Public engagement... Not a trend, but the future
Everyone wants an engaged public, but do our museums and galleries actively make our communities better places to
live? As museums struggle for operating funding, we must reevaluate not only who comes through our doors, but also who
remains outside them. We must ask how public engagement differs from audience development, and how it impacts the
bottom line.
Today museums are more than simply repositories — they are community hubs, meeting places and event venues, learning
experiences, great dining and retail destinations, providers of social services and date nights. Yet we also remain the keepers
of the material evidence of human activity, thought, belief, understanding.
So, as we dig into our collections and exhibit the tangible evidence of human activity — we must also embrace the intangible
side of the equation: Museums are places built upon human relationships. Relationships between visitors, staff, funders,
donors, and stakeholders — people, both past and present.
If we believe that a high quality, vital, and diverse cultural sector is directly connected to the depth and diversity of experiences
that Canadians have with our museums and galleries, then we must believe that public engagement is critical to the
development and success of our sector. As in any successful relationship, we must have commitment, trust, communication,
and openness to change.
So what do our relationships look like today? How are we building them, and are we providing our publics what they need?
Is engaging with the public indeed our primary role? These are the critical questions to be addressed at CMA 2015.
Delegate Profile: More than 400 decision makers who are directly involved with Canada’s cultural institutes are
expected to participate. These will include, Executive Directors, Chief Financial Officers, Curators, Educators, Interpreters
and Senior Managers, as well as Board Members.
Sessions: Plenaries, breakouts, workshops and study tours will explore a variety of topics, many related to the
conference theme — public engagement.
