According to one of the trainers, who
have come from the United Kingdom,
safety is their top most priority. “We
have to ensure the safety of the vehicle,
passengers as well as the driver. The
safety of the driver is also very important
as he is the one who controls the vehicle

During the on-road training sessions,
the trainers are not only using the new

This waterless carwash uses

surface contaminants and
leaves the vehicle absolutely
spotless. Instead of water,
some chemicals are used to
clean the vehicle. The formula
used to produce the chemicals
lifts the dirt away from the
vehicle’s paint and ensures
that the wash is scratch-free.
In the meantime, it eliminates
unwanted substances. The
biggest advantage is, it saves a
lot of water.
“The eco car wash system
does not require water or soap.
Therefore, there is no mess
around the vehicle. The vehicle
can be cleaned anywhere. You
need not take your vehicle
anywhere to wash your car,”
said Attwood. Currently he is

his BMW 100RR and Honda

for racing purposes, is washed

through conventional ways
as it does not require much

South African national
Kenny Pastellides has been
using the eco car wash
system for two years. He
was also introduced to this
system by one of his friends
in the Kingdom. After that,
he has never used any other
methods to wash his bike,
BMW- R1200GS Adventure.
“It removes all grease and
oil components from the
vehicle. Moreover, it protects
the metal of the vehicle,” said
Pastellides.
According to N.V. Santhosh,
who heads the eco wash
company called, ‘Ecowash
Bahrain,’ run by MASY
Holding in the Kingdom, the
water wash leaves stains on
the surface of the vehicle. But
the eco wash system ensures
that the vehicle is free of any
stains. Currently they have
three mobile eco wash cars
with six people dedicated to
this work.
The owners of high-end
vehicles are their major
customers. They have even
cleaned training flights
and executive buses in the
Kingdom using this method.
According to him, the ecofriendly chemical used by them
was developed in Australia.
“The concept was materialised
using liquid polymer nanotechnology about a decade
ago, added Santhosh.

Readers’ VIEW
This is a make-or-break moment for Ukraine
Angus Roxburgh
Vladimir Putin and Petro
Poroshenko could scarcely
muster a handshake at the
beginning of the peace talks
in Minsk, and the fact that the
negotiations went on through
the night suggests they both
had to be arm-twisted into
making concessions they
didn’t like. It also means that
the deal they finally reached
is very fragile, hanging by the
slenderest of threads.
The immediate task will be to
establish a lasting ceasefire,
starting on Sunday. The
priority is to put an end to
the awful bloodshed that has
soaked eastern Ukraine for the
past year.
But it is the next part of the
Minsk plan – what Putin
referred to as a “political
settlement” – that will be
trickiest. The west’s ultimate
aim is to secure Ukraine’s
future as an independent
state, its territory whole again
and guaranteed. It would be a
disaster if the current situation
– self-declared “people’s
republics” based around the
-
cities of Donetsk and Luhansk
– were allowed to ossify into a
“frozen conflict”, establishing
de facto a separate rebel-run
state and partitioning Ukraine,
perhaps forever.
But for millions of Russians
now to live safely in the southeastern regions, after so much
bloodshed and fratricide, a
huge effort will be required
on all sides. The people of
Ukraine need Putin to do
all he can to persuade the
rebels that the deal is in their
interests, and for the west to
do nothing that gives Putin an
excuse not to do so.
Ultimately, the prospects
for peace in the region may
depend on how strong
Putin’s hold on the rebels
is. It hasn’t always been as
strong as it might appear on
the surface – they ignored
his plea not to hold a
referendum on independence
in 2014, for example, and their
determination to have their
own state has strengthened
since then.
Putin’s public position has
never been identical to that
of the separatists – he has
consistently said he supports
Ukraine’s territorial integrity,
but wants constitutional
reforms that will guarantee
the rights of Russians living
in the south and east of the
country. That is what the
Minsk agreement provides
for – and the west must put
pressure on Kiev to deliver
quickly on that promise.
The west also needs to
hold Putin to his words,
and to the position he has
signed up to. He must not
be allowed to pretend that
he can’t control the rebels –
he can, after all, easily turn
off the supply of weapons
to them. But realistically he
is unlikely to do that if he
fears that Ukraine, backed
by the west, is preparing to
resume its military offensive
against them. Putin needs to
be encouraged to drop his
military support for the rebels
rather than feeling compelled
to continue it in the face of
a western-armed Ukrainian
offensive.
It is to be hoped, therefore,
that the US will reconsider its
plans to send a battalion of
troops to Ukraine next month
to start training Ukrainian
forces. The situation is far
too fragile, and the stakes
are too high, for such easily
misinterpreted moves. The
same goes for any thoughts
about sending arms, even
defensive ones, to Kiev.
As the International Institute
for Strategic Studies warned
this week, “a decision by
the west to provide arms
to Ukraine could prompt a
rapid escalation of Russian
support
for
separatists
battling government forces
in the east of the country”.
That is why Chancellor Merkel
rushed into action last week,
desperately hoping to achieve
an agreement before the
Americans raise the stakes.
She understands, better it
seems than any other western
leader, that this is a makeor-break moment. If cool
thinking does not prevail, on
all sides, the consequences for
Europe could be cataclysmic.

