The 2015 Monster Charity day was held Sunday 4th
January at the Heads Hotel overlooking the Shoalhaven
River. The weather was perfect during the day with a late
thunderstorm holding off until just after the raffle had
finished.
All our charities were there on the day, including
the Head’s Rural Fire-fighting Service, the Heads Surf
Life-Saving Club (SLSC), the Volunteer Marine Rescue
(VMR), Shoalhaven Heads Pre-School and Apex’s ‘The
Shack’ - all helping out by selling tickets for all our raffles,
and informing the public on how important it is to have
these volunteers to keep our beaches safe, our homes safe
from fires and our fisherman safe at sea.
The Raffle Prizes included a 4.2m Boat with trailer, a
Hobie Fishing Kayak, a 6-Burner Outdoor BBQ with party
packs, and more.
The Apex volunteers were kept busy all day in the BBQ
area cooking lunch for all the guests, with MP Gareth Ward
sweating it out and adding his culinary skills to the fare.
Radio personality Adam Straney was our MC for the day
and our auctioneer - He kept the crowd amused with his
theatrics. - A big thank you to Adam and his family for
helping out on the day.

Monster Charity Day Continued...
The Shoalhaven Heads Rural Fire Service who brought
their trucks and staff along to help out on the day, as well
as the Shoalhaven Heads Surf Lifesaving Club and its
members for also lending a hand.
The crowd of well over a thousand attended the day, and
kept the bar staff busy – including the celebrity Doug May
– XXXX Gold Bar out on the deck.
Everyone acknowledged the community spirit of the
day, and a big thank you to all who attended and put their
hands in their pockets to donate.
A great day was had by all and I must thank all the
members and staff of the Heads Hotel and Fishing Club for
volunteering their services on the day and in the months
leading up to the event - Also to David Bolt, Michelle
Nellestein and Colin Waller for their assistance in running
this event that is growing from
strength to strength each year.

Update of Retirement Village/Aged Care Strategic Plan
Minutes of the meeting held on January 5:
In considering the strategy to take this project forward
the following stakeholders were discussed:
Shoalhaven City Council
NSW Crown Lands
Federal Government – Ann Sudmalis
NSW Government – Gareth Ward
Jerrinja Local Aboriginal Land Council
Private land and interests
In summary the information and assumptions to date are:
This is the right time to vigorously pursue this project
with public support, undeveloped land becoming scarce
and a real need for aged care in our community.
It seems highly unlikely that the NSW Crown Lands is
going to proceed to develop the land without pressure from
our community.
A way to bring a portion of the Crown land into operation as an aged care facility is by Shoalhaven City Council
applying for a licence and then dealing with interested
developer/operators.
While one meeting has been held with Jerrinja there has
been no ongoing contact or response in regard to the land
in the centre of the village.
Shoalhaven Council has identified other potential development sites within and adjacent to the village – these sites
remain options.
Drive will come from developer/operation interest and
community backing – not from government. Finding one
or more interested developer/operators and extolling the
benefits of building in Shoalhaven Heads is the conduit to
achieving this project.
Councillor Patricia White is assisting with guidance and
direction and is liaising with other Councillors on this project. Clr White will seek information from Kiama Council
on the operation of Blue Haven at Kiama as a model.
At this time a combined independent living and high care
(nursing) is the preferred as it is understood the funding
model of having the independent units ensures the high
level care is viable.
Preference is for a not for profit operator although all
models remain under consideration.
It was agreed to: Make appointments with property officers or nominees in known aged care providers to seek
interest in the project. The prospectus has been revised
in accordance with advice from Gordon Clark at SCC to
make the prospectus general in regard to building sites –
this aspect can be discussed in person when appointments
are attended. Ideally three of the subgroup members will
attend each meeting. Robyn will make appointments after
Clr White confirms her discussions with others in Council
who may have direct contacts.

• $1 million for a new artificial reef off Shoalhaven Heads which will
provide a major boost for recreational fishing, scuba diving and
local tourism;
• $3 million for important road safety upgrades on Bolong Road
in Coolangatta and the removal of the speed camera on Bolong
Road;
• $19,518 to the Friends of Curtis Park Arboretum in Shoalhaven
Heads for the creation of a formal entry;
• $130,000 to build a shared path on River Road to improve safety
for both cyclists and pedestrians;
• $15,000 for a learn-to-ride bike path in Curtis Reserve at
Shoalhaven Heads;
• $100,000 for the studies required to progress the opening of
Shoalhaven Heads to the sea;
• $13,353 for Jerry Bailey Reserve Trust to construct a bush track to
connect two recreational areas at Shoalhaven Heads Tourist Park;
• The deployment of two fish aggregating devices (FADs) along the
South Coast to attract fish species including mahi-mahi, wahoo
and marlin;
• $10,330 for a new disabled toilet and wheelchair access path at
Curtis Park constructed by the Shoalhaven Heads Men’s Shed;
• $80,000 for Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club to complete the final
three holes of the course plus an additional $25,000 to upgrade
their 30-year old irrigation system;
• Secured funding to continue to upgrade Coolangatta Road;

