RAMANATHAN - 26 Most persons in the film industry, whether they are actors, screenwriters, music composers or whatever, are often tempted to try their hand in film production which is a different ball game with its own ruleswhich are not clearly defined even today. As somebody commented, film production is a gamble and no one knows whether a particular film will do well at the box office or notand bring home the moolah or the bacon. The celebrated Hollywood movie mogul Harry Cohn, the boss of Columbia Pictures, was once asked by a critic whether there was any formula to predict the success at the box office for a movie. With his characteristic cynical sense of humour and rugged common sense, he said that only two people could predict the success of a film. First, a producer who can make his film a success by buying up all the tickets for all the shows in the world! Second, the biggest idiot in Christendom can do it! There is considerable wisdom in ‘King’ Cohn’s dictum! The Tamil moviemusic charmer G. Ramanathan was also tempted to try his hand in film production and promoted a company under the name and style of Sarovodaya Productions. He made ‘Pudhu Vaazhvu’ (1957)as his first film with M. K. T. Bhagavathar in the lead. Expectedly, Ramanathan composed the music along with C. N. Pandurangam who had been active as a music composer for some time. The story and dialogues were written by the oldtimer and top screenwriter of Tamil cinema, Elangovan who had written hits for Bhagavathar, A. K. Velanand others earlier. Lyrics were written by Papanasam Sivan, Thanjai Ramaiah Das, A. Marudhakasi, Nataraja Sundaram and Saravanabhavananda. Also songs of Jothi Ramalinga Swamigal and Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiyar were added. Expectedly Bhagavathar sang most of the songs as solo and as duets with P. Leela. In one song, somewhat interestingly, Jikki sang along with Bhagavathar. (Radha)Jayalakshmi also sang a solo song. The film was photographed by the well-known lensman of the day R. Sampath while Hiralal, Sohanlal and Madhavan composed the dances. Bhagavathar’s brother M. K. Shanmugam was in charge of the production and the film was shot at Newtone Studios. Surprisingly, Bhagavathar directed the movie with hardly any experience in that technique. The film had many melodious songs, mostly rendered by Thyagaraja Bhagavathar. There were song and dance sequences for which he sang for Kumari Thulasi and Madhuri Deviand, for another song, Lalitha danced. The famous Bharathiyar song ‘Sutrum vizhi sudar thaan Kannamma’ was rendered as a raagamaalika by Bhagavathar in his characteristic melodious style and verve. The song was a hit and sold well as gramophone disc or ‘plate’ as it was known in those days. Somewhat interestingly, Bhagavathar sang a short song in which he combined lines from popular melodies of earlier years in Hindi which included ‘Aawara hoon’ (from Raj Kapoor’s classic ‘Aawara‘), ’Dadada dadada’ (from the hit movie ‘Ek Thi Ladki’with the top star of his dayMotilal and Meenakshi. This song was a super hit and gave rise to the expression ‘Dappa Sangeetham’). Bhagavathar’s singing such a song surprised his ardent fans and even critics. The story was somewhat predictable about Vaikuntam (MKT) living in a village singing and in love with Nagammal (Lalitha). Her brother did not like the budding romance and one day he ties him up to a tree. Going along that way, a rich woman Subha (Madhuri Devi) saves him. Drawn to him, she takes him to the city where she promotes him as a singer under a new name ‘Geethamani’, gathering fame and fortune. He forgets his past blinded by the good fortune and fame and insults his aged poor parents and calls them beggars. Nagammal too is shocked and tries to commit suicide by jumping into a river. However soon Geethamani realises his mistakes. How he is reconciled with his parents and Nagamani formed the rest of the story and film. Krishnan and Mathuram expectedly sing a comical duet. In spite of the melodious songs excellently rendered by Bhagavathar, the film flopped at the box office, landing Ramanathan in huge monetary loss. Songs from this movie are worth listening to even after more than a half-century. Unfortunately, none of the films Bhagavathar made after his release from prison as an echo of the sensational Lakshmikantham Murder Case fared well at the box-office. SADANAND KEJRIWAL IN BENGALURU For naturopathy, Bengaluru is the new, fancy indigenous capital as diagnosed by the muffler-man of Delhi State which was swept by the fledgling AAP in its second coming. The triumvirate of Aravind, Yogendra and Prashanth seemed attuned to a new thrust gauged by their storming of the polls leaving a miserly three seats to others. But even after rising from the ashes, the AAP doesn’t seem to have risen above internal squabbles that threaten to weaken their Valentine Day pledge to the people of Delhi after having broken off