So it is unfair to consider them criminals and put them in jails only to be deported to their native lands, say free visa holders. Ahsan, an expat from Pakistan, who had spent almost BD1600 to reach here, said he came here on a free visa, as he had no other choice. He said he did not cross the border to Bahrain; he came on a valid visa issued by the competent authority so the government should understand they are not the culprits - they are the victims. Imtiaz Ali another expat from Pakistan told DT News that he paid BD1200 for a two-year visa. But after six months, the Commercial Registration (CR) of his sponsor got cancelled and since then he became an illegal worker. “Government says don’t pay for visa but we’ve our own compulsions,” he said adding, “We’ve our ground realities which they can’t understand.” “If there are better opportunities in our country, why should we come here, leaving behind our children?” F After paying 400,000 Pakistani Rupees (BD1500 plus) for visa, Tahir Ali anxiously waited for 8 months to reach here. “My salary here is only BD100. I don’t know what to do with this. I’ll warn my children not to commit the same mistake I committed,” he told the DT News. The Kingdom had committed to change the kafala (sponsorship) system in 2009 by the LMRA establishment but things have not changed still. Under the new law, migrants are sponsored by LMRA and can change from one employer to another without employers’ consent. However, in November 2009 Human Rights Watch (HRW) stated “authorities do little to enforce compliance” with “employers who withhold wages and passports from migrant employees accountable, practices (which) are illegal under Bahraini law.” Given to the statement of the then Labour Minister who had likened the system to slavery, the government needs to understand that the kafala system will remain active in one form or other until the authority of issuing visas remains in the hands of employers. Everywhere in the world it is the governments that issue visas. Why not in Bahrain? The sponsorship system practised by GCC nations is considered as the major cause for abuse of poor migrant workers’ rights. The fate of free visa workers is still looming large in the air. There are a plenty of workers whose passports have been confiscated by their employers and are prevented from going to their home countries even after ten or twelve years. There are many among them who could not even attend the funerals of their mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, wives and even children just because their sponsors would not hand over their passports. It is a fact that the expats are the backbone of the Kingdom and even the image of Bahrain without them is dreadful, opine many expat community leaders and social workers. Special Rapporteur on Human Rights of Migrants and the Committee on Migrant Workers has been clear in stating that “Although countries have a sovereign right to determine conditions of entry and stay in their territories, they also have an obligation to respect, protect and fulfil the human “People who purchase ‘free visas” are clearly victims of Trafficking because they are deceived into thinking they can take up employment anywhere once they arrive in Bahrain. This is a miserable and expensive state of affairs for workers to who find themselves in as there is very little they can do once they arrive here. The real criminals who need to be prosecuted, fined and jailed are those selling such visas to poor unsuspecting people, who never fully recover from the huge debts they incur. They should be treated with respect and dignity but again and unfortunately, until the laws are changed they will always be deemed as illegal or undocumented migrants. Some of course do get the opportunity of legalizing their status even after arriving on a free visa and we hope they system can be monitored and regularized that eventually this awful practice will be completely eliminated.” - Marietta Dias Chairperson Migrant Workers Protection Society rights of all individuals under their jurisdiction, regardless of their nationality or origin or immigration status.” Before rushing to a conclusion, it must be remembered there are many on free visas here BAHRAIN ATTENDS GCC MEDIA MEETING Discussions focus on GCC Days to be held in Tokyo Riyadh ahrain took part in the 29th meeting of the foreign media officials in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in the Saudi capital Riyadh. “The meeting was within the coordination and cooperation drive of the GCC countries to help the international community gain greater insights into their achievements, culture and identity,” Maysa Al Thawadi, the Director of Follow Up at the Information Affairs Authority (IAA) said. “The GCC common drive, in line with the GCC media strategy, also includes highlighting political advances and social accomplishments. Wide Angle Joel Indrupati A Memorable Musical W hen the musical that taught us “Do-Re-Mi…” turned 50 this week, there was much celebration in the world of entertainment. Good music, we know, was