our local wineries and tourism, including at Coolangatta Estate;
• $6,300 to upgrade the playground fencing at Jerry Bailey

Member for Kiama Gareth Ward today congratulated the
Shoalhaven Coast Winter Wine Festival following news
the festival will benefit from $10,000 of NSW Government
funding under the Regional Flagship Events Program.
“The Shoalhaven Coast Winter Wine Festival showcases
the essence and flavour of the Coast through our region’s
outstanding wine trail and is an opportunity for festival
goers to meet vignerons and winemakers at their cellar
doors,” Mr Ward said.
“I’m delighted the Festival has been successful in
its application for Regional Flagship Events Program
funding for the third consecutive year. The Regional
Flagship Events Program is an important initiative which
supports growth in local economies and attracts visitors
to Regional NSW.
“Last year, the Festival attracted 8,000 attendees, with
around 4,000 visiting from outside the region, a fantastic
achievement which is estimated to have generated approximately $1 million for the local visitor economy.
“The NSW Government is proud to support this
event through our tourism and major events agency,
Destination NSW and I encourage everyone to visit the
Shoalhaven Coast and celebrate this wonderful festival
in June,” he said.

RED CROSS
Heads Red Cross Branch made a flying start for the year
with the January Car Boot Sale and Markets at the local
Community Hall. The weather gave us an initial fright
with a bit of a downpour, but then did the right thing and
fined up to overcast, although very hot and humid. We
thank our stall holders and the community and visitors
who came out to support us. The markets were very successful making an approximate profit of over $1000. Ken
McKenzie won our lucky stall holder prize and the raffle
winners were Maxine, Shirley, Margaret Laughton, Jenny
Miller (2 prizes) and Denise. Our next Market and Car
Boot sale is not too far away – Easter Saturday, April 4th.
The event will be preceded by our Easter Raffle, so if you
would like some tickets (or a book of tickets to sell for us)
please contact Jenny as below.
Coming up:
Country & Western Evening: March 7th, at the Community Hall - 5.30 – 10 pm. This event will be our major
fundraiser for the year. It will include entertainment by

aid, psychosocial support and re-connection of people with
their loved ones. Red Cross will assess the need for recovery assistance with affected communities over coming
days and will develop plans to provide further support. If

COMBINED PROBUS INC
Well here we are again, a New Year. We hope you had a
safe and happy Christmas and wish you all a stress free and
enjoyable 12 months ahead.
We held our first meeting for the year on Friday 9th.
January with 72 members present. It was lovely to catch
up with all our Probus family with good and sad news. It
was with heavy hearts we heard of the passing of our dear
friend Alan Webb. There were 10 of us from Probus on a
cruise and whilst we were not able to attend the service for
Alan, we did have a little service on board to honour him.
It took courage for Alan’s wife Pat to stand and thank
everyone for their condolences and well wishes. He will
be sadly missed.
Our club speaker was President David Watson, who let
our members know just a little of what happened on our
cruise. The cruise was a 28 day round Australia trip and
over to Bali. He showed photo’s of special excursions we
went on, which included a day long visit to Port Arthur in
Tasmania, then on to Melbourne, Adelaide, Albany, Busselton then Benoa in Bali. After leaving Bali we headed
for Darwin then on to Port Douglas, Airlie Beach and Brisbane before heading for home The seas were calm and the
weather was beautiful for most of the trip. We saw some
wonderful sunrises and sunsets, enjoyed the company of
new friends and renamed a bar on board “The Shoalhaven
Heads Bar”. This was the meeting place where you could
be sure of catching up or just enjoying a cocktail or a
Chicky, Chicky Bon Bon. A great holiday had by all 19
from “The Heads” Thanks Dave. See you on the next one.
John Heopper was our guest speaker and he spoke of the
history of Nowra and it’s surrounds. In particular he spoke
of, and showed very old pictures of Gerroa’s buildings and
events which took place on a Seven Mile Beach many years
ago. These being car racing and the Southern Cross plane
of Kingford-Smith’s landing on the beach. He also showed
pictures and told stories of St.Peter’s Anglican church,
where it had come from to it’s current position in Scott St.
There were photo’s of 1916 and 1952 floods which must
have been devastating for all who were involved. John also
showed pictures of Berry’s Post Office opened in 1883 and
of the extensions which were done in 1905. We are always
fascinated by the photo’s, stories and discussions that arise
from John’s talks. Thanks John.
Our Guessing competition winners were: Wendy Faux,
Cecilly Powell, Terry Lillie and Mon Case. Congratulations to all.
Thought for the month: Whoever is happy will make
others happy too.

