We Love Skating at WHCA!
Many thanks to all of the kids and families who came out
to enjoy a morning of skating at WHCA’s awesome arena
on (lucky!) Friday, February 13th at the Family Valentine’s
Skating Party. Although the weather was unseasonably
warm outside, the frosty temperatures and freshly
cleared ice at our inner-city neighbourhood arena were
appreciated by moms, dads and kids alike, with about
50 people taking part in the fun two hour event

We are excited to start our planning for Spruce Up the
Neighbourhood at WHCA, to be held on Saturday,
May 23rd from 9am – 2pm. This will once again be
a fun neighbourhood clean up with a bottle drive,
e-recycling, used household item drop off and possibly
some gardening fun too! Back by popular demand will
be our BBQ & BEvERage Garden, and hopefully a yummy
Bake Sale put on by the WHC Preschool families. Plan to
join us for this great community event & stay tuned for
more details to come. If you are interested in helping
out with the planning or volunteering on the day, please
contact Jo at volunteers@westhillhurst.com.
Preschoolers tried out their newfound skating legs,
seasoned skaters twirled and friends had a chance
to visit as they circled the ice or practiced their stickhandling skills. Hot chocolate & tea, yummy cookies &
fruit treats were on hand when it was time for a break.
What a great way to kick off the Family Day Weekend
and spend some time during Teacher’s Convention! A
special thank you to the WHCA Staff and a few lovely
neighbourhood caregivers who helped organ

Arena
Update
Future of WHCA Arena Uncertain
As many users of the WHCA arena are aware, our facility
is one of the oldest in the city and is in urgent need of
numerous upgrades. In order to better determine the
nature of these required upgrades, the WHCA board of
directors is working with engineers provided by the City
of Calgary to create a scope and cost estimate that is
expected to be completed in April 2015. It is anticipated
that the scope of work will include replacement of the
ice pad/boards, roof repairs, and numerous changes and
additions to the ice plant mechanical facility to bring
it up to current specifications and safety code. Based
on experiences of similar facilities, our preliminary
“guestimate” of costs ranges from $2.5 - $4.0 million
depending on which items are deemed necessary.
Obviously a project of this magnitude has significant
operational and financial implications.
WHCA management have worked diligently to ensure
the facility is in a position to create a small profit each
year; however, there is no way a facility of this size and
age can provide enough additional cash flow to cover
the millions of dollars of costs expected to be required
over the next 2-3 years. The City of Calgary has capital
project grants available (and we have made very good
use of them in the past) but they are limited to $300,000
per year. The WHCA board and membership will have
some large challenges and difficult decisions ahead of
us in order to chart a successful and sustainable future
for our facility.
One of the conclusions we have come to is that the
facility must operate at maximum efficiency in order to
provide even a small profit. In order to do this, we are
planning to keep ice through the summer of 2015 which
allows us to book many spring/summer leagues and
camps. Having ice revenue available 12 months of the
year will provide us with a healthier bottom line but also
makes the capital upgrades even more critical. Users
should be aware that if the necessary funding cannot
be procured, one of the options the City would review
would be to remove the ice and run the arena as a “dry
floor” facility for ball hockey, lacrosse or other activities
(note that this would still require some upgrades but
with lower capital cost than the ice rink upgrades.
The WHCA board will do our utmost best to ensure that
information relative to this important capital project
review is shared with our users and membership as it
becomes available. Please check our website regularly
and watch the Warbler for further news later this spring.

