Forum Cites Prescription for Progress
Without dismissing any of the pragmatic realities that bedevil northeastern manufacturing communities, all five speakers
at this year’s Economic Forum made compelling cases for the region’s potential to capture a new wave of sustained
prosperity. The 22nd Annual breakfast forum was held February 12th and once again enjoyed a sell-out audience of nearly
300 members.
Moderated by Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli, the program featured a diversified panel of leaders from
Manufacturing, Finance, Development and Entertainment. Sponsored by Elmira Savings Bank, the forum is hosted by
Southern Tier Economic Growth and the Chamber.
Speakers included Arne Feyling of Kennedy Valve / McWane, Ron Bentley of Chemung Canal Trust Co., Jack Benjamin
of Three Rivers Development Corporation and Michael Printup of Watkins Glen International.
Insightful presentations by the panelists were followed by questions from the moderator and from random attendees.
An especially engaging dynamic of the program was the interaction among the panelists themselves.
While the overall message was optimistic, the commentary included practical caveats about barriers which could inhibit
progress. Unselfish public-private cooperation is essential, particularly in small markets where efficiencies are crucial to
containing costs and taxes. Likewise, speakers emphasized the need for New York State to foster business growth not only
through current incentive efforts but also -and perhaps more importantly- by reducing the prolific mandates, restrictions
and regulations.
Recognized as a highlight of February each year, forum organizers are already welcoming suggested speakers for the 2016
edition.

Area Tourism Offices Partner to Attract Writers
The Chemung County Chamber is working with tourism offices in Steuben and Schuyler counties
to plan for what is hoped to be an ambitious season of press visits from select journalists. The media
tours will be available from late spring through fall and be offered in response to an ever-growing
interest in the Finger Lakes as a travel destination.
According to Cynthia Raj, the Chemung Chamber’s Manager of Tourism Promotion, working as a
tri-county region has enabled the southern Finger Lakes to attract top-tier writers in recent years
which otherwise may have been out of reach for the individual counties. “We’re increasingly
competing with destinations across the globe to capture the most influential writers. Together we’re
able to offer up an itinerary that’s enticing enough to keep us in the race, while also maximizing our
marketing dollars.” Raj added that this season’s focus will continue to center around hands-on
experiences that showcase the region’s outdoor adventures, culture and rich history.

In addition to hosting a week-long group media tour in June, Chemung, Steuben and Schuyler counties will also work
together to coordinate customized visits for individual writers.
Turtle Leaf Café Relocates to Downtown Elmira
When Adam Bunce bought Turtle Leaf Café last month, he wanted to keep the popular eatery’s
commitment to providing healthy food served up in a green environment, but yet find it a new
home which would offer increased foot traffic.
Bunce’s search eventually led him to relocate his restaurant from Horseheads to downtown
Elmira, where it would be within easy walking distance of Chemung Canal, Elmira Savings
Bank and numerous other businesses. He noted that the choice appears to have been a good
one, as the upturn in business during the first month has already prompted him to add five
additional employees to his team to keep up with the demand.

Turtle Leaf Café uses all natural ingredients and secures organic and locally-grown produce when possible. Although it
offers breakfast, lunch and dinner fare, it is particularly known for its creative sandwiches & wraps, salads and smoothies.

Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Local Bartender Finds Place in National Spotlight
If you’ve had the pleasure of dining at Charlie’s Café in Elmira, it’s likely that you were greeted
by Michael Skinkle-Hill, the restaurant’s manager, who is well-known for his pain-staking
dedication to detail to ensure guests have the best possible experience.
But Skinkle-Hill can also be found behind the bar at Charlie’s, and it was his innovation as a
mixologist that earned him national recognition last month when he was featured in
WineandSpirits.com, a California based blog site dedicated to all things related to libations
from across the country. “I love creating new cocktails to introduce to our customers,
particularly around holidays and special events,” he stated. Skinkle-Hill added that he’s
already preparing special drinks to serve up at Charlie’s during March to honor St. Patrick’s
Day.