Happy Birthday Peg Goodwin
Peg Goodwin, an active member of the Shoalhaven
Heads community, celebrated her 90th birthday on January
10th at the Bowling Club.
Among the attendees were friends Peg had made through
her work within the Red Cross, View Club and Legacy.
Over fifty people gathered including Peg’s sister Shirley,
sister in law Beryl, daughter Anne, son Michael, daughter
in law Denise and their children Dominique and Stuart.
At the event Peg commented how she didn’t really feel
90. Saying the best way to stay active is to stay engaged.
Remarkably, Peg has maintained a great deal of independence with the assistance of her daughter Anne and son in
law Richard .
Peg still travels to the paper shop on a Sunday morning
and enjoys having her hair done at the local salon.
Having moved to Shoalhaven Heads over 20 years ago,
Peg warmed to the lifestyle and was welcomed by the
community.
At Peg’s birthday, many of the guests commented on
how much of an inspiration Peg is to them. Participating in
active charitable work to help others, never seeking out the
spotlight for herself.
Appointed as president of the Shoalhaven Heads Laurel
Club, Peg presides over the monthly meetings. She also
works with like-minded women at View Club to assist the
Smith Family.

Peg is also involved with the Red Cross. She has been
known to knit trauma teddies and serve afternoon tea at
the annual fete.
Having worked as a tea lady at a foundry, Peg retired at
the age of 68 and moved to Shoalhaven Heads. Her husband Sidney was in the permanent army and passed away
when Michael and Anne were both under five.
Her handwork and love for her children has seen them
grow into respected professionals that uphold her steadfast
community values.
Peg never misses a Remembrance Day, Vietnam Veterans
or ANZAC day ceremony and each year places a wreath at
the dawn service.

Zealand oval gets a face-lift
It’s a Great Sign
From it’s humble beginnings in the mid to late seventies
when it was the remains of the sand quarry, Shoalhaven
Heads residents have had the Vic Zealand sports fields as a
centre piece for sport.
Thanks to an all volunteer workforce, we have the best
sports fields in the Shoalhaven area. Many state and regional events have repeatedly come here because it’s the best.
Now, after nearly 40 years, the old wooden sign for Vic
Zealand oval was replaced with a very smart new sign.
Dave Chapple and the Zealand Oval Grounds Committee
drew up the plans and made it happen. Dave said “We
don’t rely on Council. We just put in and get it done.”
The team was up to the challenge of getting it in before
Christmas and Shoalhaven Heads and the thousands of
tourists that have been here over the Christmas holidays
have one more thing that they can be proud of.
Dave would like to thank Neil Shields, Kane Chapple
and Nathan Flavelle for helping put up the sign.

Big flavours without the big price tag

January 2015 ENJOYING food with big flavours doesn’t need a big
budget.
One of the favourites in our household is a dish of slowroasted tomatoes, garlic and chorizo sausage served with
spaghetti.
Whenever tomatoes are cheap and ripe we snaffle them
with this dish in mind. It doesn’t seem to matter what sort
of tomatoes you use.
Romas are good, but last time we used some ripe truss
tomatoes on a special at the supermarket and they performed brilliantly.

Chorizo sausages aren’t cheap,
but you don’t need a lot, so two or
three from the deli doesn’t break the bank.
Increasingly humble ingredients like pumpkin and chickpeas are taking up starring roles in dishes, including salads.
The influence of Asian and North African cooking has
opened up a lot of ways of using these staple ingredients in
new and delicious ways.
Many of these ingredients can come straight from the
garden, which is another way of keeping the budget
even leaner.
Spaghetti with slow roasted tomatoes & chorizo sausage
Pumpkin and chickpea salad
●● 1.5kg tomatoes. Ripe to
over ripe is best.
●● 4 garlic cloves, crushed.
●● 6 garlic cloves, whole and
unpeeled.
●● 2-3 chorizo sausages
●● 750g spaghetti
●● 5 tblsp olive oil
●● Salt, pepper.
●● Parmesan cheese to serve
●● Basil (optional)
●● 1.2kg butternut pumpkin,
peeled, deseeded and cut
into 2cm pieces
●● 1/3 cup olive oil
●● 1 tsp ground coriander
●● 1 tsp ground cumin
●● 400g can chickpeas, drained
and rinsed.
●● 6 dessert figs, finely chopped.
●● 1 small red onion, halved and thinly sliced.
●● 1/2 coriander leaves, roughly chopped.
●● 1 large lemon, rind grated and juiced
Ingredients:

