February 17, 7:30pm Symphony New Brunswick presents Celebrating Our Heritage Returning to her native province, soprano Suzie Leblanc presents two song cycles composed for her by Christos Hatzis and Alasdair Maclean based on poems by Elizabeth Bishop. She will also premier three traditional Acadian songs in new arrangements written by Moncton composer Andrew Creeggan. Elizabeth Bishop, winner of the 1956 Pulitzer Prize for her book of Poems, North and South, loved the Atlantic provinces and retained a strong connection to the ocean and coastal wildlife despite an adventurous life that led her throughout Europe and the Americas. The time as a child spent in Atlantic Canada was her happiest and she returned to this time often in her poetry and her thoughts. Our common Atlantic Heritage and what this means to us all here in New Brunswick, is celebrated in this exquisite February Concert. The orchestra will also present Benjamin Britten’s first opus, Sinfonietta, composed when Britten was 18. Rounding out the program is Edvard Grieg’s Holberg Suite. Symphony New Brunswick is proud of its ensembles Camerata NB and Ventus Machina, as they have delighted audiences throughout the province by presenting national quality concerts in smaller venues in a varied, innovative style. February 18, 7:30pm Spotlight Series presents Good Lovelies and Old Man Luedecke Sponsored by: Creative Juices & Picaroons Traditional Ales. Funny and upbeat with just a pinch of sass, the Good Lovelies’ three-part harmonies, constant instrument swapping and witty stage banter have enlivened the folk music landscape since they joined forces in 2006. The artists behind this Toronto trio (Caroline Brooks, Kerri Ough and Sue Passmore) excel at combining lighthearted songwriting with their irresistibly buoyant dispositions for a blithe brand of folk music that has universal appeal.Based in Chester, N.S., Old Man Luedecke has a cunning lyrical flair, tenderly pushing the boundaries of storytelling with a unique mix of folk, bluegrass and pop hooks. This Juno-winning performer creates narrative-driven folk songs that are playful, coy and soul-warming. He’ll have you hanging on his every word. February 19, 7:30pm Dan Mangan + Blacksmith with very special guest Hayden After a two year hiatus, an induction into fatherhood, and some time to regroup, two-time JUNO Award-winner Dan Mangan has returned under a new moniker, Dan Mangan + Blacksmith. The new name encompasses the spirit of the project’s longstanding ensemble members joining the band from Vancouver’s experimental music community, Kenton Loewen, Gordon Grdina, John Walsh (and often Jesse Zubot, JP carter and Tyson Naylor) with a communal sensibility that merits the marquee amendment. NB Film Co-op’s Monday Night Film Series presents 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared (Feb 9) and Elsa & Fred (Feb 16) Please note: The screening of Mommy that was originally set for Monday, February 2 has been rescheduled for Sunday, February 8, 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus. 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared Felix Herngren Sweden, 2013 Swedish with English subtitles 114 minutes Principal Cast: Robert Gustafsson, Bianca Cruzeiro, David Wiberg, Iwar Wiklander, Jens Hultén, Mia Skäringer Based on the international bestselling novel by Jonas Jonasson and a huge box-office success in its native Sweden, The 100-Year- Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared follows the unlikely story of a centenarian who decides it’s not too late to start over. Desperate to avoid his hundredth birthday party, Allan Karlsson (Robert Gustafsson) slips out through the window of his room at a nursing home and heads to the nearest bus station, intending to travel as far as his pocket money will take him. But a spur-of-the-moment decision to steal a suitcase from a fellow passenger launches Allan on a strange and unforeseen journey involving, among other things, some nasty criminals, a very large pile of cash, and an elephant named Sonya. Gustafsson, one of Sweden’s most popular comedians, fully inhabits the role of the Zelig-like Allan, whose present-day escapades and colourful and complex biography — which includes unwitting entanglements in some of the major events of the twentieth century, including the Spanish Civil War and the Manhattan Project — present a new and charmingly off-kilter version of world history. Quirky and unique, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared is an engaging tale of a life lived to the fullest. Elsa & Fred Michael Radford USA, 2014 English 104 minutes Principal Cast: Christopher Plummer, Marcia Gay Harden, Shirley MacLaine, James Brolin, George Segal Directed and co-scripted by Michael Radford (The Merchant of Venice, Il Postino) and based on the 2005 Argentine film of the same name, Elsa & Fred brings together Hollywood legends Christopher Plummer (Barrymore) and Shirley MacLaine (Bernie) — who previously shared the screen in Richard Attenborough’s 2007 film Closing the Ring — as two aging lovebirds who discover that it’s never too late to make dreams come true. Plummer stars as the straight-laced Fred, a recently widowed gentleman in his seventies who is forced by his daughter Lydia (Marcia Gay Harden, Magic in the Moonlight) to move into a small apartment complex. There, he meets his new neighbour Elsa (MacLaine), who has dreamed for sixty years of recreating the famous Fontana di Trevi scene from Fellini’s La Dolce Vita with the great love of her life — a love that she has yet to meet. Storming into Fred’s orderly life like a whirlwind, Elsa determines to teach him the true value of the time that he has left, and to live the precious moments that remain