Dear Sir,
Would the world take seriously a
US or UK administration that had
active mob leaders in the cabinet?
Putin does. You can’t turn a blind
eye toward that and then yell
about hybrid warfare in Ukraine.
It’s the same thing. It was Western
greed and lust for their new over
the top capitalism that led any to
think that was a good policy. Those
greedy interests sowed the wind
and now we’re all going to reap
the whirlwind.Frankly, I hope we
have an all out nuclear exchange.

A disinterested outlook needed in killings of innocents
Dear Sir
A couple of days back three
young innocent Muslims,
Deah Barakat (aged 23), his
wife Yusor Barakat (aged
21) and her sister Razan
Muhammad (aged 19) were
shot in cold blood at their
residence in Chapel Hill,
North Carolina, USA by a 46
year old Caucasian man with
a history of Islamophobia.
The newlyweds and Razan
were involved in community
and social initiatives and just
days before the massacre,
Deah was seen conducting
free dental checkups for the
people. The unwarranted
killings of these noble souls
have sent shockwaves across
the world and every rightminded person is aggrieved
by this dastardly act.
However, the mainstream
media is silent on this entire
issue. While FOX News and
CNN were quick to label
the recent Paris attackers
as terrorists, this ‘white’
attacker was not considered
worthy of such a tag. The
First Lady of USA is not seen
crying over these souls like
she was when some kids
were abducted by an African
group nor have world
leaders expressed anguish
at this massacre, let alone a
joint rally condemning the
murders like we saw some
weeks back in Paris.
While we squarely condemn
all extremist and unjust
activities in the same breath,
such racial and religious
prejudices are uncalled for.
This conspicuous silence by
world leaders and media
houses only serves to
indicate their tacit support
and encouragement to such
Islamophobes and sends
out wrong, and indeed
dangerous, signals. Every
drop of blood is sacrosanctbe it of a white, a black, a
Christian, a Hindu, a Jew, a
Buddhist or a Muslim. Every
human being should be
treated with equal dignity
and every criminal should be
treated with equal contempt.
All the more, these killings in
the name of religion should
stop. The authorities should
be more vigilant and ought
to crack down on all such
anti-social elements so that
similar hate crimes are not
committed henceforth. At
the same time, the citizens
should be educated and
sensitized about Islam and
its universal message of
peace, hope and justice so
that a sense of security and
civilization prevails in this
world.

FREED FROM JAIL
Retrial pending
Cairo
Haitham el-Tabei
A
n Egyptian court ordered the release
of two jailed Al-Jazeera journalists
Thursday pending retrial, after they spent
more than 400 days in prison in a case that
sparked worldwide outrage.
Mohamed Fahmy, who is Canadian and
whose family hoped he would be deported,
must pay 250,000 Egyptian pounds
($33,000) bail. His colleague, Egyptian
Baher Mohamed, was freed without having
to pay bail.
The two must appear in court again
on February 23. Fahmy and Mohamed
entered the packed courtroom in white
prison uniforms, after Australian colleague
Peter Greste was deported home earlier
this month.
The three were accused of supporting
the blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood and
originally jailed for between seven and 10
years each.

