get you moving for the BIG BAND NIGHT.
Hello,
my name is
michelle renee -
I have been in dance and ballroom for the last 33 years of my life-including as a
dancer, competitor and choreographer. When I was younger, I danced for Disney and
various pop stars. As an adult, I did the choreography for the first two years of Dancing
with the Stars and five years in Britain doing their version of Dancing with the Stars. I
have taught all levels and styles of dance and enjoy teaching my craft to others as a
new form of expression.
I'm looking forward to meeting and teaching ballroom for you in April of this year!

LIFESTYLE UPDATES
By Connie King, Lifestyle Director
The Lifestyle Department is working
on expanding the Del Webb Merchant
program in 2015. We are currently
negotiating relationships with local
businesses and service providers who
will offer savings and discounts to
Solera Diamond Valley residents. We
recently met with representatives from
Mt. San Jacinto College to discuss CoOp Educational programs. The benefit of working with the
local college is that classes can be taught here at the lodge.
The Lifestyle Department is in discussion with the Hemet
Farmers Market to bring fresh produce and other products to
residents once a month. Although we will repeat most of your
favorite social events in 2015 (i.e. Saint Patrick’s Day, Harvest
Fest and more…) we look forward to featuring new and
innovative program ideas.
Thank you for taking time to complete the on-line or paper
survey concerning The View. The results will be presented at the
board meeting along with other options the committee has
reviewed. We will keep you posted!

OLD DAYS OF HEMET
During the 1880’s, south of the current San Jacinto Main Street, north
of Park Hill along Hewitt Street, Henry Hewitt’s 1871 purchase of land from
Francisco Estudillo was proving to be a profitable investment and he was
building an empire. It was the hub of commercial development and provided
substantial dividends for Hewitt.
Success is
always the magnet
for competition and
Old Town, or
Bowers, as it was
known, was no
exception. The Rev.
Griffin D. Compton,
a Methodist minister
and founder of the
city of Compton,
eyed opportunity in
the San Jacinto
Valley and he, along
with partners James
Kerr and Samuel
Oak Prince,
purchased 1,800
acres from Francisco
Estudillo near
Hewitt’s land. With
Compton as President the San Diego Land Association filed the map for
San Jacinto Rancho in San Diego July 31, 1883.
The map had a European city design and was unique in Southern
California with the focal point of the streets forming a 5-point intersection.
The main north-south street was San Jacinto Street and main east-west
street was Central Avenue, which traveled westward and then diagonally
along the riverbed.

Hemet High School c. 1930. At that time located north of Latham
Avenue between Thompson and Santa Fe Streets.
Hemet Used Car Market was located on the north side of 300 block
Florida Avenue in 1926. Owner Jewell Lawrence Bagby had a used car lot
in Modesto before trying his hand at it in Hemet. The family later moved to
Cahuilla Mt where Jewell turned to farming and beekeeping.
MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR
Darlene “Dee” Belles
By Charlene Bowman, Resident
M-I-C – see ya real soon, K-E-Y – why, because we like
you, M-0-U-S-E . . .
How many of us remember this little ditty? Well, Dee
Belles certainly does. She was a dancer with Walt
Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club, in her
younger years. When did it all start?
Dee was born in the 40’s, right here in
So. California’s San Fernando Valley.
Yep, she is a genuine Valley Girl (look
that one up).
When Dee was about four years
old, she came down with Polio. For two
and one-half years, she lived in an iron
lung. She finally got out of this
contraption, but found she couldn’t walk
without support. To help with this situation,
she was enrolled in dance classes. After about
a year of dancing, Dee was able to walk and dance
without braces. She loved to dance and continued for
many years.
Dee danced for several TV shows and other venues
around the area. She danced for Disney, Knott’s Berry Farm,
Hollywood Dancers, Gold Diggers, Hilo Hattie’s, Lawrence Welk,
and USO Homeland (USA) – just to name a few. Oh yes, and Dee
sang and danced with Connie Stevens, too. After a time, Dee
discovered she didn’t really like the Hollywood scene. So, she
began teaching dance, which lasted for several years.
Dee, also attended school to become a professional florist. As
a florist, she decorated events for several celebrities. There was the
John Wayne family, the Ram’s football team and the Frank Sinatra
family ….. just to name a few. She loves to decorate and garden.
Plants, especially flowers, are a special love of hers.
Dee married nearly 50 years ago. She and her
husband, Rich, became foster parents. They
adopted a foster child and had three children
of their own. The Belles’ have 10
grandchildren. Dee loves being involved
with all the kids. All the kids and
grandkids, are fabulous. Everyone has
either graduated college or is attending
school or college. So far, all the
grandkids have earned scholarships.
Dee is definitely a proud grandma.
Dee enjoys traveling. She’s been on
about 15 cruises around the US, Europe,
China and Tahiti. She is very involved with
various cancer groups. (She has experienced bouts
of cancer since 1992, and is currently in treatment.)
Humor has played a major role in Dee’s experience. Ellen
DeGeneres has kept her laughing through all the various
treatments. She loves giving pep talks to people regarding their
battles. Her message to the world is, “Don’t ever give up on life.
Don’t ever quit!” She believes in living life to the fullest and never
fear dying. She lives by the motto, “Pick yourself up, dust yourself
off and walk forward – there’s life out there meant just for you.”
Dee is blessed to be close with 23 of her high school friends,
from Montebello High School. They all graduated together in 1959.
The group just celebrated their 55th high school reunion, last
October. They keep in touch and do a lot of things together….even,
taking a cruise full of great times. While on this cruise, she and her
hubby Rich, renewed wedding vows for their 25th wedding
anniversary. (It runs in the family, as Rich hangs out with his high
school friends, too.)
Dee describes herself
as a very caring and
giving person. She
loves to help others.
Also, she is involved
with many community
activities & events.
Be sure and say,
“Howdy”, when you
cross paths with this
fascinating “Valley
Girl”.

