This First Sunday of Lent begins with the
Covenant between God and the entire world
with all its living creatures. Next week we
focus on the Covenant with a particular
group of people who became known as the
Chosen People – the Covenant made with
Abraham. On the following week, we hear
of the Covenant of the Law made with
Moses at Horeb (Mt Sinai) – the chosen
people were called to respond to their
choice of God through living in a moral way.
The Fourth Sunday describes the rebuilding
of the Temple by Cyrus, King of Persia after
its destruction by the Babylonians. On the
Fifth Sunday (the week before Passion
Sunday), we hear from Jeremiah the
promise of a new Covenant, a personal
covenant between God and people, written
in their hearts.
Today’s section of the Book of Genesis is a
much misunderstood text. The story of
Noah and the Flood is NOT the account of
God’s anger and punishment of sinful
people. This perspective is the human
attitude. Whenever natural disasters occur
the frequent question is “Why did God let
this happen?” We tend to blame God for the
floods and earthquakes and fires. Let us
listen to God’s point of view: “God said,
‘here is the sign of the Covenant I make
myself and you and every living creature for
all generations: I will set my bow in the
clouds and it shall be a sign of the Covenant
between me and the earth …. And so the
waters shall never again become a flood to
destroy all things of flesh.”

Telling the Lenten Scriptures with Joy
You are invited to take some time to prepare
yourself for Lent and nurture your spirit. Come
along to St Monica’s Parish hall from 7-9pm
this Tuesday 24th February to hear the Lenten
gospels told by Biblical Storytellers. This will
also be a time for quiet reflection, prayer and
conversation. Please add your name to the list
at the back of the church as we need to know
numbers for photocopies. For more information contact Rina Wintour 0400332120.
