RANGIKURA SCHOOL’S ‘TAMAITI MUA’ INITIATIVE.
‘Tamaiti Mua’ is a project that started nearly five years ago with the aim of creating more community
engagement at Rangikura. Mr. Norm Hewitt was brought in to help facilitate and guide us through
establishing this as a culture in our school. The goal is, “Total collaboration and collective
ownership of the education and well-being of our students.”
This has since become our school vision; built on forming & strengthening partnerships & relationships
between staff, students and community, underpinned by the value of RESPECT (For self, others,
environment).
The name ‘Tamaiti Mua’ was invented by ex-student Evelyn Ierome five years ago when we were in
the planning stage. It is a derivative of Polynesian and Maori language and loosely means, “Children at
the front” or “Children First!”
As a staff: we base all our decisions, our own expectations and our standards on putting our students
first. We understand the importance of our three way partnership and through school will ensure these
are strengthened through open and regular communication between us.
Our students: from day one will know what is expected of them in this partnership. Their work ethic,
their behaviour, their own standards are all set and regularly reflected on to ensure they are working
hard to achieve the TM goal/our Vision. Their reflections of how they think they are going are to be
shared with you at home too.
Our parents & community: as always, we need your firm support from home to ensure our students
are receiving the same messages and expectations of standards as school. This is in terms of
homework, healthy lunches, getting to school on time and communication between us.
We will also be calling on you for support with school trips, coaching, transport, payment of fees,
popping in to help out if you have some free time - sharing your expertise in any field of learning.
Under TM, our school is always open to you (all you need to do is sign in at the office).
This three way partnership goal only succeeds if all parties do their part to ensure we provide the best
education and that the kids are happy and safe at home and school.
If you would like a more in depth chat about the history and future journey of ‘Tamaiti Mua’ feel free to
make a time to come see me for a cuppa tea!
SCHOOL STATIONERY.
We are coming to the end of week three and there are still students without stationery. Mrs. Jones will
be contacting parents of these students. If you need to arrange payments with me, that is not a
problem. Make an appointment to come see me and we can work something out. Please parents our
students need to start in their books so as not to hinder their learning.