"Sweet Baby Girl"
By Janie Varilone, Resident
Pet Parent: Darylene Schreiber
"Sweet Baby Girl" were the first words uttered as the
breeder handed Tessie, a black, eight-week-old Toy Poodle to
Darylene Schreiber. And that's what she has been called, all
seven pounds of her, for the past 15 years. During this time,
Tessie has provided joy, companionship, and unconditional
love every day for her mom Darylene and Darylene's mom
Betty who lived at Solera until 4 1/2 years ago. Tessie came
into their home and hearts in June of 2000, adjusting
immediately to their
lifestyle, never questioning or
complaining. All she needed was love and a little of their
time. In fact, Tessie has had to adjust to many lifestyle
changes over the past 15 years. She has lived in five different
homes during this time, most recently as late as four months
ago when her owner purchased a second home in Northern
California. " I was really concerned about this change for her
as she is definitely a senior citizen now" her owner says. But
not to worry, she handles the long drive like she's been doing
it her whole life, riding for long hours in her kennel. She
simply curls up, goes to sleep and takes a break when stopping
to eat or get gas.
Another example of her ability to adjust was when Janie
Varilone and her dachshund, Reggie lived with us for four
months while their home here in Solera was being
built. She and Reggie shared dog beds, food and
human attention like they had been raised together.
Tessie is now almost blind, totally deaf, and has
only a few teeth left, but her sense of smell and taste
are still operating at 100%. She never hears or sees
when her mom goes into the kitchen, but she still
shows up almost immediately hoping for a treat or something to
drop on the floor so she can "clean it up..
Even though Tessie is more of a charcoal gray with a white
muzzle these days, she still has a cocky bounce to her step,
especially in the morning after a good night's sleep. When she
barks, all four feet still come up off the floor, and her ears still
stand out wildly with static electricity on a windy, dry day. Yes,
Tessie is still Darylene's "Sweet Baby Girl."

The Four-leaf Clover
The four-leaf clover is an uncommon variation of the common,
three-leafed clover. According to tradition, such leaves bring good
luck to their finders, especially if found accidentally. In addition,
each leaf is believed to represent something: the first is for faith,
the second is for hope, the third is for love, and the fourth is for
luck.
It has been estimated that there are approximately 10,000
three-leaf clovers for every four-leaf clover.
Clovers can have more than four leaves: The most leaves
ever found on a single clover stem (Trifolium repens L.) is 56.
Five-leaf clovers are less commonly found naturally than four-leaf
clovers; however, they, too, have been successfully cultivated.
Some four-leaf clover collectors, particularly in Ireland, regard the
five-leaf clover, known as a rose clover, as a particular prize.
To find a four-leaf clover, one should look in a patch of white
clover (Trifolium repens) or red clover (Trifolium pratense) to find
genuine mutant clovers.
