Physician Referral Line:
Are you looking for a physician? Are you thinking about changing physicians? Do you want to talk with a “live”
person? Call 864-255-1800, ext. 2225. You’ll be asked to leave a message and you’ll receive a return call from
a real person to help. Or you can go to our website, www.stfrancishealth.org. Whether you need a new physician
or you want more information on a recommended or current physician, St. Francis can help!
Catering Special Needs:
Please note that for all events that involve catering, particularly Lunch & Learn, we have a “set menu” that is
pre-ordered and prepared for the entire group. The entrée is available as is or as a vegetarian option only.
We suggest that you call the week before for the menu that is set up for that event to determine whether it
conflicts with your dietary limitations. We are not able to provide substitutions for any reason.
Online Registration:
Register online for all LifeWise events (free & those with fees) and complete your credit card payment (safely)
online at our website http://stfrancishealth.org/events. We’ll automatically have a record of all registrations &
you’ll receive an email confirmation for all of your events. It really does work! Note: In order to register more
than one person, you must complete the registration process separately for each person.
Milestones:
If you have a milestone birthday, anniversary or other exciting news to add in the March/April wisewords, we
want to know! Send photos & information no later than February 4, so we can share your news!

wisewords | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015
Every year we resolve to
exercise more, lose weight,
eat healthier, and spend less
money and more time with
family. Here are a few ideas
to help you finally meet those
resolutions while also
making “going green” your
resolution too!
• Bike/walk more and drive
less (it will help you drop the
last five extra pounds and
allow you to cancel your
expensive gym membership)
• Watch more sunsets and
less TV (you’ll find yourself
more relaxed)
• Source healthier food from
neighboring organic farmer
(you’ll find yourself cooking
more with family and relying
less on sodium-soaked,
highly processed foods)
Resource: GAIAM Life
When LifeWise began in 1995, it was the first program of its kind in the
community promoting physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellness through
educational opportunities, activities, and events to those 55 and older. Today
(20 years later), LifeWise remains committed to holistically engaging seniors in
a healthy and enriching life!
What was once the “Brown Bag Lunch” program 20 years ago is now called
“Lunch and Learn,” but while the names have changed the objective still
remains – educating members on important health topics with insight and
information from physicians and health educators. As we take this time to
reflect on the history of LifeWise and the legacy and traditions we’ve built each
year, we are also very excited about the future. LifeWise will continue to
empower our members to focus the positive aspects of aging and embracing a
healthy lifestyle!
We are looking forward to celebrating with you throughout the year and hearing
your stories of how LifeWise has impacted your life. Please look for more
information on special celebrations in the upcoming wisewords newsletters.

Aortic Aneurysms

The Secret No One
Wants to Talk About!
TD Convention Center
11:15 am – 1:00 pm
ST. FRANCIS millennium

10:00 - 11:00 am
An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) occurs
when the wall of the aorta progressively weakens
and begins to bulge. An AAA may continue to
enlarge and eventually rupture if left untreated,
causing severe internal bleeding and possibly
death. A ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
results in more than 15,000 people dying
annually in the United States. It’s estimated that
more than one million people are living with
undiagnosed AAA. Dr. Williams will explain how
at least 95 percent of AAAs can be successfully
treated if detected prior to rupture.
There are millions of people who deal with the
embarrassing and disruptive effects of urinary
incontinence, one of the most hidden secrets we all try
to hide and rarely discuss, especially in public. Urinary
incontinence is not just a women’s problem, men suffer
as well. In fact, about 3.4 million men in the United
States are estimated to be dealing with incontinence
right now. There are many myths about the causes
of urinary incontinence. Ms. Rush will address these
causes and help us understand why the problem exists
and what may be the root cause.
Vascular surgeons are the only physicians
treating vascular disease today who can perform
all of the treatment options available, including
medical management, minimally invasive
endovascular procedures, balloon angioplasty,
atherectomy, stent procedures and open surgical

consistently show that increasing activity levels helps
manage many chronic health conditions, such as
obesity, stress, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and more.
Mike will discuss how various forms of activity (yoga,
stretching, walking, hiking, meditation, strength training,
etc.) have a great impact on the management of various

11:15 am – 12:15 pm: Heart Disease:
What’s New & How Do I Avoid the Heart Doctor ?
If you’re like most people, you might think that heart
disease is a problem that other people have. But heart
disease is the number one killer in the United States.
About 600,000 people die of heart disease in the U. S.
every year–that’s 1 in every 4 deaths. More than half
of the deaths due to heart disease in 2009 were in
men.Heart disease is also a major cause of disability.
Dr. Stewart’s talk will help you understand the warning
signs and work-up for a heart attack and he’ll review
the therapies for a heart attack. Dr. Stewart will also
discuss what’s new in the treatment of heart disease
as well as how to avoid being “Mr. or Mrs. Ticking
Time Bomb”.

10:00 - 11:30 am
Navigating the legal issues associated with aging
can be complex. There is so much to consider &
perhaps you’re wondering where to begin. Join
us for a series of seminars designed to help you
determine which life planning tools are best suited
for your family. It is not necessary to attend all four.
Mental Health Matters
Have you ever wondered about the real story of mental
illness and how it can affect us in our older years?
Studies show that seniors are at greater risk of some
mental disorders and their complications than younger
people. In fact, statistics indicate that 25% of people
aged 55+ are experiencing some form of mental health
issue, whether it’s depression, anxiety, dementia or
substance abuse.
Many people don’t understand mental illness or even
acknowledge its existence. Some seniors are ashamed
or frightened by their symptoms or believe that they are
an inevitable part of aging. Often, seniors, their loved
ones and friends, and even their doctors fail to
recognize the symptoms of treatable mental illness.
It’s time to end the stigma of mental illness! Join us and
get the information you need to help yourself or those
you love, to live life to its full potential.

cemetery provider you choose.
Key questions to be addressed include:
• Why are so many people now choosing cremation?
• How do we begin the process of pre-planning?
• What should we consider when comparison shopping?
• What happens to my pre-arrangements if I move?

differences between them.