effective methods of enjoying low cost
delicious food is to grow your own.
Method:
Heat oven to around 175°C.
Pour 4 tablespoons of the oil into a suitably-sized baking dish.
Halve or quarter the tomatoes -- depending on size
-- removing the hard core near the stem. Place into the
dish and scatter crushed garlic over the top. Season with a
little salt and generous grind of pepper. The chorizos also
have plenty of salt in them, so use it sparingly. You can
test the dish later and add more if needed.
Toss unpeeled garlic cloves to the baking dish and using your hands or a spoon, mix the ingredients to make
sure tomatoes are coated with oil, garlic and seasoning.
Place in the oven and cook until the tomatoes collapse.
This can take up to 2 hours, depending on the ripeness
and fluid content of the tomatoes.
Cook the spaghetti in plenty of boiling, salted water.
Split sausages in two and slice into 5mm thick slices. Place
into a small frying pan with the remaining oil and brown.
Tip browned chorizo into the tomatoes and stir then
pieces around, making sure you break up the tomatoes
enough to create a sauce. Strain spaghetti and add to the
dish. Toss the spaghetti through the sauce until it well
coated and the sausage pieces are distributed evenly.
To serve use plates or bowls.
Top with grated parmesan cheese and thinly sliced or
torn basil leaves if you like basil. Make sure each person
gets a piece of unpeeled, slow-roasted garlic. When cool
enough, squeeze the clove into your mouth like toothpaste for an explosion of sweet, garlicky heaven.
Serves 6.

Method:
Preheat oven to 200°C. Lightly grease a large roasting
pan.
In a large bowl, combine pumpkin, 2 tablespoons of
oil, ground coriander and cumin and season with salt
and pepper.
Place in prepared roasting pan and cook for 20 minutes
or until pumpkin is tender. Allow to cool.
In a large bowl, combine pumpkin, chickpeas, figs,
onion and chopped coriander.
Combine the remaining oil, lemon juice, lemon rind
and salt and pepper in a jug. Pour over the salad and
toss well.
Serves 6.

Happy New Year to all & I hope you had a great Christmas.
January saw our fund raising swing into gear with the Red
Cross Market Day, unfortunately the weather did us no favours & we found ourselves with less patronage than normal.
We now set our sights on our Community work, if you
have any little jobs around the house you need done, please
contact us.
We are always looking for new Members to come down
& spend a little time with us & enjoy a cuppa. There are
many activities which may suit you, from Woodworking to
Wood Turning.
We are now making Fold down tables, Hall stands & Pot
plant stands, if you would like any of these please contact
us. Rod Porter and Jake Howard have also made some
Children’s Chairs. These are available raw, varnished or
painted. Prices are by negotiation.
We always have Indian Myna Bird Traps, if you have a
problem with them we sell them for $45.00. We also provide the Official paperwork with them, so you can dispose
of them humanely.
Whilst I was thinking what to write this News Letter it
hit me, the old saying, you never know what you’ve got
until it’s gone.
As we had our debrief following the Markets we found
ourselves continuously saying well Webby did that &
Shoalhaven City Council is participating in a NSW EPA
one year pilot scheme to support householders to
dispose of asbestos waste from home renovations and
demolitions.
The scheme allows for a reduced tipping fee on bonded asbestos
disposal at Ulladulla and West Nowra Recycling & Waste Depots.
Conditions apply to access this scheme.
The Scheme commences on 1 July 2014 and finishes on
30 June 2015.
This pilot scheme is supported by the NSW Environment Protection
Authority (EPA) with funding from the Waste Levy.

