PHOENIX Rehabilitation Supports Fight Against Texting and Driving
PHOENIX Rehabilitation and Health Services, Inc. (PHOENIX) is distributing red thumb bands to the
community through the month of February in support of the Red Thumb Reminder against texting and driving.
The goal of the Red Thumb Reminder is to make drivers mindful to not text while behind the wheel by
encouraging them to paint their thumb nail red or wear a red band or sting around their finger. PHOENIX
Facility Director and Physical Therapist, Sherron McGowan, PT, M.Ed, OCS recognizes the importance of
spreading the word about the Red Thumb Reminder. McGowan states, “Handing out these red thumb bands is
PHOENIX’s way of provoking thought in the community about the dangers of texting and driving.” Statistics
show that texting while driving causes 1,600,000 accidents per year. Drivers assume they can handle testing
while driving and remain safe, but the numbers don’t lie. Texting while driving is 6 times more likely to cause
an accident than driving intoxicated and is the statistics show that’s about the same as driving after having 4
beers. Texting while driving makes the driver 23x more likely to have an accident and is the same as driving
blindfolded the 5 seconds which at 55 mph would be the length of a football field. Sadly, 11 teen deaths occur
every day due to texting and driving. PHOENIX invites you to stop by their booth at the Chamber Expo at
Sacred Heart Activity Center on Saturday, February 28th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to get your red thumb band and
join the movement of saying no to texting and driving. If you can’t stop by the expo, they will also have bands
available at PHOENIX’s outpatient physical therapy clinic located at 425 Old Kersey Road during regular
business hours, Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. When seeking physical
therapy, consumers have the right to choose their provider. For more information or to schedule an
appointment, call PHOENIX in St. Marys at (814) 834-1190. Established in 1997, PHOENIX is a privately held,
certified rehabilitation agency committed to providing the highest quality of patient-centric care available
today—with more than 50 outpatient rehabilitation locations and six WorkPlace Health (occupational health
services) locations to serve all your needs. Call 888-644-7747 toll-free or visit www.phoenixrehab.com for a
complete listing of PHOENIX locations. Consumers are encouraged to stay connected with PHOENIX via
Twitter (@PHOENIXRehab1), Facebook (PHOENIXRehab), LinkedIn and YouTube.