Elmira Chemung Transportation Council Releases Freight Study, Asks for Member Input
The Elmira Chemung Transportation Council (ECTC) is seeking comment from Chamber members on its freight study
as parts of its “Elmira Chemung Transportation Plan 2035: Challenges and Opportunities”. ECTC is responsible for
investing federal funds in the region’s transportation system, including roads and bridges, C TRAN service, and sidewalks
and trails. It decided to prepare a separate study just for freight. Highlights of that study are:

Local Celebrities Join the #PicYourFrames Fun for Vision Center
A new year, a new look for two local media celebrities, Ally Payne of WINK 106 and
Renata Stiehl of WENY-TV, as they let social media fans help choose their new eyeglass
frames in the #PicYourFrames Vision Center social media campaign.
Beginning in February, fans were able to help Ally and Renata pick their new designer
eyeglass frames from The Vision Center by voting for their favorite styles on their
respective Facebook pages. Both media personalities are modeling a different pair of
their favorite frames daily, Monday through Friday, through March 6th when voting
ends.

Elmira College Offers Professional Development Courses
The Office of Continuing Education and Graduate Studies at Elmira College is offering several non-credit professional
certificate programs beginning in March designed to assist working professionals in strengthening job skills and meeting
continuing education requirements.
There are two certificate programs and one professional credentialing exam preparation course scheduled to begin in the
Spring — Disaster Management Certificate, Cyber Security Certificate, and Certified Professional in Supply Management
(CPSM) exam prep course.
The Disaster Management Certificate is designed to provide attendees with the knowledge and skills to be successful in
their designated disaster planning, response, recovery, or mitigation roles. The program also covers the components of
crisis communications and social media in disaster management. The program concludes with a comprehensive tabletop
exercise. An information session is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2015 from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Gannett-Tripp
Library, Elmira College. Classes for the Certificate will meet on Tuesdays, March 24 through June 2, 2015 from 6:00 - 9:00
p.m. at Elmira College. The classes will be blended with some offered in the classroom and some material covered online.
The Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) credential from the Institute for Supply Management is
designed to lead the profession by emphasizing the major components of supply management. The CPSM exam prep
course at Elmira College will provide an overview of the material covered on the exams with resource articles, case studies
and supplemental content developed by subject-matter experts. Sessions are scheduled to start on Saturday, April 11 from
9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the Elmira College campus.
Cyber security is an area that is currently in the news with major breaches occurring often. The Cyber Security Certificate
course is designed to provide attendees with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully design and develop, as well as
implement, their IT disaster recovery plan (DRP). This plan is an important part of the overall business continuity strategy.
The course also covers recovery time and recovery point objectives (RTO and RPO) and incorporates cyber security
strategies for businesses and organizations. The course concludes with a practical simulation exercise. Course classes will
meet on Tuesdays, April 14 through May 19, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the Mirabito Energy Products Corporate Office, 49
Court Street, Binghamton, NY.
Online registration for all programs is available via the Office of Continuing Education website at www.elmira.edu/ce.

Antique Revival to Host Appraisal Event
Antique Revival invites the public to their annual “Antiques Roadshow”-themed Charity Appraisal event on March 8,
2015 at Antique Revival, 26 Palmer Road N, Big Flats NY 14814 from 1-4 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $5 per
item and there is a limit of 2 items per person. All donations go directly to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
The Charity Appraisal event is a wonderful opportunity for individuals to bring in items of personal interest to be
evaluated and discussed by a certified appraiser with decades in the business while helping out one of the area’s most
impactful charities. Many people never have the opportunity to have their items appraised due to the high cost and
scarcity of appraisers in the area.
This event is a high point of Antique Revival’s year. The public and staff alike enjoy seeing the variety of items, it is a great
resource for collectors at all levels, and they are pleased to be able to partner with the community to donate resources to
this great cause. Refreshments will be provided.

