OBITUARY
Dr. Freeman Minson Smith
Dr. Freeman Minson Smith, Emeritus Professor of Watershed
Science in Colorado State University’s Warner College of Natural
Resources, passed away from complications of Parkinson’s
disease and leukemia at 75 years of age on Oct. 3, 2014 in San
Mateo, Calif. Minson left a lasting impression among family,
colleagues, students, and friends and will be remembered and
missed by many.
Minson was born on Jan. 9, 1939, to Harold “Jeff” and Margaret Smith in Superior, Ariz., who predeceased him. He attended
all years of school in Superior, graduating from Superior High
School in 1957. After winning the Magma Scholarship, he
received his bachelors and masters degrees at the University of
Arizona and PhD from Colorado State University in Fort Collins,
Superior Funeral Home

Minson was a dedicated husband, father, friend, teacher and
mentor who was kind, generous, patient, thoughtful, and dedicated. He was a congenial man of unwavering integrity, highly
respected by his family, friends, students and faculty and recognized and appreciated as a mentor for new faculty. His family
considered him the “Rock” of the family.
He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Emily Meyer Smith,
originally of Florence, Ariz., and his sons, Lincoln Smith of
Wyoming, and Walter Smith of San Mateo, Calif. Additionally he
is survived by his sisters, Marnee Smith Sell of Tucson, Ariz., and
Jacque Smith Burdette of Gig Harbor, Wash.
Minson and Emily moved to San Mateo, Calif., in 2012, where
he resided with his son, Walter, and daughter-in-law, Zari, who
took care of him when his Parkinson’s disease took over.
Minson joined the watershed faculty at Colorado State University in 1971 and retired from Colorado State University in 2005.

He taught courses in Ecosystem and Watershed Modeling and
represented Watershed Science in the college-wide Natural Resources Management courses for seniors. He also worked closely
with the NSF-sponsored IBP Grassland Ecosystem Program.
Minson enjoyed working with international graduate students
and roughly 70 percent of his 55 M.S. and 26 Ph.D. students
were from countries other than the US. He organized and led the
College International Forestry School, one of several international schools on campus during the 1980s and 1990s. In the late
1980s, CSU was asked to participate in the Peace Corps Master’s
Program in Agriculture and in Forestry and Natural Resources.
Dr. Smith was selected to coordinate the program in Forestry
and Natural Resources – a program that allowed Peace Corps
volunteers to earn M.S. credit toward their master’s degrees.
In addition to his mentorship of graduate students, Minson also
enjoyed interacting with undergraduates. He pursued this interest by teaching Principles of Watershed Management and by
serving as a member of the teaching team for the summer field
course at CSU’s Mountain Campus at Pingree Park (NR220) for
many years.
He was highly respected by students and faculty and recognized
and appreciated as a mentor for new faculty. Minson has been
described as the “glue” behind key activities and a critical support person. He often stepped up to do things that others did not
want to do, or did not have the time for. It goes without saying
that Minson Smith will be missed by so many.
His ashes will be spread near Superior, Ariz., his birthplace and
a place he loved.

Remain ‘Union Strong’
A little reminder and message to our
young generation of workers and union
members: The history of our labor unions
goes beyond your generation, your parents,
your grandparents … We fight and stand
together as brothers and sisters, because
of the tremendous fight before us. Unions
fought and suffered for you to have safe
working conditions, fair wages, benefits,
the 40 hour work week with compensation
for overtime, a mission to establish the
middle class with livable wages, and the list
goes on and on.
To the workers who want to be petty and
use social media to slam the union fight
that continues, and began way before you
have imagined, don’t be selfish. If you think
these great corporate companies will grant
you what you deserve, by all means, negotiate your own individual contract. Just try.
Give way to your health insurance, which
many workers in other companies would
love to have. Give up on your overtime pay
for hours worked during the week beyond
the 40 hours. Give up your bonus. Convince them what you deserve to be paid for
your skills and insist on tremendous benefits that so many companies do not think
you deserve. We, as union brothers and
sisters, know the struggle our former and
past brothers and sisters have endured. Respect them! They showed pride, dedication,
strength, compassion and a fight for many
things that we - you - are enjoying without
realizing the sacrifices that were made. We
must stand together, support each other,
and represent our ancestors with dignity
and pride. We - you- should learn how to
appreciate a fight that involves, and has
involved, so many hardworking men and
women. We must remain “Union Strong”!

