Press Release A collection of Bola necklaces
for joyful, urban mothers-to-be
FOR IMMEDIATE COMMUNICATION
FEBRUARY 2015
Ilado was established by two Parisian friends with an eye for design and a curious nature to create
contemporary products for mother and baby. Each collection tells a different story: a motherhood
tradition from around the world is the inspiration for a talented international designer.
The first collection is a modern interpretation of the Bola. Originating from Mexico, this
traditionally spherical pendant contains a silver bead which creates a subtle, harmonious sound
in time with the wearer’s movements.
The Bola was traditionally worn on a long necklace by mothers-to-be, to soothe and
reassure the baby throughout pregnancy. The Bola would then be handed over to the person
looking after the baby, hung from the crib or sewn into baby’s blanket, for a constant reminder
of its mother’s invisible presence through the familiar, soothing sound.

Drawing inspiration from this tradition and calling on the talent of two independent
designers, Ilado’s first collection includes a beaded sautoir necklace by London-based Alice
Cicolini and an elegantly minimalist design by German designer Veronika Gombert: a
perfectly sized, fine-gilded sphere, enhanced with the colours and transparency of resin.
The Bola beautifully highlights a pregnant woman’s curvaceous form and can also be
worn as an accessory for all.The soft chime of this talisman jewellery becomes a symbol of
calm and a reminder of what is essential in our busy, modern world.

Notes to Editors
Originally, Ilado was the name of an African peninsula where the friendship of the
founders, Célia Bonahon and Sandra Zeller began in 1994. Two decades later, they both
became mothers and shared their vision of an urban and joyful motherhood. Inspired by
their many journeys around the globe, the pair decided to explore traditions of mothers
from the world and offer a contemporary insight through the talent of independent young
designers.
Ilado became a window to the world, a brand of discovery for the urban, creative and
colorful but also one that is full of traditional meanings and values. The first collection,
launching February 2015, will be followed by a collection exploring South African
motherhood traditions, including baby blankets by the fashion designer Sindiso Khumalo
and beautiful accessories.
