Traditionally January and February are fairly quiet months at the club. I
am here to tell you that you, our members, have changed that dynamic
this year. The last two Fridays you have filled every table in the dining
room and the bar has been packed, lasting until well after the band stops
playing. The number of people attending the weekly activities has been
very strong as well with Poker, Trivia, Bingo, and WII bowling. You
are supporting your club and it shows.
I am always in awe of our members’ dedication and the unselfish way
that they give of their time to make this club all that it can be. Case in
point: the Design and Décor Committee working on the ladies restroom
remodel. We now have a great set up plans, we have a permit to build, and we have 3 bids that
have been vetted. Yes it is slightly more than we were hoping to spend but we are getting a first
class upgrade. This
design is not only durable but will be beautiful at the same time. The
group has been to almost every other yacht club in the area to look at their designs in developing
the plans for how ours should look. They have talked to the designers and members of those
clubs to learn what worked and what could be improved. I am very proud of the team and what
they were able to
accomplish. On Feb 17 the board will consider the expenditure from
our “Reserve / Capital
Improvement” account. I hope that if you have not yet had a chance
to voice your opinion that you will come and do so. I would like to personally thank the chairman of the committee Dave Fleck for providing solid leadership to put this together, along with
all of the members that so faithfully helped with the design: visiting other clubs, talking to designers, and vetting the bids. Donna Love, Delores Reed, Marjorie Logan, Liza Butler, Lynda
Pippenger, Merikay McQuoid, Rosemary Pettit, Leslie Frater, and Carmel Fleck. Plans and finishes will be in the lobby all month for you to look at. We will have a General membership
meeting as well to go through the project.
On another very positive note: Land Next Door. We have been working diligently with the
Home Owners Association, the Grand Caribe Task Force, the Conservancy, and the Silver Strand
Beautification group to convince our new lease holder next door that with the correct amount of
landscaping and amenities we would agree to have boat storage next door. It looks like we have
been successful. We are anxiously awaiting revised plans from the developer that depicts a
project that we all can be very proud of. Along with that we are very thankful for the efforts of
Alan Sweetow. Since 2007 we have been on a month to month lease for the use of the Street
parking, bocce ball courts, grassy side yard area, and our guest dock. On 30 days notice we
could lose the areas. Alan’s efforts to open up a dialog that could result in a longer term lease for
us is greatly appreciated. Thank you Alan.
Who was it that said that this club was only about the parties? Gary Adalian has secured yet
another trophy for our trophy case. At the rate he is winning we will need at least one more case
to house all these beautiful treasures. Gary has now won the North American Invitational Noon
Day Cannon trophy, the San Diego Cruisers Association Sun Harbor trophy (High points for the
year on all races), the San Diego Cruisers Association Spring Series trophy, and the Sliver Gate
Yacht Clubs race trophy. All are on display in our cases. We are so thankful to have such
talented yachtsman like Gary at CCYC. Keep those trophies coming Gary!
And while we are talking about talented yachtsmen: here comes Van Hughes and his team
taking the first line honors for the Blue Blazes perpetual trophy in PHRF Class 4 for 2014.
PHRF races occur in the bay and the ocean with the competition coming from all local Yacht
Clubs. This is a big win for Van and CCYC. Way to go Van! I am excited to say that with
warmer weather around the corner we will start to see more on the water activities. Do not miss
the two Classic Series sailing races this month along with the Jeopardy outing and the Electric
Boat Valentine’s day event. There is a lot to do and enjoy at the club. I hope to see you there.
Last but certainly not least PLEASE HELP US TO MAKE THE CLUBE BETTER FOR YOU.
Myself, Dianna Durgin, Greg Dillon, and your Board of Directors are all very committed to
making this happen. It will not happen without you helping us. Thank you all for all your
awesome ideas and volunteer hours. Each and every one of you, through your efforts, makes this
club better.

