Wims Will Miss Dr. Starr: Dr. Starr, the superintendent of MCPS, is resigning, effective February 16, 2015. Dr. Starr was a strong proponent for all of the
exciting learning opportunities we are initiating here at Wims. We thank him for
all of his support and we wish him the best.
Black History Month: February is Black history month. We are delighted to
have Terry Marshall, a notable local musician and music teacher, and his dynamic
jazz band perform for our students, teachers and community members. The
band will render a melodic historical sketch of the evolution of black music in
America focusing on it's beginnings, how music was used to facilitate the survival of African Americans from slavery to the civil rights movement, and
how African American music has influenced and transformed American culture.
We are also learning about Wilson Wims throughout the month by sharing facts
about his life on the announcements. His daughters, Mrs. Foremen and Mrs.
Thorne will be visiting us for an entire school day, on February 26, 2015 to
speak intimately with our students about their father. What a celebration!
Valentine’s Day Parties Our Valentine’s Day parties will be held on Friday, February 13, 2014. Teachers are working with their room parents in order to plan
for our upcoming parties. Please be sure to monitor all food brought in for this
celebration. It is our school policy to serve only store bought food with visible
ingredient labels. The food must be nut free and made in factories that do not
process nuts or nut products. We are asking that parents communicate with the
room parent in order to coordinate the amount of food brought in for the parties in an attempt to prevent wasted food and/or extravagant presentations. All
parties will be held from 1:50 to 2:50 p.m., except for Mrs. Holman’s, Mrs.
Sligh’s, Mrs. Sweeney’s, and Ms. Ricca’s, parties which will be from 1:00 p.m. to
2:00 p.m. and Mrs. Beshore’s party which will be from 2-2:50 p.m.

Snacks: We are considering offering students a variety of healthy snack options in the cafeteria. These could include such items as sliced apples, cereal
bars, string cheese, yogurt, Smartfood popcorn or bottled water. Do you feel
strongly about this one way or the other? Please let our cafeteria manager, Mrs.
Huynh, know your thoughts at Kelly_L_Huynh@mcpsmd.org.

Kiss & Ride reminder...
Morning arrival: Please remember that any students arriving after 8:50 a.m. must be walked
into school by a parent and signed in. Also, there was a discussion at the PTA meeting on Tuesday evening about the safety and efficiency of our arrival procedures. Please review the map
below that was handed out to parents of car riders in November and published in the December edition of our newsletter as a reminder of our process.
Remember:
Please follow the directions of the staff members on duty. Their role is to ensure a safe drop off
or pick up for you and your child(ren).
 Please pull up as far as you can before stopping to drop your child off or pick your child up.
 Children who are able to open their doors and get out should exit the car on the curb side.
 A staff member will assist any students who are not able to open the door themselves.
 Please remain in your car at all times.
 There is only one lane in use during arrival. Please refrain from getting out of the lane to go around
other cars.
 Please turn right when exiting the school during arrival.
Let’s work together to make sure that our entire school community is safe during arrival and dismissal.

Is your child going to be absent?: Please call or email Mrs. Norton
(Christine_E_Norton@mcpsmd.org) as soon as you know your child will be absent (illness, vacation, appointment, etc). Please also remember to send a note when your child returns to school. Please make
sure that all notes sent to school include your child’s first and last name.

PARCC
PARRC Assessments: This year, your children will be taking a new assessment called the
PARRC assessment. It will take the place of the MSA. Our students will take the assessment
on Chromebooks. Students will take part in practice sessions to provide opportunities for them
to see the test platform before the actual test days in March. Below is an overview of the assessment along with websites where you can find more information. The PARRC schedule for
our school been uploaded to our website so that you can make sure your child is in school on
those days.
