BONDE CHARGE SHOWS >EM WHO=S THE BOSS
DISSIDENT TAKES POWER IN ORR
Metaboss (Street Boss) seemed to sprout wings
when charging past three-quarters of the field in the
final furlong of Golden Gate=s GIII El Camino Real Derby
yesterday en route to a dominating victory. Besides
scoring his first black-type win
in as many tries in an ultraimpressive fashion, the Jeff
Bonde pupil also picked up
10 qualifying points towards
the Run for the Roses.

assembled via Facebook. AIncredible turn of foot! Every
workout is the same way. He sees the top of the
stretch, he starts getting into gear and he finishes like a
freight train. He is just a horse with a very big heart,
who just has no quit in him. He=s been an amazing,
amazing, amazing horse for us. He is a May 17 foal, so
it is just amazing what he is doing right now. We=re
shocked. I was going to be very happy with just hitting
the board. This is beyond my imagination.@ Cont. p3

Bonde Charges Shows >Em Who=s the Boss cont. from p1
Third on debut sprinting over the turf at Santa Anita
Oct. 10, Metaboss finished an even fourth behind
J “TDN Rising Star” J and GIII Delta Downs
Jackpot winner Ocho Ocho Ocho (Street Sense) next
out in the 6 1/2-furlong Juvenile Turf Sprint S., which
was rained off the turf and onto the Arcadia main track
Nov. 1. Extended to 1 1/16 back on the sod next time
at Del Mar, the chestnut finished a much improved
second behind subsequent Eddie Logan S. hero Bolo
(Temple City) Nov. 29. Favored at 4-5 to get the job
done next out going 1 1/8 miles back on the Arcadia
lawn, the sophomore displayed the same powerful turn
of foot he employed yesterday to clock a final quarter
in :11.47 and earn his well deserved diploma. Flying
under the radar at the windows in this step up to blacktype company, Metaboss was away well and took up
position in a ground-saving eighth while Indianaughty
(Indian Charlie) and favored Conquest Typhoon
exchanged blows on the front end through pedestrian
early splits of :25.29 and :49.25. Inching closer on the
backstretch, the chestnut came charging seven-wide
off the far turn with Harmonic (Congrats) right beside
him and uncorked a furious rally in the lane to inhale
the rest of the field and storm home a very impressive
winner. Harmonic looked like he might take flight
alongside the winner in early stretch, but he stalled a
bit halfway home and finished a respectable fourth.
Early pacesetter Indianaughty faded to ninth. AI was
very happy in the first part [of the race] when he
relaxed,@ winning rider and Hall of Famer Alex Solis
said. AI knew he was going to give me that kick and I
just had to be patient. When I got to the 5/16-pole, I
got him in the clear and he did the rest.@ As for future
plans for the colt, Metanovic said, ANext step if we play
our cards right is going to be the [GIII] Spiral [S. Mar.
21] most likely at Turfway. If he goes through that
situation with flying colors we would consider [trying
dirt]. I think our best move right now is to keep it
conservative, and do what we know best and take the
money.@

Laurel specialist Lady Sabelia displayed her affinity for
this course once again with a front-running victory to
garner her first graded stakes win. Only out of the
money once in her 13 lifetime starts, the homebred
boasts a record of 7-5-1-1 sprinting over this strip. The
dark bay kicked off last term with a pair of victories in a
Pimlico optional claimer May 23 and Monmouth=s Red
Cross S. June 22. Her only loss of the season came at
Parx, where she finished third in a sloppy renewal of
the Cornucopia S. Oct. 11. Returning to her winning
ways in an optional claimer here Oct. 29, the 5-year-old
wired this venue=s Willa on the Move S. Dec. 6 and
captured the What A Summer S. over this track and trip
last time Jan. 3. Sent off as the co-second choice
alongside GISP Princess Violet, Lady Sabelia got off to
a good beginning, unlike favored GI La Brea S. heroine
Sam=s Sister (Brother Derek), who was pinched at the
break forcing rider Elvis Trujillo to take back. Assuming
her preferred position at the head of affairs, Lady
Sabelia doled out swift early splits of :22.67 and
:45.61 from the fence while tracked intently by
longshot Stormy Novel (Bernardini) and Princess Violet.
Sam=s Sister came alive at this point as well and made
a menacing three-wide bid to take on those rivals
turning for home, but came up empty in the stretch.
Lady Sabelia, however, proved not for catching in the
lane and strode home to a comfortable victory over the
very game Princess Violet. Sam=s Sister held on for
fourth and Stormy Novel faded to sixth.

