Louie Loves RFD-TV’s The American
By Hope Sickler
Countless hours of preparation and a lot of hard work had to
be put in to make the event of the year, exactly that; the rodeo
event of the year. RFD-TV’s The American is changing the way the
public looks at the sport of rodeo but even more, it’s changing the
game of rodeo for the ones who play, one of those being Oelrichs,
South Dakota cowgirl Lisa Lockhart.
Lockhart clenched the barrel racing title this year at RFD-TV’s
The American, not quite something she was expecting to do again,
after she won the title the year before at the very first The American. But her horse, An Oakie With Cash affectionately known in
the rodeo world as “Louie”, had other ideas of his own.
“Winning it last year was an absolute dream come true. I cannot
even put into words how I am feeling after winning The American
twice now,” explained Lockhart. “After seeing the list of the qualifiers that had qualified from the semi-finals, along with the top 10
best cowgirls and horses in the WPRA, my goal was to make it back
to the top 4 shoot-out round. I knew it was going to be extremely,
extremely tough and I knew I would have to bring my best to Arlington that day.”
Lockhart confessed that her two runs were kind of a blur due to
some nerves that she was experiencing right before her first run.
“Believe it or not, I was very nervous prior to our first run. I had
to tell myself to relax and just do what we came to do, which was to
make a nice smooth run and let the rest come together on its own,
but it was hard. My nerves were really getting to me but I think a lot
of it was an adrenaline rush as well as the nerves.”
Lockhart is known for entering the arena on Louie with such
poise and grace as she is rubbing the neck of her main mount and
most say she always looks locked on and ready to go, not nervous at
all. However, this time around, she was.
“It hard to deal with the pressure in a situation like that so I really
have to commend Chayni and Amberley, not only for each of their
amazing stories, but for what they had to deal with before their
runs. The publicity and nerves can be really tough but for them to
go in there and do what they did, my hat is off to them. They are
true champions in my eyes,” Lockhart said.
Lockhart explained that her two runs were good but she struggled with her start, or lack thereof.
“Louie was a little wound up at the gate so that made our start a
bit more difficult to conquer. Our timing was off in the first round
and we cut the first too close for comfort if you ask me,” laughed
Lockhart. “But after our first barrel, everything came together.
Louie felt sharp and precise in what he was doing and I really
couldn’t have asked him to perform any better than he did in both

our runs.”
Although winning RFD-TV’s The American was sweet in itself,
what made the win even more sweeter was having Lockhart’s
daughter, Alyssa, there to share not only the event, but the win with
her.
“It was so incredibly special to have Alyssa there with me this
year. I wish my husband and two boys could’ve been there as well
but having her there made the experience and win that much more
special to me.”
Lockhart shared that when she and Alyssa walked into the AT&T
Stadium in Arlington, seeing the look on Alyssa’s face when she
took it all in was priceless.
“Walking in and seeing her expression was worth a million to me.
Being there is much different than watching it on TV and I am so
glad that she was able to experience the real thing with me,” Lockhart shared.
Lockhart secured the win with her time of 14.726, while Kassidy
Dennison riding her Dash Ta Fame gelding, Sierra Hall Of Fame,
that helped her clench her first trip to the National Finals Rodeo
this past December was 2nd with a 14.979, good enough for a

