An exhibition at the Huber Hus in Lech, in Schröcken and in St.Anton traces how the Arlberg came to be an internationally renowned brand. What springs to mind when you hear the word Arlberg? Probably snow, magnificent pistes, skiing and winter sports. Lech. Zürs. St.Anton. It probably does not occur to people that the Arlberg was originally ‘only’ a mountain pass. The Arlberg was originally a difficult and dangerous passage associated with great exertion and a fear of avalanches and landslides. Magical Lech The ‘Arlberg. Pass. Region. Brand’ exhibition is distributed over three towns – Lech, St.Anton and Stuben – and explores the issue of how the international Arlberg brand developed and what its key messages are. At the Huber Hus in Lech, everything revolves around the magical ski resort which attracts celebrities from all over the world. The birthplace of Alpine skiing This region has succeeded in establishing itself as a brand both nationally and internationally and this is all thanks to winter sports. The Arlberg name has spread across the world due to the skiing technique developed here and known globally as the ‘Arlberg technique’ and the ‘Arlberg school’ which is a learning method used in skiing lessons. ‘Snow White’ on the Arlberg The face of the region has changed over the decades. During the inter-war years and after 1945 in particular, farming villages began to develop quickly to become the centres of tourism they are today. Their reputation was then transported across the world through the successes of various ski racers. Today the Arlberg is an internationally renowned brand associated with images of snow-white landscapes, an endless array of fun on the pistes and all kinds of winter sports. Lech is still a magical place which, despite its international focus, remains a fairy-tale ‘Snow White’, transporting guests into a winter wonderland. Exhibition The exhibition at the Huber Hus will run until 3 October 2015 and is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 15:00 to 18:00. ISSue 33 | February 2015 Top quality white wine from Wachau in our wine cellar The name Jamek and its vineyard in Wachau represent the renaissance of Austrian wine-growing culture with their natural dry white wines. The lightness, fruitiness and depth of the Jamek wines cannot fail to set pulses racing. We stock these top quality white wines in our wine cellar which contains around 50,000 bottles of the best red and white wines from all over the world. Visitors to the Restaurant Jamek in Wachau in Lower Austria can sit on the terrace and look across the impressive vineyards towards the Danube. They will then immediately understand why these Riesling, Grüner Veltliner and Weissburgunder wines exude such an unrivalled natural and heartwarming vibe. Here a love of nature is paired with the art of wine-growing. Our hotel houses some of the very best bottles of these exquisite wines in its wine cellar. Our sommeliers advise guests in their choice of wine and understand that the Jamek vineyard has been in existence since 1910, becoming a pioneer in Wachau wine-growing after the Second World War. With its ideas, Jamek is the godfather of the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus and is deemed to be the doyen of Wachau. Hand-crafted and natural The grapes are carefully and selectively harvested by hand and are then fermented in a stainless steel container using the vineyard’s own yeast until the fermentation process comes to a natural halt. The wines are heavily influenced by the terroir and are processed further in a large wooden cask. These wines are classified as Steinfeder®, Federspiel® and Smaragd® wines. Numerous awards This vineyard has received numerous national and international awards. The family business has been managed by Jamek’s daughter Jutta and her son-in-law Hans Altmann since 1996. The vineyard extends over 25 hectares of land, 85 % of which is dedicated to white wine varieties, primarily Grüner Veltliner and Rheinriesling. The annual production is 225,000 bottles. The best-known wines are the Grüner Veltliner from Achleiten and the Rheinriesling Klaus. The Burg Hotel houses over 50,000 bottles of wine from all over the world and focuses in particular on Austrian wines. At the annual young wine-growers’ gathering at the end of June, our hotel will be offering up-and-coming young winegrowers the opportunity to present their wines to an expert audience. The Burg introduces its wines We are presenting some of the wines from our wine cellar in each winter edition of the Burg News. In this issue, we are introducing the wines from the Jamek vineyard. These exquisite wines from Wachau are among the best of Austria’s wines. We are looking forward to presenting some more culinary treats and specialities here in the future. And of course, these wines are featured on our wine list. The BURG would like to invite its guests to learn to cook and enjoy this traditional dish during a ‘Kässpätzle’ cookery course at the Kriegeralpe in summer. Kässpätzle is one of the Arlberg’s most traditional dishes. This hearty dish is often known as ‘Käsknöpfle’ and is a dish made from pasta flour, eggs, water, salt, a fresh grated cheese mix and roasted onions. Kässpätzle cookery course at the Kriegeralpe Why look further afield when good things are so close at hand… and this also applies to cuisine. And particularly where Kässpätzle is concerned. This dish is simply good food which never goes out of fashion. Guests can learn first-hand how to make this dish the way grandma does at the Kriegeralpe this summer. Each Thursday, hotelier Gerhard Lucian demonstrates how his grandma used to cook this traditional dish. And he serves guests his fresh potato salad.