widely-prevalent in the Hollywood productions of the 50s and 60s, but the success that ‘The Sound of Music’ saw, remains unmatched. Very few movies have made as lasting an impact as this one did. Among the last two generations, I am sure, at some point of their lives, many parents would have beamed with pride – or recall their parents beaming with pride – as they watched their children shyly perform ‘Do-ReMe’ to some living room audiences. We don’t know if Salzburg’s hills are alive with the sound of music now, but in our minds, the movie will remain among a few of our favourite things. We may not know how to solve a problem like Maria, but we know that this guitar-wielding, musicloving postulant at the Nonnberg Abbey had had that confidence in confidence alone. The film - based on the true story of Maria Von Trapp – not only gave us a beautiful tour of the green vales and hills of Austria and Swiss Alps, but also showed us the struggles of a wannabe nun caught in a moral dilemma – whether to choose the love of this world, or the glory of the other. To choose between the widowed Captain - with seven children - and her long-time decision to become a nun, must have been very tough. Interestingly, however, in her memoir called ‘The Story of the Trapp Family Singers’ the real Maria Von Trapp whose role Julie Andrews played, said this: “I really and truly was not in love. I liked him but didn’t love him. However, I loved the children, so in a way I really married the children. I learned to love him more than I have ever loved before or after.” Released on March 2, 1965 – and shot for a little over $8 million – the film is today third on the list of Hollywood blockbusters, with a staggering $1.2 billion in ticket sales, when adjusted for inflation. That is an estimate from Fortune Magazine. I believe, however, that the real worth of this movie can never ever be effectively quantified. For example, the city of Salzburg in the last fifty years has grown into a major tourist destination in Austria, mainly due to ‘The Sound of Music’. Can we estimate the employment it must have generated in the tourism industry there? Also, millions of long-playing records, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, CDs and DVDs of this movie and its music must have been sold in the last half-century. Can we estimate the collective worth? Those spirit-uplifting melodies and those eyesoothing locales – not to mention the powerful historical backdrop of the Third Reich – have definitely contributed to increased knowledge and mental wellbeing of those who watched and listened? Can we ever estimate that special feel-good factor? This fifty year old movie still delights and excites children and families in ways that current movies cannot. The ongoing primary market rate softening, together with overcapacity in the global reinsurance market, will likely put further downward pressure on reinsurance rates within the region. Property catastrophe loss free policies typically declined 10 per cent at January 2015 across the Middle East, with property risk loss free accounts also down approximately 5pc. These rate reductions, combined with a loosening of terms and conditions, will exacerbate profitability pressures over time. Increased competition could lead to further pressure on already declining reinsurance rates in the region and the worsening of a market already exhibiting signs of excess-capacity, as many reinsurers still find this region attractive, particularly from a geographic diversification perspective, says Moody’s. Dubai vercapacity in the GCC’s reinsurance market, which has led to further softening of reinsurance rates, will continue to add pressure to Gulf reinsurers’ financial profiles, says Moody’s Investors Service in a report published Thursday. “Although underwriting loss ratios for many Moody’s rated players in the region are generally healthy given the benign claims of environment, overcapacity in the GCC reinsurance market has led to a softening of rates, adding pressure on margins at a time when investment returns will likely remain at historic lows. We expect these trends to continue in the coming years, absent significant deteriorations in underwriting loss ratios,” says Mohammed Ali Londe, an analyst at Moody’s. These days, savvy marketers are leveraging the power of mobile push notifications and SMS to build relationships with consumers in brief, real-time alerts. A strong 52 percent of smartphone users have push notifications enabled, and all mobile phones—smart or not–can receive text messages. Think of push and SMS as the “Hey, look at me!” to email marketing’s “Check me out when you have time.” Each serves its own marketing purposes and fulfills different business needs. That said, push and SMS are marketing tools that must be handled wisely: 80 percent of consumers always have their phone with them, so if your business sends too many of these messages, consumers will get annoyed quickly. Here are some strategies businesses can use to market via SMS and push in a smart, engaging way. Let’s start with the