Dissident Takes Powers in Orr cont. from p1
The first four around the home turn were in fact the
first four across the line with Spillway (GB) (Rail Link
{GB}) and Happy Trails (Aus) (Good Journey) both
working home very well late, indicating a step up from
the 1400 meters will be well in their favor.
Winning the race by one and a half lengths in a time
of 1:23.38, the victory had Moody indicating that the
G1 Futurity S. over course and distance was next on
the cards, with races like the G1 George Ryder S.
(1500m) and the G1 Doncaster H. (1600m) well within
the grasp of Dissident. Dissident=s triumph presented
Moody with a fifth Orr victory in the last six years.
However, the three-time champion trainer hadn=t scored
at the highest level since last October, when the same
horse won the G1 Makybe Diva S., and recently found
himself at the heart of the cobalt scandal, being one of
three Victorian trainers under investigation for horses

lot of money in him. It=s not a matter of protecting him,
it=s a matter of not running him in races he=s not suited.
As long as the tracks stay dry you will see him. He=s
not at his best on soft ground.@
Bred by Widden Stud, Dissident was a A$210,000
purchase by Peter Moody at the 2012 Magic Millions
Gold Coast yearling sale. He is by the 2008 Golden
Slipper winner and Widden Stud resident Sebring (Aus)
(More Than Ready), whose stud career has been off to
a flying start. He was Australia=s leading second-season
sire and covered 192 mares last year at the increased
fee of A$60,000, including champion sprinter Black
Caviar (Aus).
Dissident raced for Peter Moody and the One For The
Boys syndicate until a stud deal was concluded late last
year. The 4-year-old now carries the colors of the China
Horse Club and is owned by a partnership involving
such powerful operations as Newgate Farm, Segenhoe
Thoroughbreds, Laurel Oak and Kia-Ora Stud.
He will eventually retire to Newgate Farm in New
South Wales.
AIt is great to be in partnership with the China Horse
Club in a horse as good as Dissident,@ said Newgate
Farm manager Henry Field. AHe is a fantastic racehorse
and a tremendous stallion prospect. Today was
exceptional, it really was. I will be heading up to
Singapore in a few days time for the CECF Singapore
Cup and look forward to catching up with the China
Horse Club team and celebrating. Dissident is the fourth
individual G1 winner for the China Horse Club, which
only began racing horses in April 2013.