on Thursday. (AFP)
Greste congratulated his two colleagues
after their release was announced.
“This is a huge step forward. Not time
to declare it over, but at least you get to go
home!” the Australian wrote on Twitter.
A message posted on Mohamed’s
Twitter feed simply said: “I AM FREE”.
Heather Allan, head of newsgathering
at Al-Jazeera English, said: “We are very
grateful. This is a great, great day for us
and we just hope that... the whole thing is
thrown out.”
Fahmy’s fiancee Marwa Omara tearfully
hugged those around her as the pair’s
release was announced while his mother,
Wafaa Bassiouny, said her happiness will
only be complete when he is acquitted.
Bassiouny also voiced concern about
raising the bail. “It is a huge amount, we
will do miracles to find it”.
Baher Mohamed’s wife, Jihan Rashid,
also broke out in tears. “Half of the
nightmare is over. Now I am waiting for
his acquittal.” Canada welcomed Fahmy’s
release but denounced the retrial.
“The prospect of Mr Fahmy standing
retrial is unacceptable,” said Canadian
Consular Affairs Minister Lynee Yelich.
Fahmy had renounced his Egyptian
citizenship to benefit from a law that allows
the deportation of foreign defendants and
which led to Greste’s release. (AFP)

Istanbul
urkey’s former president
Abdullah Gul on Thursday
vigorously defended his
conduct after coming under
heavy fire in pro-government
media for staying on in an
official presidential residence
half a year after leaving office.
Gul, who handed over the
presidency to his long time ally
Recep Tayyip Erdogan after
August elections, is still living
in the luxurious Huber Kosku
(Huber Mansion) above the
shores of the Bosphorus in the
Istanbul suburb of Tarabya.
The controversy follows
speculation
Gul
had
T
acrimoniously fallen out with
Erdogan and conservative
figures in the ruling Justice
and Development Party
(AKP), who blocked him from
rejoining the government
after leaving the presidency.
In a rare statement on his
personal website, Gul said
he had to carry on living in
the presidential mansion
due “to a delay related to
the construction” of his new
residence.
He said it was Erdogan’s
suggestion that he stayed on in
the mansion, which has been
used as the Istanbul residence
of the Turkish president since
the 1980s.
Gul said he will leave the
presidential
compound
once his new private
residence is completed and
was meeting “all expenses
related to this force majeure
accommodation”.
There has been considerable
debate over the future political
intentions of Gul, who in
recent years has drawn his
distance from the increasingly
hardline Erdogan.

he Dreamliner, or Boeing 787, uses 20 percent less fuel per
mile than Boeing 767.
Airbus A350 produces 90 percent less noise than what a
similar plane would have done 50 years ago; it is even below
the noise standards prescribed by International Civil Aviation
Organization.
Thanks to improved aerodynamics and the use of lightweight
composite materials, planes are becoming more fuel efficient.
And thanks to newer noise-reduction technologies in engines,
noise-pollution is declining.
However, on the flip side, air traffic worldwide is increasing
so rapidly that global carbon dioxide emissions from aviation,
which now represent just 2 to 3 percent of all CO2 pollution,
could jump as high as 500 percent by 2050, according to some
forecasts. And that is alarming.
From a global population of just 3 billion in 1960, to a
projected 9 billion by 2050, it will be a three-fold rise in the
number of human beings. In only one generation! And that is
alarming.
What are the nations doing about it? Are the world’s resources
enough? What about Food Security? Waste Management?
Environmental Equilibrium? And, are these the only challenges
ahead?
These were among the many topics I got to hear about at
the 2nd Bahrain International Corporate Social Responsibility
Conference held this week.
Not just in the aviation industry I mentioned earlier, but
in a whole range of industries including oil, construction,
petrochemicals, automobile and electronics, the key focus
of governments, businesses and individuals must now be on
‘sustainable development.’ That was the key-message from all
speakers.
The famous Brundtland Report defines “Sustainable
Development” as the “development that meets the needs of the
present without compromising the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs”.
In the past, organizations took pride in their contributions
to society through some financial donations, and some passive
involvement in medical, educational, entertainment and sporting
activities. They called it their corporate social responsibility.
But now, they must focus on wider environment concerns,
by strategizing all their operations with the aim of long-term
sustainability.
One of the serious concerns affecting sustainability is the
rapid growth of Electronic Waste.
My colleague and I presented a paper at this conference titled
‘Consumer Behaviour in E-Waste Disposal - A Case for Setting
up an E-Waste Collection and Recycling Facility in Bahrain.
We presented our findings from a survey of 200 households
in Bahrain, and showed how Electronic waste is accumulating in
our homes, with no proper disposal systems available.
And we recommended the setting up of an e-waste collection
center that can collect and recycle part of the waste; and send a
part of it outside Bahrain to e-waste treatment facilities.
Of course, it must be shipped in accordance with the UNEP
(United Nations Environmental Programme) Basel Convention
guidelines given for transboundary movements of e-waste.
I found it interesting to note that annual reports of
organizations must now, not only include CSR or sustainability
work, but they must follow ‘sustainability reporting’ guidelines
of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).
Also, GRI’s G4 guidelines – the latest – require most
organizations to make up-to-date disclosures on governance,
ethics and integrity, supply chain, anti-corruption and green
house gas emissions.
In keeping with the global shift in perspectives, I felt that the
organizers should have called it a conference on ‘Sustainability’
instead of on ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’. Somehow, CSR
sounds very old now.

