Annual report
2012
The road to success begins long before a child enters school – in the earliest years –
with a variety of enriching and positive experiences from birth through age five that
foster a lifelong love of learning. Children who have quality early learning opportunities
enter school curious and enthusiastic, eager and prepared to learn, willing and able to
work with others, and with the cognitive, physical and emotional skills that support
academic achievement.
The Betty Brinn Children’s Museum is dedicated to providing hands-on educational
activities that help children build fundamental skills during their formative years, and
to educating adults about the profound influence of these experiences on a child’s
success in school and throughout life.
Our 2012 Annual Report
highlights some of the
important roads we took
during the past year, and the
friends and supporters who
helped us create pathways
to success for thousands
of children.
The Museum remains a treasured destination for families and groups. In 2012, we
served more than 200,000 children and adults and achieved our third-highest annual
attendance since opening. In addition to visitors from throughout southeastern
Wisconsin and northern Illinois, we were pleased to welcome families from around
the country…even Alaska!
We also saw an increase in the number of families who recognize the educational
value of regular visits to the Museum, helping us set new records for enrollment in
our membership program and member visits (almost 80,000). Museum members
also enjoyed reciprocal free admission on Milwaukee Museum Member Swap Day
offered in partnership with Discovery World, the Harley-Davidson Museum, the
Milwaukee Art Museum and the Milwaukee Public Museum.
More than 9,000 children and adults visited the Museum as part of our 2012
corporate membership program. Corporate Members recognize that the Museum’s
commitment to early childhood education represents an important investment in our
community’s long-term economic and workforce development, and they appreciate
the opportunity to provide employees and their families with year-round access to
the Museum’s educational exhibits and programs. We are deeply grateful to our 2012
Corporate Members for their support, including Badger Meter, Brady Corporation,
Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, GE Healthcare, ManpowerGroup, Mortenson
Construction, Northwestern Mutual, PNC, Quad/Graphics and Stark Investments.
Thanks to the help of Irma Daniels, a Milwaukee educator and proud grandparent,
the Museum launched Great Grands in 2012, a giving circle created especially for
grandparents. Great Grands offers participants an opportunity to support the Museum
while receiving special benefits. The Museum is grateful for the generous support of
those who joined Irma as Founding Members of Great Grands, including Helen Baylor,
Dr. Minnie Chambers, Mary Dowell, Mary Kellner, Mildred Pollard and Holly Ryan.
WEEBLES Coast to Coast, our Museum’s newest
– and largest – national touring exhibit, invited
visitors to join everyone’s favorite wobbling
characters on a pretend trip to each of the 50
United States and the District of Columbia.
Developed in collaboration with Hasbro, Inc.,
and funded in part by the Greater Milwaukee
Foundation, the exhibit offers more than 70
activities that promote science, technology,
engineering and math (STEM), literacy, and
the arts. Visitors paddled a steamboat down
the mighty Mississippi, hiked to Old Faithful,
took a burro ride into the Grand Canyon, picked
peaches in Georgia, and guided a dog sled team
on the historic Iditarod Trail – all while learning
about our country’s history, geography and
cultural traditions on a trip that won’t soon be
forgotten! To complement our popular travelthemed exhibit, the Museum’s Art Central gallery
featured works of art from Tippecanoe School
that highlighted Milwaukee’s famous – and
favorite! – places and attractions. Sponsored by
Mike and Jennifer Keough, Art Central displayed
art throughout the year created by and for
children, including inspiring masterpieces from
Hillel Academy, Milwaukee Montessori School,
Phillip Katz, VSA Wisconsin and the Wisconsin
State Fair’s Young People’s Art exhibition.
Following its premiere at our Museum in 2012,
WEEBLES Coast to Coast went on a trip of its own.
In January 2013, the exhibit left Milwaukee and
traveled to a children’s museum in Florida –
the first stop on its four-year national tour.
WEEBLES Coast to Coast is the latest product
created as part of the Museum’s Exhibit
Development Initiative, an entrepreneurial
program that designs educational exhibits for
lease and purchase by peer organizations after
premiering at our facility, generating revenue
to support our operation and help cover the
rising cost of Museum outreach commitments
that provide support for thousands of our
commuity’s most vulnerable children and
families. Exhibit products created as part of
the Initiative have been displayed by more
than 50 institutions around the country –
and around the world – including children’s
museums, science centers, libraries and schools.
