We hope that each of you has a good time representing your school in this friendly competition. Remember at all times that we are guests of the Grand Wayne Convention Center and that your actions reflect not only upon you but also on your school and the IJCL as a whole. There are a few rules that must be followed: 1. Name tags are required at all times and must be visible (around your neck). They are your admittance to all JCL functions, especially the Roman banquet. This tag contains your student ID number, necessary for all competitions, especially testing. It also contains your pizza choice for the pizza party. Go to the Contest Office in the Board Room with $3.00 to receive a replacement if you lose yours. 2. Attendance is required at all general assemblies and at the candidates’ speeches. Please be sure that you are on time at each session so that the program may continue on schedule. Each chapter delegation is to sit beside or behind the standard/banner provided. (These banners are used by the IJCL at various events through the year and should not be taken.) Please do not place banners you brought over these banners. We invite you to display your school banners on either side of the stage. 3. Bring your program with you to each general assembly. You will need it for the song, creed, and pledge, as well as any schedule changes. 4. Cell phones of delegates, sponsors, and chaperones must be turned off during all general assemblies and during competitions such as testing, creative arts contests, and certamen. 5. Students who drove to convention may not drive their cars during the convention. 6. Anyone who drove a car may park in the parking garage across the street from the hotel. Have your parking pass validated at the hotel desk for free parking. 7. Each person must stay in the assigned hotel room. Each person must be in his/her own room at curfew. 8. All participants in Latin Oratory, English Oratory, Dramatic Interpretation, and Costume Contest must re-confirm their plans to participate in the Harrison Prefunction after General Assembly I. 9. All participants in Sight Latin Reading must re-confirm by signing up for a specific time when they want to participate. 10. If you wish to be rented in the Rent-a-Roman sale today, please complete the online form at www.ijcl.org/rent-a-roman. Participants will be selected from those who sign up. 11. Registration of projects will be in Harrison Prefunction beginning at 1 p.m. You must have your name tag with you when registering. 4 12. Testing will be in part of Convention Hall A. Enter through the Harrison Prefunction. There are two sessions; delegates must take at least two tests in each session. Participants must arrive on time. 13. The Nominations Committee is at 8 p.m. tonight in Anthony Wayne Ballroom A. The one voting delegate listed on the Roll Call sheet must attend. Others are welcome. 14. Please note that the costume contest is tonight; Sight Latin Reading, Dramatic Interpretation, Latin Oratory, and English Oratory are all Saturday afternoon. Check the program for the appropriate locations for check-in. For Sight Latin Reading, please report at the time for which you signed up. 15. Certamen is in three rounds. The first is at 10 tonight. Round II is at 6:30 a.m. Saturday followed by Round III at 7:30 a.m. There is no sequestering. Report to the table in the Anthony Wayne Terrazzo Prefunction five minutes before the time listed. 16. Candidates’ speeches will be at 11:05 tonight in Convention Hall A. All JCL delegates are required to attend. The Candidates’ Open Forum will be a part of General Assembly III. 17. Rent-a-Roman is at 5:00 tonight in Convention Hall A with the pizza party to follow in Anthony Wayne Ballroom B; both are mandatory. 18. Chapter fellowship is at 11:45 tonight and is required. Please check the program for the location of your fellowship. All locations are in the Convention Center or Hilton hotel. All chapters must meet in the assigned spot for at least 5 minutes. 19. Roman attire is required along with your name tag for General Assembly II and the Roman Banquet (Saturday). 20. Seniors are invited to a Social for Seniors in Anthony Wayne Ballroom A at 5:30 today. Get your pizza and head on over. Those who pay the $10 dues (good for four years of membership) may attend the business meeting during General Assembly II. 21. Please have your hotel room ready for cleaning by 10 a.m. Saturday. However, you do not need to check out of the hotel room until after the banquet. At that time, luggage may be stored in the Gallery in the space designated for your chapter. 22. Art projects may not be removed from the Harrison rooms before 7:15 p.m. Saturday. Please be sure to come and get your projects at that time. 23. Remember that we aren’t the only guests in the hotel - no yelling or loud noises. 24. Chapter spirit competitions will be held prior to each general assembly. 25. Please dress in good taste at all times. No stage participants, including candidates and those introducing them, may wear shorts or jeans. 