OBITUARIES
Celedonia ‘Sally’ Lopez Yniguez
Celedonia “Sally” Lopez Yniguez, 88 was
called home to the arms of the Lord on Feb. 16,
2015. She was born in Sonora, Ariz. on March
3, 1926. She attended school up to the eighth
grade. She married Epifanio “Guero” Yniguez
in 1948. They moved to Superior in 1954 and
were married for 29 years before Guero passed
away in 1977.
Sally was a member of St. Francis Catholic
Church. She sung in the church choir for
many years. She was a homemaker and was
very active in the community. She was one of
the founding members of the “Happy Face”
organization providing food and assistance
for those in need during the holidays. She was
a member of the Women’s Auxiliary, Logia
Porfirio Diaz , and a master of ceremonies for
the St. Francis Fiestas for many years. She was
very active in picketing and marching during
the formation of the Miners Union in the 1950s
and 60s. She loved Mariachi and Mexican Folk
music and enjoyed singing and storytelling.
She was a great
cook and enjoyed
spending time with
family and friends.
She was very patriotic
and was extremely
proud of her MexicanAmerican Heritage.
She was a strong
influence on many

Sally was preceded in death by her daughter
Maria “Kelly” Yniguez. She is survived by her
son Robert Yniguez (Mary Frances), daughter
Veronica Yniguez-Apodaca (Alex) and son
Henry Yniguez (Rosanne); eight grandchildren,
Michael, Aaron, Bobby, Kelly, Larissa, Alex,
Emiliano, Ariana; 11 great grandchildren,
Marisela, Tatiana, Jay, Victor, Annette, Jordan,
Keyona, Alex Jr., Lilli , Diego and Niko,
brother Salome Lopez and many nieces and
nephews and extended family whom she was
very close to.
Funeral Services were held Feb. 21, 2015 at St.
Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Superior.
Interment at Fairview Cemetery. Donations
may be made in her name to St. Francis of

Virginia Lee Boeger
Virginia Lee Boeger was
born Jan. 23, 1919 to William
Roy Miller and Lula Miller, at
Peculiar, Missouri. She died
Feb. 15, 2015 , in Phoenix,
Arizona.
Virginia L. Miller and John
B. Boeger were married
October 30, 1937, in Belton, Mo. They made their
home in Arizona, living in
Tucson, and Phoenix before
moving to Ray, Arizona in
1941 where John worked for
Kennecott Copper Corp. In
1948 they moved to Superior, AZ, where they owned the
Western Auto Store. They
made many lifelong friends
in Superior. They moved to
Phoenix and owned a NAPA
auto parts store (Desert Auto
Supply) until they retired. After retiring they traveled
in a VW camper to all of the
states and the south part of
Canada.
Virginia was an amateur
artist. She was a member of
the Valley Artist League and

Local citizen pays it forward
and helps a stranded visitor
On Feb 18, we started the day by going
to Los Hermanos for a delicious lunch
then for a great visit to Boyce Thompson
Arboretum. What a beautiful garden!
Then we wanted to drive to see the copper
mines…as we drove in the mountains, our
car overheated and we stopped again and
again. Finally we pulled off at the place
where the school buses come. Two of us
from Wisconsin and two from Missouri …
We did not know what to do.
We could not get a tow truck because of a
big accident at a near town.
Then a white truck drove up and a man
named Michael asked if he could help. He
said that the day before he had an accident
and some people drove him home and he
wanted to “pay it forward” and help us. He
got water from his truck and poured water
in a place under the hood. He told us to
turn on the heater. He helped us for the
longest time. He even told us he would
drive us the 47 miles to where we were
staying. A young woman who knew about
cars also helped us, but we didn’t learn her
name.
With Michael’s help we got the car going
and he followed us and even got more
water for us from his store…and told us
to call him and let him know we arrived
safely.
His name was Michael and he owns the
Save Money Market in Superior.
We are so grateful for his help and that he
was our “Good Samaritan”

