How
retirement
will look in
2015
From April 2015, we will
see more freedom in ways
people can take their pension benefits when they
reach 55. These changes
could radically alter your
plans for retirement. Few
would vote against choice
and flexibility for their
pension, but what do the
changes mean if you are
planning your retirement?
In theory, the flexibility
will allow you to treat
your pension fund in the
same way as any other
investment: you will be
able to take withdrawals
whenever you want.
From April 2015, if you
are a member of a defined contribution pension
scheme and aged 55 or
over, you will be able to
draw money from it as you
see fit. You can receive a
tax free cash sum of up to 25% of the amount you take, then you will have the
freedom to access some or all of the remaining fund as income, taxable at your
marginal rate of income tax. So if you want to access all of the money from
your pension, you will be able to take it as a lump sum.
As tempting as it sounds to get hold of your money when you want it, in
practice, the tax treatment may discourage you from extracting large sums in a
single year. So unless you really need the extra income, you may want to withdraw your pension savings at a slower rate that is more tax-efficient.
Although the new pension freedoms mean you will no longer be compelled

to buy an annuity, if you are
looking to secure a guaranteed
income for the rest of your
life, an annuity will still be
an appropriate option for you,
especially as it’s impossible to tell
how long you will live.
Guidance or advice?
From April 2015, the government will introduce a new right
to impartial financial guidance at
the point of retirement, for anyone
with a defined contribution pension scheme. The guidance will
be delivered through the Pensions
Advisory Service and the Citizens
Advice Bureau. But it’s important
to understand that what will be on
offer is just guidance – not advice
- so while guidance will explain
the impact of these new rules and
let you know what you could do,
it won’t tell you what you should
do. Advice, therefore, remains
essential.

FRIENDS OF
MEADOW
PARK
We seem to have had a very erratic winter,
but on the whole milder than usual, so there
may soon be evidence of spring regeneration
in the park, with bright celandine in the hedge
bottoms and blackbirds digging among new
nettle shoots for nest material – yes, please!
After a meagre turn-out for our January work
session (probably in part due to the coughs and
colds which assailed so many of us), we had a
creditable ten volunteers in February. Working
in Hall Field, we created a scallop in the northern boundary path to open up a piece of grassland and also cut back a large amount of thorn
and dogwood, but as Hall Field is the birds’
favourite place, we were careful, as always,
not to encroach on the dense central area where
they will be nesting.
In March, we shall be digging out an extension to the “Bee Worlds” in Bateman Field, and
coppicing hazel trees, mostly in Gibson’s Field.
Anyone over 16 can be a volunteer and join in
with our activities – we’d love to have more

muscle power! Just meet at 9.50am

Saturday in the month – next will
be 14 March and 11 April - and for
insurance purposes you have to be

which lasts a year, and you can join
on the day.
What to look for in Meadow Park in
January
For those unfamiliar with Meadow
Park, maps, giving the names of the
fields, are found just inside the three
main entrances.
Our two black notice boards (at the
Manor Farm Meadow and the Bateman Road entrances) carry a variety
of information about the park. This
is a dormant time for trees and wild
flowers, so there will be nothing
showy to see. Almost the only plant
that flowers for twelve months of the
year is the white dead nettle, so you
might catch sight of that.
For information about the Friends
of Meadow Park, contact our secretary via the Parish office (tel 01509
852217) or by e-mail at meadowpark@eastleake.net. You will find
reports of our activities on the village website (www.east-leake.co.uk)

prevention advice:
Ensure your vehicle is locked and secure.
Don’t leave valuables on show in your vehicle. That old coat on the back seat
may be worthless, but a thief won't know that or that the pockets are empty.
Don’t leave your wallet or mobile phone in your car even if you’re just nipping somewhere for a few minutes. It only takes a thief seconds!

than humans at processing and eliminating theobromine in the body, and
therefore are much more sensitive to its
effects. Theobromine is from the same
class of chemicals as Caffeine, and so
the side-effects of the toxin are quite
similar. As you would expect, the sideeffects are dose-dependent, so chocolate
with a higher theobromine content is
going to have a more serious effect, especially if consumed in large amounts.
Dark chocolate has the highest theobromine content, followed by milk chocolate and then white chocolate.

Of dogs that eat chocolate
only about 50% become
ill, and most have an upset
stomach and develop
vomiting or diarrhoea (or
both!). Although unpleasant, vomiting is a good
way of eliminating the
toxin and preventing absorption which stops more
serious side-effects from
occurring. In severe cases
of chocolate toxicity, some
dogs can develop neurological symptoms (including
restlessness, aggression, or
balance problems), heart
problems (increased heart
rate, high blood pressure)
or abnormal muscular
activity (twitching, tremors
or even fitting). Although
this sounds alarming, these
cases are rare and death
from chocolate toxicity is
extremely uncommon.
So, the burning question
is how much chocolate is
too much chocolate? Well,
strictly speaking we should
avoid giving chocolate to
dogs at all. Apart from the
toxic element, chocolate
is high in fat and sugar
and has a negative impact
on dental health and the
afore-mentioned waistline!
In very small amounts,
there is not likely to be any
detrimental side-effects at
all, but in instances such as
the dog in question above,
where the Easter-egg stash
or similar is unexpectedly
raided, we suggest that you
contact your vet for advice.
We have recommended
guidelines that tell us how
much chocolate is likely to
be dangerous for your dog
(we calculate how much
toxin is likely to have been
ingested - this depends on
the type of chocolate eaten
and the size of your dog!)
and we can advise accordingly. Sometimes we
might need to make your
dog sick (if it hasn’t been
sick already!) and in more
severe cases, supportive
therapy and monitoring
The Olde Bakehouse Pet Shoppe
may be required.
Luckily, most owners
are aware of the danger
of chocolate to dogs and
keep it safely locked away
(in my case, mainly from
children and husband – but
also the dogs!). However,
dogs are dogs, and chocolate is tasty (and even the
foil wrappers don’t tend
to be too off-putting!) so I
know that this Easter (and
probably before!) we will
receive a few calls from
concerned dog-owners and
see a few chocolate-opportunists suffering the aftereffects of a chocolate raid!
