THE BLESSING FEBRUARY 2015 CALVARY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 3177 South 107th Street West Allis, WI 53227 (414) 541-9050 WORSHIP: Sundays at 9:00 AM FAITH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 400 South 91st Street Milwaukee, WI 53214 (414) 453-1710 WORSHIP: Sundays at 10:45 AM Below is an excerpt that was written by Pastor Rachel for the March 2011 Calvary Gram: We will begin our Lenten observance with: Ash Wednesday Services February 18th 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM Imposition of ashes will be part of these services. Both services will be held at Calvary UMC. Calvary Pre-School Open Enrollment begins in February. Please contact Sue Ignaczak, Director, for more information. (414) 541-9050 director@calvary-preschool.org Loving, Caring, Sharing We Pass It On! LENT, literally means “springtime” which, after a long cold, dreary winter, is actually a very pleasant kind of change. The natural world bears witness to the power, the beauty and the rightness of change as one season gradually gives way to the next. And so it is with our faith. The story of Jesus invites us to recognize the way that birth and death and resurrection cycle around each other and that they are each part of a greater whole. LENT invites us to consider that, as with the caterpillar and the butterfly, new things can not come into being until old ones have been released, and that clinging too tightly to those things whose time has come and gone is not a healthy way for us to live. Our LENTEN journey invites us to recognize that in order to fully and truly embrace life we must also embrace change, both the pleasant and the uncomfortable kind – for, whether we like it or not, change truly is the essence of life. FEBRUARY 2015 2 ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING OFFERING March 15th Your gift celebrates 75 years of UMCOR being with those in crisis. An estimated 2.5 million people have fled to Syria’s immediate neighbors of Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq, since the outbreak of civil war in March 2011. In Turkey alone, about 1 million Syrians have arrived. The burgeoning conflict in Syria has also caused some 2 million children to drop out of school. Not only are children missing out on their education, they also are being traumatized by the violence. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is working with partner International Blue Crescent (IBC) to address the special needs of 400 Syrian refugee children in Turkey. Through the creation of Child-Friendly Spaces, children receive psychosocial care and education to help them deal with the anxieties of war in safe, protected spaces. More than 3,000 schools have been damaged or destroyed since the conflict in Syria began. Child-Friendly Spaces offer war-affected children a safe place to learn and grow. UMCOR is assisting displaced Syrians, working together with international partners exploring ways to meet their needs. ********************************************* Your generous gift provides immediate assistance in the wake of conflict like this one in Syria, and supports ongoing ministries of food, shelter, health and peace. Giving to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering ensures that UMCOR can respond anywhere in the world. ********************************************* “Compelled by Christ, UMCOR continues our long tradition of being with those in crisis, working globally to alleviate human suffering and to advance hope and healing.” -The Rev. Denise Honeycutt, Deputy General Secretary, UMCOR IMAGINING WISCONSIN ANEW Bishop Hee-Soo Jung is inviting all to Imagine Wisconsin Anew by being passionate about inviting new people into a relationship with Jesus Christ through our existing congregations and new faith communities. United Methodists in Wisconsin are a wonderfully diverse people seeking to live faithfully and witness to the love of God in Jesus Christ. Over the next few years, the United Methodists of Wisconsin are committed to exploring together what God’s calling us to do: seeking to follow the mandate of Scripture to “bear good fruit.” Imagining Wisconsin Anew is an effort to bear good fruit by serving new people, diverse people, young people, elderly people, all people. The Wisconsin cultural and demographic landscape is changing, so United Methodists need to pay careful attention to the culture changes where there are United Methodist congregations. We are called to invest in new communities around the Conference waiting for ministry to be offered; and provide direction and forming productive responses, rather than simply reacting to changes. Imagining Wisconsin Anew means looking at who Wisconsin United Methodists are, the choices we can make and the opportunities for transformation and vital witness. We have been helping there for several months. It takes us about 3 hours for the entire process. I hope you can help us out. The people are so happy to get a meal on a Sunday afternoon and be able to relax with friends. The serving time is 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM. They are located at 2772 S. KK in Bay View. Please sign up for February on the sheet that is posted as you enter the church. We need you. We meet to carpool from Calvary at 1:30 PM. If you plan to drive yourself, we are scheduled to be there at 2:00 PM. We will serve