o you usually feel sleepy in the afternoon and don’t mind
taking a short nap even if you are at work? There’s one
more reason for you to do so. Scientists at the Paris Descartes
University in France, have now revealed that cat nap of even
half an hour can help relieve stress and strengthen the immune
system which has been weakened due to poor sleep as little as
two hours the previous night.
Lack of sleep is recognised as a public health problem and
it contributes to reduced productivity as well as vehicle and
industrial accidents. The study found that napping restores
biomarkers of neuroendocrine and immune health to normal
levels.
The relationship between hormones and sleep in a group of

11 healthy men between the ages 25 and 32 were examined.
After a night of limited sleep, the men had a 2.5-fold increase
in levels of norepinephrine, a hormone and neurotransmitter
involved in the body’s fight-or-flight response to stress.
Norepinephrine increases the body’s heart rate, blood
pressure and blood sugar. Researchers found no change in
norepinephrine levels when the men had napped following a
night of limited sleep. Lack of sleep also affected the levels of
interleukin-6, a protein with antiviral properties, found in the
subjects’ saliva. The levels dropped after a night of restricted
sleep, but remained normal when the subjects were allowed to
nap. The changes suggest naps can be beneficial for the immune
system.

n the matters of the heart, the
brain reigns supreme, it has
been revealed.
A psychologist who studies
love at the Emory University
School of Medicine in Atlanta,
said that brain releases a cocktail
of three chemicals, oxytocin,
dopamine and opiates, which
makes people fall in love.
All of those act together
in the brain’s reward system,
which becomes wired to be
tuned especially to the partner;
the space, the sound, maybe the
smell of the partner.
Oxytocin, not to be confused
with the drug oxycodone, is
sometimes called the “cuddle
hormone,” and is responsible
for the bonding between
mother and baby and between
partners. Dopamine is involved
in exhilaration and excitement,
said the psychologist. Cocaine
and sex both cause the brain to
release dopamine. Opiates cause
feelings of warmth and pleasure.
Heroine and sex both cause the
brain to release opiates.

resentment simmering under that
surface respectability at the school
gates.
Indeed, a fair number of us go
beyond simmering and boil over into
full-blown antipathy and stand-offs.
One survey revealed recently how a
third of parents have fallen out with
each other over their children, the
main reason for arguments being the
chastising of another’s child.
‘Sophie was a nasty child and
I wanted to slap her,’ admits my
friend Alex, an earth-mother type
who dispenses bosomy hugs and
homemade cake to all who cross
her path.
No one would ever suspect her of
harbouring violent feelings towards
a child, yet that’s what happened
when she found out that a 12-yearold friend
had
obtained
her daughter’s password and
impersonated her online.
‘Sophie had always been jealous
of my daughter and caused no end
of trouble. My hatred for her felt
uncomfortable at first, but once I

accepted that it’s OK not to like
every child I stopped feeling guilty
about it.’
The two families had been
close, sharing cosy Sunday lunches
together, but their friendship broke
down over the issue. ‘In that very
English way, nothing was ever
said but we disliked their
child and that affected
our feelings towards the
parents.’
Sally invited ‘nice’

her son remained
slavishly devoted to his
more exciting friend.
Eventually, after two
long years, the boy
was moved to another
class and the friendship
petered out.
‘I had to pretend I was
devastated to the other boy’s
mum, but inside I was insanely
happy they’d been split up.’
The violence of my emotions
shocked me. How could I, a
university-educated, middle-aged
mother, feel such antipathy for a
seven-year old? I felt terribly guilty.
What sort of monster hates a child?