Society of Manufacturing Engineers Creates Scholarship at CCC
Rodney Grover believes that the next Henry Ford, Steve Jobs, or Thomas Edison is sitting in an American high school
right now. He also believes that to make a difference one needs three things: proper knowledge, skills, and passion.
Grover is featured on the Society of Manufacturing Engineers website. A manager at a manufacturing plant, his views on
the importance of education are similar to those expressed by members of the Society’s Elmira chapter: access to a proper
education is critical to ensuring the future of the manufacturing profession, a profession with roots as deep as America’s
history. To help ensure this access, members of the local chapter, with support from Kennedy Valve and the Elmira
Star-Gazette, have established the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Elmira NY Chapter 24 Scholarship at Corning
Community College (CCC).
“This is a triple win,” said Dave Beauseigneur, who is a manufacturing engineer at Hardinge and serves as the chairman for
the Society’s local chapter. “Manufacturing is a well-paying and diverse field. Qualified applicants will earn a good living
and have options for employment. The scholarship will help the College recruit talented applicants who might not
otherwise be able to pursue an education. The community wins because manufacturing is one of the foundations upon
which this community is built. People come here, and stay, because of the opportunities.”
Beauseigneur also hopes that the scholarship recipients will stay local: “Although the scholarship does not require a
commitment to work locally after graduation, knowing that the scholarship is supported by local employers should help
graduates realize that there are options for them in our community. They don’t have to leave to have a good life. Our
community offers tremendous employment opportunities in the manufacturing sector and a quality of life that is
unmatched. This is really about building the pipeline.”
The Society of Manufacturing Engineers Elmira NY Chapter 24 Scholarship will provide one scholarship each year to a
CCC student from Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben,
Tompkins, Bradford, or Tioga counties (in New York and
Pennsylvania), who is enrolled full-time, and who has
demonstrated financial need. In addition, the recipient
must be enrolled in one of the following programs:
Manufacturing Technology, Machine Tool Technology,
Mechanical Technology (CAD Design), Electrical
Technology-Electronics, Chemical Technology, or

Melanie Owens is a Business Development Officer for Corning Credit Union (CCU). She has
been with CCU since January of 2010. Melanie has been an Ambassador with the Member

and The Painted Post Board of Trade.
As Ambassadors of the Member Services Council, volunteers obtain an excellent working
knowledge of the Chamber, its service, programs and activities. They network with community

Concert to End Hunger Sponsorships Available
Historic Twain Plaque Retrieved
A Concert to End Hunger will be held to benefit the Food Bank of the
Southern Tier on Friday, May 29th at the Clemens Center in downtown
Elmira. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7:00
p.m.
Dolphin Entertainment Company Inc., an event planning service in
Corning, is coordinating the event. The concert will be an intimate
acoustic performance by award-winning, Billboard charted country
performers Bryan White, Wade Hayes, Jamie O’Neal and up-and-comer
Andrea Pearson. The stories behind the music will give the audience a
unique look into the lives of the artists as they perform their chart-topping
songs.

Winter Leadership Chemung Sessions Focus on Team Building, Key to Successful Business
The 2014-2015 Leadership Chemung program recently passed the halfway point in its curriculum.
The class kicked off 2015 with a January 8th session with Jeffrey Furst of eCision on Team Building, including learning
about how effectiveness supports strategy execution. The January 22nd session focused on the Key to Successful Business.
Travis Barnes of Journey Fitness Coaching talked about understanding your role and the five levels of leadership, followed
by Steve Burns of Cameron Manufacturing, who discussed real-world challenges, workforce development options and the
importance of keeping a positive leadership attitude.
The February 5th session focused on Conflict, Collaboration and Leading Change, headed up by Matthew Sharpe of
Cameron Manufacturing, and the February 19th session explored some topics of Education with Maggie Thurber of Finn
Academy and Kurt Bartenstein of Empower Federal Credit Union.
March sessions will focus on Multigenerational Interaction with Linda MacAuslan of Arnot Health, and Making Your
Case with Christina Bruner Sonsire of Ziff Law Firm. April will highlight technology and its effects on leadership, and
class members will also present their community volunteer projects.
Leadership Chemung Commencement is scheduled for Thursday, May 7, 2015, at the Elmira Country Club. For more
