OUR CAUSE: A STRONGER FARMINGTON VALLEY Each year, our YMCA and YMCAs around the country hold an Annual Campaign to support members of our community who can’t afford to participate in the many life-changing programs offered by the YMCA. At the Farmington Valley YMCA, we pride ourselves on the fact that we do not turn anyone away due to their inability to pay. Below is the story of one of our members whose life has been changed because of the generosity and donations of our donors who believe in our cause. Here’s a question for you: have you ever had the experience of walking up a single flight of stairs on a fair weather day and notice that you’re sweating before you have even reached the top? That’s where my story starts. I was a ten-year smoker and more than 50 pounds overweight. I lived a very sedentary life. Smoke, eat, and sit day in, day out. Yeah, the sweating before I reached the top of the steps thing? Not a big surprise. People say they have their “aha” moments. For me, that one trip up the stairs made me think “Duh! Why am I doing this to myself?” So I joined the Y. In 8 months, I have lost over 50 pounds. I’ve gone from a size 40 to a 34! The staff at the Y is very accessible and wants to help. Whether it’s Emily making it a point to see me and tell me what a great job I’m doing or Eugenia stopping me as I pass by the front desk to check in – even once printing out the picture they took of me when I joined to show how far I’ve come (yeah, you can burn that now)— everyone here has been very kind and supportive. I am forever grateful to the Y for allowing me to access the tools and support I have needed to become a healthier individual. I am also grateful that the Y has a program for those who cannot afford the full membership rate to become members at a lower rate. This year, I opted to voluntarily increase my membership each month. I realize my small increase isn't much, but if it helps, even in a small way, give the Y a chance to let someone else have the same opportunities I have had, it is certainly worth it. Derek C Winter Session 1: January 5 - February 22 Winter Session 2: February 23 - April 12 Hustle In and Get Warmed Up with our Winter Programs! So, when a volunteer contacts you this year for a donation to our 2015 Annual Campaign, think about Derek and know that you are more than a member of our Y, you a part of changing lives! HEALTH & WELLNESS GYMNASTICS WINTER SESSION ONE January 5 - February 22, 2015 WINTER SESSION TWO February 23 - April 12, 2015 WINTER SESSION programs make this an UNFORGETTABLE SUMMER! join us this summer at... YMCA Camp Chase & Camp Farmington Valley On average, kids lose 2 ½ months of reading and math skills over the summer. At the Y, we know we can make a difference in preventing summer learning loss. Kids who attend camp over the summer do not experience that same degree of learning loss, and in many cases, make gains. One approach takes kids through theme weeks during which kids lead activities and discuss how to solve problems. Then they design a pathway to get the results they want. Think of it as driving a car… the staff is in control of the gas and brakes but the kids are steering down the road. They are in control of where we go.
