WORSHIP Sunday, February 15, 2015 Speak to us, Mighty One, for we are eager to listen. Bless us, as we cry out to you for strength and vision. You have acted in times past to save your people. Save us now. You have sent prophets to change the world. Change us now. You have granted light in Jesus Christ. Shine on us now. Let us see your glory. Lift us to the mountaintop in this time of prayer. Stay close to us to melt away our doubts, and do not leave us, we pray, through Christ. Amen. We have just heard back from the UK Visa Office and I am extremely grateful and relieved to report back to you that our prayers have been answered (!!) and in God’s grace and mercy, we have been reinstated to the best possible outcome - we have kept our full Grade A Visa. Praise God! “It really seems quite miraculous as just over a month ago we were told in all likelihood, to expect the worst-case scenario and now, after our appeal and I believe much prayer from you and many others, that decision has been completely reversed! “Truly, I must confess, I had many days of doubt that we would see this happen. I was preparing for the worst and stressing about how we would make things work, and it has been a lesson for me to trust in the wisdom and timing of God, and a reminder that He is very much in control and I am not!” A quote from our YWAM England spokesperson: “During our last inspection, in September 2014, several issues were discovered during what turned out to be a tough audit. An action plan was immediately submitted and we believed that all of the issues raised had been successfully remedied. “ We thank God that this situation has been so satisfactorily resolved and wish to offer our heartfelt thanks to all who have given support to us during this trying time. We have felt supported and encouraged and remain wholly committed to our pledge ‘to know God and make Him Known’.” “Despite these best efforts, on 23rd December 2014 another government department, the Sponsor Compliance Unit (SCU) suspended our license citing further additional breaches, some of which had not been previously communicated to YWAM via SMU. After another round of extensive effort to address and allay 16 Church of the Palms these concerns, YWAM is delighted that the SCU have concurred and seen fit to reinstate our Grade A license. “Your prayers are powerful and effective!” “The consequences for YWAM, should our license have been revoked, would have been profound. Several hundred volunteer missionaries would have been told that they are no longer entitled to remain in the UK and would either have had to leave or find an alternative sponsor. In stark terms, almost half of YWAM England’s missionaries (approximately 350 people plus spouses and children) would have had to make alternative future plans. It would have affected YWAM’s activities, in-house training, social outreach and external ministries.” Overseas address: Jeanine Guiffrida 96 Whitaker Road, Derby DE23 6AP England, UK Email: jeanine7799@gmail.com <ywamderby.org> Tel. +44(0)1332299658 Mission Partner Advocate - Ray Angle: rayangle@comcast.com, 351-1103 www.churchofthepalms.org 17 upcoming ministry events Essential Oils of the bible Friday, February 20 10:30 a.m. - 12:30p.m. • Campus Center A fascinating presentation of the various oils mentioned in the Bible with Heather Cappon (Independent Distributor from Young Living Essential Oils - she will bring oils for you to sample and/or purchase), Marina Kensinger and Susy Welsh (powerpoint of Biblical references, interesting facts, how to use these oils, etc.) Bring your own soup, salad, and/or sandwich. Family Promise is coming to Church of the Palms! Family Promise brings the faith community together to provide food, shelter, and support services for homeless families. Over 40% of the homeless in Sarasota are families and this amazing program has an 80% success rate of getting families back into permanent housing. We have an opportunity as a congregation to, for one week every three months, play a critical role in helping these families get back on their feet. We need volunteers the week of March 22 to help us set-up and break-down, to provide supplies, to provide meals and to serve as hosts to our guests. For more information, find us under the tree in February, contact Sarah 780-3899 or Steve 587-0177 or email FamilyPromise. Palms@gmail.com. You can do this alone, as a couple, as a family; in the morning, during the day, or at night. Find a routine that works best for you. Pray: Light a candle and open your devotion time with a prayer. God who transfigured Jesus on the mountaintop, change us from the inside out. Transform our hearts so that we might shine with the light of your love, for the glory of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Reflect: Reflect on the key verses from Sunday’s reading. Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Matthew 17:1-2 Study: Study the reading and consider the background. Jesus’ transfiguration is a bit of a mystery. Yet we can still learn from it. Jesus’ appearance changed right before the disciples’ eyes; light shined from his face and his clothing became dazzling white. God’s glory shined through him that day. Jesus spoke with Moses and Elijah. Moses represented the law, and Elijah represented the prophets. Their presence suggests that Jesus came to fulfill the law and the prophets. Jesus was the one they had been waiting for. - Continued on back New Revised Standard Version Bible, copyright © 1989, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. New Revised Standard Version Bible, copyright © 1989, Division of Christian Education of the National Council God’s Story Your Story - continued - Read: Read the following daily readings to deepen your understanding of Sunday’s text. After the reading, ask the follow-up questions. Follow the teachings of Jesus, which occur shortly before his transfiguration. Sunday, Matthew 16:24-17:8, Bearing the Cross; Transfiguration Monday, Psalm 41:7-10, Psalm Tuesday, Matthew 12:1-14, Teachings of Jesus Wednesday, Matthew 18:1-9, Who Is the Greatest? Thursday, Matthew 12:15-32, Teachings of Jesus Friday, Matthew 12:33-50, Teachings of Jesus Saturday, Matthew 13:1-23, Parables of Jesus What are some common themes in the teachings of Jesus? How do the teachings turn the world on its head? Connect: Connect in conversation with others in your household. Discuss the following questions, or simply check in with “Highs” and “Lows.” What was a high point of your day? What was a low point? What actions or behaviors are taboo in your community? How would your community respond if Jesus came and performed those actions? Why would Jesus behave in a manner contrary to social norms? What truths do you hold dear, that could stand to be challenged? (In other words, have you ever considered that you might be wrong?) What would happen if you gave others the opportunity to be right? Do: By acting on what we learn, we make God’s word come alive. Do the following activity this week. Listen and learn from another person this week. Do not try to be right. Instead, let the other be right. Tell them what you learned from them. Bless: Close your devotion with a blessing. God who transfigures, enlighten us in your word this day. Let us hear your voice in new ways. Amen. Copyright © 2014 Clergy Stuff. Used with Permission. Find more at www.ClergyStuff.com. Blessing written by Pr. Chip Borgstadt.
