He said "If I have to remember all of the information about the turns, shoals, streams, sand banks, towns, snags and bends, I'll be stoop shouldered from carrying all that weight in my head." of you who turn out for our dinners before the Wednesday night class. Not only are we making money for the club, but wonderful friendships are being formed. We have to give a lot of thanks to Flo and Bill Tapp for making all the arrangements. Those meals just add to what we are - an extended family. A big Now, I realize that all I had to do was to listen to the caller, hear the beat of the music, relax and enjoy the moment. The calls would eventually stick in my head. I’m sure that if I, Lenny, can learn the calls, then the rest of you can also! As presidents, one of the most rewarding thrills we get is watching the Angels come out and help the class as they sail towards their graduation in June. It is obvious that our Angels are having a whale of a fun time because they are always coming back to join us. We appreciate what everyone does to help the Rail Dusters. “Thank You” to Marilyn & Hy Katlein for exceeding last year’s fundraiser with 67 tickets sold to Damn Yankees. They do such a great job with Glendale Center Theater, that it’s becoming an annual stop on our Club’s voyage. What a diverse group of dancers we have since many have migrated to California from all over the country. We laugh with people from Canada, Brooklyn, Detroit, and even some native Californians. We are very happy to be with so many Marilyn & Len Bloom 1 See you in a square. Presidents, Trail Dusters Wearing of The Green March 14th Dance The closer we get to St Patrick’s Day, the more Irish we all become!! So pull out your green hats, socks, beads, etc and wear a wee bit of the green as you come to our March 14th dance. Our own Arlen Miller will be calling the tips and Milo will be cueing the round dancing. So plan to attend and show your support for our Club caller and teacher and experience easy and smooth dancing! Because we all know that Square Dancers need to eat every couple of hours, we are sure that the kitchen crew for that dance will provide excellent tidbits for your enjoyment – they always do! Plan to come early to assist with greeting our guests and letting them know that we are the friendliest club in town and welcome them to our dances. We cannot guarantee that there will be a rainbow – or a pot of gold – but there will be good friends, good food, good dancing, and whole lot of fun! See flier page 12. Shirley & Collin Brown Publicity Chairs (Roving reporters from Canada) Know Your March 14 Caller Arlen Miller Are you sometimes nervous about attending a dance when you don't know the caller or you have heard he might be too hard? Well, you can come to the Trail Dusters' June 14th dance and feel comfortable dancing with our friend and club teacher, Arlen Miller. Arlen wants everyone at a dance to have a good time and he works very hard to accomplish this For those of you that don’t know his background, he just completed teaching his 63rd beginner’s class, after 30 years of calling. He actually began as a “Rail Duster” himself (although not with us) back in 1984, and by the end of that year he was calling his first tip. Wasn’t Johnny Preston great? He has such a nice, melodious voice. Everyone had a good time dancing to his call. All of us Trail Dusters had a fun time dancing. The great news is that there were 11 squares (88 dancers) and 40 of the dancers were Trail Dusters. This has to be a good sign for the future of our club. We were pleased to see many of our new graduates attend this dance. Born in Detroit, he has lived in Los Angeles most of his life, and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree degrees from Cal State University, Northridge. Come out to our March14th dance and I can promise you that Arlen will call a great dance. Let's give him our club's support! Delicious food was served as Pat Kessler spinchain@sbcglobal.net list of 2015 callers - page 10 colshirl@sbcglobal.net Caren Blumfield cooked up a batch of delectable sandwiches and 2 added cheese and crackers while Jeri Sobel, made an amazing veggie platter. Dessert was still to come- ice cream with a strawberry sauce and a lovely Valentine cake. A big thank you to the Tuckmans, A great big GET WELL wish goes out to Rosalie Rifkin who has just returned home from a 15-day stay at Tarzana Hospital where she was suffering from heart failure. Hubby Bob will continue as her special nurse while Rosalie continues to rest