The Club is really staying busy with
activities. We had a good turnout for the
football playoff games and the Super
Bowl party.
We had one new equity membership approved
at our January Board meeting. His name is Bret
Harris. Please say hello to him when you see
him at the club. We have new member flags
that will be placed on the tables. Look for these
flags, stop by, and introduce yourselves.
It was great to see the club dining room
filled to capacity the last few Friday’s
nights. The one downside is that we ran
out of the specials. If you can make a
reservation, it would really help the chef
in gauging how much food to prepare.
Don’t forget to make your reservations for the Valentine Party.
Parties are what our club does best. The Club is planning a great
Valentine Party on Saturday, February 14th. All the details are on
the flyer. You must make a reservation for this special event.
Continuing, in the party mood, we have Karaoke scheduled for
April 17th and bands scheduled for the other Friday nights. Mark
your calendars for April. Karaoke is always a lot of fun, with all
our talented members and guest. Our Monday night Trivia and
Poker games continue to draw large crowd. If you haven’t been to
the club on a Monday night, you owe it to yourself to try one of
these games.
Wednesday nights we have Wii bowling and Bingo. The Wii
bowling will be changing from teams to a handicap, playoff
forum. Come out and try your hand at Wii bowling. You will be
given a handicap based on the average of games you play. The
Wii tournament will be at the end of February, just in time for
sailboat races to start.
Our club is looking great, thanks to our maintenance staff. They
keep up the day-to-day repair items. The carpets have been
cleaned and a reflective film coating put on the windows in the
bar. Please do not put any tape on these windows. Tape ruins the
reflective coating. The Club has a few suction cups that can be
used. Always check with the admin staff before placing anything
on the windows.
Ed Morris heads up our Facilities Advisory Committee; other
members Michael Dorn, Leslie Frater, our Maintenance
Supervisor, Gil Guerrero, and our Manager, Larry Sangis. This
team actually walks every area of the club, checks on things that
need to be repaired, and documents each item and date of repair. It
really is amazing. Thanks to this team for keeping our club
looking great. This team is also working with member, Nick
Arther to update our Capital Asset Study. Our Food and Beverage
Team, headed up by Frank Youngman is looking into new
seasonal menu items and some theme night dinners. The other
team members are Karen Miller, Becki Lock, Jane DeYoung, and
Connie Bienfait. Also on this team are Jim Shirey, Michelle Junet,
and Bob Junet, who are looking at cost of goods. In other words,
we have club members working very hard to make sure that the
club delivers high quality food at a reasonable price. We really do
want CCYC to be the number one dining choice of our members.

Your membership committee is working on a
new member recruiting open house, which will
be held Saturday, March 28th. There will be
incentives for members to bring in potential
new members to the club. Some of the events that we are planning
include electric boat rides, bocce ball, raffles for gift baskets and cash
prizes, balloons for kids, great food, drink coupons, and open house
membership specials for prospective new members. CCYC members
will receive flyers detailing the event in the March billing statements as
well as e-blasts and post cards. Be thinking of neighbors and friends
that you can invite to this fun event.
If you have not logged onto the CCYC web site recently, I encourage
you to do so. Under the list of members, we have their photos. If you
have not yet submitted a photo, please do so. This will help new
members put names with faces. Please contact Tisha if you need
assistance.
Our 2015 Membership Committee volunteers are:
Kathy Schreiber, Maribel Dillon, Brian and Marilyn Smith, John and
Montyne Connolly, Marianna Polles, Dottie Turner and Helen Murphy.
We are open to new ideas and welcome all thoughts on increasing our
membership!

For the shortest month on the calendar, we have a lot of
exciting sailing…the last two Winter Classic Series
races. Both Race 3 and Race 4 of the Winter Classic
series are being held this month on February 15th and
February 28th. Please join us for the races. The series
has been great so far. Race 2 of the Winter Classic
Series was great, even if the race had to compete with
NFL Football Playoffs. We have an additional Harbor 20 on the fleet,
which is exciting. There seems to be interest from a few other Harbor 20
owners to join us in the South Bay. The Race Committee sent both Fleet 1
and Fleet 4 on the same course which made for some great pictures and
fun video as Darrell and I followed the Fleet for the race. Also, don’t
forget the Beer Cans start again next month!!!! I’ll tell you more next
month about what is in store for Beer Cans and I’m sure Van Hughes can
tell you how many more days to Beer Can 101. If there are any boat
owners that wish to join PHRF for the first time, please submit your
application to CCYC Sail Fleet Captain at ccycsail@gmail.com to have it
reviewed prior to submission. It’s a new request from the PHRF Board.
This does not include annual renewals to PHRF.
If you are interested in volunteering for Race Committee, please contact
me at ccycsail@gmail.com or find me at CCYC in the Burgee Lounge.
Keep Calm and Sail On! Cheers.

