothbert as the first bishop of Sweden. Ansgar had a deep love for the poor. He
would wash their feet and serve them food
provided by the parish.

February 5—The Martyrs of Japan, died
1597
In the sixteenth century, Jesuit missionaries, followed by Franciscans, introduced
the Christian faith in Japan. But a promising
beginning to those missions—perhaps as
many as 300,000 Christians by the end of
the sixteenth century—met complications
from competition between the missionary
groups, political difficulty between Spain
and Portugal, and factions within the
government of Japan. Christianity was
suppressed. By 1630, Christianity was
driven underground.
Today we commemorate the first martyrs of Japan, twenty-six missionaries and converts,
who were killed by crucifixion. Two hundred and fifty years later, when Christian missionaries
returned to Japan, they found a community of Japanese Christians that had survived
underground.

ASH WEDNESDAY OFFERINGS: The offerings received in the special Ash Wednesday
envelope and in the plate at the Ash Wednesday service have been designated for the Kansas District
Scholarship Fund and the Kansas District Loan Repayment Fund. The first provides scholarships
for students from Kansas preparing at a LCMS university or seminary for a professional church
work career, and the second gives grants to professional church workers in Kansas to help them pay
their student loan debts. All grants are given directly to an institution or a lending agency; no funds
are given to an individual. If you wish your offering to go for some other purpose simply write the
purpose on the envelop or the memo line of your check. Thank you for your consideration.
MEN’S GROUP SAUERKRAUT & BRATS DINNER RESCHEDULED The January meeting
was canceled due to conflicting schedules. The Sauerkraut and Brat dinner will be held on Monday,
March 16 at 7pm in the lower level.

Checkers will donate a portion of the value of purchases to Lawrence schools that collect and turn
in the receipts. You can place them in the basket on the narthex table. Receipts for purchases of
groceries, gasoline, or pharmaceuticals are accepted. The receipts can be taken to a different
school each month. If you’d like to choose a month(s) to deliver receipts to a school of your

GOING TO THE HOSPITAL? HAVE A MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY WHO IS? Please
notify the church office if you or your family member wishes to be visited when hospitalized.
Because of hospital policies, the church does not receive a phone call notifying us when a member
is admitted to the hospital. Thanks for keeping this in mind!
FUNERAL PLANNING: In the days following a death, it can often be overwhelming for family
members to put together the details of a funeral. Whether it is following a long illness or a sur prising accident, your loved ones may wonder what your wishes really were. Have you identified
your wishes, written them down, and shared them with your family? To help you with this
decision-making, ILCUSC’s Health and Wellness Committee has printed a “Funeral Planning
Worksheet” for your use. You may find copies of this document on the table in the church’s
entryway.
CONTRIBUTIONS FOR NEW STAFF POSITION As you know, Immanuel has added a staff
position to the budget to assist with the education ministry, college ministry and the music
ministry. Please consider regular giving to fund that position. Donations can be made using the
designated gift envelopes or they may be included in your regular giving envelope. Please put
“new staff position” on the memo line on your check. Immanuel will need to have at least one
year of salary in the account before advertising for the position.

taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.” Authority is a word we are sometimes
afraid of and don’t like to hear. But that’s just our sinful flesh talking. Jesus’ authority is something
we need. We need him to show us what to believe and how to live —for Jesus’ authority is always
connected to his love.