until 4:30 PM and then clean up and go home. We’re usually finished by 5:00 PM. We can always use new helpers. The more people that we have the better the program runs. Nancy Stamey A SPECIAL NOTE FROM CATHY SHIVELY… WISH LIST FOR BAY VIEW UMC MEAL PROGRAM We are collecting some kitchen items for this very giving program! The kitchen is well stocked, but is in need of important (inexpensive) items. Calvary will be collecting new kitchen towels, 2 kitchen timers (nothing fancy, the dial kind is good enough!) and 4 meat thermometers (no fancy battery operated probes - just the simple kind you stick in a roast!). Please bring the items to church and give them to Nancy Stamey. DIAPER & WIPE DRIVE During the month of February, Calvary will collect (only new and unopened) wipes and diapers and/ or pull ups (all sizes) for Sojourner Truth House. Along with the K&C Group who are working hard making many baby/child blankets, we will help stock pile their baby items. We will collect them every Sunday in February. COIN BASKET During the month of February and through Lent we will collect for the “Heifer Project!” This year we will collect for Honey Bees! For every $30, a family will be able to raise honey bees which in turn becomes a honey making/selling business. Throw your spare change into the metal bowl and let’s see how many hives we can collect for! FOOD OFFERING SUNDAY February 1st We are looking for all non-perishables but would really like to bank up on tuna, pasta, sauce and tooth paste. Please pick up a few extra items the next time you shop! “SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY” February 1st! Calvary participates in this nation wide event. And, like previous years, our soup pots will be up and ready to accept donations. All of the money raised will benefit Calvary’s Pre-School Milk Program. Please throw a dollar or two into the pots, or make your check out to Calvary UMC for “Milk Money.” KNITTING & CROCHETING GROUP The February K&C meeting will be Monday, February 2nd, 1:00 in the John Wesley Room. If you just want to get out for the fellowship, we’ll welcome you too. Currently, we’re working on prayer shawls. However, if you have another idea for a small project, we’re always open to new ideas. If you have any questions, contact Maggie Lewis (margueritelewis@me.com or 414.425.9591). Dale has presented us with a challenge: A “Photo Scavenger Hunt.” He’s made a list of 20 different photo categories. Yes, 20. The challenge is to get a shot in as many categories you can! The list is as follows: 1. Object 11. 2. Live Animal 3. Shallow Depth 12. of Field 13. 4. Nighttime Shot 14. 5. Selfie 15. 6. Black & White 16. 7. Chain 8. Representation 17. of letter “S” 18. 9. Macro of Flower 10. A Child Playing 19. 20. Use a Shape in the Photo Stop Action Photo Shadow Silhouette Mirror Shot Face of a Building (Doors/Windows) Tree Sun (Sunset, Sunrise, With Clouds) Smile Creative (Imagination) Here’s my suggestion for naming your photos: If, for example, you take shots of numbers 1, 4, 7 and 13, give them your name and include the number. Thus, if I took these four shots, I’d name them Tom 1, Tom 4, Tom 7 and Tom 13 and put them in the DropBox. Grace and peace, Tom Shutterbug is a gathering of folks who enjoy photography. Everyone loved the ocean, sites, and food. During the month, the children learned about the Great Wall of China, danced to a fan song, learned a few words in Chinese and made yummy vegetable stir-fry. We truly enjoyed our imaginary trip and fun was had by all. On January 27th, we enjoyed a performance of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” “Little Cloud” and “The Mixed Up Chameleon” presented by the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia at the Sharon Lynn Wilson Center for the Arts in Brookfield. Now we are back in Wisconsin and celebrating “A Fine February.” This month we will be exploring different “Crazy Concepts,” “Valentine Friends,” “Our Country” and “Let’s Visit the Zoo.” Watch out what you may see the week of February 2nd to 5th as the students and teachers will be going “crazy” with concepts. Monday is Silly Sock Day, Tuesday, Dots and Stripes Day, Wednesday is PJ Day and Thursday is Crazy Hair Day. On Friday, February 6th we will be holding our Parent-Teacher conference day. As usual, there is no school for students that day, but child care is available for your pre-schooler while parents are conferencing with the teacher. The week of February 9th our curriculum will focus on “love.” We will pretend to be a postman and deliver our valentines to our friends and send a valentine out to someone special via the real postman! “Our Country Hello Mr. President” begins February 16th to 19th. The teachers will talk about the importance of our country and leaders and point out some of the many, many wonderful places to visit in our country. The last week of February finds us exploring, “Let’s Visit the Zoo.” The children will have fun learning about the animals, the veterinarians that take care of them, and what kinds of foods they eat. It is sure to be a fun month. At Calvary Pre-School we “love” that we have a strong friendship with the congregation. Thank you for the beautiful building and allowing us to be a part of your Outreach Program. With that said, the children and staff want to wish everyone a “Happy Valentines Day!” Sending you hugs and kisses!
