FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME READINGS FOR SUNDAY VOL. 31 NO. 6 First Reading: Job 7:1-4, 6-7 In this passage, Job laments the drudgery and pain all people sometimes experience in life. He talks of troubled days and restless nights. But he does mention that the days move along swiftly, which can remind us that our time here on earth is quite limited and should be well spent. Second Reading: I Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23 Paul explains to the Corinthians that he has no choice, but must preach the gospel. He tells of making himself all things to all people, in order to save some of them. He reminds them that he does this willingly, in the hope of sharing in the blessings of the gospel. Gospel: Mark 1:29-39 Jesus cured Simon and Andrew’s mother of a fever, then others with illnesses or demons came to see him. He cured those who were ill, and cast out the demons of the others. Then he went off and prayed alone until his followers sought him out. Jesus and his disciples then moved on to other villages to proclaim the good news. LORD GOD ALMIGHTY - In spite of a very limited rhyme scheme, irregular accent, and uneven numbers of syllables in the various lines, this hymn based on John's vision of God enthroned in heavenly glory as found in Revelation 4 is a very popular hymn. The use of the angels' song (Holy, holy, holy) is pure adoration of God. Although filled with apocalyptic language, the hymn combines a sense of mystery with God's mercy, power, love and purity. FEAST OF THE WEEK St. Scholastica February 10th (480-542?) Twins often share the same interests and ideas with an equal intensity. Therefore, it is no surprise that Scholastica and her twin brother, Benedict (July 11), established religious communities within a few miles from each other. Born in 480 of wealthy parents, Scholastica and Benedict were brought up together until he left central Italy for Rome to continue his studies. Little is known of Scholastica’s early life. She founded a religious community for women near Monte Cassino at Plombariola, five miles from where her brother governed a monastery. The twins visited each other once a year in a farmhouse because Scholastica was not permitted inside the monastery. They spent these times discussing spiritual matters. According to the Dialogues of St. Gregory the Great, the brother and sister spent their last day together in prayer and conversation. Scholastica sensed her death was close at hand and she begged Benedict to stay with her until the next day. He refused her request because he did not want to spend a night outside the monastery, thus breaking his own Rule. Scholastica asked God to let her brother remain and a severe thunderstorm broke out, preventing Benedict and his monks from returning to the abbey. Benedict cried out, “God forgive you, Sister. What have you done?” Scholastica replied, “I asked a favor of you and you refused. I asked it of God and he granted it.” Brother and sister parted the next morning after their long discussion. Three days later, Benedict was praying in his monastery and saw the soul of his sister rising heavenward in the form of a white dove. Benedict then announced the death of his sister to the monks and later buried her in the tomb he had prepared for himself. Comment: Scholastica and Benedict gave themselves totally to God and gave top priority to deepening their friendship with him through prayer. They sacrificed some of the opportunities they would have had to be together as brother and sister in order better to fulfill their vocation to the religious life. In coming closer to Christ, however, they found they were also closer to each other. In joining a religious community, they did not forget or forsake their family but rather found more brothers and sisters. EDUCATION INVESTMENT TAX CREDIT Did you know …that the Education Investment Tax Credit bill is an opportunity for individual taxpayers or businesses to receive a tax credit for donations to nonprofit organizations that provide scholarships for Catholic/private schools? This initiative would generate greater funding for scholarships to families to help pay private school tuition. Increased donations to The Children Scholarship Fund, for example, allow more children to receive scholarships. For more information, visit www.investined.org. JOURNEYSONGS, OUR NEW HYMNAL IN 2015 St. Patrick's Church and Worship Center have received new hymnals. Journeysongs contains the most recent translations of psalms and prayers approved by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Our beautiful new hymnals will contain a combination of traditional mainstream Catholic hymnody and contemporary religious songs. All parishioners will have the opportunity to memorialize the hymnals. For a $25 donation, a book plate will be attached to the front inside cover. It is a thoughtful memorial for a loved one, or as a commemorative celebration of a sacrament, wedding, milestone birthday, or answered prayer. Hymnals are not available for purchase. Memorial bookplates will be available year-round until all hymnals are memorialized. Please give this your prayerful consideration. Contact the Parish Office for details in January.