basics: SMS What it is: An acronym for “short message service,” SMS is the industry term for text messages between two or more users. SMS messages do not require an app or even a smartphone. Benefits: • Since it works on any mobile phone, SMS has a wide reach • It doesn’t require users to opt in to receiving messages • It allows for personalization, such as including a user’s name or location • It lets users write back, encouraging them to engage with your brand • Most importantly for small businesses on a budget, it does not require a dedicated app Disadvantages: • In the U.S., businesses must follow strict opt-in/opt-out participation guidelines and spam messaging can get you blacklisted • If your phone number list is outdated, you may experience delivery failures • Let’s face it—customers are sometimes hesitant to give a business their phone number in the first place Push Notifications What it is: Short messages sent through an app to a user’s mobile device. Users have to opt in to receive push notifications, which can be sent even when the user is not using the app. Benefits: • Push lets you concentrate on your best customers—if users have downloaded your app and opted in to push notifications, they are already engaged with your brand • It increases app launches by 88 percent • It gets around SMS’s privacy issues with clear opt-in/ opt-out functionality • It offers deeper segmentation options Disadvantages: • As mentioned above, it requires your business to have an app Where you may have seen it: • Coupon site RetailMeNot uses geofencing to deliver push notifications to consumers near shopping malls, alerting them to coupons from retailers inside the mall Which should I use? Ask yourself a couple of questions: Do you actively acquire customers’ cell phone numbers? Do you already have an app, and if not, does it make sense to the overall business to build one? Still on the fence? Then give push a try. Push notifications allow user segmentation based on in-app behavior, which can triple your conversion rates and, down the line, inspire brand loyalty. It can sync to devices beyond smartphones and tablets, something beyond the capabilities of SMS. Or you could be extra savvy and use both: 43 percent of consumers are more likely to purchase when SMS and push are both pieces of a wellcoordinated marketing campaign. As long as you’re engaging with your customers in a positive way, you’ve made the right decision. The lowering of the economic growth target was widely expected by economists and reflects the reality of a multi-year slowdown in the Asian giant that has seen it come off regular annual double-digit expansions. “Over the past year, the international and domestic environments faced by China in its development have been complicated and challenging,” Li said. “The road to global economic recovery has been rough, with many ups and downs, and the performance of the major economies has been divergent,” he added. “Downward pressure on China’s economy has continued to mount, and we have faced an array of interwoven difficulties and challenges.” Adidas 2014 profit slumps 37pc Berlin didas, the German maker of sportswear and equipment, said Thursday that economic turbulence in Russia and difficulties in its golfing sector were partly behind a fall in net profit last year. For this year, it forecasts net profit increasing by seven to 10 per cent and has maintained its sales growth targets. Net profit slumped more than 37pc in 2014 compared to the previous year, to 490 million euros ($541m), well below the 642m euros pencilled in by financial services agency FactSet. Sales grew by 2.3pc to 14.5 billion euros, said the group which has been hit by the falling ruble in its key market of Russia. A Detroit gearing up for connected cars Geneva t could be the battle of the titans. Auto giants at the Geneva Motor Show say they welcome the potential move of Silicon Valley players into their sector but experts warn of major disruptions. Google has long made headlines with its plans for a self-driving car, but Apple is now also reportedly readying for a plunge into the industry to begin developing an electric car. “This could surprise you, but I welcome with open arms the interest of Apple, Google and others in the auto industry,” Volkswagen head Martin Winterkorn said, adding he thought it would help garner interest for cars among new generations who grow up connected. Fiat-Chrysler chief Sergio Marchionne agreed, saying the Californian giants’ arrival would be “exactly what this industry needed.” Ditto for Renault-Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn. An employee of French company Segula Technologies points at a tablet inside a virtual reality connected cockpit car. An electric car is displayed at the stand of German carmaker Mercedes. Friday, March 6, 2015 “I’m absolutely not fearful or hostile” towards a possible arrival of Apple, he said at the motor show. “I consider that all the people who join the electric car are some kind of allies.” Marchionne acknowledged that their arrival would be “disruptive” but