For visitors traveling close to home, we offered public transportation! Thanks to the
support of Marquette University, we refurbished our popular pretend City Bus in Home
Town, the Museum’s kid-sized business district that helps children learn how people
and places contribute to the economy, function and success of a community. Home
Town’s changeable business offered visitors four special experiences during 2012, as
it became The Animal Hospital presented by Shorewood Animal Hospital, The Nursery
& Garden Shop presented by Piala’s Nursery and Garden Shop, The Pizza Factory & Café
sponsored by Palermo’s Pizza and The Real Estate Office presented by Coldwell Banker
Residential Brokerage.
We ended 2012 with big plans for Home Town, including the development of enhanced
STEM activities that reflect the importance of preparing the next generation to
compete globally – a Museum priority. Thanks to generous gifts from Sendik’s Food
Markets and the Jerome J. and Dorothy H. Holz Family Foundation, exciting changes
were introduced to our Sendik’s Food Market exhibit and Super Service Center. An all-new
pretend motorcycle dealership, Hands-On Harley-Davidson™, was also recently added to
Home Town thanks to the support of the Harley-Davidson Foundation. In summer 2013,
we will debut Bugs on the Balcony, a new seasonal exhibit about the amazing world of
insects made possible by Anderson Pest Solutions. Our WaterStone Bank exhibit will
also receive enhancements and new activities to help children build important financial
literacy skills thanks to our friends at the real WaterStone Bank.
For visitors on a staycation, we offered a variety of educational programs throughout
2012. Tot Time continued to be among our most popular weekly programs,
demonstrating the profound influence of play on a child’s development, and teaching
adults how to promote early learning during a visit to the Museum and at home.
Ongoing workshops like Betty’s Broadway, Healthy Moves - Healthy Meals, Ever Wonder?
sponsored by the Brady Corporation Foundation, Pre-School Pop-In, Habitat Helpers, Story
Time Yoga and Money Minders sponsored by WaterStone Bank used fun props, materials
and group interaction to help children explore science, technology, engineering, math,
literacy, financial literacy, the arts, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Our
seasonal environmental education program, ABC Garden Explorers sponsored by Garden
Room, offered simple science experiments and invited kids to test their green thumbs.
Our partnerships with other local organizations throughout the year brought dozens
of unique experiences to the Museum. Visitors enjoyed programs and workshops
presented by Danceworks, First Stage Children’s Theater, the Milwaukee Children’s
Choir, the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, the Milwaukee Ballet, and the Florentine
Opera Company as well as opportunities to learn about the Chinese New Year, Earth
Day, Cinco de Mayo and African dance. The Museum was also a great place for more
than 700 Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies and chaperones to have fun, make new friends,
and work on badges during special overnight and daytime programs. We were also
delighted to partner with the Milwaukee Children’s Film Festival on their Kids Shorts: Size
Small program, featuring animated and live action kids’ films from around the world!
Brighter horizons were just around the corner for children and adults who benefited
from the Museum’s Community Outreach Initiatives. Research confirms that children
from low-income households stand to benefit the most from early learning; their
participation in school readiness activities can help lessen their chances of becoming
involved in crime, dropping out of school and depending on welfare. The Museum is
dedicated to providing experiences that support school readiness and a child’s lifelong
success, and to ensuring that all area children, families and groups have access to our
educational facility and resources. Milwaukee is among the nation’s poorest large
cities; since opening, more than 500,000 children and adults have benefited from
Museum outreach programs designed to meet the needs of our community’s most
vulnerable children and adults.
In 2012, 1,000 families (representing almost 5,000 children and adults) enrolled or
renewed their membership in Family Focus, a program that provides free parenting
education, Museum membership and transportation assistance to families living in
poverty, those with disabled children or adults, families for whom English is a second
language, foster families, teen parents and others whose personal circumstances often
limit their use of resources that can shape a child’s healthy development and academic
success. Visits by Family Focus participants represented almost 8% of the Museum’s
total attendance during 2012.
