NSW Mandatory
Alcohol Interlock Program
WHAT IS THE DRÄGER INTERLOCK 7000?
The Dräger Interlock® 7000 is a reliable and precise
alcohol measuring instrument with integrated vehicle
immobiliser. It prevents a person under the influence
of alcohol from starting the vehicle. The Dräger
Interlock® 7000 consists of two components: –
handset and control box. If required, the device can
be additionally equipped with a camera.
HOW DOES THE DRÄGER INTERLOCK 7000 WORK?
Before you can start the engine, the device –
measures the alcohol content in your breath. When
no alcohol is detected, you can drive, however, –
if alcohol is detected, you will not be able to start
your vehicle. Retests are required while driving –
and are carried out at random intervals. The –
Dräger Interlock® 7000 does not interfere with –
a running engine. Therefore, your driving will not –
be disrupted by the device.
The Dräger Interlock® 7000 can differentiate
between mouth alcohol and breath alcohol. Mouth
alcohol caused by food and beverages that contain
small amounts of alcohol can affect the test result.
You cannot start the vehicle for a pre-defined period
of time if a certain breath alcohol concentration is
detected.
The Dräger Interlock® 7000 records all alcohol –
readings, vehicle starts, engine shut-offs and violations. This data is downloaded at each service and
sent to Roads and Maritime Services for review.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW
–– Keep the unit clean and dry at all times.
–– Use a clean and dry mouthpiece when providing
breath samples.
–– Do not eat, consume alcohol, use alcohol based
products, including mouthwash or smoke for –
15 minutes before using the Dräger Interlock® 7000.
–– Alcohol can continue to rise for up to 2 hours after
your last drink and it can take further 10 hours for
your body to return to a zero reading after large
volumes have been consumed.
–– Make sure ambient air does not contain alcohol –
or solvent vapours, e.g. air fresheners.
–– Ensure that the breath test is provided from the
driver’s seat in order for the test to be accepted.
–– Avoid placing the Dräger Interlock® 7000 on the
vehicle floor. If the device is not secured, it may
interfere with the pedals and the safe operation –
of the vehicle.
–– You must not use the Dräger Interlock® 7000
while driving. If you are asked for a breath test,
you have 10 minutes to pull over and present the
breath test. Do not turn the vehicle off.
–– It is not allowed to tamper with, abuse, misuse
and/or neglect the Dräger Interlock® 7000 or –
the Dräger Interlock® 7000 camera.
–– It is not allowed to remove the handset label as
this is seen as tampering.
–– Contact your Service Agent with any questions –
of concern.
HOW DO I START THE VEHICLE?
1.Wait 15 minutes after eating, drinking, smoking –
or using alcohol based products.
2.Ensure a clean mouthpiece is inserted properly
into the Dräger Interlock® 7000.
3.Switch the ignition on.
4.The display will show “Ready for test – Please blow”.
5.Take a deep breath and blow steadily into the
mouthpiece.
6.During the test you will hear the device click three
times. When you hear the third click, briefly suck
in some air. The coloured LEDs and the display
will indicate that the breath test is complete.
The Dräger Interlock® 7000 will display the –
following messages if the blow pattern is correct:
–– “Test passed” – A green LED confirms the result
and the vehicle can be started.
–– “Test failed” – A red LED confirms the result. –
In this case, the vehicle cannot be started.
WHAT IF I FAIL THE INITIAL TEST?
After a failed initial breath test due to detection of
alcohol, the vehicle will not start and a “Temporary
Lockout” will be activated.
A countdown will show on the display the amount
of time remaining before another breath test can be
presented. Once the temporary lockout period has
expired, repeat steps 3 – 6 under “How do I start
the vehicle” to present another breath test.
In case mouth alcohol is detected, the message –
“Interferent detected – Repeat test” will appear.
Press the “OK” button to take a new test.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM BLOWING AND SUCKING
CORRECTLY?