argued it would benefit everyone in the long term. Google and Apple’s interest in vehicles may have got all the industry’s top dogs to react, but many experts doubt that Silicon Valley players actually want to launch into car manufacturing, which yields much lower margins that what they are used to. “If companies like Apple or Google had really wanted to invest in auto production, they could have taken advantage of the crisis to do so,” said Josselin Chabert of consultants PwC. He believes that Apple’s interest in electric cars -- as yet unconfirmed by the iPhone and iPad maker -- is designed to spook traditional car makers and influence them into partnering with the tech firm for their connected vehicles. he term “fast food” conjures up the increasingly dated notion of burgers with a side of fries. Today, a wider-thanever array of foods is ready fast, including subs and sandwiches, pizza, ethnic fare and more. Fast-food restaurants “are where customers select foods and pay a per-person tab between $3 and $9 before eating. “Fast casual,” now growing faster than traditional fast food places, combines fast service with higher-quality ingredients and foods that ring up an average tab between $10 and $13. But don’t bestow the halo of health on fast-casual restaurants. Just like nearly all restaurants, these places serve meals across the nutritional spectrum and it’s up to you to make healthful decisions. Tasty coffee for a healthy heart Tracking diseases in the mobile age B eing stuck in bed, waiting for the flu to run its course, is pretty unpleasant. And it’s also really boring. What else is there to do but search for symptoms online, and read entries about the flu on Wikipedia or WebMD or post messages on Facebook and Twitter about how sick you are? A lot of people get the flu every year and many of them do exactly that: they search for relevant information, and share their misery with the rest of us. The consequence is remarkable: a description of their symptoms, time-stamped and perhaps even geo-tagged, is online. Which means that the Internet has a rather detailed picture of the health of the population, coming from digital sources, through all of our connected devices, including smartphones. Digital epidemiology has the potential to be a powerful boon for traditional epidemiology. Researchers have already started to develop methods and strategies for using this to support infectious disease monitoring and surveillance or understand attitudes and concerns about infectious diseases. But much more needs to be done to integrate digital epidemiology with existing practices, and to address ethical concerns about privacy. By 2020, there will be 6.1 billion smartphone users, so it is high time to get serious about digital epidemiology. Video game offers entertaining new treatment for ‘lazy eye’ V ideo game developer Ubisoft and a partner firm announced Tuesday the first therapeutic use of a video game to treat amblyopia, also known as “lazy eye,” which afflicts mostly children. Amblyopia afflicts an estimated three percent of children worldwide and if left untreated is a leading cause of blindness in adults. The ocular disorder involves decreased vision in one eye as the result of a turned eye or because one eye is more powerful than the other. Traditional treatments, including patching of the sighted eye, often fail because of social stigmas and long treatment times leading to poor compliance and a high relapse. The video game, called “Dig Rush,” uses both eyes binocularly to train the brain in order to improve visual acuity, instead of training just the weak eye. A physician simply adjusts the game’s settings, using different contrast levels of red and blue that can be seen through stereoscopic glasses, to allow both eyes to see the gameplay unfolding. The game is awaiting regulatory approval. D rinking a few cups of coffee a day may help people avoid clogged arteries - a known risk factor for heart disease Korean researchers believe. They studied more than 25,000 male and female employees who underwent routine health checks at their workplace. Employees who drank a moderate amount of coffee - three to five cups a day - were less likely to have early signs of heart disease on their medical scans. The findings reopen the debate about whether coffee is good for the heart. Researchers found that People who drank a few cups of coffee a day were less likely to have calcium deposits in their coronary arteries than people who drank more than this or no coffee at all. Eating peanuts prevents allergy! I t may sound radical, but it works: Eating peanuts slashes the chance of a peanut allergy, at least in children at high risk of developing one, a much anticipated. With 640 children followed over 4 years. It was launched back in 2006, when both the United States and United Kingdom recommended that parents keep peanut products away from highrisk youngsters until they turned 3, advice families in other Western countries often followed, too. But as these children eschewed peanut butter, doctors were increasingly uncertain