There is a lot of information contained in this guide, but we’re here to help you sort it all out. We’ve included all the information we think you’ll need to know in your first few weeks including, a number of useful websites and steps you will need to take to ensure your start to uni life is as smooth as possible. We recommend you read through all the information carefully to ensure you don’t miss any of the sessions we’ve lined up for you. ACADEMIC ORIENTATION - FACULTY & COURSE ORIENTATION SESSIONS Faculty and Course Welcomes are compulsory sessions for all students studying on-campus. These sessions are an essential component of your Orientation Week and will provide you with the opportunity to understand your enrolment, meet teaching and administrative staff in your Faculty and meet other students studying the same course as you. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS’ ORIENTATION It is compulsory for all new International Students holding a student visa to attend the International Student Orientation. More information about the International Student Orientation is on page 7 of this guide. NEED TO KNOW SESSIONS During Orientation Week there will be a number of additional sessions offered which are desgned to help you settle in and get organised before classes commence in Week 1. These sessions are not compulsory, however they have been designed to provide you with the resources, experiences and knowledge to enable your transition to university life. Detailed information about these sessions is included on pages 3-6 of this guide. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Orientation Week is also about relaxing and meeting new people. There will be many opportunities to get connected, so make the most of it! Monday will be one of the busiest days on the social calendar, with the Official Welcome, UniSmart session and Orientation Expo launching the week. The Welcome Lounge will be operating all week from the University Centre. This is the place to take a break and enjoy a free drink. OFFICIAL WELCOME UNISMART ORIENTATION EXPO The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students and Education) Professor David Sadler warmly invites you to attend the Official Welcome, your formal introduction to UTAS. The keynote address will be from the ViceChancellor, Professor Peter Rathjen. During this session you will hear about the services available to students at UTAS, where they are located and how to use them. Learn how to make your start at UTAS as smooth and easy as possible. The Orientation Expo is when the Sandy Bay campus comes to life. Everyone is welcome to join in and enjoy their first day at UTAS. We have arranged lots of fun activities designed to introduce you to the services at UTAS and around Hobart. We highly recommend your attendance at this event and have planned a number of other activities to follow so that you can make the most of your first day on campus. Space is limited for this event and registration is essential. UniStart an intensive program that introduces you to the academic skills and expectations at university. UniSmart and UniStart are two different programs covering different topics and we strongly recommend new students attend both. The Orientation Expo is held outside in the beautiful Central Mall area, outside Lazenby’s cafe. 3 Event Information NEED TO KNOW SESSIONS MINI PASS SESSIONS We have a great range of ‘need to know’ sessions available during Orientation Week. Some sessions are repeated and some are just offered once, so please check all the details to ensure you don’t miss anything! Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) is an academic program offering free, weekly peer-led study groups on selected units. In PASS, you work with other students to revise the course content (what to learn) and develop your academic reasoning and study skills (how to learn) in a relaxed and friendly environment. PASS sessions are led by PASS leaders, current senior students who have previously and successfully completed the unit you are studying and who have been trained to make sure that you can get the most out of the session. Keep checking the orientation web site and Facebook page for updates about these events. CAREER PLANNING - IT STARTS NOW! Take away your OWN Career ACTION Plan! Discover how UTAS Career Services can assist you in your career planning and help you start looking to the future! This 15 minute session will introduce you to your campus Career staff and the UTAS Career Hub. There are many exciting opportunities on offer. Sessions will run in the Morris Miller Library Room 1. 1 at the following times: Tuesday 17th: 10.00am Wednesday 18th: 1.00pm 4 Event Information GET ORIENTED Finding your way around the UTAS campuses can be a bit daunting at first, so we’ve arranged a number of tours for you to take part in during Orientation Week. Faculty and Course Orientation sessions will be taking place on all of the Hobart campuses. You will need to carefully check which campus your session will be held at. We’ve also provided some maps at the end of this guide to help you plan where you need to be during orientation. For those of you who are new to town, we’ve also arranged a special city tour just for you! SANDY BAY CAMPUS TOURS The main Hobart campus is set on 100 hectares in the suburb of Sandy Bay, overlooking the Derwent River and five minutes’ travel from the city centre. It has magnificent Mount Wellington as a backdrop and much of the upper campus is in natural bushland. Tours of the Sandy Bay campus are available to all students throughout Orientation Week. Our fantastic Orientation Guides and SRC representatives will be hosting the tours and sharing all their tips about campus life. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and discover all the best shortcuts! We recommend doing your tour on Monday when you visit the Orientation Expo at 12.30pm, 1.00pm & 1.30pm but you can also join a tour at either 1.00pm or 1.30pm any other day during the week. SATELLITE CAMPUS TOURS The University’s Conservatorium of Music is located near the city centre, across from picturesque St David’s Park and in close proximity to vibrant Salamanca Place. The Centre for the Arts is housed in a striking refurbished warehouse on Hunter Street adjacent to historic Sullivan’s Cove, and includes studios and gallery space. Located in the heart of the CBD next to the Royal Hobart Hospital, the Medical Science Precinct houses the School of Medicine and the Menzies Research Institute. A satellite campus of the School of Nursing and Midwifery is located across the road at the Domain. The UTAS Community Friends and Networks Programme (CFNP) provides activities and events that are designed to enable students to engage in a safe and supported environment. It is essential for all students to attend these sessions as they will provide you with information regarding your degree and enrolment and support services available to you. You will also get an opportunity to meet staff and students in your study area. If you are a distance student, we strongly recommend attending, but understand that this may not be possible. Please access the Online Orientation materials if you are unable to attend in-person. WHY DO SOME OF THESE SESSIONS LOOK DIFFERENT? Some faculties offer a general orientation session that all students are expected to attend. After the general faculty orientation session students may be separated into their disciplines or majors. Other faculties hold orientation events specifically for your course. Please check the details of each of the sessions on pages 9 - 23 to ensure you attend all that are relevant to your studies. Combined degree students should attend both of their faculty sessions. If you are unable to attend both sessions due to timetable clashes you may be able to access a session recording online. Start regularly checking your webmail and communicating with your UTAS email address. To personalise your password go to www.utas.edu.au/service-desk/ LOGIN TO THE eSTUDENT Log in to your eStudent (accessible through the UTAS current students web page) using your username and password to: • Update your contact details- the university requires your Tasmanian address and an Australian contact phone no. • Look up your class timetable- select ‘lectures only’ for the first print then select ‘all classes’ for each of your units for your 2nd print. This will show all the various workshop/tutorial and practical options. LOGIN TO MYLO Log in to MyLO (accessible through the UTAS Currents Students web page) using your username and password and familiarise yourself with the content of your units and other online resources and services listed in your MyLO. Please note that some units will not have a MyLO presence until the start of the semester and you must be enrolled in a unit to be able to access any unit related MyLO resources. 24 Pre-semester Steps CHECK WHAT TEXTBOOKS YOU’LL NEED Look up the required texts for your units online through the ‘course and unit handbook’ by entering the unit code. You can either purchase new textbooks through the Co-op bookshop or check notice boards in your faculty for second-hand copies. Be sure to check you get the right edition! Orientation is considered to be the start of your university career, so it is really important that you plan ahead so that you can attend. There are some components of orientation that are compulsory for all students. Attendance at your faculty or course orientation is compulsory for all students studying on-campus. Please note that all international students must attend the International sessions, as well as their faculty or course session. DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING? Some sessions will include free food and drinks, but not all - this is clearly stated in the guide. Bring your own lunch or purchase your lunch from one of the food outlets on campus or nearby. We also suggest you bring a sun hat, bottle of water, notepad and pen. WHO DO I CONTACT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT MY ENROLMENT? Your faculty is your first point of contact if you have questions about your enrolment. Please refer to page 8 of this guide for all the relevant contact details. WHAT IS SSAF? The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) is a compulsory services and amenities fee charged to students. The legislation and guidelines behind the fee provides a list of non-academic and non-political services on which universities are permitted to spend the funds. The fee will provide improved services and amenities for all students of the University through increased revenue. In practice, this will mean an increase in the quality and quantity of the services available to you at UTAS. Orientation is one of the many programs funded under the SSAF. Please refer to the SSAF website for further information about how to pay your SSAF and more comprehensive information about how SSAF funding is distributed: www.utas.edu.au/students/student-services-and-amenities-fee-ssaf WHERE CAN I PURCHASE FOOD DURING ORIENTATION? There are a couple of options for purchasing food on-campus. You can visit Lazenby’s cafe in the Central Mall area or visit the Refectory in the Tasmania University building. The ‘Ref’ offers the most reasonably priced meals for students to purchase and is also close to the bank, ATM, Co-op bookshop and the newsagent. HOW DO I GET TO CAMPUS? UTAS encourages all staff and students to choose sustainable transport options to access UTAS facilities. There are many options, including public transport, car-pooling, cycling or walking. Please refer to the Commercial Services and Development website for further information: www.utas.edu.au/commercial-services-development/ If parking on campus, you must park in the designated pay-and-display voucher areas.