Pak’s Gwadar, China’s Zhuhai declared twin cities
Islamabad
akistan and Chinese officials
signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) declaring
Gwadar (Pakistan) and Zhuhai
(China) as twin cities, a media
report said Thursday.
Gwadar is the capital of
Balochistan province in Pakistan
and Zhuhai is a prefecturelevel city in China’s Guangdong
province.
Zhuhai vice-mayor Wang Qingl
P
Li, Zhuhai port authority director
general Hauang Wen Zhong,
Gwadar district council chairman
Babu Gulab and Gwadar port
authority head Dostain Jamaldini
put their signatures on the
MoU at a ceremony in Gwadar
Wednesday, Dawn reported.
Briefing the Chinese delegation
on Gwadar, Gulab and Jamaldini
said the city had a small population
of 6,000 in 1903, which increased
to 45,021 - according to the 1998
national census - and now stood
at 85,000.
Under the Gwadar Master Plan,
they said, several development
projects were being executed in
the city, including those involving
hospitals, schools, roads and a
dam.
Jamaldini said the board
of revenue and the board of
investment were also working on
a plan to declare Gwadar a tax-free
zone.
Under the plan, investment in
power, water and infrastructure
projects to be executed within
a 30km radius of Gwadar port
would be exempted from tax.
The amenity would also
be applicable to products
manufactured in the Gwadar
industrial zone.
Later, the 13-member Chinese
delegation visited Gwadar’s free
trade zone, its hospital and other
projects.

Myanmar revokes Rohingya Muslims’ right to vote

A Tokyo district announced on Thursday that it plans to issue
“partnership” certificates to gay couples, becoming the first
Japanese municipality to recognise same sex units. The Shibuya

India’s Modi ‘appalled’ by temple in his honour

leader was due to open on
Sunday.
But they decided to
rededicate the temple to
“Mother India” after the prime
minister strongly criticised the
plan, saying it went against the
country’s traditions.
“We had built the temple to
express our love and faith in
Modiji,” said project organiser
Ramesh Udhad, using an
Indian honorific to describe
the prime minister. “But if he
is unhappy or hurt by our
gesture, we will remove his
statue.”
Udhad said Sunday’s
opening ceremony had been
cancelled and the statue
of Modi is covered with a
tarpaulin.

Unity day

Naypyidaw
yanmar’s government
on Thursday held a
somber ceremony marking the
nation’s symbolic unification
after the colonial era, but a
coveted ceasefire with ethnic
rebel groups remained out of
reach as conflict sweeps across
northern borderlands.
The quasi-civilian regime
says peace in the ethnically
diverse but conflict-prone
nation is pivotal to the success
of reforms and Myanmar’s
development.
It had hoped to reach a
breakthrough in the protracted
negotiations in time for the
Union Day celebration.
But hours of talks Thursday
between President Thein Sein
and around a dozen ethnic
minority armed groups in the
capital Naypyidaw produced
only a lacklustre commitment
to work towards peace that
was signed by just four rebel
groups.
“Building such temples is
not what our culture teaches
us,” Modi tweeted earlier on
Thursday.
“I was appalled. This is
shocking and against India’s
great traditions,” he said,
urging supporters instead to
focus their energies on his
flagship campaign to clean up
India.

Oscars 2015: Who will be the Best Actor?
W
ith the names
Julianne Moore,
JK Simmons
and Patricia Arquette all but
engraved on the other three
trophies, best actor serves up
the last vestige of suspense in
the acting Oscar races with
contenders vying for half that
number of slots.
Some wags suggest that
Foxcatcher’s nominations for
best actor and best makeup
should have been granted in
tandem: for many, the chief
memory of Steve Carell’s
brittle, spookily funny turn
as psychotic multi-millionaire and self-styled wrestling
coach John du Pont will
be of the prosthetic hooter
adorning the sitcom star’s
face.
Benedict Cumberbatch
was regarded as the best actor
frontrunner when The Imita-
tion Game was riding high on
its Toronto festival triumph
last year. Now, despite the
Alan Turing biopic’s popularity and the internet’s ongoing
Cumberbatch mania, he’s very
much on the “happy to be
nominated” bench.
Certainly not relative to
Eddie Redmayne, who has
already emerged victorious
in the British biopic duel.
His inhabitation of Stephen
Hawking in The Theory of Everything is both touching and
impressively fastidious, but
it could also have been conceived in some kind of Oscar
frontrunner laboratory. Every
box is ticked: playing a famous, noble household name,
mastering the tricky physical
and verbal tics of a disability,
ageing and transforming
considerably on screen, while
remaining consistently affable
and attractive off it.
Many pundits were
predicting Michael Keaton
to emerge victorious, thereby
landing Birdman it’s one
major trophy. As he’s playing
the only fictional figure in the
field, the character of Riggan
Thomson — an insecure, success-starved actor just trying
to stay in the game — might
be the one that Academy
members recognise.
And finally, it’s all but
impossible to say how wellplaced Bradley Cooper is in
this race, since American
Sniper’s late-surging campaign kept him out of the
precursors: he may not have
won at the Baftas, the SAGs
or the Globes, but crucially,
he didn’t lose at them either.
Cooper’s muscular, psychologically shaded performance is no mere coat-tailer:
as morally conflicted sharpshooter Chris Kyle, he’s a
driving factor behind the
film’s success.
Hey, where’s... Ralph
Fiennes? The Academy was
sufficiently delighted by The
Grand Budapest Hotel to
reward it with a co-leading
nine nominations, yet passed
over the man who makes it
sing: Fiennes’ witty, subtly
mournful performance is the
essential human centre of Wes
Anderson’s quasi-historical
romp. Without him, it’d all be
just beautifully-shaped pastry.