Tribal member speaks out
against land exchange
My name is Tina Mull. I am the granddaughter
of Marvin Mull, Sr., our former Tribal
Chairman and my father is Marvin Mull, Jr.,
our former Vice Chairman of the San Carlos
Apache Tribe.
As a youth, I remember my late grandfather
who always talked to us about standing up for
our Apache People and protecting what belongs
to us Apaches. That includes our water, our
land, our natural resources and our identity as
being Apaches. This is why I am speaking out
against what is happening to us as Apaches and
many of you don’t know the real story.
The Southeast Arizona Land Exchange
Bill that was passed last December, 2014,
sabotages one of the most important and basic
environmental and cultural protection laws in
the U.S., which is the National Environmental
Policy Act (NEPA). Under NEPA law, the
public would have been able to comment and
obtain information from the USFS about the
significant environmental , cultural and human
right impacts and harms caused by this mine.
Exempting the mine’s structure and plan of
operation from NEPA is like taking away the
Magna Carta or being exempt from the U.S.
Constitution or taking away the Bill of Rights.
The USFS should be required by federal law to
describe all of the potential impacts and harms
of this mine to the land, water and air pollution
and human and cultural and historical harms in
the so-called Environmental Impact Statement
(EIS).
Where is the review of what efforts the mining
company will have to make to protect the
priceless cultural, historical, Native American,
riparian, recreational and environmental values
at stake here?
BHP and Rio Tinto, who are foreign mining
companies have horrendous environmental and
human rights records at their third world mine
sites, but, also at their U.S. and other non-third
world mining properties.
Oak Flat was protected by President Dwight
Eisenhower, and, later, reaffirmed by President
Richard Nixon. And, along came Senator John
McCain, who ran for the U.S. Presidency and
lost the election! In return, he helps these two
foreign mining companies, who associate with
Iran and Iraq, to build a mine on U.S. soil on
land holy and sacred to our Apaches!
Now, who will monitor the mine when they
dewater and destroy the critical groundwater
aquifer vital to maintaining plant and animal
life of the priceless Ga’an Canyon riparian

Legends of Superior Trail Fest
The Legends of Superior Trail Committee
along with their partners Resolution
Copper, Arizona Trail Association and
the Superior Optimist Club hosted the
fourth annual Legends of Superior Trail
Fest on Saturday. Outdoor enthusiasts
visited the event and took several hikes
and heard lectures about the area and had
the opportunity to visit many recreation
booths. New to the tour this year was a
guided tour of the Resolution Copper
mine.
A fan favorite of the event was the
geology walk and talk with ASU professor
Steve Semkin. The Crossing Over
Paranormal Society hosted a ghost walk
and presented some of the paranormal
data that they have collected on their
research from their visits to haunted
places in Superior.

Town of Superior fire truck renovation begins

In November 2014 Henry
Munoz presented the Superior
Town Council with a proposal
to renovate the 1947 Pierce
Fire Truck as a representation
and honor to the past and
present fire fighters of
Superior. The restoration
work has begun. There is
much work to be completed
on this 1947 Pierce Fire Truck
that was originally purchased
for the community from
Magma Copper Company.
In January of this year
the Restoration Committee
was formed consisting of:

overall body and frame are in
good condition considering
the year of the fire truck.
After 15 years of the engine
not being started, it did start
to great relief. The truck is
in need of batteries, lower
engine over hall, interior work
and other parts as needed.
Henry Munoz said, “It
is the consensus of the
committee, that this truck
has an attachment to the
community as it has been
around for a long time. There
have been many individuals
such as fathers, grandfathers,
brothers, uncles and the Fire
Districts Woman Auxiliary
who have served as members
of the Superior Fire District
back then, and this is a
symbol of their service to
the community.” He added,
“Hopefully we can create
something so that they will
not be forgotten for their

FCCLA to host annual
Cancer Fight by Candlelight
The Superior High School FCCLA group will be hosting the
sixth annual Cancer Fight by Candlelight on Saturday, March 21
at 6 p.m. The event is designed to remember those who have
died from cancer, support those who are fighting cancer and
celebrate the cancer survivors. Funds raised from the event will
benefit the American Cancer Society.

