Local Food Growers to Meet The February Growing Food and Profit group will be Thursday, February 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1204 13th St., in Dallas Center. Anyone interested in growing or eating locally grown food is welcome to attend! Bring a potluck dish to share and your own table service. Coffee will be provided. The potluck meal will be followed by a program presented by Liz Kolbe, Horticultural Coordinator, Practical Farmers of Iowa, and Rick and Stacy Hartmann, Small Potatoes Farm near Minburn. Kolbe collected financial data from eleven Iowa vegetable farms in 2014. She has grouped and summarized her findings and will share some insight as to the profitability and related characteristics of these farms. The Hartmanns completed their 10th growing season as a certified organic vegetable farm in 2014. They have been able to create a stable, well-recognized farm allowing them to meet their financial and lifestyle goals. They will share some of the key decisions, changes and challenges they faced during their first ten years that they feel would be helpful in the success of other beginning or seasoned farm businesses. She passed away on January 30 at Dallas County Hospital in Perry. A memorial service is planned for Friday, February 6 at the Perry United Methodist Church where Donna was a member and a faithful servant. A private interment of ashes will be held at a later date at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery in Van Meter. Donna attended Adel High School for 3 years before graduating from Des Moines Technical High School in 1957. She married Don Harvey of Desoto in 1957. She moved to Montezuma in 1976 and lived there for 25 years before moving to Grimes in 1999. Donna was married to Dennis Choate in 2003. Donna had previously attended the Presbyterian Church in Grimes and the Minburn UMC. Her favorite jobs were working as the greenhouse manager at Big Bear in Grinnell and Dollar General in Grimes. She had recently been a foster grandparent for Head Start in Perry. Donna was very proud of her children and grandchildren! Donna is preceded in death by her mother and father, twin brother Donald, sister Darlene and brother Daryl, her granddaughter Brandy Fields and daughter Vicky Harvey. She is survived by her husband Dennis Choate of Perry and their beloved dogs, Poppy and Molly, brother Duane (Shirley) Hunziker of Altoona, sister Dixie (John) Kimrey of Grimes, son Dan (Lynnette) Harvey of Adel, son David (Dori) Harvey of Mediapolis, IA, daughter Nancy (Chris) Miller of Adel, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Dcf grant workshops offered Non-profit organizations in Dallas County looking to fund projects that address significant issues and improve the quality of life for residents can now submit grant applications to the Dallas County Foundation (DCF). Over $80,000 in grants will be awarded in 2015. Grant application instructions and requirements will be explained at two workshops. The first will be held Wednesday, February 11 at the Waukee Public Library Community Room. The second will be held Monday, March 2 at the Perry Public Library Community Room. Both will be begin at 6:30 p.m. These workshops are free and open to the public. Any qualified organization is welcome to attend. Applicants must be a 501 (c) 3, 5 or 6 organization or 107 (b) unit of government. Grant application deadline is Monday, April 13 at 5 p.m. Grants from $500 to $20,000 will be provided in the areas of health and human services; arts and culture; youth development; education; recreation; or the environment and community betterment.