This chicken dinner party dish is great to make in
advance of people coming over.
IngredIents:
For the chicken
2 tbsp olive oil
4 whole chicken legs (drumstick and thigh separated)
225g/8oz chorizo, diced
6 shallots, peeled, finely chopped
2 tbsp plain flour
600ml/1 pint dry cider
150ml/¼ pint chicken stock
1 heaped tbsp Dijon mustard
salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 tbsp double cream
For the celeriac mash
1 celeriac, peeled, chopped
squeeze fresh lemon juice
25g/1oz butter
1-2 tbsp single cream
salt and freshly ground white pepper
steamed green beans, to serve
PrePArAtIOn
For the chicken, preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5.
Heat the oil in a large ovenproof frying pan and add all
the chicken pieces to the pan. Cook for 10-12 minutes
turning frequently until evenly browned. Remove
with a slotted spoon and set aside.
Add the chorizo and shallots to the pan and fry, stirring
frequently for five minutes, or until softened and the
fat is beginning to run from the chorizo. Sprinkle in
the flour and stir to coat.
Gradually pour in the cider and stock, stirring
continuously until boiling and thickened slightly. Stir
in the mustard, season well with salt and pepper and
return the chicken to the frying pan.
Cover the frying pan with aluminium foil and cook
in the oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the chicken’s
juices run clear when pierced with a skewer.
For the celeriac mash, place the celeriac in a saucepan
and cover with water and a squeeze of lemon juice.
Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, cover and
simmer for about 15 minutes, or until tender.
Drain the celeriac well and tip it back into the pan.
Mash over a low heat with the butter and single
cream. Season with salt and white pepper.
To serve, stir the double cream into the chicken liquor
and serve the chicken and sauce with the celeriac
mash and steamed green beans.

China’s Lin Zhu was forced

Russia’s Daniela Hantuchova also saw off China’s Saisai Zheng

The Russians have so far made a strong showing at Pattaya.
Rodina and Hantuchova will join fellow Russian and two-time
Grand Slam finalist Vera Zvonareva in the third round.
The 30-year-old Zvonareva is on something of a comeback trail,
after injury and poor form saw her drop from a top-ten career high
in 2010 to a current WTA ranking of 189th in the world, 80 places

Ireland’s
Michael Hoey stormed
into the lead with a fiery eightunder-par 64 at the Thailand
Classic in Hua Hin Thursday,
placing himself comfortably
ahead of seasoned veteran
Miguel Angel Jimenez and
India’s Anirban Lahiri.
The 35-year-old five time
European Tour winner shot
eight birdies and a bogeyfree early morning first round
that set a record for the Black
Mountain course.
The show of force put him
one shot ahead of Asian Tour
Order of Merit champion
David Lipsky, Taiwan’s Hung
Chien-yao and Spain’s Carlos
Pigem.
India’s Shiv Kapur ended
day one in fifth place with a
tight 66 while eight players,
including Spaniard Jimenez,
were bunched together on 67.

conditions during the early
morning start helped him

he said, according

“No bogeys, no fives on

The 1992 ICC Cricket World Cup was revolutionary for its use
of floodlights, white balls and fielding restrictions, but it was
also the first time coloured kits made an appearance.

