VOLUNTEER READING Dear Parents We are planning to expand the current reading program to offer further reading opportunities to students who require additional support in literacy. These reading sessions would be supplementary to the usual class literacy program. To implement this, we would appreciate offers from parents, grandparents or other community members who can make a commitment to a regular time and day that would be conven ient to them to be a Reading Tutor. We hope you will consider participating in this program as a Volunteer Reading Tutor. Training will be provided by Michiko de Solom and Jennifer Slade (Learnin g and Support Teachers) on Wednesday 4 March from 9.30am – 10.15am in the new Learning Support classroom (next to 2S - at the end of B Block). Even if you will not be volunteering as a tutor you are welcome to be part of this information session as it will give you the opportunity to become more familiar with the reading process and acquire strategies to help your child. Please indicate below if you will be attending the session and whether you are able to volunteer to be a Reading Tutor. Thank you for your support with this valuable program. A new group of children will have an opportunity to join Garden Club each term. Our new group of keen gardeners for Term 1 P & C News P & C Parent Survey Results Thank you to everyone who took the time to fill in our parent survey late last year – 186 surveys were completed, which is a great response. The results have helped to identify those areas that parents would like the P&C to focus on, and provided good feedback on how the P&C can improve its effectiveness and communication. Some key messages in the survey were: • • • • Key areas of focus for the P&C should be continued educational support (teachers and materials) for the school, providing creative and varied play areas, and fixing the oval. The school has a fantastic volunteer support base, with the significant majority of respondents either already volunteering, or able to volunteer their time in support of the school. People would like the P&C to consult more on spending decisions, and communicate more about future fundraising goals. The P&C needs to be more welcoming to new parents and ideas, and broaden the volunteer community. You can see a more detailed summary of the survey results on the P&C website at http://www.lcwps.com.au/ . Some changes and actions are already underway in response to suggestions made in the survey, such as: • A new play area, and a fix for the oval, are being investigated and will be discussed at the next P&C meeting on Wednesday 25 February. • • • A new Volunteer Coordinator role has been added to the P&C Executive, to help better communicate volunteer opportunities and help people get involved (for example, by volunteering as part of a team rather than taking sole responsibility). Year 1 parents and the P&C hosted a drinks night for Kindy parents to welcome them into our school community, with a great turnout on the night. P&C meetings this year will be held on Wednesday evenings, as many found the daytime meetings difficult to attend. We hope to see you at the next general P&C meeting on Wednesday 25 February, for more discussion about the goals of the P&C in 2015. Special thanks to Tami Bradley (Eldridge) for initiating the survey and collating the results.
