THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
MARCH 8, 2015
The law liberates and leads us to freedom (1).
It is to be trusted for it is a source of wisdom (Ps).
Jesus speaks of the ultimate freedom
to be won for us by his being raised up (3).
He is the sign of the power and wisdom of God (2).
Thought for the Day
THE PATH TO FREEDOM
Most of us, if we were asked “Does the phrase ‘the Ten
Commandments’ appear in the Bible?” would likely get it
wrong, because the answer is “no.” “The Ten
Commandments” is a post-biblical, phrase that developed
along with an image of God as police officer that is not
found in today’s passage from Exodus. The first phrase is the
key: God is the one who brings us out of slavery; following
God’s law or commands is our path to freedom. The
moneychangers whom Jesus drove from the temple were not
explicitly breaking any of the commandments, but neither
were they helping people to find God’s path to freedom as
they came to worship at the temple. This is an important
Lenten lesson for us. We need to stop asking ourselves
whether or not we are breaking specific rules or regulations
and instead examine our lives to see if we are truly following
a path to God’s freedom through Christ.

2ND COLLECTION, CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES, MAR 14-15
Next weekend’s second collection is for Catholic Relief Services.
THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU
Has it been a while that you have felt
spiritually free? This week we continue the
“The Light is On for You” Lenten initiative. During Lent,
every Catholic Church throughout the County of Santa Clara,
including our own, will offer the Sacrament of
Reconciliation on Wednesday (March 11) evenings from 6-8
pm. To find confession times at other Churches and for
additional resources visit www.dsj.org/light
STATIONS OF THE CROSS & LENTEN SOUP DINNER
The Stations of the Cross will continue to be held
in the Church every Friday in Lent. Our journey
through the Stations remains a reminder of
Christ’s Passion and we follow in His steps to
recall His suffering and death for us. This Friday, March 13,
the Stations will be led by Fil-Am members at 6:15 pm and
the Soup Supper at 6:45 pm will be provided by them as
well. The Soup Supper will be free but a donation will be
gratefully accepted.

FAITH FORMATION NEWS
Reflecting on Sunday’s Readings for yourself or as a
family from Our Sunday Visitor.
3rd Sunday of Lent.
Theme: We must do what God wants.
Breaking Open the Word
Suggested text for faith sharing: Today’s First Reading from
Exodus, the short version
Step One: Listen to the Word
What in this reading touches you? What line or word in this
reading caught your ear?
Step Two: Look into Your Life
Question for Children: Share one way in which you “honor your
father and mother.”
Question for Youth: Jesus was angry – as we all get at times. When
is your anger a good thing? When is it not?
Question for Adults: As you hear the Commandments proclaimed
today, which one of them really strikes you?