with them and dissolving the loose-mixed government on the previous Valentine Day in 2014 after a brief, intense 49 day love affair! But Kejriwal, the chief, this time too fell a victim to the inclement Delhi winter that pierced his muffler, leaving him with a persistent cough that rendered him speechless. It seems a peculiar curse that Kejriwal is not able to keep infections at bay. The decision to go down to the benevolent South to oust the thunder-causing element from his system should be the precursor to many great revolutionary attempts that he would launch, once his patented cap does not get blown off by the cough barrage. And while getting rid of the niggling irritants in his throat, he seems to have neatly avoided looking his erstwhile friends and co-founders of his party, Yogendra and Prashanth, in the eye while the executive committee relieved them of their posts. The broom seems to have a lot to sweep under the carpet! When the kind Bengaluru rids Kejri of his cough and he returns to the capital and his office as the chief, his contingent of enthusiastic followers, meanwhile having used the brooms to Swaach Delhi and its environs of corruption, we the people of India may find the Kejri-way to health, wealth and happiness, the best natural cure for our sick society’s ills, geographical borders notwithstanding. And who knows: perhaps we may also hit pay dirt by finding the mysteriously missing Rahul Gandhi “introspecting” upon the size zero result of his party in the Delhi polls at the same Naturopathy centre in Bengaluru! Maybe Kejri and Rahul will meet over a herbal Chai Pe Charcha and Rahul Baba may come away from the meet wiser on how to win at least one seat in an election and also how to cleverly use a cough as a punctuation while making a speech!! LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Auto driver harasses old lady Sir, The other day, my friend was privy to an incident when an old lady was trying to catch an auto near Sharma Park (Habibullah Road) to visit a temple a kilometer away. When she stopped an empty auto, the driver demanded Rs. 70. When she told him to charge as per meter, he refused. Seeing the plight of the lady my friend tried to help her. When he warned the driver that he will lodge a complaint with the police, the driver was least bothered and instead said that he too had connections in the police. The driver also had the audacity in not allowing the old lady to hire other autos by shooing away the vehicles and threatening those drivers. Finally after close to 15 minutes, the driver drove away and the old lady managed to find an auto that agreed to charge as per the meter. – V.N.S. Jayaraman, Motilal Street, T. Nagar Demand to turn Usman Road service lane into an auto stand unwarranted Sir, This refers to the road roko resorted to by auto-rickshaw drivers outside R1 Mambalam Police Station, T. Nagar, last week demanding that they be permitted to park their vehicles along Usman Road service lanes and close it to vehicular traffic. Even at present, a number of auto drivers are misusing the eastern side service lane of Usman Road for parking their vehicles. By resorting to road roko, the drivers are only trying to get an official sanction. The service lanes are already narrow and if autos are allowed to park on them it will cause heavy traffic jams and also cause hardship to pedestrians. Further, if the service lanes are closed to vehicular traffic to enable parking of autos and private vehicles (as demanded by the auto drivers), the residents of the side streets will be put to untold hardship, for they will have to take detours to reach their homes. As it is, the western end of the service lane is encroached upon by roadside vendors preventing vehicular movement. The encroachment on this lane is such that even walking has become impossible. The residents of side streets of the western end service lane are facing acute problems because of the encroachment. The demand by the auto drivers is unfair and should not be conceded to.— K. Sreenivasan, 16, Ramaswamy Street, T. Nagar Say no to extortion by LPG delivery men Sir, It is a standard norm to tip the LPG delivery person more out of goodwill. The amount of tip is up to the consumer and the delivery person has no right of demand. The other day the delivery person demanded Rs. 40 as tip for delivering the refill to my neighbour and refused to accept anything less. He also threatened that if he was not paid the demanded amount, he will cause difficultly in future refills. My neighbour rightly refused to pay any tip Houseowners and lodged a complaint with the area manager looking for tenants? of the oil company. The matter was later sorted Advertise in the out in favour of the consumer. Such incidents Classified Column are common place and many a consumer falls of Mambalam prey to the demands of the delivery man.—V.S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar Times!