whether their recommendations were sound. Peanut allergies, which can be fatal, were soaring in the same countries that urged avoidance: In the United States, the prevalence of peanut allergy more than tripled between 1997 and 2008, to 1.4 per cent. In Israel, meanwhile, where the environment is not appreciably different from other industrialized countries, only about 0.17pc of schoolchildren were allergic. What was different there? For one, many Israeli babies consume a wildly popular snack of peanut puffs called Bamba by the time they’re 6 months old. Although evidence has continued to mount, even 8 or 10 years ago avoidance was already being called into question. All the babies were between 4 and 11 months old when they were enrolled, and all had an egg allergy, severe eczema, or both putting them at high risk of a peanut allergy down the road. Eating peanuts in the future could set off an allergic reaction. 16 Friday, March 6, 2015 Interior Minister Lt-General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa Thursday received newly-appointed UAE Ambassador Abdul Redha Abdullah Khouri. Originally introduced to the mile-long island of Aoshima to deal with mice that plagued fishermen’s boats, the cats stayed on and multiplied. The cats are not too picky, surviving on the rice balls, energy bars or potatoes they cadge off tourists. In the absence of natural predators, they roam the island without fear The only sign of human activity now is the boatload of day-trippers from the mainland, visiting what is locally known as Cat Island More than 120 cats swarm the island with only a handful of humans for company mostly pensioners who didn’t join the waves of migrants seeking work in the cities on mainland Japan after the Second World War. Aoshima, a 30-minute ferry ride off the coast of Ehime prefecture, had been home to 900 people in 1945. The only sign of human activity now is the boatload of day-trippers from the mainland, visiting what is locally known as Cat Island. With no restaurants, cars, shops or kiosks selling snacks, Aoshima is no tourist haven. But cat lovers are not complaining. “There is a ton of cats here, then there was this sort of cat witch who came out to feed the cats which was quite fun,” said 27-year-old Makiko Yamasaki. “So I’d want to come again.” The allure of cats is not surprising in a country that gave the world Hello Kitty, a cartoon character considered the epitome of cuteness. Cat cafes have long been popular in Tokyo, catering to fans who can’t keep the animals at home because of strict housing regulations that often forbid pets. The cats of Aoshima are not too picky, surviving on the rice balls, energy bars or potatoes they cadge off tourists. In the absence of natural predators, they roam the island without fear. Not all the residents are admirers, though. One elderly woman shooed the animals away with a stick when they dug up her back garden. Locals are trying to keep the feline population in check - at least 10 cats have been neutered. Residents haven’t taken too kindly to the tourists either. They don’t mind them coming, but want to be left in peace. “If people coming to the island find the cats healing, then I think it’s a good thing,’ said 65-yearold Hidenori Kamimoto, who ekes out a living as a fisherman.” “I just hope that it’s done in a way that doesn’t become a burden on the people who live here.” 22 Ripley’s Friday, March 6, 2015 CrossworD CAP the snAP by John Graziano 23 Friday, March 6 , 2015 Across Head this challenge. Talks not sign of warming ties: US Washington he United States ruled out Wednesday any suggestion that talks with Iran over its nuclear programme are signs of warming relations between two countries whose diplomatic ties collapsed 35 years ago. Iran and the so-called P5+1 -- Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States and Germany -- are trying to strike a deal that would prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear bomb, a goal it denies having. In return, Iran is seeking an easing of punishing economic sanctions. Both sides face a March 31 deadline for a framework deal. “Even as we negotiate, this in no way represents a broader warming of ties, lessening of concerns on our part,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said. “We are not linking the nuclear agreement or a successful nuclear agreement to a broader warming of ties, to a broader rapprochement on other issues, or in general.” Boko Haram kills 68, including children China extends military splurge T was discovered in a business zone on the outskirts of Lavau in France’s Champagne region, said the National Archaeological Research Institute, Inrap. President Barack Obama, anxious to avoid a drawn-out ground war, has backed an air campaign, but ruled out deploying infantry. The sauce should now be syrupy, a deep-browny, red colour and very glossy. Meanwhile, line a 900g/2lb loaf tin with a double layer of cling film, leaving any excess hanging over the edge. Slice each Madeira cake into eight 2cm/¾in slices. Stir the reserved quarter of berries