Parent-Child
Cooperative Playschool
Hello Everyone,
This will be the first of many updates concerning the
potential development of Crowchild Trail from 24
Avenue N.W. to 17 Avenue S.W.
While we are in the very, very early stages of what
this development could entail, the West Hillhurst
Community Association (“WHCA”) Board of Directors
is focused on communicating developments as
expeditiously as possible.
Here is what we know so far:
What is the Crowchild development plan?
The plan will identify the short-term and long-term
roadway upgrades necessary for moving high volumes
of vehicular traffic, while supporting all other modes
of transportation (walking, cycling, public transit) and
minimizing impacts to adjacent communities. The area
concerned is from 24 Avenue N.W. to 17 Avenue S.W.
How long is this plan expected to take?
Expected completion of the planning phase (ie. Phase 1
to Phase 6) will be by year-end 2016.
We are currently in Phase 1 which will be used to guide
Phases 2 to 6. Work from Phase 1 will be shared with the
public in the spring of 2015.
What is Phase 1?
Phase 1 will establish an Engagement Design Team to
answer the question “How do we have the most effective
conversation possible about the Crowchild Trail Corridor
Study?” A member from each affected community has
been chosen to attend three Phase 1 meetings in March.
Please note that Phase 1 is not about finding solutions
(at least not yet), it is about engagement.
How can I get engaged? Where can I find out more?
The WHCA Board of Directors are committed to
updating their constituents as information becomes
available. To that end, the WHCA has set up a website
(https://mightybell.com/communities/whca-crowchildtrail) where all updates, thoughts and progress will be
shared. Links from the WHCA’s website and FaceBook
page will redirect all those interested to the above URL.
Also, updates can be found in the Warbler.
For those who would like to get involved directly,
the WHCA has setup the Crowchild Transportation
Committee to focus solely on this issue. All interested
are asked to email TRAFFIC@WESTHILLHURST.COM.
So what happens at the end of 2016 if a decision
is made? Is there any money to fund the Plan’s
recommendations?
In short, no - not yet. However, conducting the study
now will allow The City to prioritize and plan for future
transportation infrastructure projects through the 10year Investing in Mobility plan.
What can we do about it right now?
As mentioned, we are in the very early stages of this
process. Continue to check out the WHCA’s Crowchild
website (mightybell.com/communities/whcacrowchild-trail) for updates.
Thanks for your attention to what will be a very
important issue.
A father Emperor penguin withstands the Antarctic cold for 60 days or more to protect his
eggs, which he keeps on his feet, covered with a feathered flap. During this entire time he
doesn't eat a thing. Most father penguins lose about 25 pounds while they wait for their
babies to hatch. Afterward, they feed the chicks a special liquid from their throats. When
the mother penguins return to care for the young, the fathers go to sea to eat and rest.

Queen Elizabeth School News
New Equipment & Resources for Healthy Minds &
Bodies
The students at Queen Elizabeth Elementary have kept
busy over the last few months with swimming, the
annual winter walk, pajama day and so much more.
Students have been enjoying much-needed new physed equipment, recently purchased with funds raised
through our casino participation. New equipment
includes scooters, skip balls, cup balls, basketballs, and
other equipment that encourage a fun, healthy and
active lifestyle.
Casino funds and funds from other School Council
fundraising efforts, such as Pizza Day and Book Fair,
have also been used to purchase a class set of laptops,
a new server, home reading resources, artist residencies
and more. Funds raised also help to subsidize activities
such as Outdoor School and field trip transportation.
With a growing student population – we already have
over 50 students registered for kindergarten! -- and
uncertain provincial resources, the activities of the
Queen Elizabeth Elementary School Council and QEEPES
are more important than ever. From time to time, you
may hear about an opportunity for you to support
your local school. Your contributions and support are
gratefully accepted.

Extracurricular Activities
Teachers have organized a number of fantastic clubs
for kids over the lunch hour and after school. Students
can choose from: choir, Green Elizabeth, dance & flag
club, yearbook, math, Girl Power / Good Guys, and
intramurals. As well, twenty grade 4 – 6 students have
applied to attend the Young Writers’ Conference at
the end of April and two of our teachers are helping
successful candidates prepare.
Parents as Partners Technology Night
On March 5th, Queen Elizabeth Elementary hosted its first
Parents as Partners Technology Night. This evening was
full of information and exploration, with topics ranging
from digital citizenship to the school’s new blogging
platform, blogability.ca. Parent interest was high and,
although students did not attend this evening, their
excitement in learning new technology is evident in the
classroom.