and recover. During this healing time, she welcomes your notes and phone calls. Rosalie, we know that it will be a little while before you are able to resume dancing, but we hope that you will soon be well enough to join us at our events and be part of our Trail Duster “family” again. I’m happy to report that Adrian Fox-Kreisberg is now at home where she continues her recovery from recent back surgery. While dancing is still a ways away from her agenda, she says she is no longer in pain and is doing well. Adrian, we look forward to seeing you back with us – even on the sidelines, and hope you will keep improving each and every day! Maxine and Irwin, for making all the dancers welcome as they came into the hall. And Irwin ended the day by winning the Split the pot. See, being a greeter pays off. I am looking forward to dancing with you all at our next dance, March 14. Your Dance Reporter Bill Dickter bradzdad@gmail.com “Exhausted but thrilled” is how Joni and Mark Simon described their feelings following the arrival of their brand new granddaughter. Born on January 29th (3 weeks early) to the Simons’ son Jason & his wife Runya, little Ruby is the second granddaughter for Joni and Mark. She has a big sister, Brynn, who is 3 years old. To all the family, we wish you much happiness and hope that these children will always be a source of pride and joy. Congratulations! Ilene and Mark Abramson welcomed a new granddaughter on February 3rd. Aria Taylor Abramson, the first child for the 3 Abramson’s son Danny and his wife Andrea, made her entry into the world at UCLA . She is the third granddaughter for Ilene and Mark – whose daughter has two girls, ages 3 ½ and 5 years. Ilene reports that the “older” cousins are very excited to have a new little cousin to “mother!” Warm congratulations to all the family, and may these granddaughters always bring you happiness in the years to come! I’m always happy to hear your news, and I hope that you will remember to contact me, either by phone or e-mail (as shown below) whenever there is “sunshine” or “showers” to report. Remember, too, that I will share with our Club “family” in this column ONLY WHAT YOU GIVE ME YOUR PERMISSION TO PRINT! Hopefully, there will be lots of sunshine in your life – and you will choose to share! I look forward to hearing from you. We attended our annual half-way dance, alias The Student Stomp, sponsored by A square D. Students from all the clubs in our Ventura/San Fernando Valley area attended. There were thirty three (33) squares to hoot and holler with each tip. Five callers split up the afternoon and many harmonized together making the afternoon really fun. Of course some of our Rail Dusters were at the dance, nine of them in fact. As usual, they seemed somewhat dazed with the first tip; they just weren't used to the “speed” of the calls. It takes a while to understand everyone else’s accent and their fast pace. We certainly held our own. There were lots of Trail Dusters to angel them through the tips and the students did a lot better as the afternoon proceeded. get to know each other. We are all looking forward to the Fun Dance on Saturday, March 7 at the Simi Valley Senior Center with Boots and Slippers, where we will once again get to mentor and help our students in a square. Hope many of you will join us! Carol and Richard Lewis glowed in the light of more than thirty Trail Dusters who came out en force to honor them at this special dance. Dancing to the talents of Andy Allemao and Pat Carnathan and the Round Dancing duo of Cinda and Milo Molitoris, our Trail Dusters had the best opportunity to show off their skills and have a thoroughly good time. The Ball was very well attended with a room packed full of dancers and one look at our Dressed in matching Valentine attire, Carol and Richard club's picture shows once again, Trail Dusters know how to have a great time. After working hard putting the Trail Duster side of this danced in an ocean of red hearts and crinolines and paraded around the room to the cheers and applauds of what was surely an explosion of typical Trail Duster support – see picture on page 8. 