Questions & Answers with the ERA
Q: What is the difference between ERA and other professional
rodeo associations?
A: ERA is a private company that is owned by the contestants and
future contestants. The business model is an ability driven format
that will involve only the top 1% of elite rodeo athletes in the
world. Other professional rodeo organizations are based on a format that is membership driven, volume based and open to all levels
of competition.
It is ERA’s mission to maximize professional rodeo at the elite
level, whereby it will benefit the entire rodeo industry by generating excitement for both rodeo fans and contestants. The athletes
involved in ERA are passionate about developing an organization
where future rodeo athletes will have a desirable career in professional rodeo.
Q: Will rodeo athletes stop competing in other professional rodeo
associations?
A: The ERA’s goal is to provide additional opportunities for professional rodeo athletes to enhance what is already in the professional
rodeo industry. Each rodeo contestant will have to decide his or her
own schedule and career path while competing.
Q: Will this association work like PBR?
A: There is commonality with the PBR structure in that it focuses
on the very best rodeo athletes in the world and has its own seasonlong tour ending with a World Championship Event. The ERA will
also have its own rules and regulations.
Q: What are the membership rules, how do you enter and qualify?
A: There will be a qualifying system announced, whereby anyone
finalized and will be released at a later date.
Q: Can you explain the Major Events Trust Fund Bill?
A: The ERA is in the process of selecting a World Championship
Event Site. Through that process, the State of Texas and other
states have various event funds to help generate economic impact
for their states and cities. Any funding from a state will be only
for the World Championship Event, which will bring a significant
economic impact to the city and state in which it is held.
Q: Where and when will the events occur?
A: The ERA Season will begin during the first quarter of 2016 and
its World Championship Event will take place November 2016. The
official schedule is being finalized and will be announced at a later
date.
Q: What events will be included in this new organization?
A: It is very important to the founding ERA members to ensure
the integrity of the sport of rodeo, which includes the traditional 7
events in rodeo.
Q: How will contestants earn ownership in the ERA?
A: The ERA will always be owned by its contestants. There is a system in place, which is based on their participation and performance
in the ERA. Based on the ERA world standings, current and future
athletes will have the ability to obtain stock in the company. The
overall goal is to create something greater for future generations of
rodeo athletes.
Cowboy Kid Saddles - Helping young riders learn the Basics
For young riders who are serious about competing, Cashel
Company introduces a line of saddles to help them in their chosen
discipline. Cowboy Kid® Saddles are designed specifically to help
keep them in a correct position, allowing them to focus on balance,
control, and the basics of their sport.
Five distinct saddles are available, with all the elements necessary
to excel.
The Barrel Racer features a deep seat pocket, prominent swells,
and horn that is easy for small hands to hold. For cutters, there is
a saddle with cutter seat, high cantle and taller swell. The Roper
keeps the rider in good position to deliver the loop, with a horn
that is easy to reach and just the right size for learning to dally. The
Rancher is tough enough for all day work with a comfortable seat
pocket and roping horn. The Wade is built for close contact with
the horse, with a larger horn diameter and traditional Wade style.
Perhaps the most interesting feature of Cowboy Kid Saddles is their
adaptability as the young rider grows. With fully adjustable stirrups
and the addition of a seat shrinker, you can start when kids wear
size 4 western jeans, and can keep the same saddle until size 14
Regular.

