to accompany this young wolf on his challenging path to Tokyo 2020?
GOAL
SUB-PROJECTS 2015 - 2017
Hence the #RoadToTokyo has been divided into several sub-projects, which are itemized
below year by year.
PROJECT TOKYO 2020
The main objective is to get selected for the ‘Olympic Team Belgium’. Because the age of peak performance of a distance runner is estimated at around
27, Joppe is focusing on the Games of the XXXII and
XXXIII Olympiad, respectively in 2020 and 2024.
Hence his next main goal is to run in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The road to the Olympic Games
is long and full of twists and turns and obstacles.
In order to stand a real chance of walking this path
successfully, a long-term vision was developed.

Until he was 15, he combined several
athletics disciplines with gymnastics,
swimming and cycling at recreational
level.
This lifestyle choice was soon rewarded

at the invitation of the Flemish Athletics
League, he decided in 2012 to enrol in
the ‘Top Sports School Athletics Middle

years of his secondary education. A recognition for his rapid progress.
During this time, he became acquainted
with the various aspects of life as a top
athlete: strength training, stabilization,
recovery, nutrition, internships, international experience, dealing with injuries,
stress ....
The best possible preparation for the
next step towards the realization of his
dream.
Future
Full of courage and with incredible motivation, Joppe is now making the transition from Youth to the Junior and under 23 categories. At the KU Leuven

“Professionalism means striving for perfection,
combined with alternating tension and
relaxation in a balanced way.
Together they are the key to success.”
OPERATION
The daily routine consists of combining training with study as optimally as
possible. A balanced diet is the basis for the best
possible performance in both of these areas.
maintain a fairly constant blood glucose level.
This results is an evenly distributed energy supply throughout the day, without extreme imbalances.
4.Yin/Yang:
NUTRITION
1.Input/output:
Eating as much as is being consumed, provides
a continuously sufficient energy level.
It is the only way to maintain an ideal weight and
thus to be able to perform multiple workouts a
day with satisfactory results.
2.Combinations:
Combining or not combining certain macronutrients can promote the process of digestion.
This ensures that the energy supply is not compromised, resulting in an energy surplus allowing one to start the training as fit as a fiddle.
3.GI:
The Glycemic Index (GI) measures the impact of
certain foods on the blood sugar. By consuming
only low GI foods during the day, one’s body can
Being a top athlete, Joppe is trying to keep himself balanced as well as possible, both mentally and physically. Therefore he adjusts his diet
depending on the time of year. To minimize the
influence of external factors (climate, training
load ...), his winter meal plan differs from his
summer meal plan. The difference between
heavy training weeks and weeks of rest determines the menu and also on competition days
he sticks to an appropriate meal plan.
TRAINING
• Running, scientifically based on lactate testing
• Basic strength training and strength training,
deep muscles and large muscle groups
• Core stability, promotes good posture
• Injury Prevention Training under the guidance
of the physiotherapist
• Mental training under the guidance of the
sports psychologist
• Recovery training: cryo sauna, infrared …
• Alternatively, in case of injuries (aqua jogging,
swimming, cycling, cross trainer ...)
ACADEMIC STUDIES
With his top sports statute A at KU Leuven, Joppe gets
the opportunity to optimally participate in world class
athletics. It gives him the opportunity to spread out his
studies and to postpone exams when they interfere
with important competition or training periods.
The choice to combine academic studies with top
sports at the highest level, offers him the opportunity
of significant development, both physically and intellectually, and the opportunity to create a good balance
between mental and physical effort.
