Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Parish Family-Alive!
What’s happening?
The Bells are ringing!
Something must be happening – the altar server is ringing the bells! Yet the priest is
not yet raising the host or the chalice, so what’s going on?
This element of the Mass is called the epiclesis – meaning “invocation upon.” The priest,
raises his arms and then lowers his hands over the bread and the wine asking that the
Father send the Holy Spirit so that the gifts of bread and wine be changed:
“Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray,
by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall,
so that they may become for us
the Body and Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.” – Eucharistic Prayer II
Each of the seven sacraments has this element of epiclesis – this asking that the Holy
Spirit come to perform the work of God specific to that sacrament – for example, in Confession for the forgiveness of sin; in Confirmation, for the bestowal of the Spirit’s gifts.
Not just one, but two…In the Eucharistic prayer there are two of these invocations: the
first over the bread and wine and the second epiclesis (after the Consecration) over all
of us. In this second epiclesis we ask the Spirit to come upon us and change us, transform us, so that we might truly be gathered into one. You need to listen carefully for
this second epiclesis!
What about dewfall? We often think of the Spirit coming as wind and fire as at Pentecost,
but in the epiclesis above we ask the Spirit to come down as dewfall. Dewfall: quiet,
mysterious and in the deserts of life, vital. It was in the fall of the dew that the ancient
Jewish people received the manna from heaven. We, too, now ask for the Manna which
is Christ.