check worth $25,000. Streaking Ta Fame and rider Sharin Hall, the
only qualifier to make the finals out of over 1,200 entries, was third
in the final round with a time of 15.132. Michele McLeod and Kellies Chick, who ran the fastest time of the long go and the event, a
14.632, had some bad luck when they knocked the second barrel,
making their total time a 19.744.
Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of the entire event was
watching inspirational Utah cowgirl Amberley Snyder round the cloverleaf pattern aboard her horse ATP Power. Snyder was involved
in a car accident in 2010 which left her paralyzed from the waist
down. Doctors told her she would never be able to ride and her
rodeo career was over. A year and a half later Snyder willed her way
back into the saddle and back to the arena.
Amberley was voted in as the fan exemption and it showed on
Sunday when she was preparing to make her run. The crowd roared
as she and her horse turned each barrel. They gave her a standing ovation when she passed across the timeline running a mere 2
tenths off reigning World Champion Fallon Taylor and Baby Flo.
“I am so honored to have been chosen to run in The American.
For the fans to feel I was deserving and could have a shot, means
the world to me. To be in the same arena as these world champions
and legends as an absolute dream come true,” explained Snyder.
During the contestant meeting prior to the rodeo, Snyder noticed
herself staring around the room at all people who occupied it.
“Sitting in the contestant meeting, I was trying not to stare at the
entire group of people that I was surrounded by. On the outside I
played it cool but on the inside I was filled with butterflies! I want
to thank everyone who made this experience possible. I truly am
blessed to have had so much love and support.”
During the rodeo, Snyder was able to stand by Charmayne James
and shared some special moments with her.
“Grasshopper (Charymayne’s horse) was one of the only horses
that Power would stand by. I didn’t complain about that one bit! I
Barrel Racing Report
was completely enthralled with her. We just chatted about horses
and running. I loved hearing her talk about Scamper too. She definitely became one of my idols just in those few minutes talking to
her.”
After Snyder made her run, she was called back out into the arena
to accept something she had no prior knowledge about, a check
for the newly formed FFA Amberely Snyder Courage Fund. It
was established with $100,000 given by RFD-TV and presented by
founder, Patrick Gottsch, to help FFA members overcome challenges of their own.
“I had no idea about the scholarship. The man at the gate just
didn’t let me out and I was taken aback as to why I couldn’t leave.
Turns out it was for a great reason! I truly hope my name can be a
beacon of hope for those facing challenges in their lives. Thank you
to RFDTV for their generosity not only to me but also towards my
FFA friends,” Snyder said.
And if that wasn’t amazing enough, reigning World Champion
Fallon Taylor extended a helping hand to Amberley Snyder by setting up and kicking off a fundraiser online to buy Snyder a Tank
Chair. The public response was amazing and in 24 hours $30,000
was raised to buy a Tank Chair that would allow Snyder to stand as
she student teaches and even clean her own stalls!
“Fallon Taylor is an exceptional human being. She lights up my
life with her presence every time I see her. She is so caring and supporting, you feel like you could accomplish anything being around
her. To have her promote my story and get the help for me to get
the Tankchair is seriously life changing for me.”
Synder would like to thank all who make this dream a reality; her
family and friends, sponsors and Busby Quarter Horses for taking
complete care of her, her horse and her family.
The barrel racing at RFD-TV’s The American this year was
nothing short of amazing. Girls got to live their dream by running

Cervi & Atlas Peak Rise To The Occasion in San Antonio
By Tanya Randall
The San Antonio Rodeo turned into a three-horse race for the
championship amongst four-time WPRA World Champion Sherry
Cervi, 2014 Rookie Champ and current standings leader Sarah McDonald and red-hot Alexa Lake. All three ladies went over $20,000
in earnings for the tournament-style event, but the title went home
to Marana, Ariz., with Cervi and her borrowed mount Atlas Peak,
owned by Trip duPerier.
It was the second San Antonio title for Cervi, who admitted with
a laugh, “I won it back in ’03 and I hadn’t made the short round
since!”
Cervi’s great mare MP Meter My Hay (“Stingray”) can just about
walk on water, but even she has arenas that aren’t to her liking. San
Antonio is one of them.
“I had won a little money,” she explained, “but Stingray did not
like that pen. Every year I thought this year would be different and
it wasn’t. So I decided to change it up and ride Atlas. “I honestly
thought going in that it couldn’t get any worse because the last five
years I haven’t left with any money, so I might give something else a
change and was pleasantly surprised. He was very awesome.”
“I’ve had him since October. That’s when Trip bought him. I
took him to the NFR as a backup for Stingray. He’s a really cool
horse. That was the first rodeo I had run him at. I had ridden him
at three or four jackpots in the time that I’ve had him.”
Bred by MJ Farms, Veguita, N.M., Atlas is a 13-year-old gelding by all-time leading barrel horse sire Dash Ta Fame out of the
Streakin Dash mare Dashin Sandy. Claimed off the track by April
(Hickey) Yeager in California, the gelding got his start on the barrels with Lyndee Stairs before being campaigned by Jamie (Cook)
Pearson as a futurity horse. When Yeager relocated to Oklahoma,
Atlas found his way into Add Waddell’s barn and earned a 2009
AQHA Reserve World Senior Barrel Racing World Championship