The Dräger Interlock® 7000 will let you know if you
are not presenting a correct sample. If an error –
occurs during the breath test, the device will alert
you with audible and visual signals. If you hear a
beep during the measurement, stop blowing and
look at the display. The following guidelines will help
you to find and eliminate the problem:
–– “Blow longer!” – You need to blow longer.
–– “Blow stronger!” – You need to blow harder.
–– “Suck after blow” – You did not suck back
correctly.
Press the “OK” button to take a new test.
BREATH TESTS WHILST DRIVING
The Dräger Interlock® 7000 will ask for random breath
test, “Rolling Retests”, while you are driving. When –
a retest is due, the unit will beep and the blue light
will flash. The display will read “Retest required –
Please blow.”
–– Pull over, out of traffic when it is safe to do so.
–– Don’t panic – You have 10 minutes to provide the
breath sample.
–– There is no need to turn the vehicle off.
–– Take the breath test as you would to start –
your vehicle.
–– Once you see “Test passed” on the display,
secure the device and continue the trip.
If you fail or do not provide a retest within the –
10 minute frame, the vehicle’s horn will sound and
hazard lights will flash. You must pull over out of
traffic and turn your vehicle off to deactivate the
vehicle’s horn and hazard lights.
VIOLATION RESET
Excessive violations will cause the Dräger Interlock® 7000
to require a service earlier than scheduled. –
A “VIOLATION RESET” can be caused by:
–– Failed initial breath tests.
–– Failed rolling retest.
–– Rolling retest that is not presented within 10
minutes.
–– Battery disconnection more than 20 minutes.
–– Tampering with the Dräger Interlock® 7000.
–– Trying to circumvent the Dräger Interlock® 7000.
If you see “Device Lockout in XX days”, you need
to contact your Service Agent to have the Dräger
Interlock® 7000 serviced. Failure to do this within the
displayed time will result in a permanent lockout.
For example, you may be due for a service in 18 days,
but a violation caused by continually ignoring the
Rolling Retest request has brought your service date
forward to 7 days. You will see “Device Lockout in –
XX day(s)” displayed on the handset. In this situation,
you must call your Service Agent and make an –
appointment within that time or the Dräger –
Interlock® 7000 will be in a permanent lockout.
SERVICE REQUIREMENTS
The Dräger Interlock® 7000 must be serviced every
two month. The following services are included in
your monthly fees and will occur at each service:
–– Check seals for tampering and handset label.
–– Check for misuse, abuse or neglect of the unit.
–– Download of data for Roads and Maritime Services.
–– Test equipment is functioning correctly.
This will take approx. 15 minutes to complete –
(20 minutes if a calibration is required).
Your scheduled services will be set to the day of
installation for each month, called the anniversary
date. For example, if the Dräger Interlock® 7000 is
installed on the 23rd of January, the next service
date will be set to the 23rd of every second month.
At each service, your next anniversary date will be
programmed into the Dräger Interlock® 7000. –
The display will show a reminder message 7 days
before your service is required, warning you that –
the Dräger Interlock® 7000 is due.
You are given an additional 7 days grace after your
service date. If your Dräger Interlock® 7000 is not
serviced within this time, it will enter into a permanent
lockout state. If you have your alcohol interlock –
serviced during the 7 days grace, your next service
date will be set back to the anniversary date.
EMERGENCY CONTACTS
A permanent lockout will require you to either have
your vehicle towed to the Service Centre or request a
Service Unlock Code. Both will be at your expense.
All calls are logged, and resulting actions recorded.
Please note that emergency calls resulting from –
actions caused by you acting outside the parameters
of the program will be at additional costs and –
payment prior to a service will be requested.
Only services relating to faulty equipment or –
installation, where evidence of tampering, misuse,
abuse, neglect or vehicle accident is not apparent
will be free of charge. However, it is your –
responsibility to bring the vehicle with the –
Dräger Interlock® 7000 to the Service Centre.
