There is a great deal of competition for each job vacancy so it is essential you have the right jobsearch skills. Vacancies are now advertised in a number of places with many employers now advertising online. It is important you know which websites to look at, ensure you have an up to date CV and you are confident attaching your CV to an email. You may also require support creating a CV, Careers Advice if you are unsure which jobs are available, or assistance with completing online applications. If you are applying for jobs and you are not getting much success you may need support in overcoming barriers preventing you getting work. The Jobcentre can offer advice and sign post you to relevant training or support. Common barriers include: -problems with reading, writing, numeracy -no CV, email address, contact number -lacking qualifications or occupational certificates -lack of work experience -lack of Jobsearch/IT skills Back to contents page-Ctrl and click 3 Back to Work Support-To access some of the support you will need to be in receipt of benefits, Work Trials A Work Trial is linked to a vacancy. The vacancy has to last at least 6 months. It enables you to try out the job to ensure it is suitable. It also gives you an opportunity to show the employer your qualities and skills. A trial can last between 1-15 days depending on the type of vacancy. You will stay in receipt of benefit during the trial and will receive travel expenses. Ask at your local office for self marketing letters you can send to prospective employers. Work Experience Work Experience will enable you to volunteer for placements lasting between 2 and 8 weeks. You will be matched with suitable host employers. All travel and childcare expenses are covered on the placement. The benefits of attending a work placement include gaining valuable work experience and new skills, filling gaps on a CV and providing you with an up to date work reference. Some placements have resulted in the employer keeping the individual on a permanent basis. Ask a member of staff for a list of opportunities and self marketing letters you can send to prospective employers. Voluntary Work We can help you source a placement through a local provider or by logging on to www.do-it.org.uk . You will need to inform us when you start any voluntary work. In certain circumstances, you can work less than 16 hours and still be entitled to benefit. We will take into account the wage you earn and work out what Jobseekers Allowance and Council/Housing benefit you would be entitled to. It is important you consider these jobs as they offer valuable work experience, a work reference and there may be a chance the employer could offer more hours. As a rule if you work 16 hours or more your claim for Jobseekers Allowance would cease. However depending on the hours worked you could still be entitled to Housing/Council Tax benefit. The more you earn the less support will be available. You will need a Better Off Calculation to accurately assess this. www.thesouthyorkshire4jobshub.wordpress.com Jobseekers can subscribe to our free weekly newsletter giving them up to date information on jobs and training opportunities. Using social media you should be able to: Identify the main players in the career sectors that interest you and the projects they are currently working on Find the key contacts in each organisation Access job postings Build your own personal online presence or brand, which can help to set you apart from other candidates, who may have similar qualifications and experience Employers use social media to recruit because: It offers the opportunity to promote their opportunities, quickly and cheaply! They can communicate with potential applicants and find out more about the applicant. They look for people with a professional image, good communication skills and who seem to fit both personally and professionally with the job requirements. Read about how employers use social networks to recruit http://wigisocial.com/employers-use-socialmedia-for-job-recruiting-infographic/ This hand out gives an introduction to some of the key social media sites. It is important though to use platforms that are relevant to your interests and the sector you are looking to enter. Getting started Your online presence is as important as your physical profile (CV), so how are you currently represented online? What is your online personal brand? To find out look at www.onlineidcalculator.com (which shows how you are represented on Google and gives advice on pro-actively managing your brand online) and www.martinwoods.me.uk/social-profile-checking-tool (a simple Excel tool designed to help graduates and other job seekers research their digital footprint). LinkedIn www.linkedin.com This is the largest professional networking site, with over 175 million members worldwide, which provides opportunities to network with professionals from all kinds of employment sectors, regional groups and institutions. Use Linkedin to: Find out more about employers/companies of interest – you can use information gained in your future applications and interviews