gently into the cooled sauce. Tip the mixture into a large sieve placed over a medium bowl. Leave for two minutes to allow the syrup to drain through but do not press as you don’t want the fruit to become mushy. Sit the sieve on the pan so you can use the fruity syrup you have in the bowl for now. Dip a slice of Madeira cake into the syrup, flip it over and then allow excess syrup to drip off. Place it against one of the long sides of the loaf tin. Continue to dip the slices in the syrup and use 3-4 slices along each side of the tin to cover. Place one on each end and then 2-3 slices along the bottom, breaking up to fit, if necessary. Reserve the remaining slices for the top. Tip the berries from the sieve into the cake lined loaf tin, spreading them evenly. Add any syrup in the pan to the remaining syrup in the bowl and dip the remaining Madeira slices to coat as before. Press the slices on top of the berries to completely cover. Reserve any remaining syrup and store it covered in the fridge for use later. Cover the loaf with the excess cling film and place a small baking tray or a long plate on top. If you have room in your fridge, you can weigh the tray down with a couple of cans of food or something similar to help compress the fruit. Place in the fridge for about six hours, or overnight, until set firm. About 10 minutes before serving, make the chocolate sauce. Put the cream in a medium pan over a medium heat and keep a close eye on it, remove just before it comes to the boil. Break the chocolate into the cream and leave to melt for five minutes before gently stirring together. Stir in the hot water to give a smooth, pourable consistency. Pour into a serving jug and keep warm. Open out the cling film on the Madeira cake, turn a serving plate upside down on top of the loaf and turn both over. Remove the tin and peel off the cling film to reveal the pudding. Brush all over with the reserved syrup and decorate the top with the reserved berries and mint leaves. Serve at once with the chocolate sauce. The loaf can be cut into eight slices using a long sharp knife. Bahrain A A total of 30 teams will be in action over the weekend split into two competitions, one being the main competition and the other being for social teams. Aside from Bahrain, last year’s champions Dubai ‘A’ who defeated Dubai ‘B’ 11-8 in the final hosted by Bahrain, will be two of the seven Dubai teams represented, while third placed Abu Dhabi ‘A’ who narrowly defeated Bahrain last year by one goal 8-7 in the third place play-off will be one of five teams from the UAE capital. Other teams in the fray are four from Doha, three from Saudi Arabia, two each from Kuwait and Al Ain and one from Fujairah. This edition of the championships is the biggest so far in the history of the event. As part of the preparations for the championships, Bahrain brought out four top Netball coaches and umpires from England and conducted an intensive five-day ‘Boot Camp’ for Bahrain’s teams for an eighth year involving netball skills and umpiring, those participating were Gilly Salter, Sue Wainwright and Gina Pearce who were all here last year and Jean Davies. Adding to the professionalism of the championship are 12 top umpires from the UK, up from seven last year who will officiate the matches being played on five courts. The second day of competition tomorrow will see the knockout matches starting from 8.45am and concluding around 3pm followed by a prize awarding ceremony. Also over the weekend, organisers will be raising cash for Carly Taylor who was a highly talented and integral member of Hucclecote Netball Club in England when she suffered a horrendous accident in which she broke three vertebrae in her neck leaving her para- lysed from the shoulders down. She played in the Bahrain Inter-Gulf Netball Championships in an Invitational Cup in Bahrain in 2009 and is held in high regard in her rehabilitation. Chair for the third year of the organising committee and 10th year as a player is Helen Stewart who said, “We are hopeful of improving on last year’s fourth place and this year apart from our A, B and C teams, we are also fielding a veterans team for the first time and two youth sides and a record 30 teams from around the region.” Helen Edwards the event manager for the championships said, “It is a great honour for Bahrain to hold the event for the second consecutive year and I would like to thank DHL, Alba and Al Osra for their support of the event, though it will be strange that Mel Goosen who has played in every tourna- ment since 1996 when she was 14 years of age will be coaching this time instead of playing!” BAHRAIN SQUADS Bahrain A: Ruth Daly, Helen Hind, Shelly Mohi, Khulood Sabah, Rama Salem, Juliet Meijburg-Schoorlemmer, Helen Stewart, Martine Timmer-Arends, Laura Bibby, Paige Baker. Bahrain B 30 Friday, March 6, 2015 31 Friday, March 6, 2015 battle ready Kohli told to ‘respect team dignity’ Gayle force keeps India on toes Perth efending champions India will look to continue their recent success against Chris Gayle when they clash with the West Indies