2006 WPRA World Champion Mary Burger before being sold to
Savannah Friedkin. Atlas also picked up pro rodeo checks for Tiffani Sonnier under Friedkin’s ownership.
“A lot of people have been a part of this horse’s life and they got
him where he needed to be,” acknowledged Cervi. “He was good
when I stepped on him. I’m very thankful to Trip for the opportuSan Antonio Pro Rodeo Continued on Page 22

nity. It’s fun when you’ve been riding colts to step on a horse like
Stingray, or Atlas, and all you have to do is let them do their thing.”
With San Antonio using the tournament-style format, contestants
competed in brackets of 10 with the top four money earners from
each bracket advancing to a two-run semifinals. The five with the
most money from each semifinal advanced to the final round. The
championship was determined by overall money won.
In her three-run bracket, Cervi turned in consistent sub-14
second runs and won two of the three rounds and was second in
the other. In the semifinals, she won the opening round and placed
fourth—her worse finish of the rodeo—in the second. She finished
second in the finals, with her fastest time of the rodeo, to win
$21,942 and the championship over McDonald and her gritty mare
Fame Fling N Bling, by a mere $338.
“I had never run him in on that small of a pattern,” she said. “I’d
run him building, but not THAT small. He’s just super solid and
wants to please. Having not run him that much I didn’t know if he
would get short or not, but he stayed really free. Atlas’s style is very
round and he keeps moving. It’s fun. I was like ‘I want to keep going!’”
Following the short in San Antonio, Cervi hopped a plane to
Arizona where Stingray was waiting for the short round at Tucson. They finished third in the average for $3,950. Overall, the two
rodeos jumped Cervi to No. 6 in the World Standings with $25,892.
Next up for Cervi is Rodeo Houston—a rodeo that Stingray
LOVES. They are out in the third set. From Houston, it’s on to
Rodeo Austin then home to Arizona.
“I’m going to stick to my same schedule,” she said. “I love rodeoing in the summer, so I’m going to my same rodeos. For now, I’m
just going to ride my young horses and try to get them seasoned.”
She also wants to be home for the arrival of Stingray’s Dash Ta
Fame foal. The recipient mare is due at the end of March. Barrel Racing Report

Kates Always First & Kirkpatrick Get A Comeback Win San Angelo
By Tanya Randall
Veteran trainer, clinician and host of Racer’s Edge, Dena Kirkpatrick and Kates Always First triumphed at the San Angelo Stock
Show & Rodeo, held throughout the month of February. The
victory netted Kirkpatrick, who hails from Post, Texas, $10,461 and
a bye into the richest regular season rodeo in the United States—
Rodeo Houston.
“I was really proud of her at San Angelo,” Kirkpatrick said of the
10-year-old mare. “It was her second building rodeo and she did really well. And, it wasn’t limited! Plus you have to run in a big indoor
and then you have go into the coliseum with all those people and
run two times for a three run average. I’m feeling very excited.”
Kirkpatrick and Kate squeaked into the short round in 12th position after two runs. She and husband Cliff were in Arizona for a
few rodeos when it looked as if she should head back to Texas.
“I was sitting really good (at San Angelo), then they moved
me four times in one performance and then they didn’t move me
much,” she explained. “There was one more performance left, and
I had to start driving if I was going to make it back because of the
weather and I was 1,200 miles away. I was eighth and there were
seven girls that had placed in the first round that could have moved
me (in the last performance). It was 9:30 at night and I was at Fort
Stockton watching it sleet, thinking I was crazy for doing this, and I
got a hold of the secretary and she said I made it.”
Kate shined in the short go, winning it by 2/10ths and winning
the average by nearly 2/10ths.
Next up is the fourth set at Rodeo Houston.
“I’m scared to death,” laughed Kirkpatrick, who competed in
the Astrodome that last time she went to Houston. “I have no idea
what that’s like. That might be a little bit above both of our heads!
But, we’re going to go give it a shot with no expectations!”