See the latest topics being discussed within your sector and to contribute your own Search for professionals by job and sector for speculative approaches for both work experience and employment. Gain access to job postings Network with professionals 23 The most important part of LinkedIn is your personal profile – your profile is how you get found on LinkedIn and how you connect with other people. It is where you build your brand. You need to include your education, experience and skills and pay attention to your spelling and grammar. You need to have a completely filled out profile so that recruiters take you seriously. Join industry groups to connect with employers in your sector of interest and get involved in discussions to get your name known. Twitter www.twitter.com What is Twitter? • • • • Twitter is an online Social Networking service that enables it’s users to send and read short, textbased posts known as “Tweets". Each “Tweet” has a limit of 140 characters, including spaces. Because the character limit is small, a lot of tweets contain web links to other internet sites. It was created in America in 2006, and has gone on to have over 500 million registered users, and become part of everyday culture across the World. Who uses it and why? • • • Many well known figures such as politicians, sportsmen and celebrities use Twitter as a means of keeping in touch with, and communicating information to the public and their fans. Many companies and organisations also have Twitter accounts, promoting everything from competitions, offers, etc. It used for these reasons by so many, because it is a quick, simple and effective way of communicating to a mass audience. How does Jobcentre Plus use Twitter? In South Yorkshire we currently have 6 Twitter accounts; Barnsley- www.twitter.com/barnsleyjcp Doncaster- www.twitter.com/DoncasterJCP Dearne Valley- www.twitter.com/DearneValleyJCP Rotherham- www.twitter.com/JCPRotherham Sheffield- www.twitter.com/Sheffield4Jobs The above accounts are aimed at jobseekers. These are our main accounts which we use to share vacancies and news with customers. We follow many different Agencies, Employers, Providers and more. This creates a constant stream of content that we can look through and share any vacancies or information that is relevant to our Customers. Match South Yorkshire Support Guide Back to contents page-Ctrl and click 24 @EmploySY is aimed at Employers. This is an account that we set up last year, but have recently relaunched. Unlike @Sheffield4Jobs this account is not aimed at customers, but Employers. We aim to use it to promote our services to both small and large employers, and hopefully use it to open up communication with them in order to not just find vacancies, but also create Work Experience and more. How would Twitter help your job search? As well as following us, you can follow other local jobcentres and organisations, plus employers or agencies that are relevant to the area of work you are looking for. A lot of these companies and agencies tweet vacancies, meaning that between Jobcentre Plus and the rest, you will create a stream of vacancies and information that is tailored to your own needs. You can also link to your Linkedin profile so that graduate recruiters can find out more about you. It’s important to have a strong profile and several Tweets under your belt before you start truly utilising Twitter for job hunting. Don’t just retweet what others are saying, create meaningful content that people care about. Once you have done this, use Twitter for job hunting by: Following the companies you want to work for and watching out for job listings, while also interacting via Twitter with employees who work there. Looking for vacancies at www.twitjobsearch.com and www.tweetmyjobs.com. Employers often tweet about job vacancies before the adverts are posted online. Use the hashtag #job along with your desired job role and locate to find vacancies. Using Twellow www.twellow.com where you can find lists of people by area of expertise, profession or other attributes as listed in their personal profiles on Twitter. Also look at ‘Job Hunting Guide with Twitter’ http://is.gd/6poUhc How much does it cost to use Twitter? Apart from your usual internet charges, Twitter is 100% FREE for everyone to use. • • • There is no joining fee. Sending and receiving “tweets” is free. There is no annual registration charge. How to access Twitter As well as the website, Twitter has phone applications that all Smartphones, iPhones, Blackberrys, etc support. Once again these are all 100% FREE. This means you can keep up to date with the very latest vacancies and news wherever and whenever. How do set up an account? As long as you have a working email address, setting up an account is easy. You simply need to go to www.twitter.com click on “Sign Up”, and follow the step by step instructions. Match South Yorkshire Support Guide25 Back to contents page-Ctrl and click 25 25 Facebook www.facebook.com Many jobseekers use Facebook to network for personal or social reasons, this is different from the professional networking