SERVE WITH JOYFUL HEARTS The Book of Job teaches us how to deal with suffering, to have the faith to realize that the ways of God are far beyond our ways. As the good news is freely given to us by God, so too, Paul displays his faith in divine generosity. He freely gives to the Corinthians by refusing the stipend that was due to him in return for his ministry among them. Jesus, as Healer, responds with compassion in today’s gospel and heals Simon’s mother-inlaw who is then ready to fulfill her family/social obligations. What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus? Job – Paul – Jesus each teaches us how to serve each other with joyful hearts. When we find gifts of God in our lives this week, may we give thanks to God, knowing that the gift is not an end in itself but to be given back to God in service. So, get a cup of your favorite hot beverage and begin reading, The Giver. Read future bulletins for updates. 512– Page 8 FEBRUARY 7 – FEBRUARY 8, 2015 THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ISN’T KNOWLEDGE A WONDERFUL THING!! “Healing the Brokenhearted!” Our first reading introduces us to Job who laments his journey here on earth. He tells us that the nights are so long and the days have few rewards. Job tells us, “Is not man’s life on earth a drudgery?” Wow, now that’s a powerful question. There are days and nights in all of our lives when we wonder, “What exactly is the purpose of a particular incident in our lives?” We often ask that question when life is boring, life is burdensome, when there is suffering. We do not ask that question when all is going well. When life is working for us, we normally do not question God’s purpose in our lives or our own purpose in life. We wonder or ponder these great questions in life normally when we have hit a bump or a catastrophe in our routine. That is why you find chaplains and hospital volunteers who are trained in listening skills to stand or sit at the bedside of hospital patients. It is often in the darkness of life, as Job illustrates, that we begin to consider the bigger questions in life. In our Gospel today written by St. Mark we find Jesus coming to Simon Peter’s home and finding Peters’ mother in law suffering from a high fever. Our Gospel writer phrases it this way: “He (Jesus) approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them.” There’s two ways we could respond after hearing or reading this short verse. One is: “Of course, she got out of her sick bed and started serving because that was what was expected of her in her time and in her culture.” Let us stretch beyond that quick response. Jesus enters into the life of one of everyone of us, he heals us of our brokenness, his grace moves the people around us to reach out and offer their aid, His Spirit rejuvenates us through prayer, and we regain our wholeness as a person. Serving others is a natural reaction to the gift of love, especially the gift of God’s love. This is what we see in Peter’s mother in law. Think of this as a family member. It is your love for one another that gives purpose to your service. Peter’s mother in law served with a grateful heart those who were in her home. St. Paul, as he writes to the Corinthians, writes with the same purposeful mission. He says, “I have become all things to all, to save at least some.” What does this great love of God and this purposeful life look like? As we encounter every person and every event in our lives, we prayerfully find God’s love in the moment or our actions intentionally convey God’s love for that person in that moment. A tall order for all of us and it will take great intentionality. Is our purpose to go through life in great drudgery or is it to go through life being aware that God is in the moment when we are open to see His light. Even in the darkest moments, He is there – in people, in events, in things. As morning comes and we arise to a new day perhaps we can remind ourselves – what is our purpose in this day? How can we embrace and share the Word of God through our love for the world? Happy musings!