Kate seemed nearly improbable five years ago. In fact, the mare
nearly lost her life due to a disastrous cut to her left leg front leg
right above the fetlock.
“It was devastating,” said Kirkpatrick. “We still don’t know how
she did it. We looked all over and couldn’t find what she would have
done it on. We suspect she bucked and played and did it to herself,
but we’re not sure.”
Kate was rushed to Dr. Bo Brock’s in Lamesa, Texas.
“He wouldn’t tell me that she’d be okay,” Kirkpatrick recalled.
“He eventually said at best, she’d be a broodmare. I said, I just
didn’t care; save her. I told him I didn’t want to bring her home until
there was no chance of infection. We just did everything we could
along the way.”
After regional perfusions of antibiotics, stem cell therapy and
a year of additional rehab, Kate was sound enough and strong
enough to be bred as a 7-year-old. Kirkpatrick bred her racehorse
sires Coronas Leaving You and Chilled Corona. The Coronas Leaving You colt was sold at the Ruidoso Yearling Sale last year and
is currently in race training at El Paso. Kirkpatrick still owns the
Chilled Corona filly, which will be leaving shortly for training.
Miraculously, after the filly was born, Kate seemed sound enough
to ride.
“This was three years after the injury,” Kirkpatrick said. “I took
her over (to the vet clinic) periodically and we’d sonogram it. He
said she was sound enough to start riding her, so I started legging
her up with a colt on her side. I just lightly started legging her up,
nothing crazy.”
At 9, after flushing another embryo by WPRA World Champion
Sire PC Frenchmans Hayday, Kirkpatrick decided to see what Kate
would do at a rodeo since she had been sound and healthy for a
year.
Kate had been doing well at the jackpots, so Kirkpatrick snuck
off to one of the amateur rodeos she likes to season colts at, and
Kate handled it better than expected.
“I never dreamed that she would do so well in these big, outdoor
pens,” said Kirkpatrick. “I took her to some more amateur rodeos.
About the fourth one I took her to she won by half-a-second in this
massive outdoor pen with the fences basically nowhere in sight.”
She then decided to crack Kate out at a pro rodeo and chose her
hometown rodeo of Lovington, N.M. Kate placed and followed it
with a win at the pro rodeo in Altus, Okla. After the winter break,

they started off with a terrible experience at Fort Worth.
“I can’t let her go until she gets to the mouth of the alley,” she
explained, “and I just didn’t use my head and let her go from the
alley. She just ran and it was awful. I was really discouraged. When I
went to San Angelo, I used my head and didn’t let her go too soon
and stayed out of her way the rest of the time, and she did so well.
I was so proud of her. That was her first building rodeo after Fort
Worth.”
It’s been a long time since Kirkpatrick has rodeoed a lot, with
more than 20 years passing since she last won San Angelo or
competed at Houston. She was riding the great Magnolia Bar mare
Color Me Magnolia at the time.
“I feel like a duck out of water,” she laughed. “If it weren’t for
Sherry (Cervi) helping me with trading and all that stuff you’ve got
to do now, I would have been shooting in the dark.”
A leading futurity trainer in the late 1990s with a passel of NFR
qualifiers to her training resume, Kirkpatrick shifted focus in recent
years. She no longer trains for the public, and thanks to the success
of her training DVD, she’s stayed busy on the clinic circuit.
“It’s been different,” she said of switching gears from fulltime futurity horse trainer. “With the clinics, I haven’t had time to get one
ready like I used to. I have different values now too, that I’m older,
I guess. I’ve been enjoying watching them mature, and since I own
them, I don’t have to push them until I’m ready. If one comes up
that it’s easy and wants to be ready I’d go, but I don’t mind waiting
on one if it’s going to come on slower. I don’t think a horse has to
win $200,000 as a 4-year-old to be worth something. I still love the
futurities, but I love training horses more than anything.”
Kates success at the pro rodeo level as been rather surprising, but
don’t look for Kirkpatrick to haul for the NFR anytime soon.
“This rodeo thing can be over at any time,” she said. “I’m not
making any big plans to go anywhere. I’m just taking it one thing at
a time.”
Barrel Racing Report
More than anything, she’s just happy to have Kate sound and
running again—“Thanks to God and Bo Brock!”