A HAVEN FOR FISH
NEW SHOALHAVEN OFFSHORE REEF
The Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson,
and Member for Kiama Gareth Ward, have announced the
Shoalhaven is set to become the State’s latest recreational
fishing hotspot, with the new artificial offshore reef to be
deployed there next week.
Minister Hodgkinson said the $900,000 reef has been
constructed using 20 purpose-built concrete artificial reef
modules, each 5 metres high and weighing over 23 tonnes
– making it more than double the volume of the State’s first
offshore artificial reef off the coast of Sydney.
“Twenty huge concrete modules will be deployed in
30 metre deep water about four kilometres offshore from
Shoalhaven Heads, or about six kilometres from Crookhaven Heads,” said Minister Hodgkinson.
“Each of the concrete modules is specially designed to be
self-weighted with no requirement for additional anchoring.
“The reef modules are designed to withstand 1 in 100
year storm events; in addition the design places emphasis
on how the module units deflect currents around them to
create eddies and upwellings,” said Ms Hodgkinson.
Member for Kiama Gareth Ward said the new reef is a
major drawcard for recreational fishers, and will provide
additional tourism opportunities for local residents.
“This artificial reef will create a new, high-quality fish
habitat for a range of fish species and other marine life to
benefit anglers in the region,” Mr Ward said.
“Bait fish will colonise the reef, which will then attract
larger target species including snapper  and kingfish,
providing a great fishing location for boat fishers.
“This project is very welcome news for the Shoalhaven
and will provide a great boost to our recreational fishing
and tourism industries.”
Ms Hodgkinson this is a great example of how funds
from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts are being
invested back into projects and initiatives which directly
benefit recreational fishers.
“Recreational fishing expenditure in NSW has been estimated at about $1.6 billion each year, with about 14,000
jobs created.”

Curtis Park constructed by the Shoalhaven Heads Men’s Shed;
• $80,000 for Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club to complete the final
three holes of the course plus an additional $25,000 to upgrade
their 30-year old irrigation system;
• Secured funding to continue to upgrade Coolangatta Road;

A NEW LIONS CLUB
IN SHOALHAVEN
HEADS
For many years Terry Lillie had been passionate for that
a service club could operate within Shoalhaven Heads that
would benefit the community. After much deliberation he
decided that a branch of the Lions Club would be most
suitable.
After a couple of meetings were held during November
last year a committee was elected and a new branch of the
Gerringong Lions Club was formed.
There are now 12 members of this group which meets
twice a month at the Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club at 6.30pm.
The aim of the Lions Club is to raise money, through raffle
tickets sales and holding events, which will go back into
projects that will make the local community a better place.
Membership of the Lions Club can be a very rewarding and
fulfilling experience as it is a social gathering of people who
have a common purpose – to help within the community.
Volunteering in Lions Clubs provides diverse opportunities
in club leadership, training, membership development,
youth projects, or in a range of practical projects as diverse
as emergency relief, tree planting, catering, fundraising,
running community events.
Membership is open to men and women over the age of
18. A membership fee of $120 per annum covers insurance
and admin fees and all other funds collected are placed into
an Operational Account to be used on various community
projects.

A small child doesn’t have to be
special or do anything to be unconditionally accepted. They are taught
and encouraged to do things and if

cepted. As the child grows there is 44487165
more expected of them and they will fit into the range of
sport and academic ratings. Where ever they fit they need
that continued acceptance from those they love.
Every person regardless of their age, ability or background needs to know they are accepted by a range of
people. Firstly by family, then friends, work colleagues,
church members, club members, even neighbours.
Rejection is very difficult to live with and when it happens, the person looks for another to accept them. A feeling of rejection contributes to children running away, to
friendship breaking up, to marriage breakdown, employees
changing jobs and even people moving house.
The lesson is to accept people for who they are; being
human they may mess up occasionally but so does everybody at times. There is an old saying “treat people the way
you would like to be treated”. You need to be accepted so
accept others because they need it.
God accepts us just as we are, with all our faults and
abilities. He even loves us even though we reject Him.
Like a loving Father He waits for you to come to Him
and when you do, you will find acceptance and love. He
even made a way so you can find Him. Jesus said “I am
the way”, that means ask Jesus into your life and you have
found the Father. Knowing you are accepted by God the
Father is the greatest feeling of acceptance.
Unbroken
It might appear innocuous, but the unprefix has a dash of mystery about it.
Sometimes, it simply means ‘opposite’,
as in ‘unusual’ or ‘uneven’... but every now and then, it implies a state than Anthony Douglas
can be lost, but never regained. So, for Minister St Peters
instance, something that is unopened, Anglican Church
once the seal has been breached, can
never be considered unopened again.
You may have heard some of the story of Louis Zamperini,
the WW2 veteran who is the focus of the new film ‘Unbroken’, who survived 47 days drifting on a life raft with no food
or water, followed by years of daily abuse at the hands of a sadistic guard in a Japanese POW camp. At the end of the war
he was rescued, returned home to great fanfare, and soon married the beautiful Cynthia Applegate. His story resonates with
us because he remained unbroken by his captors, and everyone
loves a ‘triumph of the human spirit’ story, especially when it
has a happy ending.
Except it’s not true.
Yes, he survived what should have killed him. But he returned a broken man, tormented by nightmares and soon
drinking away his pain. His marriage was falling apart as soon
as it began. The smiles on the outside couldn’t erase the aftereffects of the trauma he’d suffered.
‘Unbroken’ is one of those states that can’t be regained. No
amount of super glue and polish can fully repair a smashed
teapot. It will never be ‘unbroken’ again. But Cynthia went to
one of Billy Graham’s first crusades, heard the gospel and believed it, and then spent years cajoling Louis to hear the man.
On his first visit, he was transformed.
Overnight, his nightmares were gone, never to return. He
soon travelled to Japan to offer forgiveness to his former captors in person. He spent the next 65 years in Christian ministry
until his death last year. Louis had been a star athlete, and had
the war not intervened, he would almost certainly have been
the first man to break the four-minute mile barrier. Instead, he
gained a different fame... Louis had found ‘the God who gives
life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they
were’ (Romans 4:17), and been unbroken by him. You won’t
see it in the movies – it’s too real for Hollywood. But this happy ending will last longer, far longer, than a two-hour flick.

