Who are the Community Cooks?
How much does it cost to be a
Community Cook?
Community Cooks are volunteers who are
passionate about supporting others to
improve their cooking skills to prepare
cheap, healthy and tasty meals.
They are:
* Enthusiastic about cooking meals with
simple ingredients and techniques.
* Willing to prepare and taste different
types of foods.
* Positive about healthy eating and
promoting good nutrition.
* Committed to working with people from
their local communities.
* Patient and able to encourage others
who have very little cooking experience.
* Able to offer the time to attend training
and then to deliver cooking courses.
What do the Community Cooks do?
After the training, the Community Cooks
deliver the CHEW Cook Healthy Eat Well
course. This is a five week basic cookery
skills course (about 3 hours each week)
involving practical experience in the
kitchen for small groups of 3-8 people.
When delivering the CHEW course,
the Community Cooks will prepare the
session plan, buy the ingredients for the
recipes, and run the session at a local
risk-assessed venue with an appropriate
kitchen. The Community Cooks will provide
guidance and support to the participants
on the course as they prepare the food
and eat it together.
Following the completion of the training,
new Community Cooks will be offered
opportunities to shadow CHEW sessions
delivered by Community Nutritionists or
by experienced Community Cooks before
delivering their first CHEW course.
The Community Cooks programme is funded
by NHS Great Yarmouth & Waveney. The
training programme is free to successful
applicants. Community Cooks will be given
access to the appropriate equipment and
resources required to deliver the CHEW
course, and all food and travel expenses
will be reimbursed by Great Yarmouth
Community Trust.
What do we want in return?
Within a year of completion of the course
the Community Cooks will each have run 2
‘CHEW‛ cookery courses in the community.
We will help arrange a venue and the
participants whilst covering all the costs!
You will gain new skills whilst also making
new friends and having fun!