PROMISING PRELUDE FOR UNBEATEN
FONTITON
Fontiton (Aus) (Turffontein {Aus}) stamped her
claims for the G1 Blue Diamond S. when stretching her
unbeaten record to three in the G2 Blue Diamond
Prelude over 1100 meters. The Robert Smerdon trainee
settled off the blistering early fractions set by Heatherly
(Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}) and looked slightly unbalanced
around the home turn. Jockey Mark Zahra gave her
time to find her stride entering the straight and the filly
surged clear, scoring by a length and three quarters
over Miss Gidget (Aus) (Gonski {Aus}), with the Gai
Waterhouse-trained Flamboyant Lass (Aus) (Stratum
{Aus}) three-quarters-of-a-length back in third.
Fontiton was tackling 1100 meters for the first time
and covered the distance in 1:02.83, while the time for
the colts= division was
1:03.66. "To me, she
looks like a horse that will
be better over further,@
Smerdon said. "We hoped
she=d be a nice 3-year-old
that would get out to
middle distance but she=s
doing things we didn=t
predict. We know she=s
got so much natural
Fontiton
ability, but for her to be
Racing Victora
able to be held up for one
run is a tremendous asset.@
Fontiton was consigned by Blue Gum Farm at the
Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, where she was knocked
down to Matchem Racing for A$110,000, making her
the most expensive yearling from the second crop of
dual Group 1 winner Turffontein.
>BRAVE= PRELUDE WINNER FOR
STARSPANGLEDBANNER
Starspangledbanner (Aus) (Choisir {Aus})=s first
Northern Hemisphere crop of juveniles was at the races
in 2014 and lifted some outstanding results, despite
only comprising 17 runners. The stallion endured
fertility issues during his
>first= stud career at
Coolmore in Ireland and
had only 33 foals on the
ground, yet 10 of these
won at two and they
included the G1 Prix
Morny hero The Wow
Signal (Ire) as well as
G2 Queen Mary S. scorer
Anthem Alexander (Ire).
In Australia, where the
Starspangledbanner
flashy chestnut shuttled
Racing Post
before being sent back to
Ballydoyle, Of The Brave
(Aus) provided Starspangledbanner with a first stakes
trophy when taking the Listed Debutant S. first time
out, Oct. 11.
Yesterday at Caulfield, the Mark Riley-trained juvenile
doubled up with a narrow win in the G3 Blue Diamond
Prelude S. for colts and geldings, opening his sire=s
group account in his home country.
Of The Brave had to live up to his name to prevail in
the 1100-meter contest as the four-month break
seemed to be taking its toll in the dying strides
following a front-running ride, yet the colt dug deep to
hold off Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum=s
fast-finishing Pride Of Dubai (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}),
with Godolphin=s Sampeah (Aus) (Exceed And Excel
{Aus}) checking in third. Bought for A$170,000 at the
Magic Millions Gold Coast sale, Of The Brave is a threeparts brother to the Group 3-winning sprinter Eloping
(Aus) (Choisir {Aus}), who was unplaced in the
G2 Rubiton S. on the same card.
AHe=s won two from two so has earned his place in
the Blue Diamond,@ said Riley, who was recently found
guilty of administering the prohibited substance TCO2
to one of his runners and faces a three-year suspension.
AHe was vulnerable today. I said if he was going to get
beaten, today would be the day,@ the trainer continued.
AHe needed that hard run to top him off and he=s going
into the Blue Diamond on the way up. He=s really
matured since the Debutant S. and just keeps going
forward.@
Riley=s penalty hearing in front of the Racing Appeals
and Disciplinary Board has been set for Feb. 24, four
days before the running of the G1 Blue Diamond S.
Starspangledbanner retired to stud for a second time
in 2013, on the back of a lackluster return to
competition. He covered 93 mares at Rosemont Stud
last season before relocating to Coolmore Australia.
Although he won=t be shuttling to Ireland this term, it
was recently announced that he would serve Northern
Hemisphere time at a fee of A$27,500.
CONTRIBUTER IMPRESSES IN APOLLO
Godolphin=s European import Contributer (Ire) (High
Chaparral {Ire}) added yet more Southern Hemisphere
black type to the outstanding tally of his recently
deceased sire when sprinting to a 1 1/2-length victory
in the G2 Apollo S. at Randwick Saturday. The former
charge of Ed Dunlop idled at the back of the field before
shifting into overdrive in a matter of strides entering the
straight to win running away from Ninth Legion (Aus)
(Fastnet Rock {Aus}).
Fellow European-import
Weary (Fr) (Astronomer
Royal {Ire}), winner of the
G2 Expressway S. last
time out, held on for
third.
Bred by Lady O=Reilly=s
Petra Bloodstock Agency,
Contributer carried the
Contributer
silks of George Bolton to
Racing and Sports
four victories in the UK,
including a pair of listed events over 2000 meters, from
only nine starts. Cont. p9

