takes over
Melbourne, Feb 12:
Melbourne and Christchurch are
all decked up to host the opening
ceremony for the eleventh ICC World
Cup 2015, which will see India defending the crown they re-claimed in
2011 on home soil.
The Melbourne celebration at Sidney Myer Music Bowl will involve
World Cup players and legends,
cultural and music performances, a
spectacular fireworks display and a
yet-to-be-revealed ‘special moment.’
Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport
and Major Events John Eren said
Melbourne would now be the scene
of the opening event, the first match
on Australian soil when Australia will
play against England on 14 February, and the final at the Melbournbe
Cricket Ground (MCG) on 29 March.
‘We are delighted that Melburnians
and visitors from all over the world will
have a chance to attend this once-ina-generation event at the Sidney Myer
Music Bowl,’ Eren was quoted as saying by Cricket Australia (CA) website.
At the core of all these activations,

Chennai, Feb 12:
If you have been on social media (twitter, facebook & whatsapp et al), you
would have doubtless been a recipient
of the many memes on DMDK supremo Vijayakanth. Those
spoofy jokes on him are
all over the social media
platforms like a rash.
But the DMDK thinks it
is time to put a full stop to
them as the memes seem Vijayakanth
to have crossed all manner of personal decency. Many of the
memes, to be honest, make uncharitable
connection to Vijayakanth’s apparent
lack of finesse with English pronounciation and his alleged drinking habits.
Anyway, DMDK men led by party
whip Charamohan and MLA Nallathambi today called on City Police
Commissioner and submitted a
complaint seeking action on those
making these memes on their leader
in facebook, twitter and whatsapp.
They alleged that it the whole thing is
demeaning. It is wrong to make fun
of such a senior politcian and sought
action against those spreading them.
The complaint has been forwarded
to Central Crime Branch for further
investigation.
Rcently several posts making fun of
Vijayakanth have gone viral. He was
spoofed as spelling US President
Obama as ‘Onga Appa Amma’, Kungfu Panda as ‘Kumkuma Poo Bonda’
and Kejriwal as ‘Kajal Agarwal’.

from Economic Offences Wing were
also reportedly present during the

Tharoor was questioned at south

The SIT team had earlier questioned

capital including granting full Statehood.
Kejriwal, who was accompanied by senior AAP
leader Manish Sisodia, reached the PM’s residence
around 10:30 a.m and the meeting lasted for around
15 minutes.
‘Arvind told the Prime Minister that both the Centre
and the State government enjoy strong majority,
therefore, it is a golden opportunity for both to work
together to make Delhi a better city,’ Sisodia told
reporters after the meeting.
Kejriwal also invited Modi to his oath-taking ceremony at the Ramlila Grounds on 14 February. However,
the Prime Minister expressed his inability as he would
be out of the city on that day.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor was today
questioned by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for

Modi told Kejriwal that the Centre
will think on the issue of giving complete Statehood to Delhi.
Yesterday, Kejriwal met President
Pranab Mukherjee and thanked him
for his blessings and guidance.
The President, in turn, gifted Kejriwal two books - ‘Constitution of India’

Manish Sisodia termed it as a

Man kills debtor,
sets himself on fire
NT Bureau
Chennai, Feb 12:
A money lender and a borrower were
killed when the latter set fire to the two,
following a dispute at Guindy last night.
According to police, Amul Raj (45)
from Maduvinkarai in Venkatapuram
near Guindy, had lent Rs two lakh to
Shanmugam (50) of the same locality
two years ago, to set up a shop.
It is reported that Shanmugam
lives with his physically-challenged
wife Rajeshwari (40). Police said, of
late, Amul Raj had been pressurising
Shanmugam to repay the loan, and
last evening, a talk over the borrowed
money began between the two.
During the argument, Shanmugam
and his wife reportedly said that they
would die as they are unable to repay
the money. Following this,
Amul Raj said that he would kill himself instead and poured kerosene on
him and the couple, in a bid to scare
them. He, however inadvertently set
fire which spread to the three of them.
While Shanmugam died on the way to
the hospital, Amul Raj passed away at midnight. Rajeshwari had suffered 40 per cent
burn injuries and is undergoing treatment
at Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital.