Price, Riemer split $1 million at RFD-TV’s American
ARLINGTON, Texas; March 1, 2015 – A young relatively
unknown pair of cowboys – a bareback bronc rider and tie-down
roper – bested the world’s top-ranked athletes on March 1 to split
more than $1 million at RFD-TV’s The American, presented by
Polaris Ranger.
“Words can’t express what this can do for my life,” said 24year-old Reese Riemer of Stinnett, Texas, who tied his calf in 7.25
seconds to edge three-time world champion Tuf Cooper. “When
I threw my hands up and looked at the clock – I’ll remember that
moment the rest of my life.”
In just its sophomore year, RFD-TV’s The American attracted a
crowd of 42,563 into AT&T Stadium despite a winter snowstorm,
and again offered the most money the sport has ever paid out in
one day. In addition to $125,000 cash up in each event, the payoff
included a $1 million bonus pool awarded to any “underdog” who
could out-ride or rope the top 10 rodeo athletes in the world, or
awarded equally to all event champions if unclaimed.
Earlier in the evening, Taylor Price of Huntsville, Texas, had
scored 89 points on Frontier Rodeo’s bronc Show Stomper to defeat a bareback riding field that included defending world champion
Austin Foss.
“I’m still just blown away,” Price said. “This is the coolest rodeo
I’ve ever been to! I was too broke so my parents had to pay my
entry fees to the Semi-Finals. This takes away a lot of the financial
troubles I’ve had.”
Price and Riemer had each paid a $500 entry fee to qualify via
the American Semi-Finals. Veteran steer wrestler KC Jones, 44, of
Decatur, Texas, also qualified through the Semi-Finals, where he
told reporters he would “bulldog a grizzly in a parking lot” for the
chance to earn a million dollars. A week later, Jones recorded a time
of 4.19 seconds in the finals of RFD-TV’s The American, which
tied with Nick Guy of Wisconsin for first place. Ground rules dictate that no ties are eligible for the bonus pool. Still, Jones’ paycheck
of $100,000 in one day nearly equaled his total earnings through all
of last year – $101,058.
“I would be excited about this even if all I got was this buckle,”
Jones said during a post-event press conference, holding up the

to and another $5,000 at the Semi-Finals. That Semi-Finals is a great
rodeo – it pays $25,000 to win. And then you get to come here and
hang out with all the big rodeo stars!”
Kaleb Driggers of Albany, Ga., was one of four champions who
became repeat winners from 2014, including all-around champion
Trevor Brazile, saddle bronc rider Wade Sundell and barrel racer
Lisa Lockhart. Driggers, who also this week pocketed $42,500 as
the high seller at an innovative new sponsor patch auction, won the
rodeo last year with Patrick Smith and did it again this time with
Travis Graves.
Price and Riemer each earned $600,000 while every event
champion also took home nearly $50,000 in prizes that included

new Polaris Rangers. The rodeo also paid out $500,000 through its
semi-finals and a week earlier and raised nearly another half-million
dollars via RFD-TV’s The American Sponsor Patch Auction.
“This event speaks for itself,” said Brazile. “Every year they add
something better and I can’t wait to see what’s around the corner
next. For Reese to have won $600,000 in one day, that just provides
endless opportunities.”

ac Hammond has a large ministry in Minnesota which has
seen many, many miracles, acts of God and answers to
prayer. He teaches often on our authority, given to us by
Jesus, to speak to our health as clearly outlined in the Bible.
Hammond recently distributed some prayers he encourages
believers to say often with true faith. This is just part of them:
BRAIN, function as the mind of Christ. There will be no confusion, no lack of understanding or memory loss. The memory of the
just is blessed.
HEART, beat normally with no arrhythmia, no irregularity, no
clots, no heart attacks, no stoppages. LUNGS, you are clear and uncongested and my entire cardiovascular system functions perfectly
just as God created it.
STOMACH, you’re going to function normally without ulcers or
indigestion. I have no digestion problems and my intestinal track
functions normally with no polyps, no diverticulitis, or any other
infirmity.
JOINTS, I command you to function well with no pain, rheumatism, arthritis or bursitis. I command full range of movement

in my knees, hips elbows and every part of my body. My muscles,
cartilage, ligaments and tendons function as designed. They are
strong, doing exactly what they are capable of doing, all to the glory
of God.
God created this natural world with the words of His mouth.
Since we are made in His image and likeness and granted His
dominion, we have the right and authority to speak the command
of faith which can change circumstances. Believe your words have
power when spoken in faith. Remember and act on what Don Gossett (author, evangelist and teacher) said, “What you say is what you
get!”