Is your Child Ready for Preschool?
Having a new baby is such a joyous time, full of so many
milestones – the first snuggle, first solid foods, first steps,
first class... As your child grows from being a toddler to
an energetic three year old, you may be considering
sending him/her to preschool for the first time. But how
do you know they are ready? Here are a few things to
consider in the decision:
•
Is your child independent? Putting on a jacket
by themselves, going potty on their own, having
a snack or washing hands are all examples of
independent behaviour age-appropriate for
a 3 year old. Also consider the time they have
spent apart from you and whether preschool is
something they would be comfortable doing
independent of their parents.
•
Is he/she ready to participate in a group? While
children at this age are still engaging in “parallel
play” (play along-side another child), your child
may be showing social signs where they want to
play with other children. Many preschool activities
allow children to participate at the same time,
allowing them to interact and learn together during
things like circle time and interactive centres
•
Is your child able to keep a regular schedule? Many
children feel most comfortable when they keep a
predictable routine. Similarly, preschools usually
follow an active schedule so that children know
what to expect during their time there - establishing
one beforehand will make the transition easier.
•
Is your child inquisitive? Has he/she started
questioning the world around him? As your child
grows, so does his/her brain and how it’s able
to process new details and knowledge. As their
curiosity grows, preschool can be a great tool to
seek new information and support your child’s
cognitive development.
What are your reasons for preschool? Whether it’s
to give yourself a few hours of extra time per week,
prepare your child for school or to give him/her
an outlet to explore, think about why you wish to
send them to preschool. While it does allows your
child to expand their social horizons and learn new
things in a positive, caring environment, it is not
the only option (ex - care from relatives, play dates,
organized activities)
Before making any decisions, remember that you
don’t need positive responses to all of these questions
to determine “preschool readiness”. Many items like
socialization, routine, cognitive development and
physical fitness can also be learned within the classroom
when the school year begins.
When you are ready, please consider your local WHCA
Preschool. Public Registration for the 2015/2016 year
begins March 3rd at 8:00am. Additional details at: www.

Crystals have been used for
over 5,000 years to enhance
physical, emotional and
spiritual balance. Ancient
cultures used them as amulets, protection, drinking
vessels, healing tools, and
even crushed for eye shadow. Today they are used for
helping with balance, harmony, healing, protection,
inspiration, energy blocks, as well as a multitude of diseases. The reason crystals work well for healing is their
crystalline structure harmonizes with the crystalline
structure within our own bodies, the two energies coming together help create a shift for healing to happen.
Crystals are not meant to take the place of a doctor’s
advice or treatment but can work together and support
the healing process. They also beautify and work within
our homes and sacred spaces while cleansing and purifying the environment within that space.
We have a large selection and a wonderful variety of
hand selected crystals from common to rare, tumbled
stones, palm stones, spheres, wands, points, generators,
mineral specimens and large beautifully carved pieces.
Our informative classes detail the many aspects of how
crystals can help in our daily lives, how to use them in
healing practices and how to connect with them on a
deep personal level.
Enter our store to experience the feelings of peace, tranquility and reverences that will make you want to linger
and ponder your possibilities. We invite you to come
and have the Soul Food Crystals & Books experience.

Cybersafe Early Years
It is impossible to ignore any longer, and vital to prepare
kids at an early age to be cyber safe. The Internet is a
place, not a thing. With the increasing use of tablets,
mobile games, learning software and eBook readers,
parents and schools are turning to the Internet as a
teaching tool, with many kids starting as young as
preschool. The early years is the best time to begin to
lay the foundation of what safe online behavior is, how

Centre Street LRT and Crowchild Trail Updates
There are two massive transportation studies currently
underway that, when built, will greatly effect most of Ward 7:
North Central Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the Green Line
RouteAhead, Calgary Transit’s 30-year plan, proposed the
Green Line LRT route to run from North Pointe in the northeast
all the way to Seton in the southeast. In January, City Council
approved Centre Street as the alignment for the North Central
portion of the line. The route selection process involved
extensive public engagement over 18 months.
Centre Street is Calgary’s busiest bus route. Current counts
of 35,000 daily trips (the same as the West LRT) are expected
to increase to 60,000 to 70,000 trips over the next 60 years.
It became clear through the analysis that providing LRT up
Centre Street would deliver transit service to more Calgarians
and become our busiest train route.
The next step will be to determine the route into and through
the downtown – a complicated endeavour due to the hill and
the river. Planners are exploring four scenarios, from surface
rail, to deep tunnelling, to elevated rail, or a combination of all
three. Designers will continue to engage communities along
the route plus refine project costs for the four options. For
more information visit www.calgarytransit.com/nclrt or follow
@RouteAhead on Twitter.
Crowchild Trail Corridor Study Reboots
After the original Crowchild Trail Corridor Study plan met with
major public opposition, Druh recommended that the planners
go back to the drawing board. Over the past year, they have
been working with the public to rethink the planning rationale
for major transportation routes within and through established
neighbourhoods. Now that the background work is complete,
The City is ready to restart the Crowchild Trail Corridor study
process. The study will include recommendations on how
Crowchild Trail, from 24 Avenue NW to 17 Avenue SW, can
be improved over time, including short-term and long-term
upgrades needed to move high traffic volumes. There is also
a new focus on supporting all modes of travel and minimizing
impacts to adjacent neighbourhoods.
We will invite Calgarians to participate in each phase of the
project. Once the plans are complete in late 2016, construction
projects will proceed based on need and available funding.