‘To ensure that the future generation
starts caring for the environment at an
early age and by propagating this idea
through the students and teachers,
we believe that the message of safe

The reasons cited for increase in ewaste generation are said to be rapid
growth in technology, affordable prices
and increasing usage, which has led
consumers end up discarding their
older electronics for newer ones.
Shankar from e-CAP says, ‘The use
of electronic devices has proliferated

been increasing rapidly. E-waste
poses a grave danger to environment
and people when it is not disposed in
the right way’.
‘Proper awareness among consumers is imperative and initiating
a training programme for the representatives from the schools was no
easy task. Throughout our campaign,
teachers played a crucial role and
were eye-openers to children’, he
states.
To address the growing problem
of e-waste in the city, he says, more
programmes and events in favour
of environment awareness must be
carried out in schools in regular time
intervals for a greater impact on the
society. ‘Also, we have planned to
club our project with Swachh Bharat,’
he adds.
As part of the awareness programme e-waste collection bins
were distributed to the schools
visited by e-CAP members to dispose their old electronic devices for
recycling.
The campaign that was held in last
November and after its completion,
e-wastes were collected from the
schools. The schools that contributed more were awarded prizes. Also,
students and teachers who have
contributed most were awarded

more such programmes in future.
Meanwhile what happens to the

Digital way
n the last decade, everything that had to be manufactured in
India and exported, were being imported from various parts
of the world. That’s why our import bill has grown substantially.
Therefore, the new initiatives of the government whether it is Make
in India or Digital India or Skill India, should all converge so that
India can grow at 9-10 per cent per annum and create jobs. The
Make in India looks at 25 sectors --- it looks at core competencies of
India across the sector and how India can penetrate global markets.
But Make in India cannot happen without Digital India because
India has been a reluctant manufacturer and a reluctant urbaniser. If
India needs to achieve a quantum jump, the broadband, the spectrum
behind it, the country needs to use technology to leapfrog. What
Digital India aims to do is to provide the technology, the broadband
and the spectrum behind it. But manufacturing and technology alone
cannot help you ---- you can grow faster but that will be jobless
growth. What Skill India does is to create skills for a vast segment
of population so that as India manufactures, as India urbanises, as
Indians moves from rural to urban areas, as it happens in economic
development, you keep creating jobs. This is what happens when
economy expands.
If you look at the history of the world, in 1975, China and India were
at the same level of growth. China was also a reluctant manufacturer
and a reluctant urbaniser. But in 1975, the Chinese Communist Party
decided they will manufacture for the rest of the world and they will
urbanise. So, they started creating new manufacturing cities. When
they started creating manufacturing cities, people moved from rural
areas to urban areas. People moved, young workers moved, wives
and children moved to new manufacturing cities. Since 1975, China
has created 400 new cities --- it’s mid-boggling. China grew at an
average 10 per cent per annum. If you grow at 10 per cent, you
double your income in 7 years. Therefore, between 1975 and 2010,
China’s income grew 16 folds. It lifted almost 800 million people
above the poverty line. Therefore, India has no other option but to
grow at 10 per cent per annum and that’s feasible.
For India’s GDP to grow at that level, manufacturing must grow
at 14-15 per cent and, therefore, Make in India is a very critical
programme for the government. Make in India has identified sectors,
it is working in partnership with the private sector, we are working
in partnership with different ministries across the government and
its ambition is that manufacturing must drive India’s growth. And,
therefore, to our mind we need unleashing of creative energy in
India. India must become a nation of job creators rather than being
job seekers.
We must create young entrepreneurs. And, we need to unleash
the energy of India in terms of entrepreneurship. We should not be
a nation of manufacturers but we should also become a nation of
design and innovation. And, actually the innovative spirit of India
must push the growth to a high trajectory.
You can’t be a manufacturer without being competitive. This is
globalised economy and we are in a globalised market. You have to
penetrate the global market and be a part of global supply chain. So,
you can’t manufacture without being competitive. Being a reluctant
manufacturer and a reluctant urbaniser, India can use technology to
leapfrog, it can skip some processes of growth.
If you want to be influential, give
praise when due, criticism when
due. U won’t be liked always, but
your voice will count.

Vanishing playgrounds
Sir,
It is unfortunate that a lack of open spaces and playgrounds has forced
children in cities to stay indoors and remain glued to computers and other
electronic gadgets.
The current generation plays all outdoor games like cricket, football, tennis
on computers! Physical play is the best way to refresh the mind and is what
helps children maintain good health and concentrate on their studies. It is in
play that children learn some of life’s most important lessons, like learning
to lose but not to be a loser, and not letting success go to their heads nor
failure to their hearts. It also involves leadership and team-building skills,
all of which cannot be taught in a classroom.