of his life to the fullest. Gradually letting down his defences, Fred finds new inspiration in Elsa’s fervent will to live, and the pair set out to make Elsa’s long-held dream come true. Screen veterans Plummer and MacLaine have remarkable chemistry in this affecting story of late-in-life love, which also features solid supporting work from Scott Bakula, Chris Noth, George Segal, and James Brolin. Both heartbreaking and heartening, Elsa & Fred’s December–December romance is certain to resonate with audiences who remain young at heart. This term, 12 limited release, independent, foreign, and Canadian films will be shown. The film series is open to everyone. Regular admission is $7; Member’s admission is $4. January-April Memberships are $20 (regular), and $12 (Students/Seniors (65 years and up)/NBFC Members). Memberships are available at the door. The NFTC’s Live Audio Workshop Series Features the Works of Two Local Playwrights Feb 11 The Live Audio Workshop Series: Recorded at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre using our patented Soundmatronic Technology. This February, the Next Folding Theatre Company will continue producing their Live Audio Workshop Series, in which new scripts by Canadian artists are workshopped and then read and recorded in front of a live Fredericton audience. This year’s featured scripts include Gordon Mihan’s The Beavercreek Vacancy and Michael Woodside’s Panopticon. The Beavercreek Vacancy by Gordon Mihan Fran lives a quiet, monotonous life running the Beavercreek Motel with her friend Alfred, a perpetual freeloader. When a Stranger arrives one evening, he seemingly brings about an oncoming storm, forcing Fran and Alfred to batten down the hatches before they, and their home, are washed away. Panopticon by Michael Woodside A writer has written a new play and a director is determined to direct it. The actor has a few questions, and the security guard and janitor have all sorts of suggestions. Sometimes you just have to throw yourself out of the tower for art. Curated by NFTC veteran producer Brandon Hicks, and sponsored by Picaroons’ Traditional Ales, the Live Audio Workshops offer the audience a chance to enjoy great beer as they listen to some amazing local writing. This year’s audio workshop will be held in the Auditorium at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, February 11, 2015 at 7:00pm. Admission is $12 General Admission, $10 Students/Seniors. Doors 10pm; Show 10:45pm Shred Kelly is a formulation of friends and foot stomping good times born in the East Kootenay’s of British Columbia. Hailing from the town of Fernie, the five piece band is best known for mixing clawhammer banjo riffs that tear the fabric of space and time with ambient synth, high voltage guitar, fierce drums, and hauntingly sweet vocal harmonies to produce a sound that has been properly coined “Stoke Folk”. While their gritty and fun 2010 album “Goodbye July” still resonates strongly with boot slappin’ slacker anthems such as “I Hate Work” and “Ghost Inside My Head”, their newest full length album release “In the Hills” takes the mountain string band and adds a cup of electric shock, belting out stories of small town love and tragedy in the places they hail from. Having recently been awarded 2012 Artist of the Year at the Kooteney Music Awards and winning a spot on the Green Couch Sessions/ CBC Radio 3 ‘Tracks on Tracks’ train adventure from Vancouver to Toronto, Shred Kelly is turning banjo doubters into sweaty indie folk rock believers on the dance floor, one town at a time. Both operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired by classic noir films of the 1940s. Iolanta also stars Piotr Beczala, and Valery Gergiev conducts both operas. The live performance (Russian and Hungarian with English subtitles) is presented on Saturday, February 14 at 1:30pm. There will be an encore presentation on Saturday, April 11 at 12pm. All performances take place at Cineplex, Regent Mall. For more information visit: http://www.cineplex.com/Events/MetOpera or call 4589704. Back to top. 22. Recycle Your Old Electronics at the UNB Art Centre and Help Us Create Art Wondering what to do with your old batteries, cell phones, VCR's, microwaves, TVs and other outdated or broken electronics? Bring them to Memorial Hall on the UNB campus until April 9. In recognition of World Water Day 2015, the UNB Art Centre will host a special exhibition by ArtZone, Fredericton’s student art collective, to bring awareness to environmental issues around the theme of water. Many of the hazardous materials found in discarded electronic devices leach into the soil during rainfall and can have dangerous effects on our eco-system. E-waste is one of the fastest growing pollutants in landfills. 20-50 million metric tons of e-waste is disposed of globally each year. Currently, only 12.5% of e-waste is being recycled. ArtZone invites you to become an active participant in environmental stewardship. ArtZone will create sculptures out of your e-waste and exhibit them in the galleries in an exhibition called Heavy Metal, March 13 through April 9. ArtZone is made up of students from UNB, STU, and NBCCD. E-waste collected for Heavy Metal, will be recycled by local e-cycling company, Beaverdam Recyclers. Don’t throw it away. Use it some other way! Bring your e-waste to Memorial Hall and do your part to shape the future! A list of recyclables can be found on our UNB Art Centre’s Facebook page, or the Recycling Event Page. The UNB Art Centre is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. The galleries are open 9am to 4pm weekdays and for special events. Admission is free to members of the public. Everyone welcome! Back to top. Workshops | Classes | Art Camps 1.