Contributor Impresses in Apollo cont.
He was snapped up by Godolphin on the back of his
comfortable win in the listed Wolferton H. at Royal
Ascot last June. The 5-year-old opened his Australian
account at first asking with an impressive display in the
2000-meter G3 David Jones Cup at Caulfield, before
being well beaten in the G1 Emirates S. over a mile on
firm ground.
AThat is very satisfying because he has really been
pleasing us at home and he has come and done it on
race day,@ commented trainer John O'Shea. AHe is a 10
furlong horse winning first-up over 1400 meters, so
there are plenty of encouraging signs moving forward.@
AThere is a nice program of races for him,@ O=Shea
continued. ALike any [imported] horse that has a crack
over here, he seems to improve and he has certainly
taken the next step after a break. He just has the right
attitude, he switches off and just lets go when James
[McDonald] asks him to go.@
HAPTIC SLIPPER BOUND
As was widely anticipated, Godolphin did win the
listed Lonhro Plate at Randwick Saturday, although not
with the horse the market expected. Impressive debut
winner Furnaces (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) was
sent off the hot favorite for the 1100-meter contest,
yet the colt had to settled for
the runner-up spot behind
stable mate Haptic (Aus)
(Exceed And Excel {Aus}).
The colt, who was another
first-time-out winner for
Godolphin in January, led
from wire to wire to win by
three-quarters of a length.
Haptic
AHe=s a big, tough, hardy fella
Racing and Sports
and Blake [Shinn] rode him
accordingly,@ said John O=Shea, who later made it a
group double for Godolphin at Randwick courtesy of
Contributer (Ire). AHe is what he is, a jump and run sort
of horse that makes his own luck and he=s won his way
into a Slipper,@ he continued. The conditioner indicated
that Haptic would likely not race again until the
G1 Golden Slipper Mar. 21 at Rosehill, and simply have
a barrier trial ahead of the big day.
HK SPRINT REMATCH IN CHAIRMAN=S
Aerovelocity (NZ) (Pins {Aus}) and Peniaphobia (Ire)
(Dandy Man {Ire}), who led home a 1-2 finish for Hong
Kong in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint Dec. 14,
renew their acquaintances in this afternoon=s
Chairman=s Sprint Prize over the metric six furlongs at
Sha Tin Racecourse, with each looking ahead at the
G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen Mar. 28.
First-up winner of the Premier Bowl H. over the
course and distance Oct. 26, Aerovelocity encountered
all sorts of trouble behind the weakening Amber Sky
(Aus) (Exceed and
Excel {Aus}) and
finished last behind
wide-trip Peniaphobia
in the G2 Jockey Club
Sprint Nov. 23.
Leaving nothing to
chance last time on
international day, Zac
Purton sent
Aerovelocity gets the better of
Aerovelocity to the
Peniaphobia in the HK Sprint HKJC.com
front and led past
every pole to turn the tables by a neck. Peniaphobia has
the benefit of one start since, a gutsy success in the
Centenary Sprint Cup going the straight 1000 meters
Jan. 25, and the duo collides here this afternoon with
very little between them.
With Douglas Whyte sticking with Peniaphobia,
trainer Tony Cruz has tabbed the visiting Christophe
Soumillon for the ride on Gold-Fun (Ire) (Le Vie dei
Colori {GB}), who tries this distance for the first time in
his 21-race career. Runner-up to Able Friend (Aus)
(Shamardal) in the Nov. 23 G2 Jockey Club Mile and in
the G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile Dec. 14, the flashy
chestnut was most recently sixth to his archrival in the
G1 Stewards= Cup Jan. 19.
The Chairman=s Sprint Prize marks the return to
action of Dan Excel (Ire) (Shamardal), who was forced
to abort an Australian campaign after coming down
with a throat infection. Today=s trip is obviously on the
short side, and the 7-year-old will certainly improve
with the G1 Queen=s Silver Jubilee Cup Mar. 15 and the
G1 Champions= Mile May 3 objectives down the road.