you will be doing to make contacts and find jobs. Employers and professional groups use Facebook to promote their vacancies or their brand and this can provide useful information for you for applications or interviews. But beware, employers sometimes view the Facebook sites of prospective candidates, so set your privacy settings at the highest possible and make sure that your profile photo is suitable for an employer to view. Make sure that your online presence does not lose you the job. Blogs Blogs are a good way to get insight into an organisation; some larger organisations let their graduate trainees, work placement or intern students’ blog about their experiences. To find suitable blogs make a Google search with the name of the company and then blog e.g. BP blog or the name of the career you wish to go into e.g. “sport development blog”. Start by reading other people’s blogs and commenting on them before starting to write yourself. Sites such as Wordpress, Tumblr and Blogger have made it much more accessible to write a blog. Writing your own blog will demonstrate your enthusiasm for and knowledge in particular career area, as well as your communication skills (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/guides/how-to-get-a-blog ). There are over 180 different Apprenticeships frameworks on offer in 80 different sectors. However, all Apprenticeships include the following elements: An appropriate work-based qualification such as a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at either Level 2 or Level 3; Key Skills qualifications, e.g. working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology; A technical qualification such as a BTEC or City & Guilds (relevant to the specific Apprenticeship); An Apprenticeship is a form of vocational training enabling people to earn while they learn the skills necessary to succeed in their chosen career. Apprentices gain key transferable skills - like working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology as well as studying (in most cases) for a technical certificate, which provides further knowledge and understanding of the relevant job. Apprenticeships combine on and off the job training – on the job an apprentice will work with a mentor learning skills on site and working towards a work based qualification such as a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ). Off the job, apprentices spend time with a learning provider, working towards a technical qualification such as a BTEC. Both qualifications are usually at Level 2 or 3. The amount of time spent studying varies; it can be anything from 100 to 1,000 hours over the course of an Apprenticeship, depending on the sector. Training Costs While you are on an Apprenticeship, your employer pays you a salary and supports you whilst you undertake your training. Most of the training is ‘on the job’ within the workplace, however the rest can be provided by a local college or by a specialist learning provider or in some cases it could all be undertaken by your employer. Match South Yorkshire Support Guide 27 The National Apprenticeship Service will pay the costs of your training depending on your age. Age 16-18- 100% Contribution from National Apprenticeship Service Age 19-24- 50% Contribution from National Apprenticeship Service, 50% Employer Contribution Age 25+ 100% Employer Contribution, no contribution from National Apprenticeship Service Wages All apprentices will be paid a minimum of £2.68 per hour. However, as skills develop, many employers tend to increase wages – in fact, research has found that apprentices earn an average of £170 net pay per week The new apprentice National Minimum Wage applies to all 16 to 18 year olds and to those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. If you reach age 19 and have completed the first year of your Apprenticeship your employer must pay you at least the full National Minimum Wage rate for those aged 18 to 20. If you are already 19 and have completed the first year of your Apprenticeship you must be paid at least the National Minimum Wage rate for your age. Apprenticeship Grant for Employers of 16 to 24 year olds (AGE 16 to 24) The AGE 16 to 24 is aimed at helping eligible employers to offer young people employment through the Apprenticeship programme, by providing wage grants to assist employers in recruiting a young apprentice. The National Apprenticeship Service will provide up to 40,000 Apprenticeship grants to employers with up to 1000 employees recruiting 16 to 24 year olds with a value of £1,500, to encourage employers to take on new apprentices. The £1,500 is in addition to the training costs of the Apprenticeship framework which are met in full for young people aged 16 to 18 and 50% for those aged 19 to 24. Eligible employers are those who have never employed an apprentice before or who have not been in a position within the last 12 months to commit to employing an apprentice again. Very large employers (more than 1000 employees) are not eligible for support through this initiative. But we do want to encourage take up within their supply chains.
