A pathway to
breaking drug addictions
Clinicians in the drug and alcohol unit at St John of
God Richmond Hospital have observed an increase
in admissions, male and female, for treatment for
addiction to “ice”, alcohol and other drugs. What
often presents to the GP as a mental health disorders
like psychosis, anxiety and depression, often leads to
diagnoses of drug abuse and addiction and a need
for an admission to a Drug and Alcohol unit that can
manage the clients complex needs.

It’s a frighteningly common journey that starts
with heavy social drinking and often leads to
experimentation with recreational drugs like
marijuana, amphetamines and cocaine. Dabbling
quickly develops into dependence, and possible
complications such as paranoia and psychosis.
SAVE THE DATE
The first port of call is the GP practice for families
and friends seeking support and for their loved ones
with addictions. The challenge for GPs is, to refer
patients to a Psychiatrist who has links facilities,
programs and medical support that will help
streamline patient care.
St John of God Richmond Hospital provides
that expertise, support and programs for patients
particularly in the specialised areas of gambling,
drug, alcohol and substance abuse.