DERBY HOPEFULS SQUARE OFF IN CLASSIC CUP
A dozen 4-year-olds face the starter for today=s Hong
Kong Classic Cup, the final restricted prep race for the
HK$18 million (US$2.32 million) Hong Kong Derby in
four weeks= time.
Beauty Only (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) knocked
out a Class 2 handicap going a mile Nov. 9, but faltered
to be 11th as the
favorite after racing
atypically close to the
pace in a similar event
on the International
Races undercard
Dec. 14. He improved
some to finish fourth in
Class 2 Jan. 4, but
came full circle two
Beauty Only
HKJC.com
weeks later, besting the
well-regarded Divine
Calling (Aus) (Stratum {Aus}) by 2 1/4 lengths in the
Hong Kong Classic Mile. He finished with good energy
that afternoon for leading rider Joao Moreira,
suggesting that today=s trip--and beyond--is well within
his scope.
Though he is rated 16 pounds inferior to the favorite,
Redkirk Warrior (GB) (Notnowcato {GB}) is getting a fair
bit of attention in the markets. The subject of a suspect
ride from Gerald Mosse in his local debut which saw
the Frenchman sacked for 15 minutes, the chestnut
was a close fifth in that Class 3 test over 1400 meters
Jan. 4, but overcame a difficult trip last time and
clawed back pacesetting favorite Contentment (Aus)
(Hussonet) to score by a half-length going the metric
mile Feb. 1.
Making his local debut in this contentious affair is
Top Ace (Kitten=s Joy), the lone representative for his
sire in Hong Kong. Formerly trained in Italy as Steaming
Kitten for Ken and Sarah Ramsey by Gianluca Bietolini,
the chestnut annexed the Listed Premio Botticelli at
Rome last April and took the G3 Premio Del Giubileo in
his penultimate European appearance June 29. He was
last seen checking in fifth in the G2 Prix Guillaume
d=Ornano at Deauville Aug. 15, and has trialled well
locally, but hooks some race-fit rivals this afternoon.

before so it=s nothing new for him,@ traveling head lad
Robin Trevor-Jones told Racing.com.
AWe=re really happy with the way he traveled and the
condition he=s arrived here in, although it=s a bit warmer
than what we=re used to,@ he quipped.
Red Cadeaux is expected to kick off his 2015
Australian campaign in the G1 Australian Cup at

EUROPEAN-BRED WINNERS
RON THE GREEK WINS SPILL-MARRED CUP
Ron the Greek (Full Mandate) proved far too classy
for his rivals in Saturday=s The Custodian of the Two
Holy Mosques Cup (King=s Cup) at Janadriyah
Racetrack in Riyadh, a race marred by a terrible spill
which resulted in a reported three equine fatalities.
Drawn in stall five, Ron the Greek raced in about a joint
third early on just and dropped a few positions as a wall
of four developed just ahead of him at the midway
point. With about five furlongs to travel, a horse racing
in the vanguard and three or four off the inside, broke
down and caused massive chain reaction and spills
further back in the field. Just 11 of the 18 starters
finished the race, while at least three, including King of
the Danes (GB) (Dansili {GB}) were reportedly
euthanized. Jockey Eddie Castro, who was aboard that
stricken horse, Alan Garcia, Frankie Dettori and Alonso
Quinonez were among those involved in the accident,
though none suffered a serious injury, according to
several Twitter accounts. Castro was reportedly
transported to a local hospital for observation. Trained
by former Christophe Clement assistant Nicholas
Bachalard for King Abdulaziz and Sons, Ron the Greek
found room one off the fence in upper stretch and
powered away to score by seven lengths 2:31.47 for
the 2400 meters (video) (spill occurs at 1:46 mark of
video). Gone Dutch (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) closed for
second beneath Christophe Soumillon, and that duo
was a half-length ahead of Fly Solo (GB) (Soviet Star).
Ron the Greek is a candidate to cut back to 10 furlongs
for the G1 Dubai World Cup at Meydan Mar. 28.