"TYNER WILL PAY FOR IT"
The first quarterly meeting of the Marina community
met for the first time in seven years. The theme of
our first meeting was to listen realize the desires,
needs and discuss the badly needed repairs at our
Marina.
The turnout was great; over 30 folks came and
devoured three giant pizzas and about a 100 bottles of
wine, (just kidding) which certainly added to the
lighthearted meeting. Your Dockmaster, Rick explained the steps we are
taking to finally get internet and phone coverage to D and E docks. We
took many notes and will begin to prioritize repairs, from the steel
couplers cracking on several docks to a piling in need of replacement to
inventorying the lockers and sheds. These storage areas are for marina
people only. A great number of lights are burned out on the pedestals on
the docks. We will get to that as soon as you tell us which ones are not
functioning.
So many other great ideas surfaced during our meeting and I am so thrilled
by your participation. Rick and I will keep you all informed of the
progress. We all understood the absolute need for current insurance and
registration to be promptly given to the office. We also are looking
forward to the surprise we all are going to give the club on opening day.
The humor of the evening was on Bob Tyner when we wondered how to
pay for all the necessary repairs we all joked that "Tyner will pay for it".
Thanks for being such a good sport and giver. Our next meeting will be at
the start of the second quarter and we are going to do a pot luck. The food
from our own galleys have always been great. This way Tyner won't have
to pay for it! Talk to you all soon and keep in touch. Marina Pride
Darrell McNurlan
Opening day will be here before you know
it. To keep with my current theme on flags,
I thought I would go over dressing ship for
opening day. Each entry will be judged on
the ships’ company at attention, proper use
of flags, consistent attire of crew, overall
appearance and proper Captain's salute to
reviewing party. The United States Ensign
is displayed under power from the stern
staff. Again with tradition the United States Ensign can be
displayed from the leech of the aftermost sail, approximately
2/3 the length of the leech above the clew, when the boat is
under sail alone.
Club burgee: On powerboats should be displayed from the bow
staff, on sailboats on a halyard from the starboard spreader.
Officers’ flags: displayed from the halyard on the starboard
spreader below the club burgee with the senior most officer first
and others in descending order.
Dressing ship with international code signal flags. In dressing
ship, the international code signal flags are arranged, reaching
from the waterline forward to the waterline aft. On boats with
bowsprits the flags are from the waterline to the end of the
bowsprit. On boats without a bowsprit, from the waterline to the
bow or stem. Flags are run fore and after peaking at the mast
head or highest point possible on the boat. Traditionally the start
of the flags at the bow is weighted with a Champagne bottle,
the aft end with a shackle. If you have a set of international
code signal flags, the sequence recommended here provides a
harmonious color pattern throughout. Starting forward: AB2,
UJ1, KE3, GH6, IV5, FL4, DM7, PO Third Repeater, RN Zero,
CX9, WQ8, ZY Second Repeater. If you do not have code
flags, check with the club office. We will have sets available to
buy or borrow. To ensure that every boat in the club marina is
dressed for opening day, we will provide code flags for those
out of town and put them on your boat. We will get your
permission before putting the flags up. We hope everyone will
have flags on their boat. Please let the office know if you need
flags so we will have enough for all.
Rick Sipes
Thanks to everyone that attended the marina
community meeting.
Aztec Fire and Safety will be here in the
parking lot on Saturday February 21, from 9
am until 1 pm to refill Fire extinguishers. They
will also have fire extinguishers for sale if you
need to replace any or add any to your boat. This is open to all
club members. If you have any questions please feel free to
contact me.

Our opening event of the year was

Bowman and four others at Peohes from 5:30-6:30. Eighteen
intrepid crawlers headed for Candelas at 6:30 for Tuesday Tacos,
mango chili martinis, and dessert. By popular demand, we will be
arranging a Tuesday Happy Hour every couple of months during
the year, in addition to several day trips.
February’s main event is our trip to Sony Studios in Culver City
for two afternoon tapings of “Jeopardy,” with a stop for lunch at
The Grove/Farmers’ Market. This trip is almost sold out, so be
sure to sign up right away in the CCYC Hallway under “Cruise.”
We are looking forward to our Jeopardy trip on February 24th,
You will be charged on your CCYC account. NO REFUNDS
AFTER JANUARY 11TH!
We would like your opinion on our signature event in
mid-October, Beverly Hills “Affaire in the Garden” – an art, wine
and food afternoon garden party. We can either do this as a
Saturday day trip, or stay for a Friday and Saturday night. Our
hotel would be the Luxe on Rodeo Drive a block from the
“Affaire”; they have quoted us a rate of $279+ + per night
including breakfast. Let us know if you would like to go to Beverly
Hills either for the day or for the weekend: cabw@ku.edu

Get your electric boats ready and sign up for
the February Electric Boat Romance Cruise
on Saturday, February 7 at 12 pm. It is a
competition with love! Boatloads of romantic
people will follow the clues around the cays
to find the lovey dovey names of boats and
take pictures of “heart docks.” The two boats
that solve the most clues and find the most hearts will receive a
prize. However, everyone is a winner when they are looking for
love. If you don’t have a boat, just join one of your CCYC boat
owners. Did you know we have more than 60 boats in our electric
fleet? I hope many of the boats, owners and others come out for
this fun event. Sign-ups are in the hallway.
There are many exciting events planned for the year. We will be
playing scrabble and honoring the flag, hunting for Easter eggs and
matzo balls, playing poker, looking for ducks, and even going on a
mystery tour during a full moon. It will be a fun year. Get your
boats ready!

