Vol. VII, No. 9 March 5, 2015 Dr. Anderson to speak today on President Theodore Roosevelt The Bladen Community College History Club will present a program entitled “Before Made Men: Theodore Roosevelt as a Progressive Era Advertising Icon,” today, March 5, at 11 a.m. in the Teaching Auditorium located in Building 17. The presenter will be Dr. Ryan Anderson, a faculty member and research historian at University of North Carolina - Pembroke. Dr. Anderson serves as Associate Professor of History and the Coordinator of the American Studies Program at the University of North Carolina Pembroke. He teaches classes on the Great Depression, the Gilded Age, what it means to grow up in America, the meaning of manliness in America, and the history of rock and roll. He is currently engaged in scholarly research for a forthcoming book entitled Merry’s Flock and the Creation of AllAmerican Boyhood, which is slated to be published by the University of Arkansas Press. Dr. Anhderson has been a member of the Pembroke Undergraduate Research and Creativity Center Council for seven years and has been active in all its programs. Dr. Ryan Anderson From the office of the Executive Vice President The North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) is conducting several webinars this spring to assist colleges in meeting performance measures. The webinars are a time for high performing colleges to share best practices and success strategies with colleges throughout the state. Ms. Twyla Davis has been busy orchestrating the webinars for Bladen Community College personnel this semester. The first webinar was held on February 4 and dealt with Performance Measure A and B “Basic Skills Student Progress and GED Passing Rate”. Subsequent webinars were held on the following dates and covered the following performance measures: February 11, C and D – “Developmental Student Success Rate in College-Level Math and English Courses”; February 25, “Licensure and Certification Passing Rate”; and March 4, H – “College Transfer Performance”. The last performance measure webinar will be held on March 25 and will cover “First Year Progression”. Webinars will be presented again during the month of April. If you were unable to attend one of the above webinars that pertains to you please speak with Ms. Davis to determine when the second webinar will be held in the month of April. NCCCS will host a Performance Measure Summit on July 28 at the Embassy Suites in Cary. Thusly, he is a familiar face even though he may not remember all of the faces he sees over the course of a semester. The registrar position changed his role with the college significantly and required him to adapt to a very different type of work than he had previously done. A Bladen County resident most of his life and graduate of Bladenboro High School, he attended Bladen Community College where he earned an Associate of Applied Science in Information Technology. He also has an associate degree in electronics technology from Southeastern Community College and a Bachelor of Science in Management and Organizational Development from Mt. Olive College. His working life has been mostly in industrial electronics and information technology. He has extensive experience in both computer hardware and software and more than 20 years experience in web design. He worked in private industry for more than 25 years prior to coming to BCC in a full-time capacity in 2011. He was initially hired as the college’s webmaster in March 2011. However, he taught some curriculum and continuing education courses on a part-time basis in 2006 - 2007. He says the registrar’s job has required him to learn a whole new set of skills in the academic arena. The registrar’s job is to ensure the college is in compliance with its academic practices. Mr. Bryan is also a bi-vocational pastor. He is currently the pastor of Briar Branch Baptist Church. He is married to BCC Business Department Chair Lee Anne Bryan and the couple make their home in Bladenboro. Sharron Thomas 879.5532 The swimming Finn is back in the water for Foundation The “Swimming Finn”, better known as BCC Human Resources Director Tiina Mundy, is back in the water again swimming to raise funds for the Bladen Community College Foundation. With a “new hip” and renewed vigor, she’s intent on exceeding her previous accomplishments in another virtual 100-mile swim. She is challenging her friends to support her in this endeavor by pledging 25 or 50 cents per mile or perhaps even $1 per mile to support educational opportunities for BCC students through the BCC Foundation. Called the Finn Swim Challenge, this time the virtual 100 mile swim will be along the South Carolina coast. Tiina hopes her efforts will endow the Finn Swim scholarship. In the previous challenge, the effort raised $8,000. A minimum of $10,000 is required to endow the scholarship. To pledge to the cause, call or email Foundation Director Linda Burney at 879.5519. The grant that funds the certification examinations is available for this fiscal year. It provides the opportunity for certification in Microsoft Office Excel 2013, Microsoft Office Word 2013, Microsoft Office Powerpoint 2013, Microsoft Office Access 2013 and Microsoft Office Outlook 2013. During last fiscal year 13 BCC faculty, staff and students earned certification in one or more of the areas. BCC Human Resources Director Tiina Mundy, aka The Swimming Finn, has completed her virtual 100-mile swim along the South Carolina coast. She swam the last leg on Wednesday morning. The above balloons were given to her to commemorate the occasion. Called the Finn-Swim Challenge, the purpose of the endeavor was to raise funds for a scholarship established by the Bladen Community College Foundation. Last year, Ms. Mundy came very close to raising enough to endow the scholarship. According to Foundation Director Linda Burney, the challenge will raise sufficient funds complete the endowment. She points out, however, that the foundation is still accepting donations to the cause. Eat Smart Move More Weigh Less A new session of Eat Smart Move More Weigh Less will begin on Wednesday, February 18 at 12 noon in the King Allied Health Building Conference Room.
