Saturday’s win—the Eagles’ third in their last four games—upped their record to 6-15 on the year. Last night Ohio County entertained the Apollo Eagles (12-10) and on Friday welcome in the Breckinridge County Tigers (12-8) on OCHS’ Basketball Homecoming 2015. Next Monday, Feb. 9, the Eagles visit Henderson County. Last Tuesday Ohio County rallied from a three-point deficit after three quarters to nip visiting Franklin-Simpson 57-56. Senior guard Johnathan Callaway had a big first quarter for the home team, scoring 13 points, but the Eagles still trailed their guests 18-17 at the first stop. Lady Eagle soccer team wins national academic award For the ninthstraight year, Ohio County High School’s girls’ soccer team has been awarded the High School Team Academic Award by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Coach Chuck Adams’ squad was one of only five Kentucky schools to receive the award which was awarded to just 194 teams nationwide. Awarded for “exemplary performance in the classroom as a team,” during the 20132014 academic year, OCHS’ team compiled a 3.50 grade-point-average on a 4.00 scale. The award, which includes all team members who appear on the school’s official eligibility roster for the season, goes only to teams with GPAs of 3.25 or higher. The annual award is based on a team’s academic performance for the entire academic year. According to an official NSCAA news release, “The Lady Eagles have received this award in more years than any other team from Kentucky.” Page B-2, February 4, 2015, Times-News Swim team honors Desmond on Senior Night By NEIL GRANT sportsdesk@octimesnews.com The Ohio County High School swim teams finished their 2014-‘15 regular-season schedule last Tuesday night, with visiting Owensboro winning both the boys’ and girls’ divisions. While at OCHS, Albin coached baseball, girls’ basketball, boys’ basketball, football, and tennis. In the announcement of the honor, it was cited that Albin had suffered some adversity in his life—he was severely injured in an automobile accident in the mid-1970s that required years of painful physical rehabilitation—but has always maintained a very positive attitude and outlook. His positive outgoing personality was cited as having had a profound impact on the thousands of former students and athletes he encountered. On hand to witness Friday’s court-naming ceremony were Coach Albin’s wife Pat, children Stephanie, Ryan, and Amber with their spouses and children, his brother Gary, other relatives, and countless numbers of his former students and ahtletes. OCS superintendent Scott Lewis, Board members Karen Boling, Beth Lunsford, and Dwight Raymond, assistant superintendent Seth Southard, OCHS principals Greg Decker, Angela Alexander, and Robby Asberry, and OCHS athletic director Charles Patton all were on the floor to greet Albin with a framed representation of the new gym floor. After echoing the sentiment of Albin’s influence on generations of local youth, Decker asked Albin if he’d like to say anything. The visibly moved Albin said, “I’d like to thank the good Lord, and my family, and everybody... just keep on, keepin’ on, that’s all I’ve got to say.” Four OCHS students to compete in regional academic meet Four Ohio County High School students will be competing in the regional academic meet Feb. 14 after qualifying in last week’s district competition hosted by McLean County High School. Monday night at home Ohio County battled a very talented Warren Central team before falling 71-63. Monday’s win upped the Fourth Region team’s record to 14-9. Lady Dragon (or was it Dragon Lady?) Tia Barnett had the hot hand early, tossing in 14 first-quarter points as WCHS jumped out to a 26-14 lead. But Ohio County rallied in the second period behind Allison Druin’s eight points to cut the deficit down to 37-32 before Warren Central scored the final four points to lead 41-32 at halftime. Tate Parker’s eight points led Ohio County even closer in the third period, as the local girls got to within three points, at 50-47, and trailed 53-49 with a quarter to go. A pair of Parker free throws early in the fourth quarter cut the margin to 54-51 before a 6-0 Lady Dragon spurt upped the margin to 60-51. After that, the Lady Eagles got no closer than seven points, and even trailed by 15 before a late spurt cut the final margin to eight. Barnett fired in 27 points to lead the winners, and all scorers, while Zakoria Hill added 17, and Karajah Leach 11 more for the winners. Druin finished with 25 while Parker totaled 18 and Caroline Nance 10 for Ohio County. Druin and Nance had “double-doubles” for the Lady Eagles as each also grabbed 10-plus rebounds.
