M.E.McKeown School http:/www.mckeown .org March 4, 2015 Spring Countdown Spring Arrives in 16 Days! (March 20th) Teacher In Service on Monday, March 16th! There will be a 12:40 pm dismissal for all students! FROM THE DESK OF THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL: Dear Parents and Guardians, The day has arrived and PARCC testing is officially off the ground. Regardless of how we feel about the test, it is here. In viewing the opening days, it would be hard to put into words how proud we are of our fantastic McKeown students! They have handled the first days admirably. They have been working hard and putting their best feet forward and that is all we can ask. Just a few test-taking tips to keep in mind moving forward: 1) Get a good night’s sleep. 2) Eat a well-balanced breakfast. 3) Don’t stress…just do your best. I know I speak for our entire staff in applauding the efforts of our students…keep up the great work everybody! DELGROSSO FROM THE DESK OF A SIXTH GRADE TEACHER: The days and weeks in sixth grade seem to be passing by all too quickly. Last Friday, our students had the optional opportunity to attend 6th Grade Activity Night at KRHS. This is a great opportunity to meet students from the other sending districts of Fredon, Stillwater, and Sandyston-Walpack or to just hang out with your friends. Activity Night includes volleyball, California kickball, swimming and other games. Ms. Crane, Mr. Wilpert, and Mr. Valente also attended Activity Night. Currently, In Science, Mr. Weissman is having the Periodic Table of Elements Bee, or for short, we just say Element Bee. Each learning group had an element bee in their classes and the top winners from each group moved on to the final bee. On Monday, our top ten winners so far made it through the first three rounds. During the last ten minutes of our lunch period for the rest of the week, these students will compete. Mr. Weissman commented on Monday that this is the first time in 21 years that all the finalists made it through the first three rounds. These students are well prepared. The ten finalists in the element bee are John Brownlee, Justin Brownlee, Hannah Calderon, Abby Casario, Jackson Crawn, Brynn Goldberg, James Lobb, Dakota Mailoux, Ayva Torppey, and Lauren Wrigley. Brianna Batta was also a finalist. However, she was unable to compete due to a previous commitment. Good luck to all of them. We will see who will be eliminated and who will be the last ones standing. Quick update: On Tuesday, five students were eliminated. Left in the Element Bee are John Brownlee, Hannah Calderon, Abby Casario, Brynn Goldberg, and Lauren Wrigley. On Monday evening our District Chorus and District Band students had their concert at KRHS. We are very proud of our sixth graders. Thank you to Mrs. Sparta, Mrs. Guest, and Mr. Ebbels for preparing our students well. We had 24 fifth and sixth grade students in the Chorus and 15 fifth and sixth grade students in the Band. This is a credit to the strength of our Music teachers and programs here at McKeown. We had fun participating in the Love of Reading Week last week. The students got involved in decorating their classroom doors. They did a great job! There were some artistic talents displayed that we don’t see every day. Also, last week during the Love of Reading week, out Enthusiastic Reader for sixth grade was announced. Caley Cortezano is our Enthusiastic Reader for sixth grade. We look forward to two more special sixth grade activities. In April, we will go to the Buehler Challenger Center on the campus of Bergen County Community College for a Mission to Mars, and in May, we will go to Medeival Times as a culminating activity to our Social Studies unit on the Middle Ages. In the meantime, we are busy learning and studying in all our subject areas. So, as you can see, the life of a sixth grader is very busy.
