Sidewalk dining may come to Keokuk
Main Street
groups seek
approval from city
CINDY IUTZI
dgceditor@dailygate.com
KEOKUK — Al fresco dining on the sidewalk could
be an option in downtown
Keokuk if the city council
green lights an ordinance and
artist’s renderings submitted recently by Main Street
Keokuk, Inc.
“Please give this every
consideration,” said Joyce
Glasscock, executive director
of MSKI. “We believe it will
enhance our city. We’re very
passionate about this.”
Glasscock already has
reviewed the materials,
including accessible sidewalk
guidelines with Community
Development Director Pam
Broomhall, City Attorney
Audrey Alexander, Fire Chief
Gabe Rose and others involved in city planning.
Two Keokuk restaurateurs,
Doug Matlick, owner of Dr.
Getwell’s and the Hawkeye,
and John Mason, owner of
Angelini’s, are poised to put
their outdoor dining plans
in action as soon as the city
gives the nod.
Matlick has sheltered patio
dining at the Hawkeye and
believes this design would do
well at the 11th Street side of
Dr. Getwell’s.
“I want to offer the option
to be outside during good
weather,” Matlick said this
morning. “It’s a cultural
thing, another option.”
He believes Keokuk would
respond well to such dining
options, as have other cities.
“The first time I saw it was
in Iowa City,” Matlick said.
“They had a carnival a few
blocks away and the sidewalks downtown were full of
people walking – some with
ice cream cones – and shopping. The places with outdoor
seating were all busy.”
Matlick’s plan is to have
a removable outdoor dining
area with umbrella-shaded ta-
bles seating 20. If the concept
catches on, something more
permanent with a pergola and
fence would be the next step.
He would install two light
poles that match the ornamental lighting on Main
Street, maintain them and
pay the electric bills.
“It’s dark in that area, anyway,” he said.
The proposed ordinance
makes it clear that loud
noise, bright lights and smoking would not be allowed.
The outdoor dining area
would observe the five-foot
setback already required on
sidewalks and be delineated
by a three-foot fence or other
“rigid structure such as a cable, plants/planters or ropes
of a design or type” approved
by the city, according to the
ordinance.
Outdoor dining elements
would have to be removed
within 30 minutes of the
sidewalk café’s closing, or be
secured to prevent problems
to people or property.
“It all can be taken down
off-season,” Glasscock said.
Operation of the outside
dining areas would be from 7
a.m. to midnight.
Sidewalk cafés would be
subject to permits issued by
the city.
Glasscock asked council
members to review the ordinance and make a decision
well before the outdoor dining season begins.
Looking into the future of travel
Future cars may be driverless and powered by hydrogen. Toyota already has a hydrogen fuel-cell model ready
for the market, with other
auto makers scrambling to
catch up. I don’t know why
it is the foreign manufacturers that seem to grasp
what American consumers
want or will be driving. The
Japanese were the first with
high-mileage, low-emission
cars, and first with hybrids
and electrics.
The only emission from
these hydrogen-powered
autos is water. Nice. The
main problem, so far, is
that there’s a shortage of
hydrogen-fuel stations.
Right now the closest
hydrogen-fuel stations for
Iowans are Chicago and St.
Louis. I expect we’ll soon
see them in Des Moines,
Cedar Rapids and the
Quad Cities. Like anything
else new, it takes time, and
(this is the most important) a change in attitude.
The driverless cars are being worked on by all the major auto makers. They have
to, because the driverless
cars have to communicate
with each other. These driverless cars are equipped with
a lot of surrounding cameras
and radar.
EMPTY NEST What I
haven’t seen
addressed is
what happens when
the camera
lenses become dirty
or covered
with ice, as
is wont to
happen in
Curt Swarm
the Midwest.
The rear-view camera on my
car now is next to worthless
when it is covered with dirt,
which is most of the time in
winter, considering Iowa’s
slushy roads. Hopefully, the
automakers have taken this
into consideration, since
they test these autos in all
sorts of severe conditions.
I wonder if texting will be
allowed in driverless cars.
How about reading, working
crossword puzzles, or writing
the Great American Novel?
It would sure make the drive
across Nebraska a lot easier
if one could nap or surf the
Net while driving.
In the near future, we may
even see humans on Mars.
A select group of people are
being groomed now for such
a trip. A one-way trip! Gulp.
Not for me. I like the comforts of home.
Life expectancy of a baby
born today may be 146, according to Time magazine.
If obesity can be whipped,
people will live longer, be
more productive and, hopefully, happier. It mostly has
to do with drugs. Scientists
are experimenting now on
mice with a drug called
rapamycin, “which seems
to slow aging and the damage it can do.” Rapamycin is
already used as an anti-rejection medication for organ
transplant recipients, so the
arduous FDA approval process has already been met, at
least for organ transplants.
If it can work on mice, it may
work on people. By the way,
the antibiotic, rapamycin,
was first discovered in dirt.
We’ll see how “the best laid
plans of mice and men” work
out.
There’s also resveratrol, a
compound found in grapes
and red wine, that’s espoused
to have antiaging attributes.
It’s gotten a lot of press, and
is quite popular, because it
gives folks the excuse to have
a glass (or more) of red wine
per day.
Then there’s an enzyme
called telomerase, which
works on telomeres, the
timekeepers of a cell’s life.
With the use of telomerase,
telomeres “might be manipulated and extended to halt
aging related problems.”
With people living longer, where will they all
live? You’d think the old
codgers would flock to the
sunbelt. Nope. Also accord-