in the World Cup at the WACA ground in Perth on Friday. The explosive left-hander has not passed 50 in his last 10 one-day innings against India and not hit a century against them since 2006, but Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men know that does not guarantee another cheap wicket. Just last week demolishing the bowling attack like only he or South Africa’s AB de Villiers can do. De Villiers gave Gayle a taste D R of his own medicine a few days later in Sydney, smashing a glorious unbeaten 162 off 66 balls that drew warm applause even from the awestruck Jamaican. Dhoni conceded it was tough to have a bowling plan or set fields for batsmen like Gayle and De Villiers. “If the individual is hitting sixes, you can’t have fields for that,” the Indian captain said. “There’s not much you can do. You certainly can’t have a fixed plan for something like that.” India can draw comfort from the unpredictable game of the West Indies, where highs and lows mingle so frequently that is leaves even “I mean for the last six months they have been playing rubbish. They come to the World Championship and they start playing properly,” he said. the most passionate Caribbean supporter exasperated. In their first three matches of the ongoing World Cup, the West Indies posted 304-7 in losing to Ireland, 310-6 against Pakistan and 372-2 versus Zimbabwe in a grand show of their batting prowess. But they crashed to 151 in their next game trying to chase South Africa’s 408-5 with legspinner Imran Tahir returning with five wickets. In contrast, India have played consistently to record three consecutive wins, including a 76-run defeat of old foes Pakistan and a stunning 130-run win over the mighty South Africans. Sydney ustralia coach Darren Lehmann made a journey of more than 3,000 kilometres to present his son, Jake, with his South Australia first-class cap. The morning after Australia had thrashed Afghanistan by 275 runs in the World Cup in Perth, Lehmann made the long journey to Adelaide. “It was a very memorable moment,” former Australia batsman Lehmann told. “He’s done all the hard work and he deserves the opportunity so now it’s up to him to do the rest,” added Lehmann of his 22-year-old son. “I’m very proud and excited for him. He’s got a career ahead and now it’s up to him to make the most of it.” A Watson vows to fight for Aussie future Perth ll-rounder Shane Watson refused to give up on his international career on Thursday after being dropped for Australia’s record-breaking 275-run World Cup win over Afghanistan. The powerful right-hander’s dual ability with bat and ball has made him an integral part of the limited overs team for A Tigers Nelson angladesh kept their World Cup quarter-final hopes alive when they defeated Scotland by six wickets in Nelson on Thursday, achieving the second highest successful run-chase in tournament history. In a Pool A match of tumbling national records, Bangladesh overtook Scotland’s 318 with 11 balls to spare. Each time Scotland felt they had made a significant breakthrough as Bangladesh narrowed in on the target, up stepped another batsman to maintain the pace. Tamim Iqbal top scored with 95, Mohammed Mahmudullah added 62 and Mushfiqur Rahim produced 60 before Shakib Al Hasan (not out 52) and Sabbir Rahman (not out 42) finished the game off. Batting is Bangladesh’s strength and to haul in Scotland’s 318 they played without panic to produce the second highest successful chase by any team -- behind Ireland’s 329 against England in 2011 -- in a World Cup match. Bangladesh must now beat either a floundering England B Perth ndian star Virat Kohli was ordered to “respect the dignity” of the team Thursday after he became involved in an unseemly row with a journalist tracking the defending champions’ World Cup campaign. Kohli was accused of verbally abusing a reporter he mistakenly thought was the writer for another newspaper. The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon at the Murdoch Oval in Perth where India were training ahead of their Pool B match against the West Indies at the city’s WACA ground on Friday. As soon as he wrapped up his net session, Kohli stormed to the sidelines and let off a volley of expletives at a horrified Indian reporter, eyewitnesses said. The visibly shaken journalist wondered why Kohli had pounced on him without any possible provocation -- until it was found to be a case of mistaken identity. I Team India’s performances Lehmann makes David Warner gifts inconsistent like Bollywood stars long journey Bengaluru enowned British author and a former MP Jeffrey Archer on Wednesday said the current Indian cricket team puzzles him and compared the Mahendra Singh Dhoni- led side with Bollywood superstars, who according to him are famous for their inconsistencies in giving hit films. “Frankly speaking, I am puzzled by the current Indian team. I think Kohli is among the best batsman I have ever seen in my life, but I think that they are becoming too much like Bollywood superstars (who are inconsistent in giving hit films). Bangladesh win over Scotland