With 2015 softball season around the corner, it’s time to start
previewing area teams and their season outlook. Lady Panthers’
second-year head coach Martin Navarrette didn’t mince words
when asked about the expectations for his team this season.
“Overall our outlook is positive,” he said. “(Our) goal is to go all
the way.”
With six returning starters, including five who received AllDivision IV and/or All-Section VI honors in 2014, the Lady
Panthers are perhaps one of the most experienced and talented
teams in the state.
All-Division selections Hunter Flanagan (Sr-OF), Gabby Salcido
(Jr-IF), and Cierra Navarrette (Sr-IF) were among the section
leaders in batting average, home runs, slugging percentage, runs
batted in and/or on-base percentage.
All-Section junior pitcher Ivie Lopez’ 12 wins last year were the
second most in Section VI. Her battery mate, Phalicitee (Pinky)
Thomas (Jr) also received All-Section honors.
Superior lost only two players off last year’s team, including 1B
Ariel Alonzo, who leaves “big shoes to fill,” according to the Lady
Panthers’ head coach.
He’s counting on freshman Alicia Arriola, who can also pitch,
to fill the void at first base. Angelina Vasquez and Jalisa Murray
are two more freshmen who are expected to make an impact this
season.
Last year the Lady Panthers finished the season ranked No. 5
in the final rankings and reached the quarterfinals of the state
tournament where they lost to No. 4 Ray.
Four teams in Section VI – Superior, Ray, Hayden, and San
Manuel – reached the 2014 state tournament, which was won for
the second-straight year by San Manuel.
“Section VI, by far, has the most talent in the division,” said
Navarrette, the 2014 Section VI Coach of the Year. “(This year) is
going to be a battle.”
Yes it is.
The Lady Panthers’ opponents figure to be thinking the same.
SHS Hall of Fame to induct
new members in March
The Superior High School Hall of Fame committee will host
their annual induction ceremony on Saturday, March 7, 2015
at the Superior Junior Senior High School “Manny Ruiz”
Gymnasium. The event will begin promptly at 4 p.m. with
a celebratory dinner followed by award presentations and
speeches by the inductees.
This year’s inductees are Betty Blaylock (Educator), Edward
Delgado class of 1963, Ronald Gomez class of 1963, Yolanda
Najera-Ewing class of 1965, James Ray class of 1965, Fernando
Vender class of 1958 and Lucy Wing class of 1963.
Those planning on attending are encouraged to purchase
their tickets in advance. Tickets are $25 per person and can be

Registration for the Superior Little League 2015 season will be held

early due to an early T-ball season start time. Final dates have not
been set at press time. Parents are advised to register their children
early. Registration for T-Ball will end on March 6 and the registration
for all other divisions will end on March 30. Registration cost is $45
for the first player in a household, $35 for the second player in a
household and $10 per additional player in each household. The fee
includes a full uniform: pants, jersey, socks, belt and Little League
patches. The fee also covers some of the administrative costs the
league has to pay including the Little League charter.

Fatal ATV accident kills driver
The importance of ATV safety
was evident on Saturday,
Feb. 21 when a fatal accident
took the life of the driver
and injured three very young
girls. A 911 call made at 6:45
p.m. reported an accident on
North Whitlow Dam Road in
Queen Valley. According to
the call the all-terrain vehicle
had rolled multiple times. The
driver was found unconscious
but breathing and the three
female juvenile passengers
were all injured.
PCSO Deputies along with
the Queen Valley Fire Department responded to the scene.
An air ambulance was also
dispatched.

side tires went off the roadway
and the vehicle tumbled down
a 15 to 20 foot hillside. At this
time it is not known if alcohol
was a factor.
Sheriff Paul Babeu stated,
“This all-terrain vehicle was
only equipped to carry the
driver and one passenger.
None of the occupants were
seat belted in at the time of the
crash. When the vehicle rolled
down the hill it landed on top
of Hopkins.” He added, “This
case is a tragic reminder of the
importance of only carrying
the number of passengers a
vehicle is designed for and to
always wear a seatbelt.”