Thanks to the generosity of US Bank and FOX 6, we
continued to offer Neighborhood Night, an evening

each month when the Museum offers free admission

our community.
The Museum’s Special Admissions Program
provided free/subsidized field trips and
transportation assistance to almost 8,000
children and adults, including school groups
who participate in the National School
Lunch Program, adults and children with
disabilities, and low-income community
groups, childcare centers and neighborhood
organizations. The Special Admissions
Program provides participants with access
to age-appropriate hands-on experiences
that encourage children to use their
imagination and creativity. Participants
also have access to facilitated workshops
designed to help educators expand
classroom learning and meet state
academic standards. During 2012, more
than 5,000 children benefitted from
programs that focused on financial literacy,
engineering, the five senses, renewable
energy and recycling, visual and performing
arts, health/safety, and cultural diversity.
The Museum’s annual Back-to-School
Resource Fair provides local disadvantaged
families with information and much-needed
school supplies that help them prepare their
young child for the upcoming school year,
and is a critical component of our outreach
efforts. Thanks to the generosity of Mike and
Jennifer Keough, more than 1,700 children
and adults benefitted from this important
outreach event in 2012, and 853 school-aged children received a full-sized backpack
filled with school supplies to call their own (a new record). The Back-to-School Resource
Fair also provided an opportunity for parents and other caregivers to gather resources
from more than 20 trusted community agencies that provided information about
school readiness, health and safety, literacy, early childhood development, positive
parenting, after-school programs, and more.
We are deeply grateful to the individuals, corporations and foundations that generously
supported our outreach efforts in 2012, including the A.O. Smith Foundation, the
Robert W. Baird & Co. Foundation, Denise and Gary Elfe, the Richard and Ethel
Herzfeld Foundation, the Joy Global Foundation, LEGO Children’s Fund, the Krause
Family Foundation, Mortenson Construction and Quad/Graphics. The Museum
was also honored to be selected as Entercom Milwaukee’s signature charity for
Potawatomi Bingo Casino’s 2012 Miracle on Canal Street program. Funding provided
to the Museum through this outstanding community program supported our Outreach
Initiatives, helping us improve the quality of life for thousands of children and families.
Are we there yet? That’s what
thousands of children asked their
parents as they took a trip to the
Museum to attend our family events
in 2012, including our spring ABC
Garden planting event sponsored by
Garden Room, and our New Year’s
Eve Pajama Party. Our generous
supporters and members enjoyed
the best seat on Milwaukee’s
lakefront for a fun-filled sparkler
of an evening during our July 3rd
Family Fireworks! Support from
Sendik’s Food Markets allowed
us to present signature holiday
celebrations for families, including
the Valentine Ice Cream Social and
the Little Sweetheart Dance, our
popular Not-So-Scary Halloween
and the Little Monster Bash. Support
from Breadsmith, Cedar Crest Ice
Cream, Golden Guernsey Dairy,
Palermo’s Pizza and Sargento
provided visitors with special
activities and treats to take home.
The Museum’s 2012 Gala, Midnight
in Paris, was our most successful
Gala yet, thanks to the generous
support of many local companies
and individuals. Our Gala co-chairs,
Bridie and Ed Mooney and Amy
and Dr. Amin Afsari, led a team of
amazing volunteers who created
a fabulous evening in the “city of
lights!” The 2012 Gala raised a
record-breaking $197,000 to
support the Museum’s operation
and outreach commitments, and
helped increase community
awareness about our educational
mission. Leadership support for the
2012 Gala was provided by our
Patron Sponsor, the Northwestern
Mutual Foundation, Partnering
Sponsors GE Healthcare and Bridie
and Ed Mooney, and our Raffle
Sponsor, the Marcus Corporation.
The Honor Roll
No matter where you go, it’s always nice to come home. We are deeply grateful to the
individuals, families, businesses and foundations in our home town who support our
commitment to school readiness for children in southeastern Wisconsin and make it
possible for us to improve the quality of life for thousands of children and families in
our community. It is an honor to acknowledge our
2012 Annual Campaign donors of $100 or more
and our 2012 Gala sponsors.