26. Any violation of rules can result in forfeiture of winnings and/or dismissal from the convention. Have a great convention!!! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact one of us. Lisanne Pierson & Jeremy Walker IJCL Co-Chairs 5 Dear IJCL State Convention Delegate, Salve! Welcome to the 62nd Indiana State Convention! This weekend is the keystone to the IJCL year, where your Latin knowledge, artistic and creative talents, and undying enthusiasm for the classics will be put to the test. Literally. A plethora of competitions are available to you at this convention, ranging from the Costume Contest to the Latin Vocabulary Test. With so many opportunities, I suggest you to Carpe Diem (seize the day) by becoming involved in as many activities as possible. I warmly extend the friendly hand of the JCL to you during this amazing weekend. One thing I wanted to address is that the IJCL is not all about winning ribbons and taking home the sweepstakes. It’s about the memories that you will gain through these activities. Activities including a pizza party, Rent-A-Roman, and the return of the famous talent show, “That’s Entertainment,” allow you to relax and enjoy time with friends. The Indiana Junior Classical League is filled with bright, charismatic, and most importantly, passionate people. It is at these moments where I encourage you to speak to the random guy or gal next to you and start new friendships that can last beyond your IJCL experience. If you ever see me or one of my fellow officers, don’t be afraid to stop us and introduce yourself! I promise you that we don’t bite! If you’re still skeptical, I myself can speak for this as I have made some of my best friends at these conventions throughout the past 4 years of my IJCL experience. It is truly a glorious opportunity and I advise you to take advantage of it! Your board members and I have worked hard on this convention in order for you to have an unforgettable experience. Whether it was scrounging the Convention center for placement ideas or debating over food choices for the Roman Banquet, we have dedicated our time to make you comfortable and satisfied. So sharpen those pencils, finish those art pieces, have your registration cards filled out, your voices ready to cheer, and throw on that toga. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you have the time of your life here at the Grand Wayne Convention Center. Cheers to a great convention! Gratias tibi ago. Ex animo, Eric Kim IJCL 1st Vice President 6 Welcome from the Indiana Senior Classical League Salve IJCLer, Welcome to the 2015 Indiana Junior Classical League State Convention! Not only will you learn and do several fun activities, but you will also forge some of the strongest friendships anyone could want.” -Albert Cross III, Bedford North Lawrence High School “Everyone should go to Nationals because it is a special place where everyone who loves Latin - not just kids from Indiana - can come together and celebrate what we love.” -Anna Werkowski, Crown Point High School “The bus ride was very entertaining, filled with so many memories...especially the famous monastery story...It’s life changing.” -Kyle Thompson, Crown Point High School 13 THE ODYSSEY IN SONG Who is Joe Goodkin? Joe has been performing his unique interpretation of The Odyssey for high school and college audiences since 2003. Drawing on his Bachelor's Degree in the Classics from the University of Wisconsin Madison, his extensive experience teaching private music lessons, and his years of writing and performing original rock and acoustic music, Joe has created a 30 minute long composition for solo acoustic guitar and voice, which tells the story of The Odyssey in song, invoking the spirit of the ancient Greek bards who originally brought forth the timeless stories of Odysseus and the heroes of the Trojan War. The Odyssey was honored in 2003, 2004, and 2012 with an American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) Award. The Show The Odyssey consists of 24 short songs sung by Joe Goodkin while playing the acoustic guitar. The performance is continuous and runs around 30 minutes. After the Show After the performance, Joe will be answering any questions you might have had during his performance at his own booth during the 1:45 Bazaar. He will also have some merchandise for purchase. Learn more by visiting Joe’s website: http://www.joesodyssey.com/ Sponsor of the Show Support for the Odyssey in Song performance at this year’s Indiana Junior Classical League State Convention has been graciously provided by the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS) through a Bridge Initiative Grant from their Committee for the Promotion of Latin (CPL). The IJCL is greatly appreciative of their support. The Classical Association of the Middle West and South is an organization for Classics (Latin and Greek) teachers at all levels, undergraduate and graduate students, and anyone else who enjoys learning about the world of classical antiquity.
