It was our big day of Read Across America, as well as Green Eggs and Ham. Riverview Bank and Beaches Restaurant provided the food and books for all of our first grade students! We had approximately forty volunteers who were willing to go into our classrooms to read to the students, regardless of grade level. It was incredible to see the volunteers captivating our kindergarten through fifth grade students by reading Dr. Seuss stories. In addition, there were approximately 70 parents/guests who came to experience the wonders of….green eggs and ham! The students had giant smiles on their faces as they tried their first bite of this infamous concoction. The collaboration of our staff, students and community members to create positive memories in our building demonstrates the ability of individuals to work together for the good of the whole. Thank you for providing support for this special day at Eisenhower. These forms are available in all school offices. DON’T FALL BEHIND SPRING FORWARD INSTEAD! If you have an in-district boundary transfer to Eisenhower this year, it MUST be renewed every year. Remember to set your clocks ahead one hour! Daylight Saving Time Begins Sunday March 8th Out of district requests will be Available after May 1, 2015. NO PETS PLEASE We are asking that parents/guardians who are picking their students up at the end of the day leave their dog(s) at home. This includes dogs on leashes, puppies held in the arms of its owner, or dogs tucked in a bag or purse. Dogs are wonderful pets, however the added excitement of “Fido” on campus at the end of the day typically delays the student of getting to their final destination quickly and efficiently. Also, our students often don’t know that they shouldn’t approach an unfamiliar dog and will often walk up to the dog and attempt to pet him/her. This puts the dog, you and the student in a vulnerable position. Thank you for your support with this request. MORE LOST THAN FOUND Please make sure to check the lost and found for any articles of clothing that may not have made it home with your student. Any items, which have not been claimed will be donated on Friday April 3rd. Also please be sure to come by the office. We have several small articles that are just waiting to be claimed. Please share this with your emergency contacts , such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. that might be picking up your student(s). District Attendance Procedures If your student is absent, a parent/guardian must contact the school by phone, email or note to excuse the absence within 3 school days after returning to school. Students with unexcused absences are considered truant. After 2 or more consecutive unexcused absences in a month you will be contacted. If your student is ill for 6 consecutive days, a note from a doctor is required to excuse the absence. If a student must leave early from school, he/she must bring a note from a parent/guardian and take it directly to the office in the morning. After 5 unexcused absences in a month, the student will be referred to a Truancy Officer. Anytime a student misses school, the reason must be communicated to the office through one of the following methods: Note sent into school with student before he/she is absent or when the student returns. Call the attendance line at 313-1404 E-mail to donna.cossette@vansd.org VPS EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Vancouver Public School currently has openings for substitute: teachers, paraeducators, nutrition food services, and bus drivers. Tour Thomas Jefferson and McLoughlin Middle School On Friday, March 13, Vancouver Public Schools Superintendent Steve Webb will host his last patron tour of the 2014-2015 school year. The tour will provide an in-depth look at the dynamic learning opportunities at Thomas Jefferson and McLoughlin middle schools. Both schools will showcase applications of the district’s strategic plan, Design II, and commitment to preparing students for college, careers and life. Visitors will explore the technology-rich environment in which Jefferson and McLoughlin students are taught and learn on one-to-one iPads and laptops. They’ll also see the schools’ Gateway to Technology project-based science, math and technology classes and Advancement Via Individual Determination, a college-readiness program. The tour of McLoughlin will provide a glimpse of the school’s Family-Community Resource Center and community partnerships. At Jefferson, tour-goers can discover Honors classes, as well as the school’s commitment to teaching positive, respectful behaviors. The free tour will begin and end at the Bates Center for Educational Leadership, 2921 Falk Rd. The tour starts at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m. After visiting McLoughlin and Thomas Jefferson, guests have the option of enjoying a student musical performance and a delicious lunch prepared by culinary arts students. Lunch is available for $4 per person. Everyone is welcome, but space is limited. Visit www.vansd.org/PatronTours or contact Sue Knable at 360-313-4720 to sign up. We hope to see you on March 13! th A NOTE FROM THE NURSE Attention 5 Grade parents: It’s already that time to start thinking ahead to middle school! All 11 year old, 6th grade students are required, by state law, to have a Tdap vaccine before they can start middle school. If your 5th grader is already 11 years old, it may be a good idea to call your child’s medical provider to schedule an appointment. If they are still 10, it’s a good idea to make the call to schedule an appointment for after their 11th birthday. (Hint: Don’t wait until right before school starts! August is very busy for the medical providers as every incoming kindergartner and 6th grader will need immunizations - if you wait, you might not get an appointment!) When they get the shot, please bring in the proof of immunizations to the office and we will update our records. If you have questions or concerns, I can be reached at tracy.thun@vansd.org or call the school’s office. Thank you! Your School Nurse, Tracy Thun, RN