Morgan unconcerned by Aussies’ whip hand
Melbourne
Skipper Eoin Morgan is unfazed about Australia’s apparent oneday dominance over England heading into Saturday’s World Cup
opener in Melbourne. England are the outsiders against the hosts
before an expected 90,000 crowd at the cavernous Melbourne
Cricket Ground on the strength of their poor record of one-dayers
in Australia. England have just two wins from their last 15 ODI
encounters Down Under, but Morgan resolutely talked up his
team’s chances Thursday against the top-ranked Aussies.
Graham Gooch’s men wore baby blue, but don’t let the colour fool you: The team packed quite a punch and finished
runner-up.
Pollard vows to return with vengeance
New Zealand’s side is now a settled one. Most of the side picks

Former West Indies captain

critics against writing off the
Caribbean side’s World Cup
chances just yet.
West Indies, two-time World
Cup champions, have been
given little chance of reclaiming cricket’s biggest prize,
against the backdrop of their
poor run of recent form and
the number eight ranking in
ODI cricket, reports Caribbean

Trinidad
All-rounder Kieron Pollard has vowed to return with a vengeance following his omission from the West Indies team for the
cricket World Cup. The selectors’ decision to exclude Pollard
and his Trinidad and Tobago team-mate Dwayne Bravo from
the squad has been a subject of raging controversy in the
cricketing world, reportsCMC. The 27-year-old Pollard said his
omission from the squad for cricket’s biggest showpiece does
not signal the end of his career.

Melbourne
World Cup-winning captain
Allan Border on Thursday urged
Australia to make the most of
the pressure and expectation
that comes with hosting the
game’s biggest event.
Host nations have a poor record in cricket World
Cups, with India’s victory in 2011 only the second
time in 10 tournaments the host or co-host has
emerged victorious. “Everyone’s talking about playing at home - that it’s a very difficult situation, the
extra pressure and expectation,” Border said.

But the build-up to the event has been squarely
focused on clamping down on some of the game’s darker
arts as well as a harsh spotlight shone on security in
the aftermath of Wednesday’s announcement that an
“imminent” terror attack had been thwarted in Sydney.
“The global security threat is an issue,” admitted
International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive

The ICC have also gone to great lengths to reduce
the threat of corruption -- names of fixers with links
to shadowy, underground betting networks have been
passed onto the two nations’ immigration bodies. (AFP)

Rotterdam
ndy Murray saved five break points
to hold off determined Canadian
Vasek Pospisil 6-3, 7-5 on Thursday
and reach the semi-finals of the ATP
Rotterdam World Tennis event.
The Scottish top seed and 2009
champion will meet in today’s final
four eighth seed Gilles Simon after the
Frenchman needed just 67 minutes for a
6-4, 6-3 defeat of Jeremy Chardy.
Murray stands an overwhelming 12-1
in the series with number 19 Simon.
Murray battled for one and threequarter hours against the 59th-ranked
Pospisil to defeat the Canadian for a
second time.
The second set was filled with
momentum shifts, with ATP number
four Murray saving a set point which
would have taken the contest into a
third.
Murray finally prevailed with a break
of his opponent for 6-5 in the final set,
earning the win in the next game when
Pospisil’s return was ruled wide.
“It was a tough match physically and
mentally,” said Murray, who lost the
Australian Open final to Novak Djokovic
less than a fortnight ago.
“Vasek is a good athlete and gets to a
lot of balls. Thanks to this slow court, I
was able to move him around at the end
and control the points.
“We had some long games and tough
points, it was difficult.”
Murray is wary of playing Simon,
whom he last beat in Acapulco in 2014.

The Czech finally prevailed thanks
to a break midway through the final
set, running out the winner on his first
match point.
Canadian second seed Milos Raonic
and number four Stan Wawrinka were
bidding to join Murray and Berdych
in the quarters.
Raonic was facing Italian Simone
Bolelli while Wawrinka was taking
on Guillermo Garcia-Lopez,
whom he beat last month in
Melbourne.
Simon improved to 3-0
over Chardy after beating his
compatriot at Roland Garros
in 2011 and the Madrid
Masters in 2013.
Simon, holder of 11 career
titles, finished his modest
effort with nine winners
and broke Chardy twice in
the second set. The winner
never faced a break point.
Simon finished off with
a backhand pass to set up
a match point, then fired
a duplicate shot down
the line a point later to
claim his fifth win of the
season.

in Rotterdam for the

his 10th match at the
event. (AFP)
