By Bill Cooper
Happy New Year to all as we roll out 2015.
I am pleased to be entrusted with the leadership of this club, now in
its 43rd year and going strong. The club has evolved over the years
and will continue to go in new directions. I am anxious to hear from
members, either directly or through a board member regarding ideas
for different types of event you believe would appeal to the membership, or just to see you involved in planning or supporting an event.
I have certainly fallen behind on the car projects this past year, and
still need to get one of my Jags back on the road. I hope you are
making better progress than I with your projects. Sometimes we just
have to set aside a couple of hours each evening in order to move
forward to completion.
Your board met for the first time this year on January 15, and made good progress in identifying this year’s events
and their sponsors. We are trying hard to build on the popular and well-attended events, but want to try some different ideas and venues this year. As an example, several of our board members will be reaching out to other automotive clubs in the area to leverage activities those clubs are planning with hope we can arrange some joint participation. At this point the tentative event list is still developing, and those which have been set are listed below.
One thing that makes this club unique is the willingness of our members to host, plan and support activities for the
enjoyment of all. If you have a suggestion for an event you would like to see, or organize, please discuss your idea
with one of our board members.
February’s dinner meeting is planned for the La Tavola Ristorante in New Stanton on Saturday evening, February
28. It is located just a mile from the New Stanton exit of the PA Turnpike. I hope to see you there.

JCOP Members Receive 2014 JCNA Awards
Continued from page 1
Stuart showed in the Special Division Class S03. To compete in this class, the entrant must submit a
document in advance of the show that indicates the Jaguar has a minimum of 40 non-authentic deductions. Once this is accomplished, then no non-authentic deductions are made during the judging. His
Jaguar is also featured in several Jaguar publications, including Jaguar World and JCNA’s Jaguar
Journal.
Don and Barbara Johnson also showed in only the Jaguar Club of
Ohio the Pittsburgh shows. Don showed his 1970 Pale Primrose open
two seater E-type, at right. Don received a first place North Central regional award in the Driven Division Class D03. Don not only showed,
but he judged on both the Ohio and Pittsburgh shows and was a corner
person for the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix.
Dave Hershey, who normally shows in
multiple Concours, competed in the Susquehanna Valley Jaguar Club and
the Jaguar Club of Pittsburgh. Dave, a seasoned veteran of the Concours
circuit, received a first-place North Central regional award for his 1976
British Racing Green XJ6L Saloon, at left.
Dave is a judge for the Pittsburgh club and
Chief Judge and President of the Susquehanna
Valley club.
Terry and Barbara Smith showed in 3 Concours this season, Susquehanna Valley Jaguar Club, Jaguar Association of Central Ohio, and the
Jaguar Club of Ohio. Terry received 3 perfect scores and a first-place international award for his efforts with the 1967 Dark Blue Open Two
Seater E-type, at right, in the Champion Division, Class 05. Over the years, Terry has received many
first-place awards.
Bryan and Candy Williams showed in 4 Concours this season, Susquehanna Valley Jaguar Club, Jaguar Association of Central Ohio, the
Jaguar Club of Ohio and the Jaguar Club of Pittsburgh. Bryan competed with his 1983 Rhodium Silver XJ-6 Saloon, at left. Bryan received a second-place international award in the Champion Division,
Class 19A, preservation class. To compete in this class, the Jaguar must
be at least 20 years old and basically be unrestored.
Congratulations to all of our JCOP Concours d’Elegance winners and I hope to see more of our member compete in the 2015 season. Please contact me if you would like to learn more about competing in
the JCNA Concours d’Elegance program at dsw222h@aol.com or 412-996-2416.

Best collectible investment in 2014? Hint:
Vroom vroom
Thanks to Scott Drab, JCOP past-president,
for providing this article.
Robert Frank | @robtfrank
CNBC
It won't be long before people start putting Ferraris on their walls.
A new investment analysis of collectibles shows that classic cars are vastly outperforming the art market
and were the top-performing collectible investment over the past year. For the 12 months ended in October, cars as a category posted returns of 25 percent while art was up only 5 percent, according to a report
from Douglas Elliman and Knight Frank, the global Realtors.
Cars beat art over the longer-term as well, clocking gains of 111 percent over five years (compared with
art at 17 percent) and gaining 469 percent over 10 years (compared with 226 percent for art).
While art may get the bigger headlines, with
$100 million Giacometti sculptures and $82
million Elvis pictures, cars have been quietly
stacking up bigger gains. The question is
whether those gains will continue as the
global economy slows and sellers demand
ever-higher prices.
"I'm not sure that classic cars can carry on
their performance at the rate we've been seeing," said Andrew Shirley, author of the report.
Series I Jaguar E-type sets auction record at $467,500
The car market is also highly concentrated to a tiny slice of cars at the top—mainly Ferraris, Porsches and
Mercedes. Ferraris from the 1960s are driving much of the price growth for the market and have almost
become their own market.
Of the top five most expensive cars ever sold at auction this year, all five are Ferraris—topped by the 1962
Ferrari 250 GTO that sold for $38.1 million at Pebble Beach.
Overall, investing in high-end collectibles has been more lucrative than investing in stocks. Over the past
10 years, the Knight Frank Luxury Index (which tracks collectibles from cars and art to stamps, wine,
coins and furniture) is up 182 percent while Dow Jones is up 62 percent.

Prepare for a volatile ride
Yet collectibles also have a dark side—they are highly
illiquid and highly volatile. According to the report, art
has been far more volatile over the past 10 years than
gold, equities or real estate. Among collectibles, coins and
furniture were the least volatile.
Coins, in fact, have had a strong, if underappreciated, run
recently. They returned 10 percent over the past 12
months and 90 percent over the past five years, ranking
second as investments just behind cars.
The worst investment when it comes to collectibles has been antique furniture, with negative returns of 8
percent over the past year and 24 percent over the past decade.
And even within collectible classes, like art or cars, there are winners and losers. Broadbrush indexes can
be deceiving in markets where it's only a select few examples at the very top that outperform and skew the
results.
In the art market, for instance, so-called "pop art" that includes Warhol, Ed Ruscha and Roy Lichetnstein,
is up 89 percent over the past year. But so-called "modern painters" such as Mark Rothko, Cy Twombly
and Robert Motherwell, performed better over the past five years.
"These luxury assets can outperform more mainstream investment classes such as equities, but not every
luxury investment will always outperform," Shirley said. "And even within segments, not everything is a
guaranteed investment winner."
