We hope your children have been asking family members, friends, neighbors, parents’
coworkers, etcetera to sponsor your children for
this event. Whether or not you plan to attend
the Jump Rope for Heart event, we hope you
will raise money to help The American Heart Association. If every family sent in a $10 donation,

fundraising, here is a link to a video clip that
you can watch from home https://

neighbors, etc. to help, students receive thank
you gifts while earning money for the American
Heart Association. Online donating is available,
easy, and encouraged.
On Tuesday, January 20th at 6:30PM, join us to
Jump Rope for Heart. Students, parents, and
siblings are encouraged to come to our family
fun night. There will be many jump roping activies, music, games, art projects, prizes, & FUN!
Don’t worry if you cannot make this event, your
student(s) can jump rope at home. If you want
to participate in the fundraising event, but your
student cannot jump rope, that’s ok too.
It’s all about having fun, raising money for the
American Heart Association, helping others,

Thursday, March 19, 2015
Set-up at 6:00PM, View and Tasting 6:30PM-8:00PM
(If you have already RSVP’d, no need to sign up again)
The World Food Fest has been hosted by CRHSAP for many years and remains one of the program’s favorite annual events. Please read the information below about how to participate. It is a
delightful way to involve everyone in your family in a meaningful learning experience!
1. Choose: Choose a country you would like to study. You can choose one country as a family or
each child may choose his/her own.
2. Display: Share what you have learned with others in the form of a display. For instance, you
might include maps, written reports, artwork, or products and/or artifacts from the country. Displays
can include a tri-fold board or computer presentation. Each display will have a 3’ by 3’ table
space.
3. Samples: Prepare a food that represents your country. Please bring enough samples to share
with 150 people.
4. Cookbook: Each family will receive a cookbook which includes recipes from all the participants.
Your recipe page may also include artwork and written information about your country. This is due
no later than Friday, February 27th, 2:00PM in order for the book to be published by the day of the
World Food Fest. Submit all text and illustrations in black ink only on 8 ½” by 11” white paper. It is
very important to leave a 1” margin on all sides.
5. Flag: Make an 11” X 17” paper flag of your country. This is also due in the CRHSAP Office by Friday, February 27th, 2:00PM. Your flag will be taped to the table beneath your display. Your resource teacher can get you the colored paper you need. Please put your full name on the back.
6. RSVP: Please indicate on your RSVP if you need electricity and if you want a packet of display
ideas. Your resource teacher can also work with you on this project.
Please note: Attendance at the World Food Fair Fest is open only to participants and their families.

RSVP Forms Transitioning
to E-Sign Up
Each newsletter that is sent to
HSAP families contains multiple opportunities for student/
family involvement...classes,
field-trips, performances,
etc. all of which require a hard-copy RSVP
form. The form is one way to place reservations, confirm number attending, obtain contact information and the like. This method has
served the HSAP well over the years, but a new
format is being considered for the next school
year.
In the coming months we will be piloting a
web-based RSVP system for one or two events
each month. Families will still receive a newsletter via e-mail, but rather than complete and
return the RSVP form, some events will have a
RSVP web-link located in the newsletter email.
Families will click the link and be taken to a
Share Point website specifically designed to
register students. The same pieces
of information will be collected, only it will be
done electronically. We hope that this method
of "RSVP" will save parents time, be more efficient for Resource Teachers, provide organizers of the event immediate access to participants registration, and cut back on paper usage.
Please help us test out our web-based RSVP
system by electronically registering for the The
Valentine’s Day Party at The Play Station and
the Juggling Family Class. Be watchful for other opportunities to electronically RSVP each
month during this pilot program.
Non-Discrimination Policy
It is the policy of the Cedar Rapids Community School District
not to illegally discriminate on the basis of race, color, national
origin, sex, disability, religion, creed, age (employment only),
marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and socioeconomic status (students/program only) in its educational programs and its employment practices. There is a grievance procedure for processing complaints of discrimination. District employees with questions or a grievance related to this policy
should contact Jill Cirivello, Director of Human Resources, 319558-2421, jcirivello@cr.k12.ia.us. The District mailing address is
2500 Edgewood Rd NW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52405-1015.
FTC Robotic Competition League Championship
CRHSAP sponsored a FTC Robotic
Club for the first time this year. The
team, known as “The Black Arrows”
have been meeting two to three
times a week since September to
build and program a Lego Mindstorms Robot to accomplish specific missions.
As the season nears its end, the team would
like to invite all HSAP families to attend the
League Championship, Saturday, Jan. 31st. This
is a free, come-and-go-as-you-please, event
from 9:00AM - 4:00PM. It will be held at the
Rockwell Recreation Center, 400 Collins Rd NE,
Cedar Rapids.
The Black Arrows Robotic team will be competing against 20+ teams and their robots in
hopes of scoring enough points to move on to
the State Championship in Des Moines next
month.
The Black Arrows have already participated in
four local competitions and are gearing up for
the biggest competition of their Rookie Year.
The Black Arrow team is made up of ten students, grades 6 – 9.
If your child/children have an interest in robots,
or you would like to encourage them in the areas of mathematics, engineering, or programming, this would be an excellent opportunity to
introduce them to the world of FTC robotic
competitions. To learn more about FTC Robotic Clubs visit: http://www.usfirst.org/
FLU SEASON 2015
With flu season underway, the Cedar Rapids Community School District Health Services Department
wants to share some influenza information and prevention tips with all families.
Classic influenza is a highly contagious respiratory
illness caused by a virus. Common symptoms may
include fever, cough, headache, muscle aches,
tiredness, and sore throat. Influenza is spread to
others when an ill person coughs and sneezes. Remember to wash your hands frequently, especially
after coughing, sneezing, or using tissues. People
with influenza should stay home from work or
school, get plenty of rest, and drink fluids. If you suspect that someone in your family has influenza,
7
contact your health care provider for advice and
possible treatment.