Obama seeks war powers
Vows Islamic State is ‘going to lose’
WASHINGTON:
Vowing that Islamic State forces are
‘going to lose,’ US President Barack
Obama urged Congress to authorise
military action against terrorists who
are cutting a swath across the Middle
East. Yet he ruled out large-scale US
ground combat operations reminiscent of Iraq and Afghanistan.
‘I’m convinced that the United States
should not get dragged back into
another prolonged ground war,’ the
president said at the White House as
he set Congress on a path to its first
war-powers vote in 13 years.
Despite Obama’s words of reassurance, initial reaction in Congress
amounted to bipartisan skepticism, with
much of the dissatisfaction centered
on his attempt to find a political middle
ground with respect to ground forces.
Republicans expressed unhappiness that he had chosen to exclude
any long-term commitment of ground

dismay that he had opened the door
to deployment at all.

Dark matter present
at the heart of
Milky Way
LONDON:
Researchers have found the first
direct observational proof of the
presence of dark matter in the
innermost part of the Milky Way,
including in our own cosmic neighbourhood and around the Earth.
A new study demonstrates that
large amounts of dark matter
exist around us, and also between us and the

constitutes a
fundamental
step forward in
the quest for the

The existence of dark matter in

well established. But historically it
has proven very difficult to establish
the presence of dark matter in the

This is due to the difficulty of
measuring the rotation of gas
and stars with the needed precision from our own position in the
Milky Way.

Coach bets big on Afridi
Adelaide, Feb 12:
Pakistan have found some momentum ahead of the World Cup but
have not settled on their best line-up
for their tournament opener against
champions India this weekend, coach
Waqar Younis said.
Victories over Bangladesh and England this week have given the 1992
champions a real surge of confidence going into Sunday’s
match in Adelaide against
a team they have never
beaten at the World Cup.
‘We needed momentum,
we didn’t really play any
really good cricket in the
recent past,’ Waqar told reporters after the four-wicket
victory over England.
‘So the momentum and the confidence we got from these last two
games will definitely help.
‘India has always been a tough
opponent so we’re not going to take
it easy. We’re going to make sure
we wake up on that morning in a
positive frame of mind and look to
win this time.’
Waqar hailed Misbah-ul-Haq as
one of his country’s best ever oneday finishers and said, ‘he reads the
game really well.’
‘He reads the scoreboard really well
and as a captain he also takes the
responsibility. Sometimes, when you
lose early wickets, he gets enough
time and he is a big hitter also. I
don’t know if I should say it, but for
Pakistan, for someone batting at
No. 5 or No. 6 he’s definitely
at the top.’
Waqar was also delighted
by the contribution of Umar
Akmal, who helped Misbah
add 133 runs in 22 overs
for Pakistan’s fifth wicket in
a stand that effectively won the
match.
Pakistan lost several players to
injury and suspension for the tournament but Waqar said his main
problem in finding the right balance
was their lack of all-rounders, barring 34-year-old Shahid Afridi.

Chennai, Feb 12:
Chief Minister O Panneerselvam today said the Tamilnadu
government, after getting permission from the Centre, will send a
rescue team of 150-fishermen to
Sri Lanka, to repair and bring 81
boats (which are in the island nation’s custody).
In a statement here, he said
that State Fisheries Department
Assistant Director and Inspector
have already been sent to Sri
Lanka with necessary documents
after Indian consulate official sent
an e-mail on 11 February that
attempts were being made to
release the boats seized by the
Lankan Navy.
He also recalled the various letters by AIADMK general secretary
J Jayalalithaa to the Centre urging
steps to release these boats.
Reports said on Wednesday
that Sri Lankan government has
decided to release all the fishing
boats in its custody following New
Delhi’s intervention.
The island government had
asked Indian officials to produce
the documents of the boats for
verification in Sri Lanka, said
reports.
Gopinathan, Assistant Director of Fisheries, was quoted as
saying by PTI that the fisheries
department officials would leave
Chennai
with the registration certificate
of the fishing boats, under the
custody of Sri Lanka.
The documents would be produced at the local court in SriLanka and after verification, they
would be released by the Court,
he said.
Senior BJP leaders, including
Leader of Opposition Nand Kishore
Yadav, former deputy chief minister
Sushil Kumar Modi and Usha Vidhyarti have made it clear that party
would support Manjhi in the assembly.
State BJP president Mangal Pandey
said the party wants Manjhi back. Nitish Kumar along with 130 legislators
of his JD-U, the Rashtriya Janata Dal,
the Congress and the Communist
Party of India, met President Pranab
Mukherjee in Delhi Wednesday night
to show his strength.
Battle lines were clearly drawn in
Bihar as Chief Minister Jitan Ram
Manjhi, expelled from the ruling
JD-U on Monday and sought to
prove his majority on the floor of
the assembly even as his predecessor Nitish Kumar staked
claim to form the government and
accused Manjhi of ‘horse-trading’.