The ANZAC centenary
Everyone will be aware that 2015 is
the centenary of the landing at Gallipoli
that gave birth to the name ANZAC, The
AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND
ARMY CORPS, and created traditions
that have been followed by our military
services ever since.
The Commemoration of ANZAC will
in fact be for the 4 years 2015 to 2018, the whole period
of WW1. Of course 2015 will be a focal point and a large
number of events will occur in 2015. The Federal Government gave some money to each Federal Electorate and
some events have been planned in Gilmore Electorate and
further publicity of these events will occur. A race meeting in Nowra, a dinner at the Nowra Entertainment Centre
and a re-enactment of the WW1 Waratah march have been
planned.
Our sub-branch does not believe we are big enough to
conduct similar events and decided to do our own events
to suit our area.
We will be holding our traditional services on ANZAC
DAY, VIETNAM VETERANS DAY AND REMEMBRANCE DAY, THROUGHOUT THE 4 YEARS WITH
SOME EXTRA EMPHASIS ON EACH DAY.
The first, of course, will be ANZAC Day 25th April 2015
and the dawn service will be held as usual. Over the past 3
years we have had in excess of 1000 people present and it
will be nice to see more.
When we started the Dawn Service some 16 years ago
we had about 30 people attend. Our community has always
given great support to ANZAC Day.
However in 2016 we are planning to have a Commemorative luncheon in our village that will be open to all the
village and their guests. This will have a Western Front and
other areas theme as we are sure that people are fully aware
of the great sacrifices made in Europe by our diggers.
As each year rolls by other opportunities will occur to
allow further commemoration and we will take advantage
of these.
We need to make two points that are important;
(1) We believe that it is commemoration not celebration
(2) A reminder that the word ANZAC IS a protected
word and has been since 1916 and can only be used with
the approval of the Minister.

So many words have been written.
So many words have been thought.
So many thoughts have not been said.
So many have not been able to turn their
thoughts into words.
This is the case for all people that that have put
every thing aside to provide future generations
with the lives we now enjoy.
So, this year, 2015, on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, 100 years on from the landings at
Anzac Cove in Turkey, it is our turn to remember,respect,and give gratitude to those men and
woman, from then to now, that serve our
country in all areas of the world.
I myself has loved ones resting at peace in
Palestine and Bullecourt.
An Uncle that fought at Milne Bay.
A Father that served during Korea.
A brother that served 20 years in the RAAF.
A daughter just returned from Kabul, and
a nephew now serving in the RAN.
And like many, a lot of friends in the RAN.
So personally I give all of my heartfelt thanks
and gratitude and respect.