As reported earlier, Beer Can 101’s Long Range Planning
Commission (LRPC) appeared unable to meet the terms and
obligations of its general obligation Bonds and the entire event
was in jeopardy. Thanks to a last minute infusion of capital by an
unnamed benefactor, thought to be a high ranking member of
“The Familja”, an amorphous Albanian cartel, the event is back
on track. Huzza, shouted the organizing committee, this year will
be our best, although possibly our last.
Jr. Staff Commodore Dave Fleck exchanges CCYC Burgee with
Commodore Doug Tiffany of Nawiliwili Yacht Club Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii
Enjoying a relaxing trip to Hawaii on the island of Kauai in January Jr.
Staff Commodore Dave Fleck and Carmel noticed a Yacht Club in
Nawiliwili Bay. Checking the CCYC web site, we saw that our club has
not exchanged a burgee with this club. It was Wednesday and the club
was vacant so we looked up the club on the internet, got the name of the
Commodore and gave him a call. We made arrangements to meet him
the next afternoon. Of course, we had forgotten to bring a burgee. What
to do?? We knew that CCYC members Brian and Marilyn Smith were
flying to Kauai the next day so we quickly called Marilyn’s cell phone. I
asked her if there was any way they could still go to the club and get a
burgee. She replied that she was at the club and would get one from the
Regalia table. The next day we met them, got the burgee and made our
exchange. This just shows what good friends and good timing can
do. Thank you Brian and Marilyn!

Cruise Directors
Welcome back C-Gulls…
Maribel Dillon
& Jennifer Blair
We had our first very successful meeting/luncheon
of the new year. First, a quick reminder that the
luncheons have been increased to $22 for the
coming year. Please keep that in mind so that we
can lessen the amount of phone calls. Some of our
members made luncheon reservations and had yet paid their 2015
dues. If you think you might fall into that group, please renew your
membership.
Our Cruise Directors, Maribel Dillon and Jen Blair created a
perfect first February 4th luncheon with a fascinating guest
speaker. The focus of the luncheon was on keeping our hearts
healthy with food and friendship. There were several raffle prizes
and congratulations to grand prize winner Harriet Benson. Lunch
was served in new bowls chosen by Jen and Maribel and purchased
by the C-Gulls.
Last month, I mentioned that we have a couple of C-Gulls with
broken wings. Sadly, I report that our member, Jane DeYoung, has
lost her dear husband Bob. Our prayers go out to her and her
family. Fortunately, Bonnie Kulick and Shirley Zaludek’s
husbands are improving every day. Margo Beh has had another
setback. We have sent her flowers and hope that she has a speedy
recovery.
Our membership continues to grow each week. I am happy to
welcome back to C-Gulls Teri Bertorelli, Deb Garcia, Kim
Thacker, Lisa Brenden, and Becki Lock. We look forward to your
support and continued membership.
We also have a new member to the C-Gulls BOD. Joining us is Jeri
Barsz. She will be filling the position of First Mate. Most
everybody in our group has known Jeri for many years. But, for
those of you who may not have met her, please introduce
yourselves and say hi.
As we gather for our second
celebration of women March 4, 2015, we have invited an Astrologer
and Transformational coach by the name of Jackaleen Holton. She is
involved in Intuitive Development and creating Abundance in your life.
She will enlighten us with her vast knowledge and help propel us, to
seek the best in ourselves. She will also do short individual readings for
lucky raffle winners. If you would like more in depth readings, she will
entertain those as well. We highly encourage you to bring a friend.
This should be fun and informative; let’s all
show up with our best astrological auras on!
At the beginning of our meeting, we will be honored to have our
commodore Steve Bowman enlighten us with a short presentation of
the 2015 club agenda.
Looking forward to seeing you all, and don’t forget to please submit
your $22.00 check by February 27, 2015.
If you have any questions or suggestions please feel free to contact us.

Coronado Cays Yacht Club (CCYC)
We need your help to make our 2015 goal of
$100,000 in funds raised for our San Diego

started in 2008 from leaders of our three Coronado based Yacht

$25,000 to provide “three wishes from three Yacht Clubs”. Wow,
seven years later, what a legacy; we will have raised nearly
$500,000! Everyone involved should be very proud of the work you
have done to help us provide so many wishes to so many kids and
their families!

By: Margaret Holden Eaton
Margaret Eaton and her husband Ira were
well known to Santa Barbarans in the early
part of this century as operators of the
Pelican Bay Camp on Santa Cruz Island.
Beginning
humbly
with
small-scale
commercial fishing, seal hunting, and
passenger charters, the Eatons gradually
developed a unique resort that came to be
popular among writers, film companies and
people from all over the country. Working
from her diary and her memories, Mrs. Eaton
wrote this extraordinary story of her life over
a period of many years, until her death in
1947.
Read the book and then join your fellow members for a discussion on
Wednesday, March 11th at 6:30 pm at the CCYC board room.