they darn well better not be

Marilyn Knowlden’s Decade in Hollywood
She did 50
productions
before age 18
NICK THOMAS
getnickt@getnickt.com
Her career as a child actress only lasted from 19311944, but Marilyn Knowlden
has carried the memories for
a lifetime.
“My parents enrolled me
in a dance school when I was
3 and the teacher told them
that one day I would be in the
movies,” recalled Knowlden
from her home in Orange
County, Calif.
In 1931, when her attorney
father took the family on a
business trip from Oakland
to Hollywood, he clearly gave
some credence to the teacher’s prediction.
“For fun, he phoned up Paramount Studios and got an
interview for me that day,”
said Knowlden. “I was only
4 and the casting director
told us it was a pity I wasn’t
older because they needed
an 8-year-old that week for a
film, but that I was too young
to remember the lines.”
Her father, however, disagreed.
“He told them I had a good
memory and the next day I
had a screen test,” she said.
The result was a part
with 500 words of dialogue
in “Women Love Once,”
the first of six films during
1931, although she would be
Child actor Marilyn Knowlden, right, starred with Katharine Hepburn in “A Woman Rebels” in which Knowlden had to use a bow and arrow.
uncredited in “Wicked” and
have her scene later cut from
“Susan Lenox” which starred
Gable and Garbo.
“Greta Garbo played my
governess, but she also gave
me some professional advice:
‘In Hollywood, don’t count on
anything!’” recalled Knowlden.
As a child actor, young
Marilyn’s movie characters
were frequently paired with
screen mothers who were
leading actresses of the day
including Norma Shearer,
Claudette Colbert, and Katha-
rine Hepburn.
“A special relationship can
develop with the actress who
plays a child’s mother even if
that bond is temporary,” she
said. “Norma Shearer was a
dear screen mother. When
we would come back from
lunch, she would have a little
porcelain box on the set with
a surprise in it for me.”
Hepburn was another favorite. In “A Woman Rebels,”
Marilyn had to use a bow and
arrow.
“She said she would give
me a dollar if I could hit the
bullseye,” said Knowlden. “I
never did get my dollar. But
I did get a nice autograph:
‘Dear Marilyn, hoping your
archery will improve, affectionately, Katharine Hepburn.’ I still have that.”
A Hollywood veteran of
50 productions by age 18,
Knowlden gave up acting for
a simple reason: love.
“I met a returning serviceman, got married, and went
to China with him where I
worked for the armed forces
radio service,” she said.
But Knowlden’s acting
career wasn’t quite over.
“When I was 69, I began working in regional theater. I’m
88 now and have been in 19
plays since, and also written
scripts, lyrics and music.”
In 2011, she published her
autobiography, “Little Girl in
Big Pictures” (see www.marilynknowlden.com), detailing
her life including on-screen
Hollywood experiences.
But there were also special
memories that occurred off
camera such as meeting the
Marx Brothers.
“I never worked with
them, but did meet them
when I was working on my
first film,” she said. “The director took me over to the set
where the four brothers were
making ‘Monkey Business.’
Chico sat me down at the
piano and taught me to play
a few notes. We even played a
duet together.”
Four years later, in the
role of young Cosette in “Les
Misérables,” Knowlden says
fellow cast member Charles
Laughton visited her set.
“He was wearing his
hip length boots and I was
wearing wooden shoes, and
I taught him a little wooden
shoe dance,” said Knowlden. “So I played piano with
Chico Marx and danced with
Charles Laughton – you can
see why I loved my short Hollywood experience!”

Hours: Mon-Thur 11am-9pm; Fri & Sat 11am-10pm
Located on the riverfront in downtown Burlington,
Iowa, is The Drake restaurant. The Drake offers
fine wine, family entertainment and a casual, oneof-a-kind dining experience, with a 200-seat
dining room and a 100-seat patio with views of
the Mississippi River from nearly every seat.
The Drake sits in the heart of what was once the
‘River District’ in downtown Burlington. The
building The Drake is located in was built in 1906
as Drake Hardware. Over the years Drake
Hardware acquired buildings to the north and
south of where the restaurant currently sits. These
buildings have been used for hotel, auto repair,
manufacturing of buttons, drugs, boxes and a
variety of other things. Drake Hardware ceased
doing business in 1980 and the building stood
vacant until it was purchased by its current
owners in 1983.
The Drake is known for its excellent food. It’s
Riverfront Starters offers a nice combination of

The wine, beer, and mixed drinks offerings is

and The River Room. Each room is different to
meet your needs, whether you need space for 10
people or 200 people.
And warmer months, don’t forget about The Patio
at The Drake for a truly spectacular experience.
Whether you want to reserve it for a get together,
or just dine their during regular hours, The Patio
has amazing views of the Mississippi River and a