The Great War from the Home Front:
A Shoalhaven Perspective
Although it was happening half a world away, the effects
WW1 would be felt across time and space. Called “the
Great War”, because (at the time) this would be the war to
end all wars, it was the largest and most destructive event
in human history.
Australia’s contribution to the war effort relied heavily on
the efforts of volunteers, both for enlistment into military
service and various supporting services. During late 1915 and
early 1916, a number of recruiting marches originating from
country New South Wales attempted to raise enthusiasm and
the number of volunteers. The first such march in New South
Wales began at Gilgandra in October 1915 and other parts of
the state quickly began organising marches of their own. The
Waratah march passed through the Illawarra in December
1915 having started in Nowra on 30 November and arrived
in Sydney on 17 December 1915. A banner was made by the
Nowra Branch of the Red Cross Society for the South Coast
Waratahs Recruiting March.
On Tuesday, November 30, 1915, a group of 50 men left
Nowra, marching for Sydney as part of a recruitment drive for
World War I. Along the way, the group visited towns and villages, recruiting volunteers and by the time it reached Sydney
had swelled to 117.
Can you imagine walking to Sydney? The efforts of these
men and the women who later enlisted as nurses defy anyone’s

imagination, particularly in these days of living deep within
our respective comfort zones. They were very hard indeed.
This year there will be an abundance of presentations
that tell stories of the battles that were won and lost, the
hardships, heroics, costs and outcomes of the Great War,
but what of the women and children left behind. The Shoalhaven in 1915 was primarily a rural district and would
certainly have missed those who enlisted for military
service. Cows needed milking, crops needed harvesting,
community services had to be delivered and it was often
left to our unsung local heroes: The women.
German forces invaded the neighbouring (and neutral
country), Belgium, to gain access to other parts of Europe.
Thousands of Belgians were displaced as the country was
brought to its knees. An international relief effort began to
garner funds and supplies to be sent to Belgium. A wellattended meeting of ladies was held at the Nowra School
of Arts on the Afternoon of January 12, 1915, to make arrangements for the carrying out of a tea tent in aid Of the
Belgian Relief Fund at the forthcoming Nowra show.
So, the reverberations of the Great War were, and still can
be, felt. Even as far removed geographically and socially
as the Shoalhaven is, our development as a modern society
is in some way, shaped by the events in Europe between
1914 and 1918.

He is a former Police Officer and Australian Army Officer who has served in Afghanistan (two rotations) and
East Timor as a Major. Married to a local GP; they have two small children and live in Gerroa.
Glenn has been working hard, listening to the community and their issues and concerns. He has a vision for our
community and our future and he has a plan to implement that vision.
The liberal Government are making cuts to TAFE and local schools; they have made our local train services worse
and more expensive; they are selling off the poles and wires for our electricity system (delivering nothing for our
region and costing the State a steady stream of revenue); they are not providing necessary funds for our health
system in our hospitals and our ambulance services or for other critical services.
They are not a good government for our community.
Glenn will fight for better services for our growing region – education, police, public transport,
health, utilities and more. He will also fight for sustainability and to protect our natural heritage.

POLICY ANNOUNCEMENTS
To date, Labor has announced a number of policies which we will take to the election,
including the following which are directly relevant to the Kiama electorate:
Labor will maintain the boundaries of Gerringong and Gerroa where they
currently are, preserving the agricultural belt south of the Elambra
Estate. This is vital to local agriculture and tourism businesses; and will
also protect the environment in that area. (The Liberals, and in particular
Gareth Ward, have said they will never allow the boundaries to meet, but
have not ruled out development on that land, and have refused to
answer how close they will allow the boundaries to get to each other).
Labor will reinstate Jervis Bay Marine Park’s protected status, and will lift
the Liberals’ general moratorium on creating new Marine Parks. This will
lead to increased fishing stocks along the Kiama coastline.
Labor will keep TAFE fees at current 2014 levels; will restrict the amount
of funding available for private operators to contest to 30%; and will do
away with the Smart & Skilled program, which has cut a lot of courses
from TAFE, including many apprenticeship programs.
Labor will ban Coal Seam Gas mining in drinking water catchment areas;
and will place a moratorium on all CSG mining in NSW until the Chief
Scientist is satisfied that CSG mining has been proven to be safe.
Labor will create a specialist sexual assault and domestic violence court
in the Illawarra, which will streamline the court processes for domestic
violence issues and ensure offenders are not able to reoffend.
Labor will also undo the mess created by the Liberal Government
through the Going Home Staying Home reforms. Under the present
Government several local homelessness services have closed, and we
have nine fewer youth homelessness beds in the region. In addition,
funding for a number of the remaining homelessness providers will
expire in 2016, with no guarantee of further funding. Labor will work with
local homelessness providers to ensure services are returned to
sustainable and workable levels and are properly supported.
Labor is committed to returning 50% of the sale price of Port Kembla to
the Illawarra, including the Kiama electorate, for vital infrastructure
projects that will create jobs and opportunities for people in our region.
In April 2013, the Liberal Government sold Port Kembla for $760 million
but promised only $100 million would be reinvested in the Illawarra.
Labor’s commitment to reserve $380 million for Illawarra regional
infrastructure represents exactly one-half of the sale proceeds and is a
$280 million increase in the amount of funding.
More Policies will be announced over the next weeks leading up to the
election.