by six wickets many years and he averages over 50 in World Cup cricket. But he was dropped for Wednesday’s game at the WACA to make way for fellow all-rounder James Faulkner, who was returning from injury. “I believe in myself and my own abilities. If an opportunity comes along, I’ll be ready to go,” Watson said. Watson was an onlooker as Australia trounced Afghanistan and suffered the ignominy of seeing his name wiped from the record books when he and Ricky Ponting’s 252-run partnership in a one-day international for Australia was passed by David Warner and Steve Smith. Watson’s individual Australian record of 185 not out also looked set to fall, until Warner holed out for 178. signed gloves to boy side, or so far unbeaten New Zealand, in their last two games to be assured of a quarter-final berth. Scotland did not make it easy for Bangladesh but for the second game in succession, following last week’s loss to Afghanistan, they succumbed to the pressure. Bangladesh s t a r t e d the chase one-man down after Anamul Haque dislocated his right shoulder cutting off a Preston Mommsen boundary after Scotland were sent into bat first. They were effectively two down when Soumya Sarkar was dismissed in the second over leaving Tamim and Mahmudullah to start the innings on a nearp e r f e c t batting strip. (AFP) Bangladesh celebrate ‘best’ victory Nelson angladesh held a celebration beating Scotland “best” run chase a World Cup T h e i r B Perth avid Warner has gifted a signed pair of gloves to a young Afghan boy who was hit during the AustraliaAfghanistan clash at the WACA, Perth. During his whirlwind innings of 178 against the Afghans, Warner hit numerous sixes, one of which struck the young boy Shahabuddin, on the torso. Shahab was in pain, but was soon seen sporting an ice pack. “Yeah, I didn’t realise until I saw it on the big screen. I gave him a pair of gloves and signed them and I just had a little quick chat there with him and his father, and he’s a bit better now. He had a little bit of a bandage on him, but I said I hope he gets well. Didn’t have much to say, though,” Warner said. D double Thursday, with their and closing in on quarter-final berth. 322-4 to overhaul Scotland’s 318-8 with 11 balls to spare was the second highest successful run chase in World Cup history behind Ireland’s 329 to beat England in 2011. The win kept Bangladesh in the top four in Pool A along with New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Australia and they need to beat either England or New Zealand in their final two matches to be guaranteed a berth in the quarter-finals. Opener Tamim Iqbal said their plan was to shut out thoughts of trying to overhaul a 300plus total. roar Today’s Match India v West Indies at Perth (14:30 local | 06:30 GMT ) TOP RUNS SCORERS 270 SHAIMAN ANWAR UAE Scotland K. Coetzer reached the landmark in style with a huge six, his second of the innings at Saxton Oval. He was eventually out for a personal best 156 while anchoring Scotland’s record World Cup total of 318 for eight. It was the 30-year-old Coetzer’s second ODI c e n t u r y following his ton against Afghanistan in 2013. “The guys at the other end were scoring and that took the pressure off me,” Coetzer said, adding he took “a calculated risk by hitting a six to go to a hundred.” Since playing in the World Cup for the first time in 1999, it has taken Scotland 16 years and 12 matches to have a batsman score a century and for the team to post a total in excess of 300. The hosts began on the front foot as Arturo Vidal launched into a series of forays towards the Viola’s final third, but the Chilean wasn’t able to find the target. Despite Juve’s early dominance, Fiorentina countered through F Joaquin, whose cross towards the far post was nodded just wide by Jasmin Kurtic. In the 11th minute, the visitors took the lead in spectacular fashion, Mohamed Salah surging down the right flank before driving inside, holding off a challenge and smashing a shot high into the net. Juve appeared shell shocked at first, but they managed to regroup and, midway through the first half,SImone Pepe’s cross from the right fell to Fernando Llorente, who glanced a header home off the base of the far post. Both sides continued to push forward in what proved to be an exciting, openended affair, but neither was able to edge into the lead come the half- time whistle. Four minutes after the restart, Micah Richards’s low drive from the right forced goalkeeper Marco Storari to push the ball behind for a corner. Fiorentina continued to turn the screw and were effectively gifted the lead just before the hour as Claudio Marchisio conceded possession on the edge of his own area, which allowed Salah to bear down on goal and stroke the ball home. The beleaguered hosts set about trying to find a way back into the game for the second time, and for a while they were banging on the Viola door through Carlos Tevez and Paul Pogba. By the latter stages of the match, both sides were launching forward at every opportunity, but Fiorentina were able to hold out and secure the win.
