News Page 6 Issue 19 Winter Fest and Chili CookOff Saturday February 28, 2015 10:00 am to 4:00 pm The purpose of this event is two-fold. 1) raise funds while introducing the general public to our Club 2) a different, fun event for Club members to participate in Clubhouse opens at 10:00 am FREE Ice fishing and outdoor activities until 2:00 pm Chili Challenge runs from 2pm to 4pm with Awards Ceremony at 4:30pm. WSSC Club Members are invited to cook up a pot of their “best” chili and enter it into a “Chili Challenge”. Cost will be $5.00 per person over the age of 12 years OR $15.00 per family. Guests will each receive a one of a kind WSSC Chili Festival mug (as supplies last) to be used as their own personal chili bowl for the day. The guests will use their mug to taste all or any of the Chili that is served. Buns and butter will also be included. The guests get to keep their mug as a souvenir. W.S.S.C. News Issue 19 Page 7 Each guest will receive a ballot so that they may vote on the “People’s Choice” chili – whichever chili is their personal favourite. A secret panel of judges will judge each entry on the following categories: 1) Spiciest 2) Most Colourful 3) Most Original 4) Best Overall The judges will use a set of five specific criteria: 1) Color – Does the chili look appealing? Does it look bright and colourful or dull and bland? 2) Aroma – Does it smell good? Does the aroma make you want to dig in? 3) Consistency – How is the meat-to-sauce ratio? Is it runny? Mushy? Too thick? 4) Taste – How is the flavour? Do the ingredients blend well, or is one overpowering? Does the first bite make you want another one? 5) Aftertaste – Once you swallow, is there a spicy taste (bite) that stays on your tongue? Is it pleasant? At 4pm the ballots will be tabulated and the winners will be announced about 4:30pm. There are FIVE Winning Categories in the WSSC Chili Challenge: People’s Choice, Spiciest, Most Colourful, Most Original and Best Overall Chili Challenge Rules: o All Chili Challenge entrants MUST be a member in good standing with the Wellington Street Sportsmen’s Club as of Feb. 28, 2015 o The Chili Chefs’ identity will remain anonymous until the Awards Ceremony. o Each Chef is asked to provide a creative “Name” for their concoction. (Please remember this is a family oriented event) o Each entry MUST be accompanied by: o An electric crock pot – entries must meet the minimum temperatures for “Safe Food Handling” o An extension cord o A ladle o A list of ingredients. (This information will remain secret but will be used if someone with a food allergy requests to see it.) If you are planning on entering the Chili Challenge or being a “Secret Judge”, you MUST notify Kathy Moore by February 14, 2015. A HUGE Thank you to all who have already expressed their desire to enter their Chili and to those “Secret Judges” who have stepped forward. I am still looking for a couple of judges and a couple of chili entries.