While Kejriwal was involved in politics,
his wife had to ensure that both their children Harshita and Pulkit led normal lives

Initially, Harshita
would be disturbed with the attacks on her

she had become immune to the criticism.
Kejriwal’s parents Govind Ram and Geeta
have been constant source of support for
Kejriwal. In 1980, Govind Ram ensured that
his son’s education was never interrupted,

support from family members that made
sure that Kejriwal could successfully enter
activism and politics.

The warm-up games themselves
prove to be opportunities for the teams
to experiment and don’t have official
status. Former Indian captain Sunil
Gavaskar, while commenting on the
India-Australia encounter the other day
was quite critical of sides opting to give
all the 15 members a hit and wanted
captains to take these outings seriously
and play it as 11-a-side ones.
Incidentally, Indian captain M S
Dhoni remarked after the
win over Afghanistan on
Tuesday that he was not
one who fancied these
practice matches and
said, ‘I’m not a big fan
positives into the opener against
arch-rivals India.
Gavaskar was of the opinion that
playing matches was a better option
than
nets and said the
teams need to
take warm-up
fixtures more
seriously.
While it
would be
foolish to
read too much
into performances in
these

outs, they could indeed help players
struggling for form to get into the
groove. Once the tournament gets
underway, the players would be under pressure to do well straightaway
though the format does allow the participating sides the luxury of bouncing
back even after a slow start.
For India, the defending champs, who
open their campaign in a high-voltage
clash against Pakistan on Sunday,
the two practice fixtures should have
served as pointers to a possible starting
XI and who slots in where.

which has seen them notch up no

match, things

SYDNEY:
Legendary Pakistan paceman
Wasim Akram believes dashing
batsmen AB de Villiers, Glenn
Maxwell and David Warner will
dominate the World Cup during its
marathon six weeks.
‘I am sure Maxwell, Warner and
de Villiers will ignite this World
Cup,’ Wasim said. ‘These three
players have the firepower to take
the game away in a blaze and it
would be hugely exciting for the
crowds to watch them.’
de Villiers hit the fastest one-day
hundred off just 31 balls against
the West Indies, barely a month
out from the World Cup and will
be key to South Africa landing their
first title.

Wasim
said any bowler would dread
bowling at these batsmen. ‘It will
be a big challenge for the bowlers,’
said Akram. ‘I would always go for
taking their wickets rather than
trying to contain them because
if they stay longer they will pose
trouble for you.’ ‘Pitch the ball, let
it get swing and get them out is
my advice.’
Wasim said on current form
Australia, New Zealand and South
Africa are the teams to beat.
‘For me Australia, New Zealand
and South Africa are the top favourites as they have been playing
consistent cricket for the last few
months and the co-hosts have
the advantage of playing in their
familiar conditions which for me is
a big advantage.’
He said the format of the World
Cup will allow teams to recover. ‘I
think results of the warm-up games
will count for nothing,’ said Akram.
‘The format of this World Cup is so
good that it allows a team to stage
a come back even if they lose the
first one or two games and from the
quarter-finals onwards it will depend
on
o
n how you play on the day.’

Clarke to

SYDNEY:
Australia captain Michael
Clarke was Thursday ruled
out of his country’s World
Cup opener against old rivals England after battling to
shake off fully his hamstring
problems.
Coach Darren Lehmann confirmed that Clarke would
not play at the Melbourne
Cricket Ground on Saturday
but should feature in Australia’s second game against
Bangladesh in Brisbane on 21
February.
‘He’s not playing Saturday,’
said Lehmann. ‘We’re really
happy with his progress. We’re
going to stick with the plan
and he`s going to play against
Bangladesh.’
Clarke, 33, top scored with 64
opening the batting in Wednesday’s 188-run warm-up win
over the United Arab Emirates
in Melbourne where he also
bowled two overs.
He was captaining Australia
for the first time since his
hamstring surgery almost two
months ago. ‘He’s very keen to
play against England,’ added
Lehmann.
‘We had a chat. We’re making
sure he’s 100 per cent ready to
go for Bangladesh. We’re really
comfortable with the decision.’
