THE DOOMERNIK YACHTS TEAM JOOP DOOMERNIK 01 IN THE FIRST MONTHS OF THE YEAR WE FINISHED 2 RESTORATIONS OF PEDERSEN AND THUESEN DRAGONS. Both came from the same lake in Essen The original Abekingen and Rasmussen cabin Germany and both needed a complete new oak was saved and carefully restored and combined keel, some oak floors, new deadwoods, a lot of with a new teak deck with mahogany trim. steamed frames and cedrela hull planking. Then the owner surprised us with the order The pictures show one of the boats upside for a complete set of wooden spars and we down and far from sailing again. Both boats scratched the back of our heads for a while were delivered back to two happy owners over and went to work. John Lammerts van Bueren the course of the season. helped us with the most amazing 13 meter lengths of the finest Sitka Spruce you will 2014 also saw the delivery of BEL 44 to a ever see. The result is a hollow section with Dutch owner. This boat came from another all halliards lead inside and even an inside yard where her hull had been restored using a mounted top lock for the mainsail. In the end I complete epoxy finish. feel this is basically a new boat. We came in just after the bare hull was more or More and more wooden boats find their way to less finished and continued from there. the yard again. Restoration is where we started We installed the below deck layout and then the almost 25 years ago and we are very happy to deck beams and plywood deck. see an increase of wooden boats in the yard. 02 IN SPRING WE DELIVERED A NEW ‘GRAND PRIX ELEGANCE’ TO A REPEAT CUSTOMER. We changed the name of the new Dragons into Grand Prix for the vinylesther deck version and Grand Prix Elegance for the wooden deck version. We hope this makes it more clear to the marked that these are both racing boats to start with and even though the ‘Elegance’ has a stylish wooden deck, this does not make her a cruising boat at all! 03 A second ‘Grand Prix Elegance’ is under construction, also for a repeat customer, and this boat will be delivered early 2015. This boat will be delivered without spinnaker shute. The first time we did this was in 2006 and it has become the choice of many crews nowadays. We have decided to come with a choice between two floor heights in the cockpit. Many crews tell me they consider the standard Doomernik cockpit floor too low where others claim they do not want a high floor at all! This makes it difficult for us to choose which way to go so we will simply give you the choice. 04 WITH MORE AND MORE BOATS BUILT, RESTORED AND REPAIRED THE NUMBER OF BOATS PASSING BY INCREASES EVERY YEAR. It is very encouraging to see that more and more foreign Dragon sailors with ‘other’ Dragons trust us with the caretaking their precious boat needs. Since we are in the centre between racing area’s in the north and south of Europe it is very convenient to leave your Dragon at Doomernik Yachts in between races and have her taken care of at the same time. At present the yard and storage are filled with more Dragons than we ever have seen. sa 05 AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF REDEVELOPMENT AND PREPARATIONS WORK HAS STARTED ON THE FIRST WALLY NANO MARK II. We spend a lot of time preparing the mould and making new mould inserts that will bring back the original detailing of the hull such as a recessed bulwark and a beautiful cove stripe that were left out in the first boats built elsewhere. The hull was infused using nothing but the best available materials on the marked supplied by Gurrit UK. The construction is made of carbon/foam sandwich ensuring a very stiff and ultralight hull and deck. The standard boat is equipped with electrical propulsion and a Harken deck layout featuring two electrical winches. This will make short hand easy sailing very possible. The first new Wally Nano is expected to be launched over the course of the coming season. The first Wally Nano hull has left the mould 06 MANY DRAGON SAILORS TELL US THEY DO NOT SEE MANY DOOMERNIK DRAGONS IN THE TOP OF THE RESULTS AT VARIOUS RACES. Price giving in Douarnenez AFTER SEEING THIS PICTURE I DECIDED TO BUY A PAIR OF HIGH HEELED SHOES FROM THE SEVENTIES IN CASE I NEED TO BE AT A PRICE GIVING WITH THESE GUYS AGAIN… Well, this makes sense… there are not many Doomernik Dragons out there and with almost the entire fleet consisting of boats built by our UK colleagues it is more interesting to see what one Doomernik sailed by a good crew can do. Or demo Dragon Apollo was tried out by the RUS 76 team at the coupe the Bretagne in spring and I was lucky to be able to crew for one day. They finished second overall being the only Doomernik in the fleet and their first time on a Doomernik Dragon. 07 Team RUS 76 sailing apollo Willy Packer and team At the Dutch open championships I crewed on NED 373. She is a 2007 boat with vinylester deck and still going strong. We finished second overall just after Pieter Heerema and his dream team and his ‘chip tuned’ Pedersen Dragon from the 50’s. In Hong Kong Tam Nguyen is going strong in his 2011 ‘Grand Prix Elegance’. On my request he has send me a list of his results but it is simply too long to mention here. He basically wins everything there is to win over there and has done so since he took delivery of the boat in 2011. In Australia Willy Packer and his team on AUS 214 ‘Scoundrel’ are winning race after race. Being the only Doomernik Dragon in the fleet. 08 SO, INTERESTING TIMES ALL TOGETHER AND EVEN MORE INTERESTING TIMES TO BE EXPECTED IN 2015. With discussions with customers for new challenging projects underway that we cannot reveal in this newsletter yet. You will be able to find out more in due time through our website and Facebook page and there you can also find regular updates on what is happening in the yard and in the fleets. We hope you are looking forward to 2015 as much as we do and that this year will bring you fair winds wherever you go and remember….