light shower of rain fell, definitely well timed by the Match
Committee. Third prize went to George Winstanley, Colleen
Winstanley & John Lewis narrowly after a count-back. Second Prize went to Ray Cumberland, Margaret Cumberland
& Brian O’Connell with yet another count-back deciding
the Winning Team of Anne McCauley, C Morten & Russ
McCauley. The day consisted of 2 games of 12 ends and the
results certainly highlighted the competitive spirit that exists
in our Club. We also welcomed players from Bomaderry
B.C and Blaney BC In Feb we have 2 nights of Twilight
Mixed Triples. This event is Sponsored by Tooheys XXXX
Gold. Around April we will be hosting the popular Karen
Murphy Mixed Fours, The Wray Owen Jerry Bailey Triples
(mens’) and the Davenport Pairs will be held towards the
end of the year. Free coaching by our Club Coach, Russ McCauley, We also have our Mens Triples, Single entry Club
selected, every Wednesday starting at 12.30 pm, Fridays
we play Mens Triples, Blind draw, team and single entry
starting at 12.30 pm. For Wed & Fri games please have your

From the Golf Club
The Christmas / New Year period has seen record numbers take to the course. Greg details some actual numbers
in his report. It has been most gratifying when talking to
many of the visitors in recent weeks who have spoken in
glowing terms of our course and also of the friendliness of
the staff and club members.
I believe the grounds staff and the many volunteers who
do work both on the course and around the clubhouse
should be proud of their efforts. Over the years this Club
has developed and constantly improved primarily through
the dedication and hard work of many of our members.
On the golf scene our A Pennants team have started this
year’s competition with mixed results. Last Sunday they
played Russell Vale at home and won 5 – 0. This certainly put
them back towards the top of the ladder; hopefully they can
continue in this same manner over the rest of the competition.

Well the busy season is just about over with record numbers
being set for December and early January. In December the
club averaged 103 players per day and was the first time we
have averaged over a hundred for a month; whilst in early
January we had 965 rounds in a week at an average of 137
players per day. Having great weather through this period
obviously played a large part in the number of players we
had, however; full credit must go to Tony and the boys on the
ground staff for keeping the course in sensational condition.

On to events that have happened at the club, it was great to
see a turn out of 66 players for the caravan parks challenge.
This year it was the Holiday Haven Park that triumphed giving them bragging rights for the next 12 months.
Last Friday we had 73 players turn out for a fundraising
day for Lachlan Thoroughgood. Lachie is currently receiving
treatment for a glioblastoma brain tumour that involves radiation and chemotherapy at the Sydney Children’s hospital. On
the day a total of $10,855 was raised from donations, raffles
and auctions. On behalf of the golf club and the pro shop staff
we would like to thank everyone who contributed and played
on the day. We would also like to wish Lachlan and his parents
Nathan and Leanne all the best for Lachlan’s future treatments.
On to upcoming events and the Heads Hotel summer teams
competition is set to resume on the 31st of January. This will
run for another 5 weeks before we split into various divisions
for a 3 week finals series culminating in Grand final day where
everyone plays on Sunday 29th of March. The presentation
will take place shortly after golf finishes on this day.

New Inductee into Shoalhaven Sporting Hall of Fame
Another Title under Bruce Fagan’s belt

After 47 years of coaching Judo, Bruce William Fagan
has trained 81 Black Belt students and a remarkable 12
Olympians. An Australian National Level III Coach for 13
years, he has coached his students to an astounding 209
Australian Titles.
Further to this Bruce’s students have represented Australia
212 times at international tournaments to 70 wins and 127
additional places. His own children Darren, Danny and
Shayne, are all national and international champions several
times over.
A disarmingly gentle and humble man, Bruce has never
taken earnings for his coaching services. His winning formula revolves around treating everyone the same, and he
holds countless memories of students for whom this maxim
and the challenging sport of Judo has transformed life.
Bruce started the Bushido Judo Club in Shoalhaven
Heads in 1996. He has donated his time to organising the
Shoalhaven Open, South Coast Open and Country Judo
Championships, as well as serving as Vice/President for the
NSW Board of Judo Management and Judo Federation of
Australia, and as State and National Referee 1968-1992. He
has organised 12 international club tours to provide students
with international experience.