5 event together, our presidents, Marilyn and Lenny, certainly looked with pride at the outpouring of Trail Dusters support and good wishes for our club's chosen sweethearts. Lynn Ovadia and Maureen Fried built a beautiful Valentine basket that was contributed to the event and was won by a lucky lover of coffees, teas, mugs, chocolates and a plethora of Valentine faire. A big thank you to Lads and Lassies for arranging the bus ride for many of us and providing snacks and games. TheTrail Dusters swept the prizes for the games on the way home. Caren Blumfied won the Valentine crossword puzzle, Sherwin Silver had the most word searches and Ron and Jeri Sobel tied in the "What time will we arrive home" Contest. Maybe we won't be invited back! For those who could make it, the evening was finished with a delicious dinner at the Lamplighter restaurant, with more camaraderie and good cheer in a private room full of tired and hungry dancers. In all, it was a great day, a wonderful dance and welcomed bonding was had by all. BIG BEAR BONANZA The evening won’t end until we close down the Hospitality Room after midnight. Saturday morning, you will wake up to fresh mountain air and a day packed with other activities. You can pick and choose your fun but whatever you choose to do from our lists of events will leave you feeling that “I wish we had more time”. Boat Cruises, visits to the zoo, shopping around town, playing tennis, and hiking are just a few of our adventures that await you. Details will follow. Saturday night will be another blast and many of you will be performing in our “almost Hollywood quality professional play”. Sunday will finish with our installation of new officers, the famous and unequaled Joke-off by Judith Altman and a final good-by destination lunch . "A Mountain High Extravaganza” Ready get set, go! We are going to Big Bear Lake for our famous May Weekend this year. We’re leaving the heat of La Quinta and moving to Big Bear Lake. The Best Western Chateau is awesome and that’s where the fun will begin. We will check into the hotel from 3:00 pm on and prepare for our Happy Hour followed by our Banquet Dinner. Of course, lots of surprises and fun activities will await you for both of these activities (besides eating and drinking) and we guarantee a wonderful time. No square dancing but be sure to wear comfortable dancing shoes! The weekend is very casual so store your New Year’s Eve attire away and get down to basics. Space is limited and we have deadlines to meet for the hotel so please get your deposits in ASAP. Fill out the flier and guarantee yourself and bear-y good time! Congratulations to Mindy & Al Brown Hi Trail Dusters and Rail Dusters, We continue to have very nice large turnouts for our weekly dinners before class every Wed. evening. Those of us who attend have so much fun talking, Laughing, and of course eating. Remember, there's always room for more. We welcome whoever shows up to dine and join in on the fun. As we say each month , this is an excellent source of income for our dance club. The more we spend on our dinners, the larger the checks. We only go to restaurants who agree to be a "fundraiser" meaning they figure out totals spent by us and then mail us a check for a percentage of that amount. The restaurants are very welcoming and give us great service because we're such a sizable group and they love our business. If you need to change with someone, let Lana Collier know - call (818) 889-0565 or email lanacollier2@gmail.com What impresses us the most about A Square D, short for Associated Square Dancers, is its concern about the well being of all the club members. A Square D is the umbrella organization of all the square dance clubs from Santa Barbara to Orange County which includes our club, the Trail Dusters in the San Fernando Valley Lynn and I were honored to chair the last meeting on January 28th. At the last meeting one of the members asked if any other clubs were noticing that dancers were leaving at 10:00 P.M. when the dances were not over until 10:30 P.M.? I, and several other club representatives. answered "yes" to the question. After a discussion of this problem, it was the consensus of the representatives that each club should decide which hours they chose to hold their dances. The attrition problem can be avoided as long as the dances are three hours long and are the same hours advertised in the flyers and club newsletters such as the Dusty Trails, Grapevine, etc. Some of the club representatives recommended that the evening club dances start at 7:00 P.M. and end by 10:00 P.M. The reason for this change of hours was that dancers usually leave before10:00 Our Presidents, Marilyn and Len Bloom, have placed this matter on the agenda for discussion at the next board meeting. Sincerely, Lynn and Joel Ovadia 7 We had a fantastic turnout on Saturday, Feb 21 at our official club visitation at the Valley Trailers in Northridge.
